FFS Cup

The latest FFS Cup fixtures and results

The first round of our second open-to-all Fantasy Premier League cup competition of 2019/20 took place in a shorter-than-expected Gameweek 29.

Manchester City v Arsenal was due to take place on Wednesday evening, of course, but the postponement of that match has brought the Gameweek to a premature conclusion.

FIRST ROUND RECAP

All results from the first round can be viewed here.

Six of our nine former winners who were in round one fell at the first hurdle.

Only Joe, Wild Rover and reigning champion Philman made it through to the next stage from this select group.

Joe defeated PELA0409 by 50 points to 35, while Wild Rover was a 45-42 winner over bitm2007.

Philman’s defence of his title began with a 55-46 victory over Baps Sniffer.

Ex-champions Gribude, Sleeping master, Leon Harris, A Manager Has No Name, TH14 and Lokomotiv all bowed out, meanwhile.

Gribude and Lokomotiv were comprehensively beaten 74-28 and 83-42 by Gilbo88 and Rolls-Royce respectively, while in a much closer contest, A Manager Has No Name was edged out 37-36 by spurs.

Pirate Angel, Lulli XI and Saubarna Deep were the conquerors of TH17, Sleeping master and Leon Harris, with all three of those head to heads settled by seven FPL points or fewer.

On the editorial staff front, andy85wsm beat Carlton Palmer 67-41, while editor DavidMunday815 was defeated 58-47 by Binny.

Three of the 512 managers in the first round of the FFS Cup were inside the top 1k at the point of the Gameweek 29 deadline and they all progressed in round one.

rdamjam, who now sits at 53rd in the world, is the highest-ranked manager in the competition and saw off Wayne.burrows by 67 points to 63.

Our two other site users inside the top 1,000 before (and after) this weekend were prbaker1980 and Bury94, who ended the challenges of RedLightning and Chara’s Rangers respectively.

We now have another round two representative with a triple-figure overall rank after the completion of Gameweek 29.

PHILIPK overtook the OR of round one opponent GrecianDan with an 83-44 success and now lies in 965th place in the world.

The highest score of the first round was Dr Rabotnicki‘s 101, while the likely draft also hit a century.

Both managers used their Bench Boost chips in Gameweek 29.

SECOND ROUND DRAW

The full draw for the second round is available to view here.

Joe, Wild Rover and Philman next face Chalky77, faux C and aufeld respectively in their bids to win second FFS Cup titles.

Njdemon has the unenviable task of stopping rdamjam, while stamfordbridge, who finished fourth in our first FFS Cup of 2019/20, is up against another manager inside the top 1,000, prbaker1980.

JohnBlack faces PHILIPK and Kvelertak squares off against Bury94 in two ‘top 10k v top 1k’ clashes.

Santigold v theonefjef is our only other all-top 10k tie in round two.

HOW DO THE CUP COMPETITIONS WORK?

The FFS Cup is very similar to the Fantasy Premier League’s own cup game.

Entrants who qualify for the first round were randomly drawn against each other and the winner of the tie is whoever has the highest score from that Gameweek, minus points spent on transfers (like in the original game and in head-to-head scores).

In the event of a draw, the manager highest in the overall FPL rankings after the tie will progress.

WHAT IS THE GAMEWEEK SCHEDULE?

The FFS Cup competition will be played out according to the following proposed Gameweek schedule:

Fantasy Football Scout Cup Round Dates
Qualifying – Gameweek 28

Round 1 – Gameweek 29
Round 2 – Gameweek 30
Round 3 – Gameweek 31
Round 4 – Gameweek 32
Round 5 – Gameweek 33
Round 6 – Gameweek 34
Quarter-Final – Gameweek 35
Semi-Finals – Gameweek 36
Final and third-place play-off – Gameweek 37

WHEN ARE THE FIXTURES RELEASED?

Where possible, the fixture list for each round will be published before each Gameweek deadline.

