Eight gameweek’s later and here we are, the final of the Fantasy Football Scout Cup III, sponsored by Paddy Power. From over 1300 entrants just two remain, with “tippman” and “gooner dave” hoping to follow the likes of donnellyc and Jonty into our Hall of Fame.

Let’s take a look at the fantasy squads at the disposal of both our finalists going into the weekend…

tippman – Overall Rank: 4,759th, Squad Value: £102.6M

As is stands, tippman has nine of his squad playing away from home this weekend, and one major injury doubt in Rafael Van der Vaart. It looks likely therefore that selection and transfer decisions will be pivotal to his success this week.

gooner dave – Overall Rank: 2,516th, Squad Value: £104.9M

As for gooner dave, he has just six playing away from home, as well as Rafael Van der Vaart. But when you consider three of those six face West Brom, it perhaps isn’t too big a worry.

The main sources of talking points are when you compare both teams. Looking at the goalkeeping situation, it’s probably gooner dave that has a slight advantage. Both managers have Ben Foster playing at home, but gooner dave has the strong(er?) option of Paul Robinson playing at home to Wolves. Seeing as tippman could well double up on Birmingham clean sheets, gooner dave may well choose the safer option of covering that slightly by playing the former Manchester United keeper.

Moving on to defence and, somewhat surprisingly, Paul Konchesky is the only common player. Alex and Ashley Cole perhaps cancel each other out, but one could quite easily outscore the other by a margin. For me, it’s tippman that has the bigger selection dilemmas this weekend. There must be a temptation to play Gary Cahill in the hope of another bore draw, but that’s a bit of a long-shot to say the least. If last week is anything to go by though, defence isn’t where this contest will be won or lost.

So, onto the front eight. As I mentioned, both have the impressive Dutchman at Spurs’ a likely absentee, and other than that only Nani and Tim Cahill cancel each other out. When you consider both their cheap options have away trips, it looks like the key to victory will be how their respective expensive players perform. For tippman, that’s Florent Malouda and Nicolas Anelka at home to Everton, and Dimitar Berbatov in Blackpool. For gooner dave, that’s Carlos Tevez and an out-of-sorts Didier Drogba. One final thing to note is gooner dave’s trio of Newcastle players, compared to tippman’s zero. How Newcastle perform looks likely to shape how this final plays out.

Let’s not forget our 3rd place play-off also taking place this week, as DRP and The Von battle it out for a free £50 bet courtesy of Paddy Power.

I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing both our finalists the best of luck this weekend, as they attempt to write themselves into the Fantasy Football Scout history books, as well as earn an early Christmas bonus. I’ll bring you news of how the final played out next week.

Chances are he won't drop again this evening but he's almost certain to tomorrow night. A drop of 0.1 per week is likely until there's news of a return - if he is, as optimists suggest, back for Chelsea then he may only get down to 8.3.

Andy Anson says it's not worth bidding for WC again until FIFA "not currupt" slight paraphrase there maybe.

Perhaps it is time for the FA to start looking seriously at the issues other than backhanders which seperate our ideas about the future of world football and Fifa's.

Video technology being one of the glaringly obvious.

What do the esteemed and knowledgable of this site think?

    from sunderland forum

"If the decision is only based on the pitch, inside stadium and surrounding the stadium conditions it will be on imo.

If they take into consideration the surrounding area and travel conditions then no chance. In my street the snow is 2 foot deep in places on the pavements and the roads are terrible to drive on when hardly any cars are parked there. It will be a nightmare to drive on if cars are parked up like normal on a match day."

The "upside" is gyan will have a double gw coming up. Might only be in the new year I suppose. And by then you might be able to use WC to get double gw players.

And of course, he ignores the advice.

FPL is a fun game mate, I never forced anyone to make a transfer, I brought in Cahill in the early part of the season as someone said he was defo playing then didnt. My OWN fault.

Don't get all the fuss about the WC bid. England has had the WC before, Russia hasn't so why shouldn't they have a turn? Also, it will help Russia's overall infrastructure (e.g. roads, transport) a lot more than it would help England's. Also they are trying to promote football in areas where it is not so established already. England is already the "home of football" as you love telling the rest of the world.

I don't understand why people in England seem to think it is their divine right to have been handed the WC and so there must be some conspiracy why they haven't. It is not all about how many "celebs" (Prince W, Becks, Cammy) you send over to shake hands with people!!

