Last weekend saw the launch of Virtual FPL, a Fantasy game devised and developed by long-time friend of Fantasy Football Scout and all-round genius, Ragabolly (aka Live FPL).

To say the opening Gameweek was a success is an understatement: over 2,000 teams were entered ahead of the deadline, despite there being relatively little promotion of the game until the back-end of last week.

Anyone still wanting to get involved who hasn’t already registered a team can still sign up (there are 37 Gameweeks to go, after all), with the full details of the game available via the link below.

READ MORE: How to sign up and play Virtual FPL

You now can create your own mini-leagues, too.

We’ve set one up already (imaginatively titled ‘Fantasy Football Scout’) and you can join by entering the code 9RV4A via the below link.

Gameweek 2-5 Fixtures

While there is a week-long gap between Gameweeks 1 and 2 to allow Ragabolly to iron out a few creases in the game, the plan is to step up the frequency of fixtures thereafter.

Four Gameweeks will be staged every week, with matches taking place on Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.

The deadline for each Gameweek will be at 19:00 BST, with the fixtures starting at 20:00 BST and being simulated, one by one, every ten minutes.

Gameweeks 2 to 5 of Virtual FPL are next up, then, with the Season Ticker looking as follows for those games:

Aston Villa have a trio of home games to come, while three of Chelsea, Watford and Tottenham Hotspur‘s next four fixtures are also on their own turf.

Southampton have three fixtures on the road to come before they are back at St Mary’s, meanwhile.

Manchester City‘s next three games are among the least appealing but, as they demonstrated in Gameweek 1, the calibre of opposition isn’t necessarily the be-all and end-all.

Gameweek 1 Notes

Bruno Fernandes
How Bruno Fernandes fared on his United debut as fit-again Boly solidifies Wolves

Continuing where he left off in ‘real-life’ FPL, Bruno Fernandes (£8.5m) hit the ground running in Ragabolly’s game.

The Manchester United midfielder was not only the highest-scoring asset of Gameweek 1 but was also involved in more of his side’s attacks (14) than any other player in this virtual division.

While Manchester City await the Red Devils on Saturday, Fernandes did bag an assist and three bonus points (again being involved in a dozen of his team’s attacks) in a pre-season friendly between the two local rivals.

Captain Obvious

The ten most popular captains of Gameweek 1 all scored at least six points.

Continuing with this trend, only one of the 16 most-owned midfielders and forwards blanked on the opening weekend.

The odd one out was Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£6.4m), who had scored in the original sim of Newcastle v Everton before Ragabolly was forced to re-run the match.

Given that there were only three clean sheets in the ten Virtual FPL fixtures in Gameweek 1, the early indications suggest that attackers are going to be on top in Ragabolly’s Fantasy game – although it’s still early days and we await to see if any clearer patterns develop in Gameweek 2 and beyond.

On the Spot

Five penalties were awarded on the opening weekend and we were given further clues as to who would be on spot-kick duties for their respective teams.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.m), Raul Jimenez (£8.1m) and, interestingly, Patrick van Aanholt (£5.6m) all stepped up for their respective clubs and scored from 12 yards.

Neal Maupay (£5.7m) was twice handed the responsibility from the penalty spot for Brighton but, incredibly, missed on both occasions.

Van Aanholt, Maupay and Jimenez, indeed, had taken penalties in pre-season, too.

Wolves and Liverpool

While Manchester City produced the most eye-catching scoreline of Gameweek 1, they scored on six occasions from just 18 attacks: seven teams had more efforts on goal last weekend than the Citizens.

The two teams who registered the most attacks (27 each) of Gameweek 1 were Liverpool and Wolves.

The two sides had tricky games on paper, with the Reds away at Sheffield United and Nuno Espirito Santo’s troops hosting Chelsea, but were well on top in both their games, registering around twice as many attacks as their respective opponents.

Liverpool’s next fixture is against Arsenal, a side they beat 3-1 in pre-season – a match they also registered 27 goal attempts in.

Matt Doherty (£6.3m) was involved in eight of Wolves’ attacks against Chelsea, which was the most any defender recorded in Gameweek 1.

