Which Manchester City defender will replace the injured Aymeric Laporte?

Wednesday morning brought the widely anticipated news that Aymeric Laporte (£6.5m) faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The Manchester City centre-half was stretchered off with a knee injury in the first half of Saturday’s win over Brighton and Hove Albion and has since undergone surgery, with the reigning league champions reporting that Laporte had damaged his “cartilage and lateral meniscus”.

No timeframe was put on his return by the club but widespread media reports suggest the French stopper will not return until 2020.

Who will replace Laporte at the back, then?

On paper, the Citizens only have two remaining orthodox centre-halves on the books: John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi (both £5.4m).

However, Fernandinho (£5.3m) featured in defence for a handful of games last season and has been training as a centre-half for the past few weeks.

With Stones sidelined with a thigh injury, the Brazilian was the man brought on alongside Otamendi on Saturday when Laporte was carried from the field of play.

Fernandinho said after full-time:

I’ve been training in this position the last couple of weeks. We still have two centre-backs but I can play in this position.

John was injured, Laporte comes off and I was the only one on the bench. It’s not a secret for me. The key is just to understand the concept of the way we have to play. The movements and the pace we use in games. It was my first time and I hope I can improve and do better next time.

Head coach Pep Guardiola said of the prospects of the Brazilian at centre-back:

He needs some processes, defensively especially. He is intelligent with a lot of experience and we will work with him. Unfortunately, we cannot right now because of the international break but we are going to work on it. We need him in this position.

Meanwhile, Guardiola said that he would have no hesitation in playing Kyle Walker (£6.0m) out of position.

Walker has featured in a back three for his club and country but never as a centre-half in a back four.

Guardiola said on Saturday:

It is what it is. It’s happened and the other guys will make a step forward. If one day I need to put Kyle Walker as a central defender, he is going to play there.

Laporte was the mainstay of the City defence last season, starting all but one Premier League match that he was fully fit for – a muscle injury affecting his capacity to play in Gameweeks 28 to 30.

In this article, we will look at the games in which Laporte didn’t feature at centre-half, including the handful of matches he started at left-back.

Walker didn’t feature at centre-half in a ‘two’ once for City last season, so we will not cover him in the below analysis.

We will pay particular attention to who deputised as the left-sided centre-half, as it is this position that Laporte has occupied since his arrival in Manchester.

The results of each fixture are also included, with City’s score always first.

Final Thoughts

Otamendi seems to be the clear understudy for Laporte, then.

In the 17 competitive matches that the Frenchman didn’t start in his usual position, Otamendi deputised as the left-sided centre-back in 13 of them.

Vincent Kompany stood in for Laporte on three occasions but of course has now left the club, while youngster Eric Garcia was the only other defender on the books who filled in as a left-sided centre-back (in the dead rubber of an EFL Cup semi-final, second leg against Burton Albion) in 2018/19.

Not since 2016/17 has Stones started a City league match as the left-sided centre-half, while on the two occasions that Fernandinho played in defence last season, he played as a right-sided centre-back.

Fitness-permitting, Stones and Otamendi will likely be the default pairing, with Fernandinho (and Walker, if necessary) chipping in with the occasional run-out.

Otamendi’s capacity to play on the left side of the central defence would seem to make him the more attractive, more secure option from a Fantasy perspective, although Guardiola would surely have to consider someone else in that position for the odd game or two given that City are also competing in the Champions League and Carabao Cup.

Fine article but what it needs is how laporte absence effected their CS potential. What were the scores in the games above?

Fixtures suggest clean sheets but loss of Laporte could throw spanner in the works and rotation not good either for City defence which probably going to happen now.

Good point - had considered the possibility of that as a separate piece. Will add the scores to it now.

With City I've always thought their main defensive weapon is simply hogging possession. And then regaining the ball high up the pitch with that aggressive press. Personnel at CB obviously still relevant (BHA had chances on Sat) but perhaps not paramount.

      (Cue succession of CS losses)

    Hi all

Currently on a WC and had a couple of q's if you don't mind.

Who would you prioritize getting out of KDB and Aguero? And who to choose out of the 4.5 defenders.. Mings, Soyuncu, Lowton?

KDB at this point the player I am after. Must have in my humble opinion.

