The captaincy debate for Gameweek 22 may not be as simple as Fantasy Premier League managers are hoping.

Heading into the first round of action since the FA Cup third round, we now embark on the second half of the current campaign.

Every season, the January transfer window proves a major landmark for change and shifting templates.

For example, Southampton spent much of 2019/20 as whipping boys but they come into Gameweek 22 much improved at the back – perhaps the biggest issue with this week’s captaincy conundrum.

To help guide you to the right skipper for your team we will analyse the recent statistical form of each candidate and compare them with the defensive performances of their upcoming opponents.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those signed up either as a season-long, monthly or discounted Member will be able to access it in full.

Captain Poll

Despite missing the last two Gameweeks, Jamie Vardy (£10.0m) has returned to the Captain Poll’s summit once again.

Just shy of 39% of you had voted for the Leicester City forward ahead of Southampton’s trip to the King Power Stadium.

The last time the two sides met saw Vardy bag a hat-trick and an assist in a 9-0 win and it appears that a large number of Fantasy managers are hoping for something similar.

It may feel like a while since Vardy truly rocked the Fantasy world but if we forget his last two absences, influenced by paternal duties and a subsequent injury, he is still a reliable option. Between Gameweeks 9 and 19 he started every match and blanked only once.

However, the chances of another 9-0 drubbing for Southampton do look unlikely. Their defence has improved of late, resulting in two clean sheets in their last four, one at Chelsea and the other at home against Spurs.

A long way off in the poll’s second place is Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne (£10.6m) who faces Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.

Despite a spirited EFL Cup semi-final first-leg performance against Leicester on Wednesday night, Dean Smith’s defence has been in recent Premier League displays.

In their last four outings, they have conceded three times on two occasions, while across their last three at home, Villa have let in an average of 2.3 per game.

De Bruyne himself has attacking returns in four of his last five, two of them double-digit returns.

It appears that the Belgian remains the most trustworthy asset in Manchester City ranks considering the rotation and patchy nature of some of his colleagues.

Sergio Aguero (£11.7m), with just one start and one goal since Gameweek 14 is the next most-popular among Pep Guardiola’s charges, backed by just 3.5% in the poll.

Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling (£11.8m), with two double-digit hauls but four blanks in his last seven, has the support of just 2.9%.

Marcus Rashford (£9.2m) looks set for third place in the vote, backed by 9.1% ahead of Manchester United’s meeting with Norwich City.

The Canaries have kept just one clean sheet since Gameweek 10 although have largely fared better on their travels than at home.

Each of their last three at Carrow Road has seen Norwich concede twice, but they have let in just one goal in each of their last three on the road.

Rashford is in good form at Old Trafford though, blanking there just once since Gameweek 4.

John Lundstram (£5.1m) has been considered an outside captain option by many this season but Gameweek 22 sees him get more support than usual.

5.1% of the voters are backing the Sheffield United man ahead of a meeting with West Ham.

The Hammers may have scored four times against a hapless Bournemouth last time out but it’s still early days in David Moyes’ second spell as manager.

Meanwhile, only Leicester (eight) have kept more clean sheets than Sheffield United (seven) this season.

Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) is the most fashionable captain option at Liverpool as they prepare to face Spurs, although the Egyptian is backed only by 3.9%.

Jose Mourinho has struggled to turn around the defensive fortunes in north London, conceding in all but one of his matches since taking charge – which could open the door for Salah and his colleague Sadio Mané (£12.3m).

The latter has accrued just 2.7% of the votes but has outscored Salah over the last three matches by 8.3 points per game to 5.3.

Tammy Abraham (£7.8m), Raúl Jiménez (£7.5m), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.8m), Anthony Martial (£7.9m), Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.9m) and Richarlison (£8.0m) are the only other options backed by more than 1%.

I'm captaining Salah. Mo will probably try and park the bus but not sure Spuds are up to doing it.

KDB is a good option but there is still the risk of him playing deeper as he did again against Everton when he blanked.

Vardy is probably the best option really but I'm punting on Mo I think.

Surely it's not worth having both Mane and Salah, when you can only captain one? Son + Robbo over Mane/Salah + Rico sounds easy.

Can't make up my mind really. Feels like there is no chance there is any value in both, but at the same time, its so scary not having both.

I think I am leaning towards going for Robertson over Mané and making my captaincy decision easier each week with Salah perma cap.

I think its the consistency of returns which is most attractive about Salah/Mane at least one always hauls so even if you cap the wrong one you still get abit of coverage. Son is tempting tho for sure

if you own both then a haul from the one you don´t captain is not that hurting if you own vs not owning. And i´m playing this for fun and it much more fun to own Salah and Mané for a double that have 6 days between the games than hoping for cs, and i think it is the same for double defense, you might hit one big, but not that sure you´ll get two big hauls from both defenders.

If only KDB was permanently played in his more advanced role, would be a shoo in for captaincy almost every week.

City tend to demolish most teams when he's playing that way so it makes you wonder why Pep plays him in the central role.

never has a truer word been "spuck". I can't understand Pep's reluctance to do this ..... but maybe none of the other forwards have that dual capability to play both CDM & CAM roles

      1. Brosstan
        • 11 Years
        6 years, 1 month ago

I think the main problem is that Pep has so many players that can play the attacking positions that need minutes... so when the likes of Foden and D.Silva get minutes theres simply not enough attacking slots for KDB in an advanced role unless Pep starts benching someone like Sterling more frequently (personally I think he should do this but I can see why he doesnt). While in the more deeper midfield roles theres really only Rodri and Gundogan right now With Fernandinho in midfield.

it´s obvious though, he has no cb he relies on when Laporte is gone and playing sometimes with a back 3 and/or KDB is a very secure way of playing. would be surprised if they payed that vs Villa

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Partially true I think, but he can still play that way with KDB further forward (one of the wings in a front 3 or the more attacking mid of the 3). Gundogan, Bilva and Rodri can all play further back. He didn't play KDB against United though in last game, a team who had already recently punished our poor defence. So think you're off to say it's obvious.

