All eyes on UEFA emergency meeting to decide future of European football

Fantasy Premier League managers should learn more about the future of the football season today.

UEFA is holding an emergency meeting with representatives of European football federations, clubs and leagues to make decisions about the football schedule in the coming months.

Sport on the continent has been brought to a standstill over the last fortnight following the recent coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

The Premier League was also affected as numbers of confirmed cases in the United Kingdom rose sharply last week.

That led to a postponement of all matches between now and April 4, with Gameweeks 30 and 31 of FPL reduced to completely fixture-less Blank Gameweeks.

Today’s UEFA meeting is a key piece of the puzzle that will pave the way for when the Premier League could return.

Conducted via video conference call and led by UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin, the meeting will take the views from all 55 of UEFA’s member associations on a number of issues including the Champions League, Europa League and Euro 2020. Final decisions will then be taken by the UEFA Executive Committee.

Euro 2020 is the tournament that hangs most in the balance at this current point in time. It was supposed to be played in 12 European cities between June and July – but the UK’s chief medical adviser Professor Chris Witty believes this country’s peak COVID-19 outbreak period could occur during this time.

Either way, the absence of Euro 2020 from the football calendar is looking to be the likeliest way to help Europe’s leagues find time to complete their 2019/20 seasons.

Not surprisingly, Italy, which has been harder hit by the coronavirus outbreak than most European nations, is set to support the postponement of the upcoming major international tournament.

“We will propose to UEFA the delay of the European Championships. We will try to get to the end of this [domestic] championship because it is fairer and more correct after the many investments and sacrifices of our clubs.” – Gabriele Gravina, president of the Italian Football Federation

The completion of this season’s Champions League and Europa League will also be up for discussion and could have an impact on domestic football in this country.

It has been suggested that each of these competitions may be finalised using a mini-tournament in order to ease fixture congestion – which could see one-legged quarter-finals and semi-finals. Either way, we should know more by the end of today.

Regardless of what gets decided by UEFA on Tuesday, Fantasy managers will still have to stay tuned into the news until at least Thursday, when the Premier League their next emergency meeting.

Using what decisions have been made by UEFA, the Premier League will know more about what options they have to complete the 2019/20 season.

“It is most essential that domestic competitions can be completed this season, to limit the negative impact for the entire football ecosystem. This crisis is also causing very serious sporting and financial consequences to all parties involved in the game. We are ready to cooperate with UEFA and other stakeholders to find common solutions to all these issues in a constructive way, including the international club competitions and Euro 2020.” – European Leagues body statement

There was a further update from Boris Johnson on Monday afternoon which placed further obstacles in the way of a Premier League return.

In the first of his daily press conferences, the UK Prime Minister advised against unnecessary social contact of all kinds and attending mass gatherings, specifically referencing sports fixtures, which will no longer have the required medical help from the NHS.

“We need people to start working from home and you should avoid pubs, clubs and other such social venues. It remains true that risks of transmission at mass gatherings such as sporting events are relatively low. But as we advise against unnecessary social contact of all kinds, it’s right that we should extend that advice to mass gatherings. We’ve also got to ensure that we have the critical workers we need that might otherwise (be engaged at sporting events). We will no longer be supporting mass gatherings with emergency workers in the way that we normally would.” – Boris Johnson

People need to forget about politics and stick together and follow advice. Arguments should be put on the back burner for now. We can all argue when this is over.

The point is they should have been doing this weeks ago, not saying "Keep calm and carry on" and then suddenly getting into a panic last week.

THE prime minister has announced the UK’s latest half-arsed half-measures to stop the coronavirus spreading without really doing anything. They are:

      Discouraging theatre visits
The London-based government’s assumption that Britons regularly visit the theatre was already wildly inaccurate, but even then stopped short of actually closing theatres. Johnson merely tried to put everyone off by reading a list of Shakespeare’s comedies.

Saying ‘Don’t go to the pub’
Pubs stay open, continuing to sell thirst-quenching alcoholic drinks to anyone with a relaxed attitude to their long-term health. Their regulars have already been told not to go to the pub many, many times. They do not tend to listen.

      Advising over-70s to stay indoors
Having recently won an election by banking on pensioners’ propensity to ignore all warnings of disaster, Johnson is now attempting to cut them off from their watercolour classes. Large groups of over-70s will convene later today to say what a ninny he is being.

Warning against non-essential travel or contact
A nation that believes it essential to rack up credit card debt to wear T-shirts with CHANEL on has a very flexible definition of the word ‘essential’, one that will certainly encompass visiting Alton Towers at the height of a pandemic because there won’t be any queues.

      Work from home if possible
Official advice for everyone to work from home will be followed by all those who can, which is less than half the country. The rest have been advised that they should have moved upstairs into admin way sooner.