I have Kun, Salah and Sterling. Not letting Kun and Salah go so Sterling to be chopped and KDB plus another in form midfielder to replace Sterling.

If things do not work out with Kun then I can just go back to Sterling.

Not sure why people are saying City wont keep clean sheets with Laporte out? Otanendi and Stones are quality CBs, combined they cost upwards of £80 million, and would be the first choice centre back pairing at Arsenal, Chelsea and Every club below them except United (Maguire).

City will likely keep a good number of CS even with Laporte out

      Sort of agree

But their record last season with Laporte was a bit uneven. The cs haul came in the long run in when they clearly seemed to tighten up. They went on quite a long run when they conceded consistently- 7 on the trot?

Still they are as good a bet as any right now. Don’t think the personnel is that key - it’s more about to what extent teams try to shut up shop imo

Rudiger is a better centre half than both of them in my opinion and I’m not sure either are better than Vertonghen, certainly they wouldn’t be n obvious first choice at Tottenham

Stones & Ota are both error-prone. City's overall squad will cope with the loss as their focus is attack and can outscore their opponents.

I don't think clean sheets are nailed by any stretch. I think they will get clean sheets in some of their games but also concede quite a few more without Laporte. The loss of Kompany and now Laporte is a big deal for them.

Oh for sure, I agree the loss of Laporte is big, but they'll still pick up more clean sheets than the vast majority of other teams, and if a route in is available at just 5.4, it makes sense to go for it.

Not much flexibility with this team currently due to the number of premiums on board but any thoughts on its sustainability for now ? Still hoping Greenwood becomes a starter at some point but reckon it's wishful thinking.

Current plan is Jota to Barnes this week/next then Henderson to Pope GW6.

            Henderson (4.0)
            Trent, Montoya, Zinch, Lundstram
            Sterling, Salah, KDB, Dendoncker
            Auba, Jota
            (Cantwell, Greenwood, Soyuncu)

B first imo. But very tight.

United defensive stats are still pretty good. TAA is a gem mind so A is also a good call

            Best Laporte replacement

            A) Otamendi

            B) Attacking differential: Emerson / Maitland-Niles

            C) VVD (have TAA)

            Rest of def:
            TAA / Digne / Laporte** / Lund / kelly

Chelsea shipping goals. Arsenal is like a lucky packet.

Nothing to do with kneejerk. Fixtures are not great , other options available (Barnes.abraham, Haller ) .

Ah if you’re thinking Haller instead and want to cash 0.2 I think it makes some sense.

More dubious about Abraham what with CL about to kick in. Chelsea are still wait and see for me. Over cautious perhaps.

I’m not seeing obvious better value at that price point right now. He’s 6.7 if you got on him early.

That could get you Barnes I guess but he too is likely over performing right now. I’d still put more money on Norwich goals than Burnley and Pukki has a sensational GI. Burnley historically average just over a goal a game and Barnes won’t get them all!

I have never owned him, however if he blanks again his price will drop rapidly due to the impatient kneejerkers.

A few good cheaper options at striker at the moment - Pukki or not, you can still have three good ones. Having him could mean keeping up with the crowd, or having a lower owned option could be a potential differential...

Not on WC but I would keep Pukki. Got him at 6.6 so I still think he is great value. It depends how much you spent on him and if you could get a better candidate who is slightly more expensive by cashing in (Abrahams, Haller).

I think Norwich appear more impressive attacking wise than Burnley. I can see the knee jerkers jettisoning him quickly if he blanks though.

A fully rested Salah against a team who recently shipped three at Norwich is where I'm looking.

Players that can please the eye but have underlying weaknesses:
Mount leaves spaces open. Presses well 50% of the time. resulted in a goal but also the other way round.
Maddison movement fantastic. Finds space but I wonder sometimes his choice of pass. Needs to score and assist more often. I think Vardy as good as he is, does not suit Maddi.

Ceballos gets 10 the first game and 1 the second game.
not the quickest and PL teams could find him out dwelling on the ball.

100% yes. KDB looking in great form with returns. Ceballos has great potential. Looked lively as a sub vs Spurs so expect him to start away to Watford. Arsenal has a good run of fixtures so hoping he cements his place with returns.

Want to replace Laporte and AWB - what moves should I do?

