634x258 Scouting The Doubles

Double Gameweeks can be a poisoned chalice, particularly when they involve such an uninspiring team as Bolton. Having spent most of the season battling relegation, Owen Coyle’s outfit have so often been whipping boys and rarely shown the class needed to ensure their survival.

With two double Gameweeks on the horizon, however, the risk of investing in their ranks does lesson considerably. Surely, many Fantasy managers will be asking, some of Owen Coyle’s players can muster a healthy score with (SWA, avl) and (sun, TOT) to play over Gameweeks 35 and 36 respectively?

The Prospects

Clean sheets and goals are at a premium for Bolton. The Trotters have kept just three this season and shipped 65 goals; only Wolves and Blackburn have a poorer defensive record. After scoring seven times in their first three games, Coyle’s side have since notched a further 29 in the following 29 fixtures and have failed to find the net in 14 of their 32 games to date.

Across their upcoming four matches, Bolton’s game against Aston Villa looks the best prospect for a clean sheet, given that the west Midlands club are one of only four teams to have scored fewer goals than Coyle’s side. The Tottenham game seems unlikely to prove lucrative for Bolton’s defenders or attackers, though. Harry Redknapp’s men will be fully focused on a Champions League slot now that their FA Cup run has come to an end and, with 57 goals and 12 clean sheets to their name, have plenty to play for.

Sunderland have a good home record, with eight of their 11 clean sheets achieved at the Stadium of Light. Bolton’s attackers are likely to be disappointed when they roll up to Wearside, but there is hope at least for their defenders; the Black Cats’ attacking swagger seems to have deserted them, with not a single goal in their last three. Complacency was arguably a key factor in Sunderland’s dour 0-0 draw when they hosted Wolverhampton in Gameweek 34.

Swansea are also assured of survival but are showing no let-up in terms of attack. With an on-form Gylfi Sigurdsson leading a midfield charge, Bolton’s prospects of a clean sheet look limited against the Welsh side.

The Likely Lads

It’s easy to be pessimistic here. Not one of Bolton players has mustered an average points per game score above 3.5. Their highest goal scorer remains Ivan Klasnic who, after notching three times in the first three games, has grabbed eight so far this season – the Croatian seems to have fallen out of favour, though, and is now afforded substitute appearances at best. The rest of the front line is similarly unimpressive – Kevin Davies and David N’Gog have mustered a measly five goals between them over the entire campaign.

With such an impotent front line, the midfield offers perhaps the best prospect of points. Chief among these likely lads is the 5.1m priced Martin Petrov, mainly due to his role as Bolton’s penalty taker. He has a total point score of 81 with two goals, six assists and four bonus points to his name. After being dropped from the side mid-season, the Bulgarian looks to have cemented his place in the starting line-up, having being named in the first XI in the last five matches.

Another midfield prospect assured of starts is the 4.8m priced Mark Davies. He has started every game since Gameweek 10, except for the Gameweek 26 away clash with Chelsea through injury. Davies clearly has an eye for goal, scoring three times this season to help him amass a total of 77 points.

Since joining on loan from Arsenal in January, 4.9m priced Ryo Miachi has lit up Bolton’s midfield; his accuracy with crosses and set piece duties have helped him accrue 20 points and provide two assists. Regular starts are far from guaranteed for this skilful midfielder, however, with Bolton boss Owen Coyle aware of his youth and limiting his game time in recent weeks. Miyaichi has managed just 68 minutes of game time over Bolton’s last two games.

Fantasy managers looking at the porous Bolton defence for investment may be forced to rely on attacking points. David Wheater, who is priced at 4.4m, looks the best bet after scoring two goals and accruing two assists since cementing a regular first-team role in light of Gary Cahill’s January departure to Chelsea.

Save points are also likely to attract interest in Bolton’s flame haired goalkeeper Adam Bogdan. With a 4.0m price tag he has started every match and made 50 saves since Gameweek 20.

Cheeky Punts

The selection of Chris Eagles could prove fruitful for risk-taking Fantasy managers. With 90 points to date, he is Bolton’s top Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points scorer after some dazzling displays in the first half of the season. The former Burnley man has notched two double-figure hauls, three goals and seven assists – this 5.1m priced midfielder really ought to be a shoo-in for double Gameweek selection. His game time has been limited in recent weeks, though, meaning starts are far from assured. With a run of four games in the next 15 days, the chance of at least two first-team appearances for Eagles becomes a real possibility. If selected, he has the potential to reward those willing to take a punt.