    The Review - GW 29

Greetings everyone! With GW 29 coming to a premature end due to the postponement of Man City vs Arsenal, I look back at the key events of the weekend gone by in this week’s review:

(Raw data taken from FFScout with permission)

    1) No team conceded more shots inside the box than Spurs this gameweek - which brings me to the point that I highlighted in one of my earlier threads. The dissimilarity in the defensive numbers between Jose Mourinho’s first eight weeks at the helm at Spurs and what followed later couldn’t be more apparent. From GW 13-20, Spurs were conceding shots inside the box at ≈6.89 per game which have leapt up alarmingly to ≈10.78 per game between GW 21-29. Correspondingly, big chances conceded per game have risen precariously from ≈0.75 to ≈2.78.

    2) The main beneficiaries of Spurs’ defensive woes this week were Jay Rodriguez and Chris Wood. Burnley’s forwards are considered to be unfashionable hence often tend to go under the radar but it is important to highlight that Wood has averaged a big chance per game in the last six games he has started while no player in the league has recorded as many big chances as Rodriguez over the past five gameweeks! Both can be good options going into gameweek 31.

    3) No player has recorded as many big chances as Michail Antonio over the past two gameweeks. He was one of the most underperforming players according to the xG model this week. His position map has been very encouraging as he’s been West Ham’s most advanced player so is one to definitely keep an eye on going into gameweek 31 when he comes up against a Spurs defence that have been all over the place of late.

    4) Another player to look at for gameweek 31 is Spurs’ Dele Alli, who has the best big chances per game ratio of all players in the league over the past six gameweeks. Over this period, he is ranked top for xG for midfielders too yet has only managed to score twice. It is fair to expect regression with Spurs’ injuries but a point to note is that Alli’s goal involvement has shot up from his season average of ≈21% to ≈75% ever since Son and Kane have been injured - he is taking responsibility of being the main man.

    5) In games that De Bruyne has started this season, City are averaging ≈13.44 shots in the box (vs ≈10.33 without him) and ≈3.84 big chances per game (vs ≈2.33 without him). In games that he missed last season, they averaged ≈13.36 shots in the box and ≈3.86 big chances per game. Which begs the question, why are City so dependent on De Bruyne this year when without him last year they had similar numbers for creativity?

    6) Loss in form can be highlighted through minutes per chance created:
    (19/20 vs 18/19)

    Sterling: 62 vs 44
    Bernardo: 55 vs 44
    Gundogan: 51 vs 46
    Mahrez: 29 vs 59

Mahrez the only one who has improved this season. Loss of Sane and bizarre absence of David Silva huge factors for regression too.

    7) No team conceded more big chances this gameweek than Southampton - which is extremely alarming despite the fact that they were down to ten men given that Newcastle before this week were ranked bottom for big chances in away games all season. Between GW 14-24, the Saints conceded the fewest big chances in the league at ≈1.27 per game. But from GW 25-29, they have conceded the second highest number of big chances in the league at ≈3.80 per game.

    8) Another big chance recorded by Dominic Calvert Lewin against Chelsea means that he is the only player in the league this season who has been on a streak of recording at least one big chance per game for eight successive gameweeks. At £6.4 he's still a steal.

    9) 18 shots in the box, 9 big chances, 47 penalty area touches - best for forwards in all categories, yet just a single goal over the past six GW's with an exceptionally low conversion rate of ≈5%. Ladies and gentlemen, Roberto Firmino taking FPL underpeformance to another level.

    10) Only three teams have conceded more big chances than Liverpool over the past three gameweeks. This has coincided with the absence of Jordan Henderson – Liverpool’s defensive numbers with and without this season tell their own story. Shots inside the box conceded per game with Henderson have been ≈5.68 (vs ≈10.10 without him) while big chances conceded per game with him have been ≈1.24 (vs ≈4.33 without him).