              A) Laporte --> Van Dijk - AWB --> Otamendi
              B) Laporte --> TAA - AWB --> Defender for max. 5.1, but who? Pieters, Sokratis, Soyuncu ?

              Appreciate any advice!

Tough one. TAA seems like he's in a league of his own, but I can see how two nailed CB's on probably the two best defenses in the league is appealing.

I think A is the best long term solution.

Yeah think A is better long term. It's just.. TAA is so good! Such a high ceiling for points. But Van D & Ota could rake in the points as well. Both a threat from set-pieces

Stats says Haller too, but Haller played Norwich which skews the data a bit. But lets not forget he played City too. Haller should get more chances to score but Martial is quality so I wouldn't be surprised if he scores with the few chances he gets.
I think its a close call but Haller wins it out for me, me specifically because I think there are better 6m Midfielders than strikers. I will have a 7.5 and 6 combination. I would rather have Haller and 6m Midfielder than Martial and 6m forward.

I have the cash for Haller but Martial as a mid playing a forward role is tempting. ManU, are they that bad? Not so sure. Hype on every game they play creates bandwagons.

              On wc 0.5 itb
Looking for some advice here lads
              Currently landed on this XI
              Pope
              Digne, TAA, VVD, Zinch
              Mane, Mount, Kdb
              Barnes, Aguero, Pukki
              Bench, button, cant, guend, lund

Was on vardy but switched to barnes to enable rico to digne

Apart from guendozi im anti arsenal, utd and spurs(apart from keeping an eye on son+kane) this season , caused havoc for me last season so ditching completely this season
Mount would be out but he is in form, not bad fixtures barring lpool and not much of a selection atm in mids imo

Lastly keep double pool or ditch vvd for someone else?

Thoughts on vvd potentially increasing in price prior to next gw? I do have cash itb to cover it but dont wanna caught, those 0.1's can be mega at times

One more thing, kdb? Currently thinking good short term as i dont expect him to haul in goals as such, anyone catch your eye who is cheaper wiv similar assist potential? Tielemans maybe?

As a manchester united fan - Haller. His stats are better and he is in the baps.

Here are some stats for you:

                xG + xA per 90
                - Haller = 1.01
                - Martial = 0.44

                Shots per 90
                - Haller = 3
                - Martial = 2.67

Rash to Barnes or Vardy, more vardy than barnes primarily due to hauling ability and he has a good record against top6 .
As a utd fan, they are absolute Sh!te atm, buildup play is pathetic, no sense of direction, constantly messing passes, cant cross or float a decent corner in , no one has the balls to run wiv the ball just pass around mindlessly, and the striker is embarrassingly missing 95%of the game and defo not a focal point of the team , they play like a relegation team hoping for a lucky counter that works ...

Last piece of the puzzle for my WC team (barring any injuries):

              A) Pieters
              B) Lowton

Lowton. Cheaper and more nailed I'd say. C.Taylor was 1st choice LB last season and was unfit at start of season.

A bit far in advance but who would you prefer to captain between these two options in GW 7? Will help in form my next few moves.

              A) Salah (shu)
              B) Son (SOT)

Has anyone out together analysis on aguero impact on sterling?

Looks like sterling is not as effective and no longer the main man with aguero

It seems to suit him more when Jesus plays. More recently anyway

you are right. The build up is coming from the right this season (kdb). There will be lot of goals from aguero assisted by kdb. also on penalties. The better option this season is aguero m afraid

Both can go missing whilst the other scores at times , personally i believe they cancel each other out long term wiv similar returna overall, luck dictates who hauls and when , both are dangerous but as i say can go missing regardless of who is on the pitch

I do think there is something in the De Bruyne, Aguero partnership, I talked about it in pre season, which gets the best out of the latter, but there were occasions last season when Sterling outpointed Aguero when both on the pitch at the same time - Southampton springs to mind.

Actually, someone have and it turns out Sterling is better with Aguero while Aguero is more or less unaffected by Sterlings presence.

Sterlings G/A per 90' with Aguero is 0.97 and without him 0.57

Nope. Zinch stays till someone actually starts ahead of him, which hasn't happened in a while.
Just an easy direct switch to Otamendi later if someone actually starts ahead of him.
