Grealish back on the FPL radar after eye-catching return from injury

Aston Villa 2-0 Newcastle United

  • Goals: Conor Hourihane (£5.7m), Anwar El Ghazi (£5.5m)
  • Assists: Jack Grealish (£5.9m), Hourihane
  • Bonus: Hourihane x3, Frederic Guilbert (£4.4m) x2, Matt Targett (£4.4m) x1

The final match of Gameweek 13 was the story of Conor Hourihane‘s (£5.7m) dead-ball expertise and Newcastle United’s inability to deal with it.

A non-descript game seemed to have all the hallmarks of a goalless draw in the first half an hour, with the Magpies’ trademark backs-to-the-wall approach to away fixtures initially working well.

There hadn’t really been a chance of note until Conor Hourihane (£5.7m) struck a superb free-kick past Martin Dubravka (£5.0m) after 32 minutes, with the Irish midfielder turning provider soon after when assisting Anwar El Ghazi (£5.5m) from another set-piece situation.

During the international break, we discussed how Villa had struggled at free-kicks and corners with Hourihane out of the side.

For all his limitations as a central midfielder, Hourihane’s dead-ball deliveries do give Villa an extra attacking dimension and they were ultimately the difference between the two sides on Monday.

He could indeed have had another assist late on, had Wesley (£6.0m) not fired at Dubravka from point-blank range.

Dean Smith said of the Ireland international after full-time:

He wasn’t happy when I left him out of the game against Manchester City away and I understand why, but it’s a squad game and I have decisions to make.

I knew we’d spend an awful lot of time defending and today I knew we’d have a lot more of the ball.

He’s answered me back in the best way. He scored against Norwich, he scored against Brighton and he’s scored again today, so I’m really pleased for him.

The Magpies, meanwhile, have conceded from a set play in each of the last three Gameweeks.

No side allowed more headed chances or efforts from set-piece situations in 2018/19 and a change of regime hasn’t improved much, with Steve Bruce’s outfit again joint-bottom for headed opportunities conceded this season and in the bottom seven for attempts from corners and free-kicks conceded.

Indeed, over the last six Gameweeks, no other club has allowed more of either.

This may well be of interest to owners of Kevin De Bruyne (£10.2m), with Manchester City up next for Newcastle in Gameweek 14.

Aston Villa assets may not be top of many Fantasy managers’ shopping lists at present, with the Villans third-bottom of our Season Ticker over the next four matches.

There are some appetising matches beyond that, though, and Jack Grealish (£5.9m) and John McGinn (£5.9m) may well be key midfield targets come Gameweek 18.

The returning Grealish, back after a month out, was at the centre of most of Villa’s play on Monday, having more touches than any other player on show.

It was a little ironic that, for all of his creativity and goal threat against the Magpies, his sole attacking return was an assist for a lay-off for Hourihane’s free-kick.

That was his fifth FPL contribution in six starts and the move to a narrow left-wing role from Gameweek 7 has only boosted his appeal.

Grealish is also the most fouled player in the Premier League this season, which, as we’ve seen with Wilfried Zaha (£6.6m) at Crystal Palace, can be a source of Fantasy assists.

Unsurprisingly, it was Grealish who won both of Villa’s free-kicks for the goals.

Smith said of his talismanic midfielder after full-time:

He’s a constant threat and he moves around the pitch really well into positions where people don’t want to come and tackle him.

The opposition get frustrated and two free-kicks against him end up with two goals for us.

Knowing Jack, he’ll be disappointed he hasn’t got on the scoresheet himself.

McGinn, the highest-owned player in the Monday night game, blanked for the fifth time in six Gameweeks but he too was a threat, if only in the last quarter of an hour when the game opened up.

The Scotland international fired narrowly wide from inside the box as the match entered stoppage time before striking the woodwork with the final kick of the game.

The fit-again Tom Heaton (£4.5m) and Villa kept their first clean sheet since Gameweek 5, meanwhile, although one look at the short-term fixture list will deter many from reconsidering the Villans’ defensive options for now.

Newcastle themselves have a tricky double-header against City and Sheffield United coming up and will likely not appeal to FPL bosses until Gameweek 16.

The Magpies had scored six goals in the three previous Gameweeks but five of those strikes were by defenders; not a sustainable source of goals, you’d think.

The occasionally brilliant Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.4m) was by some distance the pick of United’s players, registering more than three times as many take-ons as anyone else at Villa Park and testing Heaton with a curling, 46th-minute effort.

With a continued lack of support around him, however, attacking returns may be irregular at best, despite his eye-catching trickery.

A Federico Fernandez (£4.4m) header and an Andy Carroll (£5.4m) volley – both of which were saved – were as close as the Magpies came to ruining Heaton’s clean sheet but in truth, Villa looked more likely to score a third than concede a consolation.

