Why Liverpool’s use of crosses affects Mane’s Fantasy appeal

From Gameweek 25 of last season onwards, Sadio Mane (£12.1m) has outscored Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) in Fantasy Premier League by 190 points to 152.

The main difference appears to be explosiveness: both players have blanked in ten of their 25 starts over this period but the Senegal international has recorded three times as many double-digit hauls (nine v three).

We discussed the various arguments in the Mane v Salah debate upon the release of the FPL price list in the summer, with one consideration being the Egyptian’s positional move from the central striker of a 4-2-3-1 to his usual right-wing role in a 4-3-3.

Another factor was Liverpool’s use of crosses – and it’s this particular tactical shift that we’ll analyse in the Members article below.

No wonder Chelsea are doing so well. Those are some steep fines!

Mate, I reckon my club has similar fines.

£500 per save made during a match.
£2000 if you win an aeriel battle in the penalty box
£5000 if you keep a cleansheet
£1000 per kilometre ran during a match.
£20,000 if you play in your proper position

Would explain our situation a lot, really

Any Palace fans/watchers able to explain to underperformance of their key FPL assets recently/all season?
Mili’s quality seems to have dropped
Zaha looks as uninvolved as he’s ever been and wasteful when he gets the chance
Mili looks uninspired and has dropped in quality, guess he gets most of his confidence in pens
Finally not been watching PVA but really want him in. Recent stats have been shocking, is this just fixtures based or has Roy set them up in such a horrid way to block them?

It's a different set up this time around,

The marginalisation of Townsend says it all really. He was one of our top performers last season but is barely getting a look in this time around. We simply don't look half as dangerous on the break as we did. The non -selection of Camarasa is also grating. That said it has been a truly horrific run of fixtures and the ultra defensive set up may switch round slightly soon. Zaha is key of course. He's been way off tbh and there's a growing number who'd be happy to see him go.

PvA historically has fed off the space Zaha creates down his side. Think he's a decent call simply because Palace have a run from 14 -30 where there second hardest fixture is Arsenal at home. There should be plenty of clean sheets and some attacking returns there.

Nothing to base this on but I have hunch that Willian will be used more in the 'bigger' matches - e.g. Man City away this GW. And Pulisic more favoured for the 'easier' matches.

Mostly due to Willian's experience and Pulisic's inexperience in the PL.

Seen a bit of chat lately regarding people looking to get PVA after the 'Pool match.

Looks like a good pick and Palace have great fixtures, but how do you fit him in with Rico, Janmaat, Lundstram, Tomori, Soyuncu, TAA or Robertson forming the basis of many defences? All those mentioned seem to good value to take out.

    1. GreennRed

Take out Robertson because 14m is too much for two defenders in a team not keeping many cleansheets.

Alison back hasn't had the cleansheet effect I expected too after Adrian. There might bs something in this highline defence they're using this year.

Thoughts on this wildcard team? Have sunk like a stone so have tried to find a balance between the core and some genuine fixture led differentials for next 4.

    Foster (4m)
    TAA Lundstram Guilbert/Tomori/Baldock (rotating)
Mane KDB Maddy Richarlison (one week punt Pulsic/Mount after) (Hayden)
    Vardy Lacazette Ings

    Hit me...

    1. Witty Pun: Not good at this…
      • 7 Years

I prefer O'Connell to Baldock, just personal preference though.

Lacazette < Abraham, I can tell this is an attempt to differntiate from the pack but it's too dangerous imo. He's the highest owned player in the game and showing no signs of slowing down, with good fixtures. Meanwhile, Lacazette has looked dog ever since returning from injury.

Foster is not bad, I like Ryan though I think he'll be this season's 4.5

Mané/Maddison/Pulisic looks great, not too convinced by KdB but what are you gonna do with the money elsewise.

I can't find any concrete arguments against Ings but it feels weird nonetheless.

If I have Tammy it is just too templaye. I would rather double on chelsea mid. Pulsic looks unbelievable right now.

I simply have to gamble somewhere.

Arsenal have the best two fixtures next and have to win both.

Laca can become Tammy easy enough. But home to Saints v away to City... if I can't gamble in that fixture what is the point of even trying.

If you are happy with doing Laca to Abraham next week it´s fine by me, Ings got nice fixtures but Southampton does not create anything so feels a bit like Wilson, he gets goals and assists but it seems a bit accidental. I think Abraham and Jimi is better combination and while your aim is to shoot up the rank, that is not done by too many diffs, i like that one in midfield with Rich but you will get yourself in trouble with 3 and 4, Foster is nice pick, him and Rich is enough non template choices, because it can get you into trouble within the next weeks. You are betting that Cheslea won´t score vs City and that Abraham and Mount blanks, fair enough, but the risk is much higher when you are without both and you prob want them in next game. That´s why i like Richarlison pick but not Laca, as you then betting against both chelsea assets not to score and you are putting yourself in a position where you might need them back, thus creating restrictions on your future transfer plans.

    7. ZeBestee
      • 9 Years

As an Arsenal fan, I rarely switch my forwards to Laca, he is a good player but he is just not an FPL player for me. Auba is soo much better hence the price difference. I would still go with Abraham as differential may either do well like template, or may do worse thus further sinking your team rank.

Another forward who will almost be nailed in my team is Jiminez. The formation change has brought about more attacking threat and Jota and co. will help him to even further attacking returns.

The defence is good but Guilbert would rather be someone like Soy, who plays for a better defence team. Pulisic as you said will be important given how attacking Chelsea are and Ings is a gamble imo. Martial is another gamble, but he is a good one imo as he is a bit cheaper and always makes United play better when he is fit. Good luck.

