Meet the Manager #16 – Tarek Balbaa

The Meet the Manager series, where Joe interviews a Fantasy manager with a more than enviable track record, is back for 2019/20.

This campaign’s series of interviews starts with a chat with Tarek Balbaa, who explains why being based in Egypt has helped ensure he puts the eye test to good use in his Fantasy decisions.

Over his illustrious career, Tarek has eight top 10,000 finishes, including two in the top 1,000.

With all Premier League matches broadcast in Egypt, he is able to watch four to five televised games a week.

This has ensured he was quick to acquire Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne this season and is still reticent to invest heavily in Manchester United.

Underlying statistics are still important to Tarek but he likes to go back to basics with such research, preferring shots in the box statistics than the phenomena of expected statistics.

Tarek also talks about his poor seasons and the lessons he’s learned from mistakes made. Chief of these for him has been to focus heavily on what mini-league rivals are up to.

The chat with Tarek is available to view on Youtube here and in the embedded video below.

It is also available on Soundcloud and as a podcast. Embedded versions of these are also available below.

All 15 previous episodes can be viewed via our Youtube channel or heard via our Soundcloud channel.

If Trossard is out for week 5 and perhaps longer best option

A Bench, play Cantwell and carry transfer or use free on Trossard to
    B Ceballos
    C Iwobi
    D McGinn

    Pope
    TAA Van Dijk Diop Digne
    Salah Sterling KDB Trossard *
    Haller Pukki

    McGovern Cantwell Greenwood Rico

If Trossard is not out for long I'd definitely keep him mate.
He looks great fpl asset to me. Brighton fixtures are nice too imo.
If out for long though, McGinn for me.
      Iwobi looks trap

Here are some selected odds to be the Premier League top goalscorer this season for all players with at least 3 goals in their tally so far, but who do you fancy to come out on top in the race for the Golden Boot?

    7/2: Sergio Agüero - 6 goals
    25/1: Teemu Pukki - 5
    6/1: Raheem Sterling - 5
    25/1: Tammy Abraham - 4
    66/1: Ashley Barnes - 4
    8/1: PE Aubameyang - 3
    40/1: Sébastien Haller - 3
    100/1: Daniel James - 3
    9/2: Harry Kane - 3
    11/2: Mohamed Salah - 3
    20/1: Jamie Vardy - 3

Can Sergio Aguero continue his excellent run or will a returning Gabriel Jesus eat into his minutes too much? Can Teemu Pukki party his way to this top accolade or will the goals dry up for the Norwich talisman? Is there anyone not on this list who you feel will have their say by the time that May rolls around?

Who is your tip for this years Premier League Golden Boot and why?

        Me too.

I’ve just listed those with 3 goals and above which is why Mané’s not in there.

You’d have to think Salah is a good bet - penalties, nailed to bejayzus and playing in an attack pretty much as good as city’s

      Rotation/injury to bite Kun
      Carthorseness/injury/spursness to bite Kane
Salah to sail off into the sunset with the golden boot?

Yeah, chances of Salah missing games is very unlikely unless he is injured *touch would he wont get any*.

Beast of a player. I cannot picture my team without Mo.

Jesus may be the player to get a run in the CL and Cups. All will become clear after GW5 with Kun.

If I had a free bet on it, I would probably go for Auba as his odds seem quite attractive. He won (jointly I know) last year and with Pepe and Ceballos, Arsenal will potentially be more potent in attack. No CL to worry about so should get lots of PL minutes, but never know for sure with Emery.

        Yeah I agree with this.

Salah's and Aguero's odds correctly shorter, and I think them more likely to claim it, but if I were betting on it, then I'd take Auba's odds.

If he stays fit all season, definitely Kane. He might not always look 100%, but he's a goal scorer and they all count. Can see him matching his 29 goals he managed the 2 seasons before last.

Don’t think he will get anywhere near unless it’s a low winning total (closer to 20 than 30)

No penalties is a big problem when Kane, Aubameyang, Salah and Aguero all have them. Leaves him needing an extra 5 or so goals from open play

Vardy is the top scorer since Rodgers took over. By far the best value bet out of those imo.