Bruce cited the absence of skipper Jamaal Lascelles (£4.4m) as a mitigating factor, saying:

The first half, in particular, we did not do enough with or without the ball. We felt we were harshly done by with two free-kicks, but the way Conor Hourihane has executed them made it a difficult night.

Conor is very good, I have seen it many times and he has the accuracy and power to score. The second one, our defenders have to defend better, too many stood and watched it.

Jamaal Lascelles is our captain and has been playing very well. Last week the defenders were excellent but you are always going to miss your best players.

    Hi Wolves fans,

didn't get the change to watch wolves lately but looking at upgrading my defense. Wondering how Doherty can fit in.

Is Traore hurting his fantasy appeal? looks like his attacking threats aren't as high as last year?

He came close to scoring against bournemouth. I think he is still a threat going forward although too expensive imo

I had a look at him in my Pro Pundits article last week. If anything, I think the new shape helps him, as Traore often stays wide allowing Doherty to cut in. Looked lively vs Bournemouth, but I admit his price makes it difficult.

Smooth: Vardy (C), Pope, Mané and Jimi delivering with a Soy CS. Achieving a small green arrow despite no MCI and an injured Salah

Rough: Blanks from the CHE boys, TAA frustrating again and Willems coming with a measly 1pt from the bench.

All in all happy to come out without a disaster. 67 (-4) moving from 296k > 272k

Rough: Double Sheffield Utd defence punt backfired miserably after looking like a masterstroke for 70 minutes. Salah blank, Cantwell 3rd on the bench.

Double Leicester defence, Son punt has kicked off nicely, (V)ardy, and Ppope

Rough: For the 11th time this season, Liverpool conceded precisely 1 goal, generally late in the game. My double Pool defence strategy is testing me to the limits!

Smooth: Brought in Söyüncü for Otamendi. Captained Vardy. Got Cantwell points off the bench.
Rough: On Friday switched Tomori to 2nd on my bench and Greenwood 3rd, so I got Tomori's 1 point instead of the 5 for Greenwood. Also benched Pope and played Heaton, but that only cost me 2 points.

Rough: defenders and nailing captain are my worst enemies this season - AWB (bought him gw11 over Soy, big mistake) and Rico both 0pts, Sterling captain

Smooth: Firmino finally in the points, midfield doing great with Perez and Son as differentials and KDB and Vardy shields. overall 67pts with a saved transfer and 300k green back into top 1mil.

Rough; Salah benched, made worse with Mane scoring and Rico subbing in for 0!

Smooth; Vardy(c), Lundstram, Robbo, Ryan, Jimenez, Tielemans all chipping in with Grealish closing out the score last night.

63 points, small drop of 3k down to 28k mostly due to not owning Mane. I think that’s my move this week. I think Lundstram, Mane and Vardy are all essential rank protectors now.

Pretty much smooth for me in the last few weeks.

75 points this week after 84 last week and 75 the week before bringing me to 163k from 883k three weeks ago.

That's Vardy in for Wilson for GW11 (24 point gain)
Mane, Maddison and Jimenez in for Sterling, Cantwell and Aguero GW 12 (25 point gain - 8 point hit)
Robertson in for Tomori GW13 (5 point gain)

Not counting captain choices (I'd be even better off), that's a net 46 point swing in my favour so far. The lesson I'm taking is to be more aggressive with my transfers. Not necessarily taking hits but getting in players I want for the next few fixtures rather than worrying about replacing the odd player who isn't performing. If I have a duffer on my bench, he's not really costing me much but if I transfer them out then I'm not using the transfer on getting in the next form/fixtures best picks!

Not really specific to this game week, but wildcarded in week 9 and have gone from 680,000 to 68,000 since that week, with only 2 changes to the team since the wildcard, even wasting a free transfer when I've had 2.
The team has been fairly ffscout template as well which I think shows we worry about differentials a bit too much at this stage of the season.

71 points this week, nice returns from mane, pope, vardy, de bruyne, jimenez, and pereira did well for me. Mount the only big 'rough' but his cameo was at least better then rico's 0 pointer off the bench.

        Definitely rough;
Punished for going for a differential captain in Richa.
Ings missing out on an assist and max bonus coz someone else missed a penalty whilst Vardy cappers rewarded for him missing a penalty. Filthy

Rough : The Vardy penalty incident. I own Ryan and Maddison but do not own Vardy. Was at 26k at end of GW 12 and dropped to 74k by end of GW 13.

Had this one incident played out differently, would have been very close to top 10k.

Smooth : Have got Jimenez since GW 9 and reaping the benefits every week!

Pretty smooth - 71pts (-4) and a 4th green arrow in a row to go from 850k to 170k in a matter of weeks. My hit worked really well taking out Salah and Mount for Mane (c) and Son.