The above give a bit more credence to my theory about mini rests, though it is just a theory I'll add!

the obvious were related to the cb situation and the tactical changes that forces and KDB stationed in a deep role in those systems, the latter part is not obvious but the first one, the premise (having no cb to count on) is. And if he needs three at the back that means Fernandinho and Rodri there. i would think he won´t use that system vs Villa.

his position vs SHU home was also very deep, but still got 14 pointer, due to his brutally long run which he received the ball from Mahrez, so were a bit more adventurous against SHU than vs Everton at home, where he just stayed deep without those long bursting runs.

Okay I see, yes that bit is obvious. I think it was more forced when Rodri was injured as there were less options then, but this coincided with us really missing KDB further up the pitch too.

Back 3 doesn't have to have Rodri as well, it's just an option or backup when multiple CBs injured. Ota and Stones (urgh to both) are both fit now and Garcia has looked good, he even played Zinc there in a 3 in the 1st half of FA cup game against Port Vale the other day.

I don't agree that KDB was in a defensive role against SHU, Rodri covered that with help from Bilva and a bit from KDB. Granted he wasn't in the free role where he is super dangerous (floating number 10 or free roam wing where he was against Arsenal) but he certainly wasn't as deep as against Everton. The SHU game opened up a lot in 2nd half after early goal. KDB seemed to push up a bit and take control with Mahrez.

As a DM he is good FPL asset, as a CM he is a great FPL asset and possible captain, as an AM he is an amazing FPL asset and a perfect captain. The problem is a the moment City's positions are just so fluid and interchangeable, it's very hard to predict. The only one who seems to have a locked role is Dilva as is always central and always AM. I think he is likely to play this week after a rest. Does that mean KDB gets pushed further back, I dunno!

      Completely agree.

My theory is that Pep give him mini rests in that role. I was worried he might be rested against Everton as despite playing great, he looked visibly knackered near the end of the previous 3 games as an AM. Instead he was played as DM and influenced the game but didn't have to exert himself with less pressing and no lung busting runs. He can still return from there but pretty much all his blanks have been in this position and definitely not captain material.

It's the only thing putting me off him as captain this week.

Granted it’s a fairly small pool of assets being shared, but I rarely see the exact same. XIs.

Very similar at least. It’s why captaining is killing people. You do something different to gain which can be a massive positive or negative depending which way it went. I think this is what FPL want. Keeps casuals interested and more seasoned players more focussed on beating them.

Original plan was to roll FT to get Mane next GW but now tempted to do Moura to Mahrez?

    Pope
    TAA Lundstarm Gomez
    Salah KDB Martial Moura
    Jiminez Vardy Rashford

    Button Kelly Simpson Guendouzi

Not sure about Gomez. I’d say he loses his place before the double.

if he stays injury free he will. Klopp sticks with the one beside VVD if he delivers and he does. Matip usually takes a while before he gets up to his best, wil lget a game in fa cup, then some minutes here and there. Then it might change because Pool could have sewn up the title and CL could become a goal, that could potentially give matip minutes in PL. Saying that, the fact he stays behind when Pool have set pieces diminishes his points potential a lot, so i might change this, i might go VVD. Chances are high that TAA gets an assist or two in that double,he needs to assist someone and having VVD is one that could be the goal for that assist. Not sure but of all TAA assists, most goals are from that trio Mané/salah/vdd?

It’s not a risk I’d be willing to take for the sake of 2 potential clean sheets when other options could seriously haul.

For me it has to be 3 of Mane TAA Salah Robbo.

      Same.

I own both Salah and Mane, but the Aurier v Mane duel looks an enticing one.

It's possible Jose picks a back 3 though, as many teams are doing against Liverpool these days. So it may be a risk.

The casuals who are captaining Vardy obviously have the reverse leg 0-9 in mind.

They are definitely not considering that Soton are no pushovers of late. In fact soton have conceded only 1 goal or fewer in 7 of the last 8 pl games. (conceded only 6 goals in total in that period)

They are the most inform team after liverpool at the moment and will keep it very tight imo. Ndidi and possible Maddison injury wont help either.

It honestly depends on whether or not you want to take the risk.
Vardy has been extremely consistent this season, there is definitely merit in giving him the armband this week.
That being said, it is the boring pick.

easy to get blinded by that no matter who you are, but ye, cap choice this week is simple and easy. Leicester missing Ndidi will have an impact in both ends of the pitch.

Would go Vardy of these, very high ownership, more consistent, on pens, and feels like having a higher ceiling than DCL. Would punt on someone else if going for a differential

    2. Zladan
      • 8 Years

DCL is a good enough differential.

Vardy haul and DCL blank would hurt you badly.

I’d say the downside outweighs the upside.

    Henderson
    TAA - Lundy - Soy
    Salah - Mane - KDB - Grealish
    Vardy - Jimenez - Maupay

    (4.0 - Cantwell - Dunk - Rico)
    0 Ft & 0.1m

Pope & Aurier to Henderson & Dunk done.
Long term investments with good fixtures up till GW30.
FH31 and Wildcard after that so wont have to worry about them again hopefully.