Great stuff, cheers. Any hypotheses on why City are so awful without KDB this season and were so good without him last year? Is it the loss of Laporte and Sane, decline of Silva, and Fernandinho not in midfield this season which gets exacerbated when KDB isn't there to bail them out?

What happened to Southampton between GW24 and 25 which saw their defence inexplicably turn from amazing to awful?

Similarly, what happened to Spurs between GW20 and 21 to cause the same problem??

And why did Everton randomly go from competent to a shambles in one match?

Its these unfathomable and extreme changes in form which have made the season so tough I think, as this isn't the first time teams have lurched from good to bad in one week. It makes a mockery of planning and a patient strategy.

        Pleasure mate! 😉

I think it's a combination of all the factors you pointed out and the fact that Sterling/Bernardo haven't hit the heights of last season. Also think Guardiola unlike last season, apart from Ederson and De Bruyne this season, hasn't settled on a "core" yet which has been part of the problem.

Southampton's loss in form has very strange and extreme. Both their defensive and offensive numbers seem to have fallen off a cliff. Not sure what went wrong there! Maybe it's down to poor confidence once they started losing.

I guess it's because Mourinho's honeymoon period came to an end.

I don't think Everton improved defensively under Ancelotti, they are still a work in progress in that area. The attack is what has really shone.

Which kind of also highlights how arbitrary this is - if the infected person wasn't a celebrity there wouldn't have been a public statement, and Arsenal would've been none the wiser about it. It may be that nobody was infected, but in other cases people are less fortunate.

            • 13 Years

But they've counted days they've played as days of isolation which defeats the whole purpose.

they're not counting them as isolation days, they're counting them as incubation period, so if at the end of the 14 days they show no symptoms then they know they don't have it.

105.4 - its been steady at that all season. I always seem to have enough money to do the deals i want so it hasnt restricted me. Saying that, its nice to have a few extra million to play with. I had Salah & Mane in for a while and the rest of the squad was still decent and others in my league couldnt stretch to it. Though it hasnt affected your performance obviously.

102.5 gone down a lot lately as i've held Vardy and Lundstram for example, but 23 points from them this week.

All the way down to 102.8 as I've taken out all my big risers (Lund, KDB, Vardy). I pay no attention to rises and falls for transfer decisions other than timing and I think it does hurt some years. However, the fact that the traditional big 6 are not destroying the rest this year (and Chelsea all being under 7m) means budget has been almost irrelevant.

Risky move until more info on the virus comes to light. West Ham game(s) could be cancelled, given that they played Arsenal in the interim between Olympiacos and the recent news.

Living through the years around 1918 must have been crap in certain parts of the world (World and Civil Wars, a few genocides, deadliest modern virus).
Everyone used to say how lucky we were to live now, but I have a feeling the 'golden age' if there was one may have already passed 🙂

I agree but the size of the swing is still brutal. Barnes probably won't have another 19 point week in his career and Vardy came on 90 seconds before they got a penalty for the ball hitting a shoulder.

For all those on a FH in GW31, any of Pedro (6.8m), Mount (6.1m), Willian (6.9m), Barkley (5.6m), Alonso (6.1m) and Giroud (6.5m) could be great shouts this week and then after the blank.
For us that are navigating, Antonio (6.9m) looks like he could be an excellent differential. 0.8% ownership with Wolves at home then away to Spurs. His heat-map has him the furthest up the field by far even when Haller plays.
With his hamstring injury behind him, I think he has the backing of Moyes to be their game changer. Similar to players like Traore, he can be very inconsistent and frustrating to watch, but he keeps getting these big chances and I'm willing to take the plunge.
Anyone else looking outside the template with players like Antonio? McNeil (6.0m) for Burnley also has just 1.1% but I expect that to creep up after the City game

Currently have TAA, VVD and Salah as my Pool players for GW31. How essential is Mane? Would you take a hit and maybe also have one less player for GW31 to get Mane in for VVD? Palace haven’t conceded loads lately.
