Which Manchester City defender will replace the injured Aymeric Laporte?

Wednesday morning brought the widely anticipated news that Aymeric Laporte (£6.5m) faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The Manchester City centre-half was stretchered off with a knee injury in the first half of Saturday’s win over Brighton and Hove Albion and has since undergone surgery, with the reigning league champions reporting that Laporte had damaged his “cartilage and lateral meniscus”.

No timeframe was put on his return by the club but widespread media reports suggest the French stopper will not return until 2020.

Who will replace Laporte at the back, then?

On paper, the Citizens only have two remaining orthodox centre-halves on the books: John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi (both £5.4m).

However, Fernandinho (£5.3m) featured in defence for a handful of games last season and has been training as a centre-half for the past few weeks.

With Stones sidelined with a thigh injury, the Brazilian was the man brought on alongside Otamendi on Saturday when Laporte was carried from the field of play.

Fernandinho said after full-time:

I’ve been training in this position the last couple of weeks. We still have two centre-backs but I can play in this position.

John was injured, Laporte comes off and I was the only one on the bench. It’s not a secret for me. The key is just to understand the concept of the way we have to play. The movements and the pace we use in games. It was my first time and I hope I can improve and do better next time.

Head coach Pep Guardiola said of the prospects of the Brazilian at centre-back:

He needs some processes, defensively especially. He is intelligent with a lot of experience and we will work with him. Unfortunately, we cannot right now because of the international break but we are going to work on it. We need him in this position.

Meanwhile, Guardiola said that he would have no hesitation in playing Kyle Walker (£6.0m) out of position.

Walker has featured in a back three for his club and country but never as a centre-half in a back four.

Guardiola said on Saturday:

It is what it is. It’s happened and the other guys will make a step forward. If one day I need to put Kyle Walker as a central defender, he is going to play there.

Laporte was the mainstay of the City defence last season, starting all but one Premier League match that he was fully fit for – a muscle injury affecting his capacity to play in Gameweeks 28 to 30.

In this article, we will look at the games in which Laporte didn’t feature at centre-half, including the handful of matches he started at left-back.

Walker didn’t feature at centre-half in a ‘two’ once for City last season, so we will not cover him in the below analysis.

We will pay particular attention to who deputised as the left-sided centre-half, as it is this position that Laporte has occupied since his arrival in Manchester.

The results of each fixture are also included, with City’s score always first.

Final Thoughts

Otamendi seems to be the clear understudy for Laporte, then.

In the 17 competitive matches that the Frenchman didn’t start in his usual position, Otamendi deputised as the left-sided centre-back in 13 of them.

Vincent Kompany stood in for Laporte on three occasions but of course has now left the club, while youngster Eric Garcia was the only other defender on the books who filled in as a left-sided centre-back (in the dead rubber of an EFL Cup semi-final, second leg against Burton Albion) in 2018/19.

Not since 2016/17 has Stones started a City league match as the left-sided centre-half, while on the two occasions that Fernandinho played in defence last season, he played as a right-sided centre-back.

Fitness-permitting, Stones and Otamendi will likely be the default pairing, with Fernandinho (and Walker, if necessary) chipping in with the occasional run-out.

Otamendi’s capacity to play on the left side of the central defence would seem to make him the more attractive, more secure option from a Fantasy perspective, although Guardiola would surely have to consider someone else in that position for the odd game or two given that City are also competing in the Champions League and Carabao Cup.

yeah just can't look at Lundstram and Mount rising in price every week as I really want them in my team..will lose some more value here waiting (already on -0.6 on those two)

Why not cut your losses and find the next good move? If you get them now you’re “losing “0.6.

Mount is interesting but he was in effect rotated out of position last match and didn’t make the Super Cup final. With CL coming up there’s no saying how much and where he’s going to be playing. Non essential imo.