Conor Coady‘s (£5.0m) total of five attacking involvements was the next best among FPL defenders, although Ragabolly has hinted that he may look to address the simulation’s handling of a player who is not known for his goalscoring exploits in real life.

Back Fours

All 20 of the teams involved in Gameweek 1 played with four FPL defenders in their initial line-ups, so clubs we usually see adopting a wing-back system – such as Sheffield United and Wolves – were missing a defender who would usually play.

Chris Basham (£4.6m) and Jonny (£5.4m) were the unlucky men from these two clubs last weekend, although the pre-season games saw other regular first-teamers omitted from the starting XIs (namely George Baldock (£5.1m) and Doherty).

Injuries and Suspensions

Three players saw red in Gameweek 1, with two of them, Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) and Ashley Barnes (£6.1m), now sidelined for three matches.

Every single Virtual FPL player started this simulated season fit and available but six Fantasy assets picked up injuries in Gameweek 1.

Alex Iwobi‘s (£5.6m) was the most serious, with the Everton winger set to be missing until Gameweek 10.

Angus Gunn‘s (£4.2m) enforced two-match absence seems set to give Alex McCarthy (£4.5m) the chance to regain his place in the short term at least.

Head to the Virtual FPL site for more Gameweek 1 stats and to sign up, if you haven’t already and still wish to do so.

Thanks it's a bit misleading because I wasted my BB (3 points). It's seemed the logical time to use it as I had a bit of money to spare, there are no DGW's, and after I've WC I will priorities the first 11 with fodder on the bench probably Button, Hanley and Hayden and one half decent defender, but even that would probably have scored twice as many points as I got.

Yes I'm treating Virtual FPL as a bit of fun, I'd never have BB GW1 in real life FPL where there are DGW's to save it for. Having said that I didn't do any better with it in FPL last season after my DGW37 BB didn't register resulting in me having to use in the rotation lottery of GW38 !

I prioritised a good start in GW1 of Virtual FPL so have no Pope of Sheff United D. What's my best move

    A) Leno to Pope (play over McCarthy)
    B) Fernandez to Egan

    McCarthy (Leno)
    TAA, Soy, Fernandez (Ward, Rico)
    Salah, Fernandes, Grealish, Barnes (Cantwell)
    Auba, Vardy, Ayew

I think its ruined football tbh, lets say we go again in June, if one player gets the virus then the whole team has to isolate for 7/14 days. Surely one player will get it. It's a total mess

And then that team is at a big disadvantage because one player contracted it, is that the same as normal injury? Just hard cheese I guess

Which is why it won't happen. Start next season asap - early August if possible

and what's to stop the same thing happen in early August (which ever season it is) ! The Coronavirus will still be a threat to the FPL until a vaccine has been found. The government are trying to control the spread of the virus to protect the NHS not eliminate it, cases are still expected to be high in the summer (with monthly peaks and possibly further lockdowns to control them) so I will be surprised if we can get through next season unaffected, so if you cancel this season you are risking losing two, especially as the virus is expected to peak again next winner.

What's to say it won't happen in August or whenever the new season is? Your whole post history is pretty much saying void the league etc, yet you're blind to the fact that this virus isn't going to disappear for the new season..which would only be a month or so later.

Yes earlier today Transport Secretary Grant Shapps advised against booking a summer break because the number of coronavirus cases had not dropped sufficiently to be sure that current restrictions would be lifted by then, and there has been another report today warning us to prepare for up to six waves of coronavirus in next year.

Thought I'd use my possibly pointless transfers to change keeper(s). Have Button (to a playing keeper) and Krul (originally for dgw).

    Any thoughts?
    A) Button to Pope/McCarthy/Leno (extra game)
    B) Krul to ?
    C) Change both

    1. Conners
      • 7 Years

I'd probably just keep Krul and replace Button with a playing keeper and leave it at that.

