Fighting ‘decision fatigue’ by buying Jack Grealish

‘Decision fatigue’ is described as “the deteriorating quality of decisions made by an individual after a long session of decision making.”

Steve Jobs famously wore the same black shirt and jeans every single day to avoid having to make a decision on what to wear, thereby dedicating his efforts to making better choices that actually matter and avoid burnout.

Similarly, I work in a management position that requires me to take critical decisions on a daily basis, so I actively try to conserve my mental energy towards those endeavours rather than on mundane daily tasks.

The last thing I want to do on a Saturday morning is to spend mental energy on my Fantasy Premier League team when I’m already exhausted from the demands of the working week.

How my team got on in Gameweek 13
I’ve left plenty of points on my bench recently

In previous seasons, in order to eliminate decision making, I’ve gone with three big hitters in defence, usually from the so-called top-six sides who I can play every week regardless of opposition.

However, 2019/20 has proved to be somewhat different with the big boys struggling for clean sheets and the cheap defenders such as Lundstram offering exceptional value.

Since I activated my Wildcard in Gameweek 9, I have left a total of 67 points on the bench over four rounds (15, 19, 23 and 10).

Almost all of these have been points in defence from the likes of Caglar Söyüncü (£4.9m), John Lundstram (£4.9m) and Diego Rico (£4.4m).

I usually blindly follow the bookies’ odds for clean sheets when picking defenders but with that method not working out as well this year, I find myself dedicating more time than I want to in researching statistics like expected goals conceded (xGC) and big chances conceded.

Looking at the fixtures ahead for my defence, in the Rate My Team tool, it doesn’t look like it’s going to get any easier.

The RMT tool suggests benching Söyüncü in Gameweek 14 (EVE), 15 (WAT) and benching Fikayo Tomori (£4.8m) in Gameweek 17 (BOU), which again looks like a decision that could go either way and is likely to take up a lot of my mental energy.

I’m comfortable playing a Leicester defender pretty much every week, even away, but not so much with Chelsea. The Blues are yet to keep a clean sheet on the road this season and have shipped 12 goals on their travels.

The away fixtures up to Gameweek 20 are Manchester City, Everton, Tottenham and Arsenal, not games in which I expect clean sheets for the Blues.

Handily enough, while looking at rotation pairs, I noticed that Aston Villa and Chelsea’s fixtures rotate almost perfectly home and away till the new year.

The FFS Season Ticker from the Members Area has helped me identify a defensive rotation of Chelsea and Aston Villa

Rotating a Villa attacker with Tomori gives me NEW, WHU, AVL, LEI, BOU, SOU, NOR, wat – a great run of fixtures. I’m even covered for Leicester’s Gameweek 19 meeting with Liverpool as both Chelsea (SOU) and Villa (NOR) have decent fixtures that week.

Since my fellow pundit Tom Freeman made the observation about Jack Grealish’s (£5.9m) new advanced role, I have been looking for an excuse to get him in my side but was put off by his injury. With the news that he’s back in training, I’m likely to sacrifice Ayoze Perez (6.1m) with one of my free transfers to make way for the Englishman.

Another option is to downgrade Mason Mount (£6.8m) to someone like John Fleck (£4.8m) and upgrade Perez to Martial or Christian Pulisic (£7.4m) but I am not keen on acquiring the American’s services ahead of a period which sees Chelsea play 11 matches in 40 days.

The Champions League group is very tight with three teams sitting on seven points and I wouldn’t be surprised if Chelsea fielded their strongest line-up in that competition as they play West Ham and Bournemouth, both at Stamford Bridge right after those games.

Pulisic is yet to play three games a week at the top level in his career and with a hip injury problem to manage I think it is highly unlikely he does so now.

Martial, however, is someone I’m keeping an eye on but I like only one of the Red Devils’ next four fixtures, which sees them travel to Sheffield United and Manchester City and host Aston Villa and Spurs.

