Burnley 1-0 Newcastle

Goals: Chris Wood (£6.2m)

Assists: Ashley Westwood (£5.4m)

Bonus Points: Wood x3, Westwood x2, Erik Pieters x1 (£4.5m)

Burnley got back to much-needed winning ways with a 1-0 win over Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.

While Sean Dyche celebrated the first three-points since Gameweek 13, the crucial development for Fantasy Premier League managers was a return to normal service: clean sheets at Turf Moor.

“We wanted a reaction to the defeat at Tottenham last week, when we weren’t ourselves. The first thing was the performance, but you also want the win and we’ve just about edged that, I feel. We’ve had a one v one and knocked on the door a few times. I was pleased with the performance actually because they are a tough side. Steve (Bruce) has got them organised and they are solid, so to get the win was very pleasing.” – Sean Dyche

“A clean sheet and three points are what you dream of. It was a difficult game in difficult conditions but one we came through. We knew they are a good outfit who’ve had some positive results in recent weeks. But we fancy ourselves at home against anybody.” – Phil Bardsley

Pope kept a much-needed clean sheet against Newcastle on Saturday

The latest home shut-out means that Nick Pope (£4.7m) and his colleagues at the back continue to offer reliable defensive returns against the so-called lesser sides when playing in front of their own fans.

So far this season, six clubs have to Turf Moor who finished outside the top-six in 2018/19. Newcastle’s blank means that Crystal Palace are the only such side to have actually scored in Lancashire; the Magpies, West Ham, Everton, Norwich and Southampton all failing to find the net there.

Whether such a statistic will benefit Pope, James Tarkowski (£5.1m) and Ben Mee (£5.0m) over Christmas and into the New Year remains to be seen though.

Between now and Gameweek 25, the Clarets face Bournemouth, Everton, Chelsea and Manchester United away from home, while Aston Villa, Leicester, Arsenal and Manchester United are the next four to come to Turf Moor.

Burnley have just one clean sheet on the road this season, while last season’s top-six sides have scored a combined 16 goals in four matches at Turf Moor in 2019/20.

Due to a slew of injuries, Bruce had to play Joelinton on the flanks at Burnley

It is also fair to point out that Burnley’s latest clean sheet was helped out by an increasing number of injuries at Newcastle.

The Magpies came to the Lancashire without Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.4m), whose pace has caused problems recent, Miguel Almirón (£5.8m) and Jonjo Shelvey (£5.1m), who has three goals to his name since Gameweek 14.

“Almiron more than Shelvey. Muscle injuries. We’ve just got to be careful. We run the risk, if they’ve got a slight strain or whatever. We can’t have them pulling up and missing six to eight weeks. Let’s see where they are in the week and we’ll go from there.” – Steve Bruce

Without the pace and creativity of those players in midfield, it was hard for Newcastle to create many chances.

Furthermore, with Christian Atsu (£5.4m) the only fit recognised wide-player, Steve Bruce was forced to shift centre-forward Joelinton (£5.6m) onto the right-flank of midfield in his 5-4-1 formation with Andy Carroll (£5.4m) leading the line.

If Newcastle have the same limitations over Christmas, which looks likely given the current status of Saint-Maximin, Almirón and Shelvey, it bodes well for defensive assets of Crystal Palace, Manchester United, Everton and Leicester, who all face Newcastle between now and Gameweek 21.

“Almiron and Shelvey and Saint-Maximin affected it, of course. I never really want to make excuses but of course, that’s why I want a bigger squad. I’ve used the full squad today and they weren’t quite good enough but I thought we didn’t do much wrong.” – Steve Bruce

Bardsley made a quick return from injury for Gameweek 17

By contrast, Burnley were helped by an influx of players returning from injury.

Phil Bardsley (£4.3m) overcame his yellow flag to start at right-back in the place of Matt Lowton (£4.4m).

After three matches out, Ashley Westwood (£5.4m) was back in central midfield alongside Jack Cork (£4.9m) and Ashley Barnes (£6.2m) started next to Chris Wood (£6.2m) up-front in the 4-4-2 system.

“The players coming back did make a difference. I’m not doing the other players down because we have a good and competitive squad this year. We don’t carry big numbers so when you carry a few injuries it does look a bit thin, all of a sudden, but there was a reaction to them coming back and it’s a great three points.” – Sean Dyche

Wood got back on the scoresheet for Burnley, having gone three matches without a goal. However, with those tough fixtures approaching, he may prove less appealing than a number of alternative similarly-priced forwards.

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Pope; Pieters, Mee, Tarkowski, Bardsley; McNeil, Cork, Westwood, Hendrick; Wood (Rodriguez 85′), A Barnes.

Newcastle United XI (5-4-1): Dúbravka; Willems (Gayle 71′), Dummett, Fernández, Schär, Manquillo; Joelinton, Hayden, S Longstaff, Atsu (Muto 80′); Carroll.

Wary of chasing points against Norwich defence - they’ve conceded a similar number to City in the last 6

Liverpool (WOL) and MCI (SHU) are alternatives when Spurs play Norwich but arguably tougher fixtures and their players may have a slighter rotation risk than Kane/Son.

On Grealish, I'm interested but my only route to get him in. But in this team... Would you bother (going forward)?

    Ryan (Button)
    Lundstram Kelly Rico (*TAA, Soy)
    Kdb Alli Son Dendo (*Mane)
    Jimi Vardy Abra

I have an almost identical team to you. What I'm considering is Mané to Richarlison this GW (Grealish in your case) for a hit and then using the funds to upgrade Jimenez (MCI, liv) to Kane (BHA, nor) in GW 19.