Kane. Usually after the first international break Spurs improve. He's scored three in what is usually his worst month of the season. December to January are his most prolific months and the fixtures in those months are fairly good.

Kane, Vardy and Salah will battle it out until the end, with Sterling, Mané and Aubameyang a bit behind. My reasoning:

          • Aguero will be injured/rotated
          • For obvious reasons, Barnes and Pukki will not challenge for 25+ goals
          • James - lol
          • Abraham - Chelsea
          • Haller- never been the main goalscorer for a team in a top league, wary of his ability to put through that many goals
          • City will share goals too much for Sterling to win it
          • Aubameyang isn't bad on the wrong but his goalscoring is not as prolific as through the middle, not expecting a crazy output from him
          • Mané scored 18 non penalty goals last year, seeing as the Golden boot numbers will probably go back up to a more usual 25+ this year, can't see Mané improving last year's output enough.

•Kane, Vardy, and Salah all have penalties, they're all nailed and all their team's major source of goals
          • Vardy is top scorer in the league since Rodgers joined
          • Salah is Salah
          • Once Spurs get their shite together, Kane will be a scoring beast again in all likelihood

        Have Mount & 1 FT.
No other fires to stop (at least atm)
Not very keen on his chances in near future. Only thing I'm happy after bringing him IN in gw4 WC team is 0.1 rise he's given 😀

Do we think swap to James is a good use of FT or go boring/sensible way & save FT ??

              Hey 🙂

It's tough when you bring in someone who's been doing well and they blank, but mount looks very dangerous to me. And I'm a bit sceptical of James. He has a flash of brilliance then looks out of his depth the rest of the game.

kind of same here, but i feel we need more time to see. Who`s going to be the Mahrez and vardy types this year? We don´t know and therefore i would hesitate to ship any at this stage. Mount could hike (pun intended) into the sky and then you will have to buy for more. Wolves away, considering the other games no one really stands out imo. Chelsea attacks and he plays, Liverpool surely a hard one but if you have a decent squad one could argue benching if you will. Or just play him,

Ahhhh firmino or a second pool defender over salah on WC makes the team so much better overall help. With Sterling, TAA and Auba as alternative captain options would it be worth it to have Salah?

You're looking to sacrifice the top points scoring player in the game...some things are guaranteed and one of them is Salah being at the top of the leader board at the end of the season, plus an extremely reliable captain each week also

I wouldn’t captain salah all that much in the games coming up and it prevents a bum player having to play every week with a decent one in their place

Realistically speaking Salah is fixture proof in my opinion, he is playing for one of the most attacking high scoring teams there is in the league, starts every game, rarely injured, there's nothing to not want me keeping him in my team for the season.

Id rather drop one of the other premiums than Salah for team balance. Salah is the most nailed for minutes amongst the premiums so the safest captain option. Only Kane is as nailed as Salah but he wont score as many points as Salah.

Sterling is likely to get benched one of the games you want to captain him. Played only 75% of the games against non top 6 opposition last season.

Pep doesn’t have sane to fill in for him anymore. Squad depth is at an all time low for him. There isn’t a natural LW in that squad other than sterling, your point is valid but I need to see what he does this season. He is someone definitely worth the risk with those fixtures

Uhm let's see, if you have Sterling, and want Salah at this point, how many players are involved getting Salah pending money in the bank if you ship Sterling? If you want to keep Sterling and bring in Salah it is end game.

When the WC in the IB is done, price rises will resume. Sterling will even be difficult to get.

That is why Salah for me is set and forget.

I dropped Salah on my wildcard. Got TAA and Firmino now and I’m happy.

Can’t see the point in spending 12.5m if I’m not going to be captaining him until the end of November.....

I’ll captain sterling GW5/6/7/8/9/10/11, then captain Som GW12 and then I’ll be ready to look at bringing Salah back in for GW13 onwards.

Depends on who you upgrade from i guess. Firmino and Auba looks nice by all means, but if it´s for good value players i´m not that sure. Two strikers at 9.5+ does not seem like a good idea, with a flurry of good 7.5 and below strikers.

Which player do you think is a trap this season?

Last year I fell head first into a bunch of them: Mitrovic and Knockaert being two of the worst. And luckily managed to avoid the Walcott one although that was one of the biggest traps from last year. Who are this year's traps?