Fantasy Football is supposed to be fun. Very often the right decision does not lead to the right outcome. As much as I try, I find it difficult not to regret a decision that has gone wrong, especially when its something like 14 points vs two.

It makes me question my subsequent decisions as well and at times even my decision-making process as a whole which naturally flows out of Fantasy Football into my daily work life.

I’m going to try my best to stick to the aforementioned plan and avoid having to make a decision on who to play in defence every week, focusing my attention on more important decisions such as captaincy, which has been a challenge in itself this season.

He is a top top manager although I don't approve of his public rants about the players at MU... Congrats on getting him, he can surely write the next chapter for Spurs.

Good point. He might not make the forwards a more attractive FPL option (though Kane can't really be a less attractive option than he is right now), but I think Spurs defenders will be back on the table now.

Wanted also do KDB to Son however probably should wait and see how Mou will play?

Owning Gazzaniga looking pretty good now!
If Levy provides the money, and if Spurs can ride Mou's occasional press conference as**ole routine, think they'll win something in his time their. Watch him call Unai a "specialist in failure" sometime this season.

Even as a neutral, I cannot wait for the next north london derby, doubt Unai will last that long.

Jose could well be Spurs answer to their problems, he likes 4-2-3-1
which puts Kane where he needs to be without needing to drop deep as the no10 sorts that. I would not be surprised if players like Kane and Eriksen were behind Poch getting the sack

A mid to attack line-up like this imo can bring the results and goals back for spurs
      Ndombele Eriksen
      Moura Alli Son
      Kane

People getting very excited are forgetting this isn't the early Mourinho, this is the Mourinho how stifles attacking players with his ultra negative style of play.

His time at United highlighted how other managers have left him behind.

Really poor appointment in my view.

While I agree, Spurs need a trophy and he will probably win them a domestic cup or two. Ultimately, Spurs won nothing under Poch with their golden generation.

They've had to sell their soul somewhat, and will likely be worse off in a few seasons, but at least they'll probably win something.

His biggest issue is his man management and tendency to bully his players into and out of form. If he has learnt to adapt, I think he will be a success. He is one of the best tacticians the game has seen, it will be good (or not!) to see a rejuvenated Mourinho.

There's a perception that Poch didn't deserve the sack and the it was all on the players and Levy, but Ornstein's article suggests otherwise.

the fact that Salah had only pace back when he start his career at Liverpool and be the player at his confidence now proves that the attribute is crucial for striker. He used to toe poke the ball to score lmao.

Diagonal runs, runs to space, shot accuracy, shot conversion, hold up play and distribution all far more important

Diagonal runs, runs to space all under the category of Movement off the ball. You make those runs in the end & do not have the pace to finish up the space you created for yourself is as good as nothing to me. You know at the start of every season, Pace is a very important part of the fitness test.

As a striker you may not be the fastest of the bunch but you need that pace. I would not say it is the "least important" although I fully understand your point of view nevertheless, pace is essential imo

Yes pace is crucial especially in modern football where positions are usually switched midgame due to diagonal runs.

Else you'll end up with a traditional Luca Toni, who will have to make up with a lot of other attributes to cover up for the lack of pace.

Not saying it's the most important. But definitely isn't the least.

& Kane has become too slow nowadays. This is why it is easier for defenders to handle him. Especially when he plays teams that set up in a 3-5-2 formation.

Sitting with only 1 Liverpool player (TAA), as well as Sterling and KDB.
Thinking of holding onto my FT this week and captaining Sterling. . .

            Am I crazy ?

Best captain option this week mate. City by far the best attack in the league, can score 5 against any opposition. The double up will be fruitful whilst others are moving away

asked this a few days ago but more pertinent now.

            A) Gazzaniga / Soyuncu

            B) Ryan / Tomori

Nor looking forward to seeing Jose's Miserable face and laundry list if excuses gracing the premier League again. He's like the Donald Trump of Football managers.