Rough - Still bitter about this. I own Vardy but didn't captain him and his EO was above 100%. When his penalty was saved by Ryan and Maddison scored the rebound, I was bouncing around as a Ryan and Maddison owner. Cue the VAR heartbreak. Would have taken Ryan up to around 10pts with bonus, Maddison probably around the 9pt mark himself, and Vardy would have been down on 2pts instead of 12pts. Don't want to work out the exact point swing but it would have been huge...

Sterling captain VAR denies clear goal. Watched the replay on MOTD over and over again. Goal should have stand.

          Ryan owner. Penalty save denied.

          Vardy not a captain.

40+ pts lost having in mind EO and thousands and thousands placed in OR lost.

The ultimate rough. Can be beaten only by Granvile when he sold Benayoun just before the 4 goals by him.

This is my worst rough in 10+ years.

Every year I bench boost on a DGW and end up not doing too great due to resting rotation etc. Was checking the fixtures now and started thinking that it might make sense to do it now already. What do you think?

        Gazzaniga (BOU H ) - Ryan (LIV A)
        Söyüncü (EVE H) - TAA (BHA H) - Tomori (WHU H)- Lundstram (WOL A) - Rico (TOT A)
        Sterling (NEW A) - Mane (BHA H) - Maddison (EVE H) - Mount (WHU H) - Traore (SHU H)
        Jimenez (SHU H) - Abraham (WHU H) - Vardy (EVE H)

Last season I had a similar thought process & decided to save BB for a non-DGW where my squad had great fixtures on paper. Up to you, but from personal experience I don't recommend. Chips will always be a crap shoot but better to have 2 goes at it than 1.

          Ryan vs liverpool
          Rico vs tottenham
          Jiminez vs Lundstram
          Are not that tempting

          I wouldn't do it anyway

Alright, I'll hold! Thanks all for weighing in!

My main "worry" was Ryan vs Liverpool but I figured that'd be 0-3 points whereas it's entirely possible that later in the season I won't have a playing keeper at all (therefore 0-3 points more than I'd have later).

Rico is a risk but I'm not convinced by Tottenham and they're playing today as well, which made me even less worried. But yes, it's still a risk and I suppose the 3-4-3 is a better option in a sensible world.

          Thanks all!

A few weeks off obviously, but for those downgrading Sterling this GW (as I am, to Son) I think it could be a good idea to bank the spare cash & use it to upgrade your 5th mid to a Villa asset in GW18 to cover the Pool blank. Grealish & co have SOT that week.

        GK :Pope Button
Def: Alexander-Arnold Söyüncü Lundstram | Kelly Diop
Mid: Mané Sterling De Bruyne Mount McTominay
        Fwd: Vardy Abraham | Greenwood

        1ft 0itb

        1) Should i hold sterling one more week

Let's hope that Amazon haven't excluded PL games from the 30 day trial, as it seems like all other functions are allowed.

For people who are saying never bench lundstram, I think you just don't have decent bench coverage.

It makes sense to have lundstram as one of your main 3 defenders if you have only 1 premier defender, but most will have Liverpool def and a Leciester def, which should be the main 2 starting defenders each week. After that preferably you have 3 rotating defenders and Lundstram is part of that rotation.

He is definitely a good choice, but realistically he isn't going to score *and hasn't* in at least half of his games, so clearly there are sometimes players with better fixtures that it makes sense to play ahead of him.

Now saying all of that. Lundy's next like 5-6 games are pretty much all ones where you'd probably start him every week anyway, but he's definitely not a 'automatic start' for anyone with a full non-bench fodder squad of 15.

I think he's just such an incredible option who could return attacking points in any game that I'd much rather have 2 points from him in my team and 6 points from some average defender on the bench. The fact that clean sheets compound his attacking returns with bonus points as well us just incredible.

I agree with your point. However, he has actually been unlucky in some games where he could have had a lot more attacking returns.

I disagree. I would play Lundstram over Soyuncu. He's proven that he's not just an OoP defender. He has 5 attacking returns, and if he was a midfielder, he'd have scored 59 points. That's the same as Mason Mount if you took away all his extra clean sheet points and goal points.

That is not a player you bench. That is a player you play every week and with those strong fixtures, I'm not gonna bench him for the next 6 probably. If he gets suspended, I have Tomori first sub who is a more than able replacement over that period as well.

He is my only decision this GW. Would you play Lundstram (wol) over Taylor (CPA)? Playing Taylor would be doubling up with Pope (CPA). It is a sword/shield decision.

It's a very nice shiny shield vs a blunt sword. Play Lundstram. It's not close.

He is absolutely an automatic starter.

Unlucky to have an assist rather than a goal vs United. Sheff United defensively are excellent bar their late implosion. Lundy was on for 12 points.

He’s 4.0 defender playing as an attacking midfielder for a defensively good team.

I’m not sure there’s ever been a player who should be as automatic a pick as him