On my list: Perez (fell into this one already), Lanzini, Abraham.

Lanzini has never had a season where he's scored more than 133 points. This doesn't seem like a season where that will change and for an AM he doesn't take enough shots. Relying on assists in a WHam team that has a lot of creators means I think he'll get overshadowed a lot despite decent underlying stats.

Abraham I think will be a bandwagon fail. He has strong competition and Chelsea have a lot of fixtures to navigate. I doubt he'll nail down the spot and suddenly become Didier Drogba. Can see Giroud or even Batshuayi getting game time and all it takes is a few bad games for him to plummet to obscurity.

Started with Perez and fell into a, hopefully temporary, Kane trap as well. Can't believe Barkley has already been a trap again Pogba will turn out to be one if he ever has a couple of good games and people jump on.

I don't think Tammy will be as much of a trap as you're predicting. He is our first choice striker now, but of course not at the Drogba levels.

I'm personally not jumping on him as he's still only scored against "Championship" sides (despite thinking he's on a mini-run right now), but also UCL as you say. You'd think Giroud etc may start the UCL games, but it's no guarantee; Tammy starting some games there could become a problem.

Having said that, if you have him now wouldn't drop of course.

Agree on Abraham and Perez. True, Lanzini doesn’t shoot enough, but has been playing really well since early pre season and is stationed behind Haller ( not on the wing as in the past)

I hope you're wrong on Pepe since I brought him in this week. But if he fails I don't think it's even fair to call him a trap since nobody has flocked to him yet. Pure differentials don't count as traps if they fail. Like Mark's punt last year on Ryan Sessegnon. I don't think anyone would label that as a trap. It's just a failed differential.

Rashford I think is fairly priced but streaky. He can be worth it if you get him when MUN are playing well.

Kane is interesting. I think he could be worth it but depends on the rest of the team getting it together and Spurs on the whole look all out of sorts this season.

                              Agreed on Pepe.
Rashford will score a brace in a random game & then blank forever 😀 don't rate him as fpl option tbh.
Re Kane, it's been 2/3 years and same story.
Trap in a sense that we fall into © him against Cardiff/Newcastle .. easy fixtures at Home & he flops big time. So ....

Front 7 is Salah, Sterling, KdB, Pepe, Cantwell, Pukki, Wesley.

Note, this would see him finish with around 17 goals if he plays every game. Can't remember a promoted teams striker scoring over 20 since Andy Johnson in 04/05.

I wouldn't say he's a trap, as he's already proven to be a steady source of points. Can't wait to see people transfer Pukki out so I can feel smug again when he scores one match after another.

Agreed I’d argue Man Utd players in general are traps but appreciate that’s a sweeping statement. Barkley I feel is also a trap and is one every year

I forgot about Barkley. But I almost don't count it as a trap. Two games in and it was clear he was just a bad pick. Traps are different from bad picks.

Traps are players that perform really well for a bit, look as if they would be great picks, everyone buys them, ownership explodes, price goes up and they proceed to do jack.

Potential traps: Mount, Pukki, James, Barnes, Rashford, Cantwell (less so because he's so cheap)

I transferred Pukki in for gw2. He has scored a lot of points and his price has risen .5 million. Besides points he has given me, he will increase my sv with at least .2 million. If he is defined as a trap, I want more traps 🙂

Perez has been one of the biggest traps (was easy to ditch though), but Zouma has been more annoying as the whole Chelsea defense.

Coleman has high xG, but failed to score. Does that make him trap compared to lucky Digne?

I have Kun but I feel like he could be a very subtle trap, in that he does well enough that you're always fearful of selling him, but overall you end up with less points than if you had a cheaper striker and KDB instead of Kun, Salah, Sterling.

As a hammers fan I've got high hopes for lanzini this year. He was practical missing the entire last year due to injury, his first year was his first year and we had payet pulling the strings, second year payet's strop, bilic out and Moyes didn't help the team at all. Now he finds himself in a team of more attacking mids, a forward who likes to link play and assist others, a manger who encourages open attacking football, on free kicks and corners. He's 27 ish and just signed a bumper contract extension and been reintroduced to the Argentine squad. He's recapturing the form that made him a poor man's coutinho. If this ain't his breakthrough year, then it'll never happen.

id push the boat out and say Haller. See too much of Giroud in him so far in the games I've watched, standing outside the box and being the link up man. Only will get chances/goals if the ball goes wide and the full backs can get crosses in, and against decent sides they wont have the chance to push up.