Which three teams do you think get relegated this season?
Norwich are the bookies' favourite by a distance with 1/4 odds, but the other spots seem quite competitive this year.
Odds for the other teams to get relegated -
    Watford 5/4
    Southampton 6/4
    Villa 9/4
    Newcastle 10/3
    West ham 11/2

The odds indicate that it's going to be close, who are you tipping for relegation?

This is the least predictable season in a while, all the genuinely shi* teams have been relegated and any of those could make it out. I guarantee most predictions will look silly come the end of the season, just like my convinction that Sheff Utd wouldn't have enough quality and would end up 18th

Saints have to get 10+ points from the next 6 fixtures to have any chance. That’s very doable but even with best case I’m not sure we get much past 45 points before this all repeats next year.

Kinda prefer relegation, cull the squad and have a few years in the championship before hopefully having a fresh run at the big time.

Agreed. I'm looking at getting Ings in for that run. Like him as a player and he usually produces good stats and points. Southampton, as a team, are just such a concern though.

But like you say, it's potentially a season-defining period for them so they'll need to try and win games by scoring goals, and Ings is their best player/goal threat.

Yeah this is a genuine concern of mine too. I half think he might be saved though for Southampton's more 'winnable' games during that period. And their days between matches isn't too bad:

              Sat 30 Nov 17:30 14 WAT (H)
              Wed 4 Dec 19:30 15 NOR (H)
              Sun 8 Dec 14:00 16 NEW (A)
              Sat 14 Dec 17:30 17 WHU (H)
              Sat 21 Dec 15:00 18 AVL (A)
              Thu 26 Dec 15:00 19 CHE (A)
              Sat 28 Dec 15:00 20 CRY (H)
              Wed 1 Jan 15:00 21 TOT (H)

Chelsea looks like an obvious time to rest him. But other than that, there seems to be enough time between games for him to hopefully recover. What do you think?

Southampton for sure imo. Not enough quality and that 9-0 really hurt confidence. The last spot is hard. I think one of Newcastle, Watford, West Ham.

I think Villa have enough quality to survive. Newcastle surprisingly seem to have some fight in them, so I'm going to go Watford. Think they're a weaker team than West Ham in terms of personnel and once Fabianski comes back WHam will be better and close the season stronger.

Deeney has been atrocious for a long time. They are in no way shape of form reliant on him and are better off with him out. He was also on the bench last game and wasnt even brought on as a sub which suggests hes not a main part of Florez' plans.

Deeney just runs around being "hard" _brings very little else to the team.

Norwich and Southampton are dead - third spot may well be swung by a key injury/January signing. West Ham have fallen off a cliff without Fabianski and should return to form eventually. Will be interesting to see how Newcastle fare without Lascelles or Villa if Grealish is out for an extended period. Watford could take large strides once Deeney returns, or someone else might fall and they end up being rubbish again. Even Everton, Brighton or Bournemouth could go on some rotten runs if they lose some key men.

      Norwich, Southampton and Watford.

I could see Newcastle and West Ham getting dragged into it too, but its quite a difficult question to answer right now as a couple of them will no doubt change manager, and there is a transfer window.

Way to early to be writing off Southampton in my view. I suspect they've just got their horror run in early.

My guess is that pretty much all the teams from 8 down will go on a run of 2/3 points from 6 matches and it'll be topsy turvy with possibly a team dropping out which looked safe with ten to go.

Newcastle would be my favourites - very easy to see them imploding. After that Norwich and perhaps Watford. But really could be anyone.

Really tricky this year which is good as the top four and champions seem sewn up currently.

Villa and Watford for me currently. Though West Ham and Newcastle could easily get thrown in the mix alongside Southampton. There's always a team with a decent start that really mess up too.

Villa have got to be in the mix. On paper they had favourable fixtures to start the season and their run in looks tricky.

West Ham are possibly the worst team I've seen this season when they played Newcastle, but I think they'll be safe.

Hopefully Newcastle should be okay. If the front three could start taking their chances then it wouldn't even be a worry.

No this year - it's too tight that there are HUGE factors left to play a role:

      - Injuries
      - Return from injuries
      - Change of manager
      - Signings
      - Head to head games

Any of these can swing the whole back race around.

I would say the bigger factor for a teams demise is lack of defence rather than inability to score goals
Sheffield United only 1 goal per game but their D is solid

Norwich and saints are poor at both ends. If Villa get relegated it could really ruin them with the amount of money they spent on offseason on transfers
I would say Brighton are an outside chance to go down if they don’t take advantage of home fixtures
Newcastle have some fight so I’d be surprised if they were in the battle
3rd spot too hard to call, but Watford look the front runners given it will be hard to turn around the poor goal difference

      B) has a smaller SV - you'll shoot up or down the ranks slower.

I'm not benching Lundstram for the next 6 weeks or so, you never know when he will haul. As a United fan there's every chance that the Blades will keep a clean sheet against us. It all depends if Martial, Rashford and James are firing. Plus Jimenez looks on-it at the moment.

Think it will all come down to Klopp's pressser. Klopp mentioned fluid in his ankle so whether that is serious or not who knows.

For me more about playing through the pain insted of serious.

He has the IB to rest so let's see what happens.

I'm happy with VAJ up top. But I'm monitoring Trossard, might even pony up to get Grealish.

Me too same front three and Cantwell still in. I’m sure there will be other urgent issues/injuries needing fixing after international games

Will probably do that when I have 2FT and no other issues

Switched to Maddison with Mount Ings rotating in 343 352. It's getting to that time of year where first sub gets on as often as not.

Not only that, there’s also Pool blank gw18 so sorting the bench is important

      very tidy!

Greenwood out down the line is only thing that needs looking at but no rush there
