Spurs still lacking attacking edge despite win over Norwich

Spurs 2-1 Norwich

  • Goals: Dele Alli (£8.5m), Son Heung-min (£9.9m) | Teemu Pukki (£6.5m)
  • Assists: Serge Aurier (£5.0m), Alli | Max Aarons (£4.3m)
  • Bonus Points: Alli x3, Pukki x2, Aurier x1

Norwich City’s defence continues to help boost the Fantasy Premier League prospects of their opponents this season.

Spurs came into Double Gameweek 24 with just one win in their previous six league matches but emerged 2-1 victors while forgotten about assets such as Son Heung-min (£9.9m) and Dele Alli (£8.5m) delivered for their remaining owners.

Ironically, neither player had a particularly impressive game, and Norwich actually held Spurs at bay for much of the evening, but, with key centre-back Ben Godfrey (£4.4m) suspended, the points came nonetheless, as they usually do against the Canaries.

Daniel Farke’s men continue to be the most scored-on team this season (47 goals conceded), which bodes well for Newcastle, Liverpool, Wolves and Leicester assets as they face them in the next four Gameweeks.

Furthermore, the longer Norwich stay rooted to the foot of the Premier League table, the more they may have to push forward in their remaining matches, thus exposing their already soft centre.

“We know it will be a big sensation – maybe a miracle – that we stay in this league.” – Daniel Farke

Whether this result should put Spurs players back on the FPL radar does remain to be seen. After all, no other team has conceded as often as their most recent opponents, and it’s Manchester City up next for Jose Mourinho’s men and a trip to Chelsea in Gameweek 27.

As already mentioned, Spurs were not exactly at their best on Wednesday night. Alli started the game slowly but managed to get in the right place at the right time for his goal, and it was a deflection that saw his second-half shot find the head of Son, practically on the line. They were Alli’s first attacking returns since the Gameweek 19 win over Brighton.

Playing on the left side of an attacking midfield trio, Son spurned some decent chances in the first half and, according to the local press, is still some way off his usual “vintage self”. As already mentioned, his second-half had an element of fortune about it, the ball deflected onto his head inside the six-yard box.

Meanwhile, Moura also received some criticism from the local press in his role as a centre-forward. While he contributed plenty of runs to the team, the Brazilian did not offer much more.

Spurs are clearly missing the injured Harry Kane (£10.8m) with neither Moura or Son in a position to occupy the vacant centre-forward position with much gusto right now.

However, the hope for Spurs’ attacking potential may lie in the performances of Giovani Lo Celso (£7.3m), who continues to improve with each outing.

The Argentinian was Spurs’ best player by some considerable margin against Norwich, the creative hub in midfield and also winning the ball back on plenty of occasions.

While Lo Celso did not contribute any attacking returns on Wednesday evening, it was he who played the ball into Alli so he may start contributing FPL points soon.

“Giovani is improving game-after-game. Today he was fantastic in everything. I think he is adapting very well to the league, he can play in various positions, he gives us lots of quality, vision, passing, he is improving his offensive game, he is improving his intensity. The only thing that worries me is the new life of English football of playing and playing and playing and in this case he is now playing all the time now because we don’t have different solutions. Even today when Lamela was out, no wingers so Giovani to the wing. It’s hard but I think it’s good experience for all of us, a good experience for the family.” – Jose Mourinho

Another decent performer on Wednesday was right-back Serge Aurier (£5.0m) as he put in an assured defensive performance to keep Todd Cantwell (£5.0m) at bay and played an excellent cross in for Alli’s goal.

Meanwhile, Ryan Sessegnon (£5.4m) struggled on the other side of defence as Spurs’ left-back issues continue. The former Fulham man was pegged back by the exploits of Max Aarons (£4.3m), negating the threat on that side of the field. Sessegnon eventually brought down Norwich’s marauding right-back to give away a penalty in the second half.

Pukki celebrates a goal for Norwich

Teemu Pukki (£6.5m) slotted the spot-kick away cooly in the 70th minute to ensure Spurs’ defensive problems continue under Mourinho. Since the former Manchester United boss arrived in north London, they have conceded 1.3 goals per game while only Bournemouth, Brighton and Wolves have recorded fewer than their total of two clean sheets in that time.

With that in mind, interest in recently added budget defender Japhet Tanganga (£4.0m) may subside somewhat. The 20-year-old started both Gameweeks 22 and 23 and was also the man of the match in the FA Cup third-round replay win over Middlesbrough.

However, he was only an unused substitute against Norwich, Toby Alderweireld (£5.3m) paired with Jan Vertonghen (£5.2m) at centre-back, although the latter appears still a bit rusty.

Another budget asset that has probably been knocked firmly off then radar is goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga (£4.6m) after a surprise early return for Hugo Lloris (£5.3m).

The Frenchman was originally expected back at some point in February after fracturing his elbow in Gameweek 8 but played 90 minutes against Norwich.

Admittedly, he didn’t have a great deal to do, managing to get a palm to Pukki’s penalty in the second half.