Only use the NHS when you need to
You know on a Friday night, when everyone’s had a few drinks and you go gang-handed down to your local hospital’s endoscopy department to see who’s got the best-looking lower bowel? That has to stop.

Recommending everyone cancel everything while keeping f**king schools open
There’s no reasoning behind this one.

Not much activity on here as expected. One thought, presuming season runs past June will we see players move club before the end of the season!? Will be very different unless they push that to become a very short window which I can’t really see them doing.

RVN up front alone with Scholes or Veron at 10 I think most likely, but who knows what the game will do.
IRL Cole and Yorke hardly featured and both went to Blackburn.
Think OGS could also play as a wide-mid in Champo at this time (and Phil Nev D/M - L/R too).

Not official yet but UEFA suggest that if we couldnt finish this league season champion in every country will be actual leader of the table. Relegation teams/rules can be set by every country on their own.

Similar situation was in 1999 in Jugoslavia (war) where league was stopped and Partizan as league leader became a champion.

Similar rule will be for teams who will play in european cups next season - position in every league at this moment.

There is no good idea. Every plan sounds bad but we must do something.
Most countries will do it - no relegation this season and bigger league next season with more teams to be relegated.

My "second" team is in the Championship play off places - if we went up we would likely be embarrassed again like last time we were in PL. I'd rather we stayed down and I think that secretly plenty of other fans would agree (though not the owner obvs) so this would be a great excuse.

Needs must I suppose but a bit unfair on the teams who could end up in the 3rd place qualifiers in championship. Is sometimes won by a team with momentum who gets in in 6th in the last few weeks.

There is no perfect option, there always be someone who will be punished more than others.
No relegation and bigger leagues next season (with teams who qualify to higher league).
Next season more teams will be relegated.

Isn't it up to each individual league who they choose to send into the Champion's League anyway?

I.e. UEFA say to the PL that you have 4 representatives, it's up to you how you choose them. And the PL just happens to use the top 4 places.

      1. StoichkovFPL
        • 8 Years

The will just suggest the solution. Every country can set their own rules but I think many people will chose to go "UEFA path" and blame them instead of risking making their own rules.

The best Championship teams can hope for IMO is a two legged play off between the champions and the team that finishes bottom of the EPL. I can't see second and third bottom being subjected to play offs. My guess is that no team will be relegated if the season can't be finished. All guess work at the moment with so many moving parts.

Absolutely horrible idea, not a big deal in england for the winner, but it is when looking at European qualification, too many in the mix.
And what about Germany, Spain, italy, where the league is really tight(pretty sure Juventus just got back to 1st in the last gw played).
This is probably one of the worst suggestions. I'd sooner sack all international football, and resume the leagues at a minimum and work out a way to complete them before starting again next season.

Who has your favourite player been in FPL so far this season?

I think mine has to be Mane - I got him in GW3 on WC and have held him ever since, and he's been great as a captain over Salah and as an attacking double up.

Special mention to Soyuncu (and Cantwell) who I've also held ever since my GW3 WC.

      T. A. A.

I remember vividly the criticism of him as being too expensive around about his nadir in GW15/16 when Pool had somehow freakishly only kept 2 cleansheets in their first 15-ish games

(Despite having the best XGc and lowest goals conceded in the league pointing towards obvious statistical outlier territory) and Allison having just returned - even the old classic “he’s a nostalgia pick” was being dusted off

Then came the blank GW announcement & things got even crazier & more short-termist with the “why I’m selling TAA” articles

In true FPL “form is temporary/class is permanent” style though he delivered in the end

      GW19 was particularly poetic 🙂

Where else to start than Lord Lundstram? I've gotten just about all of his big hauls - including one 12-pointer off the bench sometime in September and the 21-pointer vs. Burnley. I even captained him one week.

An unorthodox one: Nicolas Pepe. I got him for a very short period when Arsenal had a nice run of fixtures (Villa and Bournemouth at home) and he managed to get returns in both of those games. I sold him immediately after but it was a move that somewhat paid off.

I made spot on decisions about my GKs. Almost perfectly owned best ones in best moments.

Started with Ryan and he was highest scoring GK in the game, than I changed to Henderson who got me a lot of points (Ryan flop almost at same time) and than bought Pope who also got me nice returns.

Also Grealish and Mane (own both in right time) got me nice returns

He and Jota the only ones I still have from Wk 1 - though both have left the team at some point (TAA for about a week, Jota for about 28 weeks).
Barnes (Leic) and Fernandez (Newc) since I got them recently.

It kind of pains me to say it as a Man United fan but i have to say Mane was my favorite player this season.

I got him into my team for Salah during a gw3 wildcard after a sluggish start in fpl and he has been in my squad ever since. My only regret is that i did not trust Sadio with the armband more often than i did.Sadio was the standout player for Liverpool this season imo and excelled in his attacking and even his defensive duty's when called upon.It will be a shame if he does not pick up a winners medal this season but he certainly has won a medal of honor from me.