Agree, I'm not sold on Haller. His 3 goals have been all 6 yard tap ins against weak defences. He'll provide assists and goals, but I'd rather have Wilson than him.

I'm all about those 6 yard tap ins. Tough to miss from there. Fancy goals count the same number of points and are scored less often. Don't over think it.

Giroud’s scoring rate would justify a 7.5 outlay

Giroud always played in a better team. I'm not saying he'll blank endlessly, I just he isn't the best of the bunch for medium priced strikers

This assessment comes after you watched the City game I presume ... decent side I gotta say ...
Call him a trap after he stops hauling, next 5 gws should be proof enough, good luck!

The City game isn't fair assessment at all I agree. I watched both his games' against Watford and Norwich (the 2 worst defences in the league) and he just wasn't involved enough in the box for me.
Against Watford, he only looked decent when Antonio came on (who is now out for a few months) as West Ham finally started to be more direct and get crosses in, which fitted his playstyle.
Against Norwich, his goal was very fortunate as it only came about due to Zimmerman's injury (Masuaku was able to ghost past him like he wasn't there), and he barely has a sniff for the rest of the game. Anderson/Yarmalenko/Lanzini were just as dangerous, or even posed a greater threat.
However, he could turn out to be a bargain, who knows, that's the fun part of playing FPL!

You know what I think, to be frank ...Haller’s positioning was great, bar the City game which is pointless to talk about, and for a player to adapt so quickly to the PL is seldom seen.
That being said, I would rather put the emphasis on the last pass leading to a goal which is generally something missing in Anderson’s repertoire, stoping him from becoming a great player and FPL asset... so for me Haller is a great player, fit for WHam ...only if others around him feed him well enough he will keep scoring. If you watched the last game you know what I’m talking about 🙂

As Haller owner not happy with Antonio injury. Yet fit Lanzini should help him. Arnie and Whu attack has done historically well for me against bottom10-12 teams. He is no season keeper, but more than worth the money with favourable fixtures.

The guy in the Racing Post tipped Firmino to win the Golden Boot last season. He cited a few reasons including his European form but of course it never near happened. I'm definitely not saying he's going to scoop it this season but he's started well and I can see him comfortably beating his previous best tally (15).

Got into the Wally trap, yeh

Lanzini won´t be a trap imo. But he is more like a steady point source, 5-6-7, than hauls imo. His injury record is not good, so taking it into consideration he could be after all

Perez, i think he wil have some purple patches so could be one to hang onto in those periods. But wait til late april perhaps?

Abraham wil be more clearer after CL, if that is Giroud, then he is PL starter, in a team that scores as heavily. No trap, but wait and see for that rotation i guess

I am not sure any cheap striker can be viewed as a trap? If they don’t score points you move them on. The only way they can become a trap is if you buy them after their purple patch of 4 or 5 goals, such as Pukki, Tammy, James etc and they never score again for a long time but you still hold them blindly.

I can’t really see that for the players mentioned above, but you never know.

I think the biggest trap are cheap OOP defenders that play in midfield or OOP mids that are playing up front - we buy and start them just because they are OOP, even though they are rubbish

                                Mitro certainly

Walcott last season was the definition of a trap. And he too was easy enough to switch out to the likes of Fraser. They count. If they take a spot in your starting XI they count.

i thought the definition of a trap was a player that lulls you in because of a few goals or OOP or os on corners etc ... Walcott was only a trap for this of us with FPL deficiency syndrome 😉

Agree on Abraham. Both of his goals against Sheff Utd, for example, were completely down to woeful defensive mistakes. Without those, he might be considered 'struggling'.

Perez agree (and I fell for it). Lanzini is a bit unfair in that there's not a huge bandwagon just yet but I concur that there's too much creative firepower in the West Ham midfield (COYI !) to have it all come from him. Anderson is looking really good as well and we will see more of Pablo Fornals as he adjusts to the PL.