Kevin Davies is a legend at Bolton since joining in 2003 and scoring 76 goals in his 361 appearances. As he enters his 35th year, however, game time and goal scoring opportunities have become limited. There is every chance, though, that Coyle will be in need of his skipper’s experience as Bolton look to beat the drop in the final few games of the season. At least one start looks assured across the two double gameweeks and, as was shown with his assist during his 21 minutes against Wolves in Gameweek 31, this 5.6m priced forward can damage opposition defences coming on from the bench. It’s also possible Davies may well still be number one for spot-kick duties when on the pitch, furthering his appeal.

I have Bogdan, will likely start him over Mignolet as Sunderland are playing away. Still can't see Bolton keeping clean sheets, hopefully Bogdan makes plenty of saves.

I can't see Miyaichi starting the two games as he barely finishes games as it is. Petrov is arguably a decent punt, but to be honest there is plenty of other midfield options out there. Wheater got a brace in one match, but that's all he scored all season.

In other words, I am sticking with Bogdan mainly because he was a cheap option when I signed him, but won't be signing any other Bolton players

I think I would try to get Bale back. Walcott>Bale and then decide whether to get a city striker for a hit.

At least, that's my current dilemma. Getting Bale for sure (for sess, I think) and then have to see if I want some City coverage.

I 100% want Bale for the DGW - just not sure that with Spurs' form and QPR scrapping for points that he'll do all that much at their ground this w/e. I have 2 freebies this week so can do 2 without taking a hit. I'm tempted to go Sess & Rooney -> Barfa & Tevez (no hits) and then bench Valencia as I fancy Walcott to cause a tired Chelsea a few problems at the Emirates. Now that Nani is back Fergie may* give Valencia a breather before the crucial game at the Etihad the following week.

You like Barfa at stoke over Bale at QPR? Seems simple to me. Yes, QPR are scrappy, but they are very weak at the back.

Barfa is at home. Also Stoke have nothing to play for and are prone to the odd away spanking. To get Bale I'd have to go

Valencia & Rooney -> Bale & Tevez, which I guess is no biggie as I didn't plan to play Valencia again anyway.

So, comes down to who will score more this week - Bale or BAE?

    1. More nailed on imo.

I just think Tevez' greatest skill is his ability to create scoring opportunities all by himself Its the reason City are playing well right now.

Aguero doesn't do that very well, imo.

on Paddy Power, you choose one team to win each weekend. If they lose or draw you're out and you're not allowed select the same team twice. Which is why my options are crap this week.
There's usually around 2000 people in them and the number gets whittled down each week, there's only 70 or 80 people left in this one, winner takes all.

He was gold for the first 5 or so weeks then went stale. So many people kept him for months just because his name was Drogba despite no real form or sign of high scores to come. He stayed on reputation.

Deciding how soon to ditch Drogba defined the first half of the season, players in your team because of reputation and nothing else is dangerous.

Get have a gut feeling RVP is done for the season now. Doesn't make it any easier though.

That's not really a good example considering Drogba's form only lasted for 5 weeks. A better example would be Nani last season, where he was in form for basically 3/4 of the season, but then became rubbish during the last 2 months or so.

can anyone shed some light on the HBA love? i get that he is in form and his partnership between him and cisse is good, but their fixtures are tough as nails.. after this gw, they have an in form wigan away who are fighting for their life, chelsea away who are playing for CL spot, man city who are trying to win the league, and an always difficult away trip to goodison park against everton. i don't know how much more difficult it can get. maybe it's because i'd rather have pienaar in the dgw than HBA, but the fixtures just dont do anything for me. what are your thoughts, because surely everyone must be seeing something that i am clearly missing.

i know. just speculating why people are going for him. plus the fact he's cheap. him and siggy are two great, in form, cheap mf options right now! and hba has a double. think thats why

it must be because of his price/form, and the fact that he has a dgw (even though the fixtures are quite difficult). i think the situation is this: if you have him from before, you should definitely keep him, but if you don't have him currently, i don't think it's worth getting him in with all the other dgw choices out there (and i bet most would be taking a hit to bring him in)

We have everything to play for. Everton have nothing.