As a United fan Its a case of be careful what you wish for Spurs. You may win a cup but Mourinho seems to bring a toxic element to clubs and he's got worse the last few teams he's managed, and not learned from the error of his ways.

I got something valuable listening to the scoutcast this morning.
Joe came out with a plan to split the upcoming busy schedule into "2 seasons"
After GW 18 fixtures, they do start to turn. When all I have been looking at is how to handle GW18 I would have missed this important information.
I keep my own spreadsheet, looking forward 6 weeks and seeing what type of teams I can play over the period. Knowing I have good fixtures until this point and having a playable GW18 team, I was relatively satisfied. My natural consideration for player gametime comes into play and having 3 pool players at this time sends me a message of doubt having 11 players on the field.
All I can say is I have been fairly lucky in my choices and getting to GW21 does not seem too complicated, provided I have all my team playing including my 3 subs.
Citeh and Pool I have ignored from a fixture point of view but what I do have is no triple ups at this point.
I have some housekeeping to do in the form of replacing Kelly and Rico, but having Mcginn as my lowest rated forward and he fits in so nicely i terms of fixtures.
I will triple up on Pool because it is too good to ignore but I will probably only have one for GW18,19.
I have 2 Leicester players (Vardy and Soy) atm and I can handle Soy not playing for GW18,19
I have 2 Chelsea and I am not that worried about Abraham and Mount playing Spurs GW18.
I can upgrade Jimmi to a ManU player from GW19 too, making use of Joe's information.
Rico and Kelly have good fixtures GW19 and 20, but I have concerns
No WC or FH necessary for me barring unforeseen disasters makes my life so much easier.

              Pope Ryan
              TAA Soy Lund Rico Kelly
              Martial Mount Mane KDB McGinn
              Jimmi Vardy Abraham

Thanks...yep that really struck me about winter that it is in two distinct blocks.

Interesting tha Palace are the annoying glue that brings them together 🙂

I think back to that early Soyuncu park him on the bus move and think the same could apply to Villa in particular. Don't want them now but over Christmas they are packed with cheap diffs.

I guess one question is how best to handle GW18-21 if you have a WC still intact. I've been looking into it but can't seem to figure out the best usage.

You will want to have Liverpool assets for GW17 with a nice looking home fixture against Watford, but then you can possibly do without them until GW20/21 (Wolves/Sheffield).

Perhaps transferring out Liverpool/Leicester players for GW18 and getting them back on WC GW20/21 is the best bet? Or is it best to WC for GW18 to remove Liverpool and Leicester assets to be able to spread funds more evenly?

If you have a WC intact consider a switch from a LIV triple up to a MNC triple up. MNC have the best fixtures in the league from GW19 -24.

Same issue. I’m thinking of Wildcarding out the Pool players on GW18 (I’m on one atm but will be two/ three by GW17) and then bringing them back in slowly. Bring a mid in for GW19 and then defender for GW20. The issue is it is quite prescriptive.

However, selling Pool players ahead of WAT at home on GW17 seems like madness?

This is the time when skills and planning is more important than luck in this game. This is the time where "good managers" can make advantage over "casuals" as many called them.

I still have my WC so think its a bit easier but without it it can be done too like Kopkloppers said.
I currently own 2 Liv (plan is to have 3 next week), 3 Che and 3 Lei players and happy about it but Liv blank and fixtures swing after GW 18 says that we must have a plan to navigate it.

Having 2FT in GW 18 will be really helpful. I plan to sell 2 Liv players before their blank and get...well anyone as funds wont be a problem. Probably will get City duo as they start nice run of fix but at this point I can make some punt picks just for 1-2 games as will WC soon.
So after GW18 will WC. It will be GW 19 or GW 20 depends on how fast I want Liv players back as they play Lei in GW 19 so best idea is to get them back in GW 20 probably.

This sounds more flexible than what I said. The only downside is you will have three LEI players away at MCI and three CHE players away at TOT. So potentially low scoring GW18? But more flexibility thereafter I gues