While Gazzaniga looks to be an inactive player from here on in, it was a cause of some joy for select Fantasy managers with Dean Henderson (£5.0m) and Nick Pope (£4.6m) to emerge from some people’s benches with 11-point and 10-point hauls respectively.

“The return of Hugo is mixed emotions for me. It’s happiness to see one of the best goalkeepers in the world to be back. It’s a very good feeling for us but at the same time it is one of these decisions that sometimes we must have it, but it hurts. To leave Paulo out hurts. The good thing is that he is such a good member of the family and he is such a special friend of Hugo that I think he also shared our happiness to have Hugo back as a friend. For me, he gave me a lot of thinking and I had to try to be cold to make a decision without emotions because to leave Paolo out is not easy.” – Jose Mourinho

Finally, Harry Winks (£5.2m) was taken off injured in the 55th minute with an ankle problem but Mourinho was unable to provide any update in his post-match press conference.

“I prefer not to know before I come in here so I come with a normal face. I don’t want to come in here with a very upset face, so I’m even afraid to ask, but when I leave here I have to ask.” – Jose Mourinho

Tottenham Hotspur XI (4-2-3-1): Lloris; Sessegnon, Vertonghen (Fernandes 75′), Alderweireld, Aurier; Winks (Dier 56′), Lo Celso; Son, Alli, Lamela (Eriksen 62′); Moura.

Norwich City XI (4-2-3-1): Krul; Byram, Hanley, Zimmermann, Aarons; McLean (Stiepermann 90+3′), Tettey (O Hernández 82′); Cantwell, Duda, Rupp (Drmic 86′); Pukki.

Am I mad to be considering Wildcarding?

    Pope, Button
    TAA, Lundstram, Soyuncu, Kelly, Rico
    Salah, Mane, KDB, Martial, Dendoncker
    Vardy, DCL, Maupay

Wouldn't mind getting rid of Lund, Soy, Kelly, Rico, Martial, Dendo and Vardy.

I wouldn't, I'm in same boat with defence but I feel like it's just swapping out rubbish for different rubbish, not worth a WC before we even know properly about blanks and doubles.

Been tinkering and came up with the below non-template squad if I were to WC.

    Hendo
    TAA VVD Baldock Stevens
    Salah Son KDB
    Kun Ings DCL

    McCarthy Cantwell Hayden Williams

Good enough to hit the WC button to cover up ground?

Not sure if i’d describe it as non-template, not that that’s necessarily a bad thing.

Unlikely to have a good double for cheap options and since he is WCing, planning for BB separately will be a pain, especially if TC is still pending.

good moves, i would have kept abe. Jiminez will play norwich soon though so that will be tasty. Abe -> jiminez is arguably sideways.

Perez looks to have taken a bit of the attacking work off maddison, so thats good.

I had the same frontline but have since shipped Vardy, purely because of his 6gw blanks, for me that one assist was lucky and in those 6 gws other options have opened up, of course the "I have alot of cash invested in Vardy " thoughts crept through my mind , but, I got him at 9.0 and am satisfied wiv the 0.5 I have made of him in Selling value.

My midfield is also the same barring Martial, I have KDB and I'm quite satisfied wiv having that security of being able to rotate from a 3-4-3 to 3-5-2 without much concern

Kun is temptation personified atm but the fear of putting the Cap on him only to get shafted by pep roulette or having a late sub appearance and the ripple effect of that should he further not score/assist is making me keep clear of him...for now at least.

My thinking is Pep will want to finish the season with a respectable points gap between them and Pool and of course secure 2nd spot whilst prioritizing the UCL. I have nothing other than my gut feel to support my thoughts but ultimately I'd say do what you know you feel comfortable doing without least concern over rotation and your team selection

Just wilcarded yesterday as I couldn't take anymore injuries. Who should I include in my WC team?
Currently own and have tied value in: KDB, Mane, Grealish, Lund

Otherwise I am very open for suggestions - questions on my mind atm.
    - Is Aguero a must (got him before latest rise for safety)?
    - How many Liverpool players for the upcoming run?
    - Best 4th and 5th midfielder options?
    - Ings still a good pick?

You need 3 pool. Aguero a very strong but not essential pick. Yes get ings. 4/5th mids: Grealish and Fleck, with alternatives in Mooy/Traore and despite dubious fixtures - there's always Cantwell.

      - Not a must but could be gold (hat tricks and braces galore) but could equally go on his usual run of 6 pointers (goal and subbed before 65 mins for no bonus) Pep will want to focus on champions league and cup games now with Liverpool being so far ahead in the league, so Aguero will get rested a lot in the league in my opinion.
      - 3 - they are just too good right now. I have Salah/Mane/TAA but will actually look to change that to Salah/TAA/VVD
      - Cantwell, Traore, Fleck, Mooy all good options. I like Cantwell myself.
      - You defo want Ings for Souhtmaptons run of fixtures

In your WC you can wither play safe and go for 'template' or take some risks and try and boost your rank but accept it could also send you tumbling down. I'd always try and include a few differentials in a WC otherwise theres no point.

