Using the ‘per 90’ tool to assess FPL midfielders with the best goal threat

Our series of Members’ articles looking at per 90 minutes statistics has already focused on defenders for creatvity and goal threat.

Having also checked out the standout midfielders for key passes, we turn our attentions to those who have impressed when it comes to shots inside the opposition box.

It should be noted that players must have at least 10 appearances in order to qualify for our assessment.

Any tool that makes Pulisic look good is fundamentally flawed and should be ignored. 😀

Tbf if he'd put away some of the chances he's fashioned we'd all be singing a different song, though that's pretty obvious.

Certainly think he has the makings of a great FPL winger.

A potential major setback to #Bundesliga restart as 2 members of Dynamo Dresden test positive for COVID-19. It's their second set of positive results and comes after two sessions of full-contact training. Local health authority places entire squad and staff in a 14-day lockdown.

Not an answer to what you're asking, but the problem with these tests is that it just shows whether you have it there and then, but you can literally get it straight after. And there are also false negatives.

Salah is a season keeper. Don't buy, don't sell. I would only get rid of him on a FH when he has a difficult fixture and you can disperse the funds to target other juicy fixtures.

Watford, Villa, Norwich and West Ham have joined Brighton's revolt to only play if relegation is removed.

It's such a shame that only 3 teams can get relegated.

Disappointing to read that as a Norwich fan.

      What’s the point?

Be interested to see what they and Villa said if the alternative option was “the season stands as is”.

Filthy fishing for an Eredivise style, null and void, end to the season.

As a Villa fan I'm all for anything that stops relegation but, bias aside, the reality is that it makes no sense. The powers that been need to stop messing around and just make a decision and deal with the consequences of that decision. No point even asking clubs what they want.

It's easy for the larger clubs and their supporters to criticise the smaller clubs for taking this stance.

You can afford to adopt the moral high ground when your club's future is already assured and playing the remaining games at neutral venues is of no real consequence.

Dropping into the Championship is bad enough in a normal season, but with no income from gate receipts due to current restrictions, it could potentially bankrupt some clubs.

Yeah but you have to take into account that nearly all vfpl managers are seasoned fpl veterans so you will need to cast the net a bit wider when you are swimming with sharks.

I could see an argument for top 50 maybe but top 100 is a rounder number and i have at least some chance of making that threshold. 😉

    2. Ragabolly
      • 14 Years

Most managers in vFPL are indeed very active, motivated and experienced. That's why I've mentally set the bar at top100 myself. But maybe top50 is more mathematically justified, not sure 😀

Of course you should always aim for number 1 Gink but obviously not everyone is going to attain that greatness.

It's actually getting harder and harder every season to get into that prestigious top 10k bracket as amount of managers in the game now is huge along with all the resources that are easily accessed these days.

I would put more value on a manager finishing in the top 50k now than someone finishing just inside the top 10k from lets say 10 seasons ago.

      2. Dr. Agabuse
        • 11 Years
        3 years, 10 months ago

        That is simply not true.
When I was in the top 10 a couple of season ago, iwould have needed a strange miracle to happen in order to get to 1 but only a decent score to let me finish in a 1digit position.

I would have needed 5miracles to come together, avoid every alternative but look for alternatives to alternatives and make up 55pts or choose that finishing within the top 10 is better than top 50.
now i didnt manage both but having a top12 finish still makes me proud and i like it far better than having a top48finish.

(Also i was insanely unlucky to drop out as i was the only one in that mould with Ramsey and he hit the crossbar twice in the last 5mins, which would have pushed me thru, haha memories)

Which guy? If it's Keane they were a different type of player. Losing the league is never down to one moment. If Rogers had the defensive mindset then that he has at Leicester he would have won that league. Too careless at the back and reliant on Sterling, Sturridge and especially Suarez for results but not a team to choke out a draw or a win if neede.

          Scholes.

Liverpool's title challenge in that season was down to SAS brilliance as opposed to foundations laid by BR. Ultimately it was his ego, naivety and lack of know-how which is why Liverpool didn't win the title. That Gerrard slip isn't the sole reason he didn't win the title but of course it's the only thing people can use against him.

I always find it bizarre that there's more discussion about Gerrard from other clubs as opposed Liverpool themselves. Seems like Liverpool fans have moved on but United fans haven't and mention it all the time, for whatever reason.

Yet the perception is that Liverpool fans are unbearable. What a world we live in.

Do you honestly think Fergie would have preferred to have Stevie over Roy?
If he ever really wanted him all's he had to do was ask Roy to take him out of his pocket.

Keane and Gerrard were complete different players. Fergie would've displaced Scholes and formed a Gerrard-Keane MF.

From the article you sent btw

'There were two stipulations for Gerrard’s side. He could not include two players who represented the same club or the same country.'

                Hardly an endorsement.

Keane and Gerrard were complete different players alright, just look at the honours record and it will tell you that.Hard to see how Stevie would have displaced Paul unless it was at the very end of his career as Paul was the best midfielder of his generation to come out of England.

It's not as if the stipulations limited him that much in Roy's case as he was the only Irishman and out of all the great players United had over the years Roy was the only one he picked.

From the horses mouth......."Roy Keane No 1. The rest? They’re all different,"
Stevie even recognizes Scholes as a better footballer.

I think we will know before the deadline. After the gw38 deadline they will either immediately process the gw as usual (coin toss in cup matches etc.), or they will leave the gw open for more matches. So the decision has to be made this week, and hopefully they will let us know.

No, we will know for sure after the deadline next Sunday. If they process the gw as normal, declaring a winner in the official fpl cup through coin toss, then they won't add any games to gw38. Seems reasonable they will at least let the cup finalists know beforehand.

You can if you like. You can always cancel it up into an hour before the first game. I’d have hoped (but not necessarily expected) we’d have some clarity by then.