Other players that have stood by me and served with distinction were my goal keeper combo of Ryan and Pope even though i often benched the wrong one due to bad management. That was not their fault though and one of the combo often delivered the goods this season.

John Lundstram is surly one of the legends of the season and although i have had John in the team since gw3 i often missed his points due to benching him.Missed Johns 21 point haul back in gw11 when i failed to sort my team and missed the deadline after a heavy night out at a mates stag party.Again just shoddy management and not Johns fault.

I've owned Ryan, TAA, Robbo, KdB and Grealish since pre-season. I'd have to say KdB. I gambled on him being the value pick over Sterling and overall it's paid off. Grealish gets a special mention as he was originally just a Hudson-Odoi placeholder! He's done brilliant for me too.

Gold- KDB. Owned him since the start and has proven to be a great captain alternative as well
Silver- Ings. When others were looking to go 3-5-2 formation, Ings showed he was a viable 3rd (even 2nd) striker option for a long stretch
      Bronze- Trent. Enough said

Saw a thread earlier about who was your best asset this season..

Reminded me of an interview I heard discussing Neil Warnock ruing the day he listened to his chief scout at Crystal Palace who having been to Celtic to look at VVD who was being offered at 6 million.. HE believed when he said VVD was too slow and not worth the money. The scout is still working !!

Which player did you miss out on this season by listening to advice on this forum ?

Different opinions at different times, can't always see a players ultimate potential or later improvement with better coaches. Some Italian lady pundit was slated for not having the hindsight to predict Salah's fortunes in his first Liverpool season. She didn't rate him that highly that preseason.God himself couldn't have predicted he would do what he did.

Funnily enough, I actually was thinking about this a few months ago. An app which you could set your team up, then invite friends and sim weeks getting points. Simple concept but big issue with rights.

If I were better at apps then this could be a perfect storm to set up the concept then approach premier league .

We can do it imo but not sure about the rights thing.

If @mods here could do it and show games on Scoutcast it would be great but if not than people can do it on their own on skype etc.
An app would be very usefull but we could use FPL site as it works so we can set up teams there and post it here or on twitter etc. Just need to set up some rules etc but it all can be done.

I actually like to think I'm a good coder - maybe I could set up something simple where you could build a team with a fixed budget by selecting players.

I'd have databases with player prices (that can be changed) and everyone's points - if there are so few players it would be a lot easier to calculate ranks and stuff.

Unrelated to C-Virus or FPL, but a thing of beauty to kill 30 seconds of self-isolation.

18th December 1996, League Cup 4th round, Edgeley Park, Stockport - the time Florin Raducioiu went shopping at Harvey Nichols with his wife instead of turning up for a League Cup tie at Stockport, which West Ham lost thanks to a storming own goal from Iain Dowie:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Im_sME-zlQA

I was there (which ages me) - remember the half-time cig (which also ages me) more clearly than the goal for some reason.

I was thinking of getting DCL for Auba to be able to get Bruno Fernandes and Alonso soon but
Arsenal City Villa Sheffield still have one more fixture than the rest to play and we have bo idea when that might be.
Also if the season were to continue in GW32 Auba playes Norwich..

Worth binning Auba if you can get Bruno and Alonso I reckon.

Both seasons at the same time, would be m absurdist dream.

Youd have two fantasy games going on.

Gw1 of next season on August 20th
The midweek GW36 of this season.
Then August 27th GW2 of next season and so on

The higher you build your barriers
    The taller I become
The further you take my rights away
    The faster I will run
You can deny me, you can decide
    To turn your face away
    No matter 'cause there's
    Something inside so strong
I know that I can make it
Though you're doing me wrong, so wrong
You thought that my pride was gone, oh no
    There's something inside so strong
    Oh, something inside so strong
The more you refuse to hear my voice (ooh-weh ooh-weh ooh-weh ooh-weh)
    The louder I will sing
You hide behind walls of Jericho (ooh-weh ooh-weh ooh-weh ooh-weh)
    Your lies will come tumbling
Deny my place in time, you squander wealth that's mine
My light will shine so brightly it will blind you
    Because there's
    Something inside so strong, strong
I know that I can make it
    Though…! 🙂

Come senators, congressmen, please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway, don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt, will be he who has stalled
      The battle outside raging
Will soon shake your windows and rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changing

Fair play to Boris and his alternative medicine qualifications. Giving hardworking clowns a bad name.

Well I wouldn't say nothing but I wouldn't say a definitive response either.

Avoid mass gatherings but schools are yet to be shut.
Advised to close pubs etc but no enforcement to do so as presumably, government would have to pay out insurances so pub etc owners are having to stay open.