Ógie, they've probably done one before but I hope they get Johnny to pick a best 11 he's played with and a best 11 he's played against. He's old school but comes up with some gems of insight like Dalglish's positional sense. I used to think positional sense was just taking a defender one way then getting into space to take a pass. Never dawned on me that standing in one spot waiting for a ball lying closer or deeper, reading the pass and best place to have your first touch to beat the next man or shot or pass is part of the positional sense. He's also on the stand podcast with Dunphy and Brady. Nathan is grand but, een though he's from my hometown, I find listening to the lads on the Stand is much better. They don't mince their words and realise that the Premier League didn't invent football 🙂

Is Mr Ragabolly about? I just noticed in one of my arranged friendlies, that De Gea got a Second Yellow/Red card in the 87th minute, yet went on to make saves in the 88th and 90th minute. Man Utd had made all three substitutions by the 74th minute.

    From PL statement:

In common with other businesses and industries, the Premier League and our clubs are working through complex planning scenarios.

Today's shareholders' meeting provided an opportunity to discuss possible scheduling models. It remains our objective to complete the 2019-2020 season but at this stage all dates are tentative while the impact of Covid-19 develops.

Its all very well for the PL to keep stating 'we intend to finish the season', but surely there has to be a cut off date somewhere down the line.

The European Championships need to start next June so there can't be any significant delay to the 20/21 season if the Euros are going ahead.

Cheers very much, TM! Basically all Ragabolly's hard work that I've just slapped my name on top of.

Nice article. I could only find potential transfer stats by looking at GW1 game stats. Kinda cool to have to do a bit of work to get more details rather than seeing stats set out FPL style. Are Bench boost and Triple Captain chips reversible right up to deadline?

Was gonna captain Aguero but he plays better in dry weather and forecast for Manchester is very wet .......

Yes those are reversible, WC and FH are not

    RMT my vFPL team (3-5-2):

    Henderson
    TAA, Alonso, Holgate
    Salah, Fernandes, Sarr, Barnes, CHO
    Vardy, Abraham

    subs: Button, Taylor, Greenwood, Simpson.
    ITB: £4.2m

I did Martial to Sarr this week, I have Fernandes and not sure I need two United players. Sarr looks great value. Plan to do Vardy to Auba next GW, and maybe bring in Jimenez and Doherty for GW4.

Otherwise no City players looks like a mistake... CHO did well in the pre-season match I simulated, and Chelsea have a nice run so I thought he might be a canny under the radar pick. Of course he then doesn't start. Thinking about going four at the back with TAA, Alonso, Doherty, PVA.

Virtual Grand National (watched by 5 million people), Virtual Grand Prix's (driven by real drivers), Virtual Madrid Open Tennis (played by real players) etc it's the way sport is being kept in the public eye at the moment

I think folk playing it is fine but RMT and A and B
questions ? What are people basing the answers on exactly . I must have missed something.

If there is one time that you'd think people would just make their own decisions it would be a virtual game, but apparently not.

You would think if they ever are going to now is the time.

Oddly enough I haven't posted a single RMT all season but just did one above for vFPL. Why not? It's just a bit of fun, there are lots of friendly matches that can be simulated, people might have simulated different matches and have something to share. I thought it might be nice to have an FPL type chat while there's nothing going on. Not that anyone shared their thoughts on my RMT...

    A) Leno + Mount
    or
    (B) Ederson + Decoure

Replacing Henderson + Zaha, due to fixtures and have Lund.

I noticed there is no auto sub in case one of the starting 11 doesn’t play. Correct?

Also, can you roll over a transfer to the following GW and have 2 FT?

    Thanks for this great game!

There are autsoubs, I didn't visually replace the players on the website but their points and everything is taken into account.

And you can save up to 2FT.

Thanks again for setting this up mate. Can you confirm how I can check the status of a player and previous match reports & line ups please. I'm curious why McCarthy didn't play and whether I should be transferring him out.

http://www.livefpl.net/fixtures, jump to full time will show you the match reports.

All players are available except the ones that appear in the suspensions page http://www.livefpl.net/suspensions

McCarthy didn't start the game as Gunn was favored. But Gunn was then injured and McCarthy was subbed in for a total of 0 points. That's why there is no autsoub for him, he did play. Gunn is out for two GWs, so you can keep McCarthy

For gameweek 2 in virtual fpl play Mount against crystal palace or Aubameyang against Liverpool ? Thanks ! I am leaning towards Aubameyang actually because Chelsea are performing bad in friendlies + if they are scoring mount is not at all involved in the friendlies. Thoughts ?