Barfa plays higher up the pitch than pienaar, so more of a goal threat (though pienaar's overall form is arguably as good as Barfa's)

Hopefully Wigan will get a result at fulham, so will be almost safe by the time we play them.

      Chelsea will be absolutely knackered

A half fit barfa ripped city apart at the emirates earlier in the season

Everton will have nothing to play for on the last day

Also, most people getting barfa in, will do it this week, for STK, as opposed to mun (pienaar)

      That's about it I think.

What do you guys think is the best option for me this week. I'm trying to catch my rival who is 55 points ahead of me.

    _______________Krul (STO)________________

__Verm (CHE)____ Evans (EVE)____ Richards (wol)__

Bale (qpr)___Valencia (EVE)___HBA (STO)___ Siggy (bol)

    __Rooney (EVE)____RVP (CHE)_____Ade (qpr)

    Subs: Rangel, Surman, Cahill, Begovic

    A) Rooney & Surman > Cisse & Dempsey -4pts

    - I don't mind the hit because I planned on taking one to get an extra DGWer anyway. However it means I have to bench Valencia and my rival already has Dempsey.

    B) Rooney > Cisse

    - Cisse has a slightly easier fixture this week and has a DGW. I would end up benching Surman which is much better than benching Valencia and it means I have more of a differential over my rival who doesn't have Cisse

    C) Valencia > Dempsey

    - Means I keep Rooney who could go big in the next two fixtures perhaps although I'm not overly confident. Dempsey is not a differential however whereas Valencia is.

    D) Save a transfer.

    - I have a solid team for this week so I don't really need to use a transfer

    E) Something else?

    - City striker perhaps but I'd rather go for DGWers

Would love to get some help here guys, I desperately need to beat my brother in law, he is Scottish and will never let me live it down if he beats me. I CAN'T LOSE!!

I think with a 55 point defecit to make up you need to only bring in differentials from now on. There's only 4 weeks left so you need to make up 14 points every week. Therefore, whilst no Dempsey is a risk, I would say go B).

Mini Leagues aside, I would probably say go C)

No probs. You need to take gambles to have a chance of making up that ground so I think you'll have to run the risk of no Dempsey. One thing in your favour is WIG are bang on form right now.

Yeah, I did actually gain 30pts on him in the last GW so its big score differences like that which make a big difference. 55pts isn't that much when you captain the right player and have the right team.

Not a bad option especially if I chose to only go for 2 more DGWers. I was always planning on taking a hit during this period anyway. A Tevez captaincy punt could prove a high reward as my rival seems to captain RVP every week.

        Fair call China. Its basically

        Cisse, DGW defender, Rooney

        or

        Cisse, DGW defender, Tevez(c) -4pts

I think I have ruled out getting Dempsey because my rival has him and also Wigan are in form and Dempsey generally does nothing away especially once Pog returns and is no longer up front for the DGW.

      "He is Scottish." Quality.

Possibly option A. Cisse is a no-brainer. You have to decide if Rooney's form is going to continue or if RVP is losing is mojo.

Dempsey, again, is another good buy.

Option A was my original plan however it would mean I bench Valencia at the cost of -4pts in order to get Dempsey. Plus my rival has Dempsey and they are against and in form Wigan AND he generally does bad away from home AAANNNDDD Pog might return up front soon.

Despite all that though Dempsey still terrifies me, I should never have sold him. Interestingly my rival captains RVP every week so already I'm losing out by having RVP because I can't afford to captain him because I need differentials. Wouldn't be a bad option to get rid I suppose. Or would it?

191 points and rising. I have a sneaky feeling we won't see the same WIG show up at FUL. I'd still back Dempsey to do something.

RVP or Rooney is a tough one. Rooney prob my choice due to the fixtures.

Way back I originally sold Dempsey what was to be 'for good' because of fixtures. Is this still a valid plan especially considering my rival has him? Not getting him will give me the chance to perhaps get in a different midfielder such as Mata or VDV instead for GW36.