Will then sell Kane to an Ings/Pukki/Maupay in the new year to upgrade one of my mids (Rich, Son, Alli) to Mané or Salah in the new year.

      Thoughts?

It could backfire of course but I have a plan to get him/Salah back. I don't think he will grab a huge score against Leicester and if they do win that game then we may see an Everton/Bournemouth style rotation between Salah and Mané for the Wolves and Sheffield United fixtures.

    For a 2 week punt,

    A) Play Aurier & Mount -> Grealish
    Ings -> Abraham, GW19

    B) Matip, Mount -> Rico, Alli (-4)
    Ings -> Pukki, GW19

Leaning towards A, what would you suggest?

It's difficult to pin point any differentials and i dont think Christmas is the time to go for any, they could backfire big time. I'll probably consider Alli > Maddison in a few weeks, and i might potentially swap Mane > Salah

          1. Moderately content penguin
            • 6 Years
            5 years, 11 months ago

If I went differential it would be Rich.

I’m not over convinced by the Spurs double up but see the temptation.

The other differential is Salah over Mane of course - a very decent chunk of his ownership will be dead teams!

i'm not massively convinced on the Spurs double up either, but i feel Alli is worth the punt over Maddison atleast for the next 2 with them Leicester fixtures. It's an easy downgrade to Maddy in the new year, and will save some nice ££

        Hey bud,

Pretty lame return... but still not convinced that chip is worth any more than 15-20 points max, so it's not a complete disaster. Just frustrating, as if you'd offered me an assist for Vardy at halftime vs. Norwich, I'd have taken it hoping for more returns in the second half... and none came!

Looks like Liverpool's double up might be Wolves and West Ham, which isn't great... and the league will probably already be won by the time the next round of doubles come up, so it's going to be a lottery anyway.

And yes, better than Kane 2017 by a massive 2 points lol!

The most overrated chip in the game. It’s always such a risk putting it on an attacking asset in a DGW; remember Sane and any Man City asset for that matter. Vardy was unlucky not to have more mate. Going to give this a listen, thank you for your FPL input

Greenwood should get more gametime and than he would be perfect 8th attacker so depends do you want to play Connolly but from the other hand with great defenders you probably wont need him anyway so better go with cheaper player imo.
Like I said all depends do you gonna play that 8th attacker or you will play your defs if needed anyway.

The problem with Burnley is they rarely score more than two in a game and their goals are pretty evenly shared between Wood and Barnes so it is very easy to fall on the wrong side of a few blanks in a row whne picking one. Of course the converse could be true but I have never had much luck with either.

I just can’t trust Burnley.. Barnes was the one to have early season and then he burned me hard. Wood will do the same I feel

        Yep

There’s defo space for a sub 7.0 attacker. Decent options

        Ings
        Maupay
        Pukki
        Wood

Weighing up whether to have 2 slots or go really big in midfield with Maddison as set and forget 5th mid. Think Madds will continue to provide steadily and offers greater security than the forwards who will blow hit and cold - easy to chase points there

A little screwy to see top 10k ownership of Mane and Salah last week

      85%
      12%

      Getting very tempted now

The time to jump was 2 weeks ago! Still the opportunity is immense to make the switch and a lot of managers will be reluctant to do so due to increased (ties up) value. Salah’s position and stats absolutely trump Mane by a big margin

Judging by my mini leagues yes.

But still think there’s a window there as many seem to be waiting till 25.

Actually thinking of the double up. Mane hasn’t become a bad option

Certainly not a bad option but Salah is simply better. With those fixtures I don’t think it’s worth the double up mate. Look to KDB, Alli, Son, Grealish, Rashford, Vardy, Abraham instead

I’d be losing Rashford (who I distrust and regret) and Grealish to do it in 20 if I go there. I’d end up with this front 8

              Mo Mane KdB Son Maddison
              Vardy Ings Greenwood

Defence would be threadbare template of course but I’d have 1,5 in bank to upgrade Ings if need be and add someone like Dunk to the usual cheap suspects

It’s ok but I would favour my front 8:

                Salah KDB Son Alli Maddison
                Vardy Abraham (Greenwood)

TAA is my fall guy of course

I have a variant where I move Son on for Alli in a few to get triple Pool with a defender.

In principle I’d much prefer double Liverpool attack to double Spurs. Inflated TV makes it a viable option.

Also aiming for Jim (who I’ve just lost) to be my partner for Vardy. Unexciting but ever so reliable

I've swapped Mane to Salah on my wildcard. Feels late because of the Salah hauls, but going forward, no one in my ML owns him, and i feel i'm still jumping on early. fingers crossed it pays off.

I think I am going to waste a FT doing Cantwell to Dendonks to free up a bit more cash. I really can't see how I can make my team better without wither losing a lot of value on Mane or downgrading TAA. Any suggestions?

      Thoughts on this team?

      Gazzaniga Henderson
      TAA Söyüncü Lundstram Aurier Rico
      Mane Son KDB Pulisic Dendoncker
      Vardy Rashford Jiménez

      I have 2 FT 0.0 ITB

Is Gazzaniga Pulisic Jiménez-> Martin Alli Ings worth a -4?

Funny how Mané and Salah hasn't had a single simultaneous double digit haul so far this season. Would be understandable if Liverpool didn't score many goals but they've scored 42 goals. It's one or the other.