I'd keep KDB and Lund, Mane could be replaced by Salah (you'll want one for sure) and Grealish's fixtures toughen up soon so re-assess then?

Differentials i'd be looking at > Aubemeyang top of the list as long as he doesn't go to Barca, if he does maybe Lacazette. Son, Aguero, Perez if Vardy is out for a while?

I'd make sure you have at least one Liverpool, Sheffield and Souhtampton defender in yout WC as they have great fixtures and are defensively putting out good stats. I think Newcastle also rotate well with them?

      McCarthy
      TAA, Robbo, Lundstrum, Stephens, Newcastle
      Salah, KDB, Son, Fleck, Cantwell
      Aubemeyang, Ings, DCL

Just throwing that out there with my team value it leaves 0.1 itb. Maybe look at Aguero instead. DCL will need to move on soon (I'd like to bring back Jiminez)

      Hope this helps!

Nice comments there. How would you fund Kun? As I'm. Guessing you're want to keep Aub. I have both. What do you think of WC team?

        Allison/
        Rico/ TAA/ Lascelles/
        Mane (c)/ KDB/ Martial/ Noble/
        DCL/ Kune/ Aub/
        Subs McCarthy/ Rico/ Lund/ Cantwell/

I don't like Allison - 6mill for keeper when VVD is 6.5 and much more potential for points. Get McCarthy or Henderson and then upgrade 4.5 defender to VVD.
I think having Kun, Aub, Mane and KDB is too much money tied up in premiums. I'd choose 3 of them and roll with it. Id also want Ings for their run of fixtures. I do think you've got a good team considering you have 4 big hitters though so fair play.
Noble won't get penalties every week, I'd choose Fleck/Mooy over him maybe?

Awesome feedback mate, thank you! I like your thinking and suggestions. Ings is a good pick, for sure, however I'm not sure how I feel about double Southampton defense.

I usually get burned by Son - but as he is so direct in his game, I guess he's a good pick.

My current draft looks like this:

        Dubravka (Button)
Robbo - VVD - Lund - Baldock (brought in at 4.5) - Williams (Utd one)
        Mane - KDB - Grealish - Fleck - Mooy
        Aguero - Ings - Jimenez

2.0m itb to upgrade Grealish if he goes cold or a better option comes up.

Anyhow, thanks for a great answer!!

No worries buddy. Just remember whatever happens - you'll always be disappointed on your wild card haha. Expect your pre-wildcard team to score more points next week but over the weeks it should balance itself out. Sometimes I like to go completely outside of the box on wildcards as often this weeks 'template' will score low next week. Just got to keep faith in the consistent performers. Always follow your gut and remember that FPL is a game you play against yourself.

I'd also recommend looking at ownership. To be smart you'll want to have some highly owned players and then punt on some low owned players.

On my next WC i'm looking to have

          High Ownership = HO
          Low Ownership = LO

          HO, HO, LO
          HO, HO, HO, LO
          HO, HO, LO

Maybe have 2 or 3 players who can really boost your rankings, whilst having the rest of your team as players who secure your rank. Just a though, again this is all just game thinking.

          Dubravka (Button)
Robbo - VVD - Lund - Baldock (brought in at 4.5) - Williams (Utd one)
          Mane - KDB - Grealish - Fleck - Mooy
          Aguero - Ings - Jimenez

I think this looks nice, I'd want a Southampton defender maybe but the rest is great, I like your front line.

Double Man City is defo a 'risk' as rotation could kick in, but right now it's a good call, just make sure you have a playing bench. Maybe look at changing one of your front 7 to a complete wildcard pick if you fancy it.

          Good luck!

      I've just Wildcarded:

      - Is Aguero a must (got him before latest rise for safety)? I think so
      - How many Liverpool players for the upcoming run? 3 - Mane, TAA & Firmino
      - Best 4th and 5th midfielder options? I kept Cantwell & bought Fleck, they can move between 4th & 5th.
      - Ings still a good pick? I got him back in.

Only players I kept were Mane, TAA, KDB, Kelly & Lundstram

On a WC and looking for differentials. Which combo do you prefer?

      A)
Grealish + Deeny/Deulofeu (currently have this one as I got Grealish for 5,9)

      B)
Sarr + Wood (way less ownership)

Looks like my team is heading in this direction for gw26 - happens if I swap out Dunk, Son, Martial and Fimino

      Hendo, McCarthy
      TAA, Lunds, Robbo, Williams, Lascelles
      Salah, KDB, Fleck, Cantwell, 7.7M
      Aguero, Auba, Ings

Would you WC this from GW 26. Not next GW. In 2 GWs...

      McCarthy-Button
      TAA-Tomori-Lund-Kelly-Soy
      Salah-Son-Grealish-Maddison-Nakamba
      Firmino-Auba-Wilson

I dont have City assets and City plays vs WHU in GW 26 at home.

I can do Wilson and Maddison to Ings and Dilva but i would love to have Aguero/Mahrez.

      Thoughts?

      Thx in advance. Cheers.
