Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captain options for Double Gameweek 29?

The transformation of Gameweek 29 into a Double Gameweek has added further complication to the latest captaincy debate.

With the focus previously on Liverpool, Fantasy Premier League managers have been forced to consider Arsenal and Manchester City options for the armband with each side playing twice.

We’ve got over the individual statistics for key candidates in recent weeks and compared them against the defences of their upcoming opponents to find the out who the best option is.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those signed up for the 2019/20 season or a monthly package can access it in full.

Captain Poll

The original Gameweek 29 captain poll

We effectively ran two captain polls ahead of Gameweek 29 as the Double prefix was not added until late on Tuesday night.

As you can see from the table above, it was Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) who took a comfortable lead when this was a simple single Gameweek, having delivered in each of his last four home matches in a row.

Sadio Mané (£12.4m) was also up there in third place with Bournemouth coming to Anfield, Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.8m) completing the Liverpool contingent in the top-five, which was rounded off by Jamie Vardy (£9.8m).

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang‘s (£11.0m) fixture against West Ham was good enough for him to accrue 25.6% and claim second place, with three goals in his last two at home.

The new Double Gameweek 29 poll

However, the addition of Arsenal and Manchester City’s midweek meeting at the Etihad Stadium has proved enough to completely change the dynamic of the Double Gameweek 29 captaincy debate.

As you can see, Aubameyang has now stolen top spot, increasing his share by 24.2 percentage points now that he will be playing twice.

There was a similar boost for Kevin De Bruyne (£10.7m) as he rose from 1.8% backing to 20.1% and second place – although the Belgian is now an injury doubt.

Those shifts saw Salah drop to third place with a still-respectable 11.9% backing for the armband, while Alexander-Arnold remained stable in fourth place.

Meanwhile, Mané and Vardy dropped out as differential options with Sergio Aguero (£11.9m) and Nicolas Pépé (£9.2m) taking their place but with no more than 3% support each.

Evening all. So, if you were in my position at the top, what's your plans this week? Interested to get an idea on the community thoughts.

Is Auba worth a -4 to captain over Salah... Question of the week.

Hahaha. Getting him in somehow. To be honest, I'm feeling like another punt cos last weeks Mane and Pukki didn't work out.

Raheem is that punt. Not had him at all this season and imagine getting him in for the double and he does well. Would cost me Salah and Pukki/Ings to get Sterling and Aubameyang tho.

        I'm tempted...

Getting the Liverpool team news might help there.

Agree with Sterling, he’s the monster differential this GW, would have on a FH or WC.

Like the Sterling punt but not worth removing Salah imo, if we're talking KDB out instead then could be onto a winner

Personally can't see how selling Salah ahead of Bournemouth at home could pay off. I'd probably look at Grealish to Pepe/Mahrez as a punt. But then again I'm no where near #1 so what do I know.

Can’t even imagine being in your position! Unbelievable!

Because of your team structure you can’t make an easy move for Auba for this week. Given you have all your chips left, what are you favouring chip Strategy-wise?

      1. Queens of the South Age
        • 6 Years

Still dunno about the chips. If spurs has have won last night I'd have had an extra 4 players for GW31 and would have been happy. Might free hit for 31, then wildcard and worry about the rest as it comes.

I’ve only got 4 atm for GW31 but I’m still reluctant to have to use FH then. Just don’t see much value when there’s only 4 fixtures and many of the players/ teams are crud. Much prefer it for 34 when it’s a weird mixture of blanks and doubles.

To me looks like you could get a decent team out without using the chip yet.

Goodness me - we are not worthy! Your team is certainly not template so I suppose it depends on whther you want to remain so. You have 6 GW31 players and 3 transfers would give you 9 starters, so that should be enough. I cannot think of anything better than bring in Wolves strikers, one this week and one next? I wouldn't get Auba - you'd need a hit.

Haha. Just made some transfers at the right times and got lucky. That's all. 🙂

You make an excellent point but the thing is, nothing excites me about getting in Jiminez or Jota in.

You have to be free hitting in 31 right.

I wouldn't risk that on a free hit you are meant to he playing an optimal 11 🙂

Luiz imo is probably better. 2 chances for him to do something wild and arsenal have been better defensively recently so they could keep a clean sheet against West ham.

I'd be attracted to the risk for a 1 week only approach though is all, when arsenal do occasionally keep clean sheets he's normally around the bonus points I think?

    A bad team
    B average team
    C template team
    D good team

    McCarthy

    VVD TAA Holgate (Rico Williams)

    Barnes KDB Salah Saka (Martial)

    Jiminez Vardy Auba

I’m thinking maybe VVD to Alonso and Martial to Bruno?

    Please help:

    A) Ings + Martial to Auba + Saka (-4)
    B) Firmino + Trossard to Auba + Saka (-4)
    C) Pope to Leno (for free)
    D) A or B + C (-8)
    E) Save FT

    Current team:
    Pope
    TAA - Soy - Bertrand - Egan - Webster
    KDB - Salah - Barnes - Martial - Trossard
    Firmino - Jimenez - Ings

1 FT, 0.9m in the bank, planning FH 31

What would you do??? Kills me to sell Firmino before Bournemouth at home, but no Auba will make this GW a nightmare...