Thinking ahead what appears the better move?
    A. Drop Heaton to Button (have Pope) to fund Barnes (-4). Relatively weak bench (Rico/Den/Lund).
    B. Upgrade Vvd to TAA and have the cash for Rico to Soyuncu/4.5 def and Den to Cantwell over next few weeks (stronger bench).
    C. Keep Vvd over TAA. Dendoncker to 6.2mid (Trossard).

By the time you see returns, the fixtures and points will have gone. He has shown enough imo. In fact, not scoring against Spurs is a blessing in disguise. He had the most goal attempts of any player last gameweek. If he had scored, he'd have hauled 13 points and then would no longer be a differential for arguably the best two fixtures possible (wat and AVL)

Good points and think it's great to get on players before they become bandwagons. What is drawing me to Son before Pepe is needing a captaincy option in GW7 where it is Son (SOT) vs Pepe (mnu)

Why do you need a captain option? Just go with Salah or Sterling as normal. Salah has shu and Sterling eve. Both are perfectly acceptable. Salah vs shu is strong.

KDB makes it very difficult to get him. Add Vardy and Firmino into the mix who are proven points getters, it becomes more complicated. He also seems a little rushed in his decision making and needs to settle down.

Which is the best option to accompany VVD an TAA long term? I have Pope in goal, Lund and Dunk as my 4th and 5th defender. Also avoiding anymore double ups. So only players posted below.

After Boly suspension he is the one I would go with but owning any Wolves not best option right now IMO. Do I keep Boly or go with which of the following?

    A. Maitland-Niles
    B. Mina
    C. PVA
    D. Ota
    E. Zinc
    F. Musaka

Sceptic about owning City defence at the moment as Pep roultte could get the better of you. The fact that Fernandinho has been training as a CB for the last couple of weeks could = Pep Roullette. That and saying he would have no problem using Walker at CB again, who knows what he has hiding up his sleeve.

    Thoughts?

I suspect Fernandinho has been training as a centre back as he's probably third choice now behind Stones and Otamendi, and will get minutes as CL and League Cup fixtures kick in. Walker, can't see him playing centre back unless its forced, he's never played in a two man backline as far as I can remember. I'd go D.

Thanks. Will hold on to Boly as his price is safe and see how City's defence lines up GW5 then pull the trigger 🙂

Very different game it's a sprint, have always used the chips early. Fixture to fixture is the best way to look at it. I.e. No point in having Salah away at Napoli when you can have Coman at home to red star.

      Looks solid.

Otamendi, Pepe nice differential picks. Also think Wilson will do well.

Personally not keen on a Burnley defensive double up, one is enough, but it could do well. I'd also like to see more City attacking coverage. If you can't stretch to KDB, maybe David Silva? Haller over Abraham too, IMO.

I was similar to yours with KDB instead of Pepe, but Aguero and Mount instead of Sterling and Wilson has given me the money to get better players from the same defenses.

    4. pingissimus
      • 5 Years

      Like it a lot.

Think Abrahams over Mount is a good call. Really like Martial and Wilson too.

But Pepe over KdB is the punt. Quite a big one. Given City fixtures I’d be tempted to lose Hendo to get him in for the next two anyway - roulette may make that poor of course.

Yeah Pepe is the big gamble Pingi but I was hoping KDB's points would be covered by Sterling. The problem is that it means playing 4 defenders and 2 strikers whereas I prefer 3-5-2.

Depends really on what you do with saved cash if going for Haller.

I have Haller from the start and altough difficult initial weeks I am really happy with him, on the ohter hand Leicester is aiming for top 6 and I do rate Rodgers as manager so Vardy might be very good pick too.

      Tough

Haller just. But Vardy really really tempted me. Think Leicester will be consistently up there this season and he’ll be right in the goals. Amazing value right now.

Think the front line I’m aiming for is Haller Wilson Vardy - might take a couple of weeks to get there.

Some just do not realise how difficult it is to get Salah if you do not have him. If you can offord him, pull the trigger.

Others also do not realise that if you had Salah and sold him then wanting to get him back means tearing up your squad 🙂

Wesley not ripping up the pitch right now and by the looks of things he will not anytime soon. I would stay clear.