Really? I had myself as just about favourite. My current DGW team (with no hits) would be:

        Howard (FUL, stk)
Santon (wig, che), Turner (BOL), Caulker (BOL), Kompany (MUN)
Bale (BLA, bol), Barfa (wig, che), Sess (BOL), Siggy (WOL)
        Dave (wig, che), Tevez (MUN)

That's only 5 DGW. But I would take at least one hit for Kompany - Baines (if fit)

All of the single week players have prime fixtures.

Do you think that a wild card team can gain 20-40 points on that?

Didn't Roonpigger just score two goals??? Amazing what Citeh's goals does to everyone.

Haha that last paragraph sums up my feelings completely.

I'm sure that one of Rooney and RVP will do well while the other won't, just can't work out for the life of me which one is which.

Easy. Sess since O'Niell's team not interested to score goals anymore.

Strike 3 for Sess! He's out! Cheers guys!

Yep, I'm sticking with Rooney this week at least. He may be playing badly but he's still scoring the points and that's what counts, I suppose. RVP looks jaded and increasingly fractious though and may be nearer the door than Piggery....

Bring in barfa for sess this week, even though it'll mean -8 next week
Or sit tight and just take a -4 for the DGW? (to get huth, vdv, mata in for caulker, valencia and moses for dgw36)

It's getting interesting. Ow isn't it?!?!
    Thanks in advance

If your minileague leader captains RVP every week and you need to captain someone else for the differential is it therefore a waste of time having RVP in your team at all?

yes because if you don't have rvp they get double rvp points on you not just single points

precisely what i was saying. rvp gets 20pt haul. if you have him they only get 20pts on you. you don't have him then they'd get 40 on you!

Follow him to captain RVP. Look differential on OTHER player. You can have another 10 player that perform better than his 10 player.

RVP is a season player and he can score week in week out.

True. So far I've taken educated guesses at captaincy. Sometimes captaining RVP sometimes captaining a differential. It has worked well in recent weeks.

    Hey all!

I have only .1 cash and 1 ft, so the challenge is...

    Moses Valencia Sess Walcott Siggy
    Aguerro RVP Ade

    Do I a)... Walcott > Demps
    b)... RVP > Cisse Valencia >Demps (for a hit).
c)... no tr this week but do multiple hits next week?

Or am I missing a better option?

Also what is your opinion on the Dempsey Vs Bale/VDV option?

      Forget VDV. No game time.

You've got most bases covered this gwk. Save your powder for next time.

rooney to ade or walcott to hba? first one would happen next week, second would happen this week and either would proabably be til the end of the season

I wouldn't do Walcott to HBA, esp not for the season. I think Walcott (and RVP) will tear into Chelsea to make up for the latest loss. Not a fan of Newcastle fixtures... very tough.

Who do people think will score more this week?

    a) Bale (qpr)
    b) Barfa (STO)
    c) Valencia (EVE)
    d) Sess (avl)

I currently have c) and d) and will most likely bring in a) and b) over the next 2 GWs. Question is, timing. Which this week, or save the freebie and do both next week?

Hey lads I am not so sure about dumping Rooney > Teves/Aguero this week is such a good idea. He admittedly has played poor and vows to change his game.

Id rather do Rooney>Ade in 36 for the DGW.

Doing Rooney>Teves/Aguero in 35 means that you will lose a valuable transfer in 36.

    Think of it this way

    #1. GW 35Rooney (EVE) , GW36 Ade (BLA/bol)

    vs

    #2 GW 35 Tevez/Aguero (wol), 36 (MUN)

Honestly, I give the edge to #1 above.

      Evening Canadian,

I was originally doing Rooney->Ade, but spurs are so shite right now, i can see 'Arry giving Saha or defoe a start one of the games.

I think #2 can outscore #1 tbh, Tevez could go ballistic vs wolves, and everton are usually tight at the back and don't concede much.

For me its form>Fixtures, so i got Tevez over Ade regardless of games. Bale will be my spurs cover.

so my original plan for the dgw was to go rooney -> ade + sess -> pienaar + kelly -> baines all for -8. but now with city being in such form and playing a wolves that may not even have their #1 keeper AND the fact baines is a doubt, i'm thinking aguero -> rooney for -4 hit this week, then for the dgw (have to take -12 hit!!!, but sess -> pienaar + kelly -> baines + vorm -> bogdan. do you think this is worth the 12 hit, or just stick with my original plan with the -8 hit?