I think Wolves as a team are a trap - at least until they exit Europa League. They look great midweek and I think they'll do well there but then they are knackered by the weekend and looking just like Burnley and Everton and the other recent mid-table Europa League qualifiers who suffered poor Premier League seasons as a result. Sadly I fell for that trap too and wish I had more free transfers to get rid of Jota!

Nah, I see him being as properly priced this year. He always appealed in the past because he was 4-4.5million cheaper than Kane. With only 1.5m between them, rightly or wrongly, I will opt for Kane as my Spurs attacker (if I have one).

Abraham to pukki then updgrade defence. Double chels attack is mental imo. Soyuncu fixtures aren’t good

I think I will play Pieters every week, perhaps rotate him with Kelly or Lundstram for some fixtures. Tbh Pope is in my list too since he gave me loads of point in 2017/18. I still have 0.7 ITB tho. Any suggestions?

Just means a beautifully balanced squad man. My salah team is okay but not as happy and lacks flexibility which i value highly:

I like it, and not far off where I'd go if I decide to swap Salah out - pepe and Firmino seem like the obvious beneficiaries

Yeah fair James is the pick of the bracket and best performer in a goalscoring united attack. I’m happy to be on that bandwagon but I expect there to be many changes in that spot over the season, James looks best until Trossard is back

Leno/Tark to a 4.5 or lower if needed. By the time I want salah Soyuncu and Lundstram have amazing fixtures so I wouldn’t need a 5th defender for 5m. Then sterling > Salah GW13. Also looking at Firmino > Vardy GW9 so could save that 0.5 saved to do Sterling > Salah later on.

You cannot base this on price rises and price falls. You do not know what will happen and if you have no money in the bank trying to get Salah in should he go demon over the next couple of game weeks then you may find your salf in a pickle.

Salah isn’t the only source of FPL points in the world. If he goes mental I have shown you I have an easy way to get him in if I have to but I think sterling does better until I actually want him. Firmino can be downgraded and Pepe/KDB can be upgraded if necessary too if I have got this wrong immediately. I don’t think so tho

Ugh Leno.Go Pope and upgrade Tark.

But hard to argue against much of that if you intend to permacap Sterling.

I like your forwards a lot. But still, no Salah really does hurt.

Yeah those two spots are funny ones. Punty but could be explosive. Arsenal have pony fixtures for ages now must keep a few CSs and there are a few Burnley games I want to avoid so having Tark adds attacking threat and a rotation plan to get better fixtures.

Thank you. Yeah I know he has the capacity to explode, but I think that about the player I can afford instead as a result too

It is fair to say, if you had Salah from the start you should keep him till the end. He is the most expensive player.

Unless you want to get rid you should have Sterling and Kun.

If you only have Sterling and want to bring in Salah, who do you get rid of? You may need a WC and if you have used your WC without Salah in it, you will be taking mega hits to get Salah back if you only have Sterling 🙂

Salah is performing though. He has ever since he arrived at LFC.

With so many forwards sub 7.8, so many mids sub 6.5 and city defenders available at 5.5 with pope, Lundstram and cantwell available at bargain bin prices balance with Salah(alongside sterling and kdb) is a lot easier this season as compared to previous seasons

what about GW1 lol, we pretending that didnt exist? Salah got 12 points and Mane did feature that week for a 1 pointer so Salah actually 11 points ahead...

People get bored easily.. Paying so much for a premium player that isn't exciting to own due to everyone owning him bores ppl in time. Luckily I don't get bored and always feel that Getting rid of him is a trap. All it takes is a brace for everyone to be jumping right back in. Would rather spend my transfers swapping out the sub 6.5 players who go in and out of form/fixtures more predictably lol

this, its just not worth the headache. Especially wildcarding him out which makes it difficult to get him back. He is not going to be blanking, everyone will want him again soon enough. He is the spine of the template

I did an early WC. Took out Salah and convinced myself (and relayed on here) that Mane covers him. I had a “balanced team”. Salah then scored a brace and got an assist in the next game and I plummeted down the ranks as a result. Don’t be a fool like me. Chose Salah lol