For me the problem is about clearly setting the parameters and having a tangible set of criteria on which to judge bids.

If FIFA announce in advance that they want to take the world cup to new areas of the world, fine. But don't string everybody along, rate England's bid as "technically" the best on all the judging criteria, and then award it to Russia because it's more deserving or because it's their turn.

Just make everything transparent from the outset, have a larger pool of countries voting, don't vote on two venues at the same time, and set and stick to clear judging criteria.

      That is all.

I thought the double bid party was because they wanted to increase the preparation time from 8 to 12 years from now on.

Or maybe FIFA just needed funds badly?

Btw, if you are really interested, there is a documentary made around the time Blatter became president, when the other major candidate, a Swedish bloke, tells how messed up he thinks Blatter is. He foretold of this corruption...

Agreed. Who says they don't have a set of criteria? E.g. taking WC to other areas of the world, letting everyone have a "turn", stadia quality, finances to be committed, quality of management structure. Maybe they do and Russia was the best overall.

If that's the case MJ, then they should be transparent about it. Then each voting member can score the bids based on these criteria and their voting cards can be seen by the world's press afterwards. It would also ensure the countries such as the USA and England could assess their chances of winning more accurately before deciding whether to put in a bid.

To be fair MJ, that's total crap.

England fans are no more convinced they are nailed on to win tournaments than fans of other medium to large footballing countries. The red tops go over the top - as do the Italian press and Bild in Germany for example - but the majority of England fans actually predict abject failure as the default position and then adopt a kind of "told you so" attitude when we inevitably lose.

I don't buy into the whole idea of the "arrogance" of English football. Certainly existed up the early 1960s, but now only really exists in the marketing departments of TV companies and newspapers trying to shift copy.

I told them they were deluded and that Germany would be too good for England. England were then outclassed as I predicted.

Maybe, but not to the extent that England does. It is famous for it, and only the English themselves can't see it. Talksport pundits are a good example of this - always saying how "on paper" England have the best team in the world. Er, no they don't! So many players are overrated...Glenn Johnson (can't defend), Steven Gerrard (was great not anymore), Jamie Carragher(too slow for the modern game), John Terry (limited chest thumper), Gareth Barry (ordinary), James Milner (ditto), Jermaine Defoe (no all round game), Emile Heskey (lacks confidence), the list goes on

The tabloids always talk up the national team before big tourneys, and the broadsheets usually talk them down, say they've got no chance.

Most (not all) fans are somewhere in between. We want England to do well so badly that we let it cloud our judgment, but why shouldn't we? Where's the fun in going into a tournament with a 'we've got no chance' attitude?

And please, please don't use Talksport pundits as an example of anything - they employ Stan 'Rooney to Citeh is a done deal' Collymore, for starters.

It was never off George. Come back this time tomorrow if you want weather reassurance. It's too early to get worthwhile info.

    Morning all, hows it going?

Im looking at the weather prospects and considering my changes now!

If you have a second take a glance...

    Im considering

    Alex-Kolarov

That would give me an 11 to start if the Blackpool game goes ahead and Coleman or Jara play (I assume Jara will!) Tempted to do more but Im think less is the way forward...ideas?!

None that are worth anything Im afraid mate, got family in newcastle but not out there...according to them Sunderland runs on coal and a hamster in a wheel so they would never be able to defrost a pitch but thats bias me thinks!

With the drama surrounding "Katiegate" and her being exposed as a fraud, I thought I should rather stop pretending to be a 40yr old male from Cape Town, SA and just post a pic of myself.

          All well on this side.

That is a solid transfer Tom.

I would just leave it as late as possible tomorrow to see if any information comes through.

I would have thought for the 3 O'clock kick offs they would give cancellation info before 11.30 for the away supporters/people travelling etc.

I wouldn't - just another Benitez error, brought in because he can speak Spanish.

i may be crazier bj, my transfer this week was to bring gerrard IN. Wanted to cash out on VDV and taking advatage of gerrards lowest drop. Feel like my squad is good enough to get through the weekend, weather permitting.

I would prefer Malouda, Nani, Bale, Nasri, Arshavin, N'Zogbia, MGP, Dunn, Silva, YayaT, Brunt, Jarvis or even Modric before Maxi.