I'm going legalese with you, partly because it'll be fun.

From the rules "Deadlines are subject to change and will be 1 hour before the kick-off time in the first match of the Gameweek."

So you may well prove to be right, I don't dispute that. But also FPL Towers could change the gameweek start point at any time before next Sunday and we won't be in a position to complain.

Wow you are a gambler! lol . You're even relying on FPL moving the deadline after Sunday has passed! Ironically, if they do that doesn't that defeat the point of playing your bench boost now? If they move the deadline to 1 hour before deadline you can wait. No need to take the gamble.

Could happen. But the ‘zero points in GW38’ argument is based on a rushed bit of communication by FPL, so I wouldn’t swear by that - it seems more an unconscious bias that people have which makes them think that way. They’ve also stated in the rules that the overall season finishes in GW38, so if they add more gameweeks they’re going back on that statement. I don’t think they can win based on their less than clear communication.

    Just a thought...

Pending the hopeful FPL announcement this week to what's happening prior to GW38 deadline, if the real PL does get resumed, it's possible for all the games to be in a giant GW38, as technically GW's only end when the next one starts, and in this case it will be GW1 of next season - whenever that'll be. I've got a feeling adding extra GW's might be quite a lot of work, in terms of game programming etc.

However there are many issues this would raise, particularly to those who've used their BB, as that's the obvious chip everyone would need with this scenario.

Given the rumour that the PL could allow 5 subs per game during the run in, then FPL could follow suit and give everyone a BB for GW38 to level the playing field a bit, and make it interesting, even though you'll only be a spectator given you wont be able to make any changes once the deadline passes.

Obviously those of us who still have the BB chip up their sleeves will be up in arms with this but maybe FPL could calculate the average points benefits the various chips (BB, TC, FH) have been this season and basically credit your team accordingly for any unused chips.

FPL could also do something about Captain/VC picks, given you can't change anything after the deadline. Maybe if your captain gets dropped/banned/injured at any point, you're VC automatically takes over, until if/when they return.

I know it's impossible to please everyone, but surely a massive 'hands-off' GW38 would be more fun than pulling the plug altogether, if that's the alternative...

It's a game with 7 million players. It simply has to continue if the premier league does.

Surely it's not that hard to pretty much copy and paste the code for a normal gameweek and add on gameweek 39, 40, 41, 42 etc

I have always said that there should be a definitive date set for when it's safe to resume, and once you have that then work out what to do. If we're back by September (I'm talking hypothetically, I think this is too soon) then it makes more sense to can this season and have a full one next year. If we're back in February then it makes more sense to can next season and finish this one. If we're back next September then can 19/20 and 20/21 and have a full 21/22 season, etc etc. And FPL goes with whatever happens to the EPL.

Although I also suspect that there must be a cut-off date (some say it might be June 30) where EPL/UEFA etc have to make a decision for the 19/20 season. In which case finishing this season at all would be a long shot. I don't know if this is the case, it would be sensible but there are an awful lot of players involved so not sure.

Resuming this current season in the spring of 2021 might be okay for the PL, but almost impossible for the lower leagues. Clubs won’t be able to afford to renew contracts at the end of June for half their players who won’t play for the next 9 months.

Also I’ve not really seen it discussed but has European competition been official cancelled this season with the French and Dutch teams declaring null and void seasons?

Germany resume next weekend. I think this will have a big impact on England wanting to restart. England have an opportunity to watch Germany play 'guinea pigs' for a bit to see how they set up for it and how it goes for them.

Yes. This. Even though Germany have been much more successful at controlling the virus, the restart seems too soon, and with the news from Dresden, were already a disrupted fixture calendar.

Ha! Your knowledge of the lower leagues always impresses me!

For me it seems 95% of people are looking at the restart based of Liverpool and then top four implications. Then a few more are talking about relegation and Villa having a game in hand.

No one is talking L1/L2 who won’t have a first team after June 30th when all their contracts expire, I suppose they could go on rolling contracts if we have a calendar by the end of June? But it seems that overly complicated.

The 'fair' way to mirror any restart imo will be to add extra GWs if their format both allows it and they have the collective will and ability to do it - and only they know that. They may eye the revenue in these troubled times but what are the costs involved to them?

If they go mega 38 they will get dogs abuse for their 'zero points in 38' statement, let alone deal with the fall out from players getting potentially 10 BBs/TCs. To me that just makes a nonsense of ranks, MLs, cups and season histories (as a BB chip holder). Not in the spirit of the game imo.

They will I think secretly be hoping there is no restart and they can end it from their end next week. If this happens I would be disappointed if the FPL season was not scrapped from records because there is way too much unfinished business to justify a rank.

I've been looking at the same team with VVD and Zaha (13.4m combined) but with Snodgrass who's 0.6m cheaper than H.Wilson but I'm still 0.2m short with the cheapest possible bench.

So coming up to the GW38 deadline, the "last" deadline of the season the most recent info we have from fpl towers is:

'What happens to the postponed fixtures?

It is the Premier League’s intention to reschedule the postponed fixtures only when it is safe to do so.

Points scored in these fixtures will apply to the Gameweek in which the fixtures are played.

We will make a further announcement on any fixtures scheduled for after 17 May, 2020.'

So my question is... who is playing chips this week if we don't get the pertinent information prior to the deadline...?

I can't see this 'mega GW38' happening. It would give people with BB and TC such a huge advantage as to render the previous GW's almost pointless (forgive the pun).

I think they'll either call time on the game for this season or add extra GW's once an announcement is made by the PL.

Assuming we don't get any new info from FPL pre-deadline I'm not playing a chip, based on the below. All copied and pasted from the FPL statement:

      GW38 Sun 17 May 14:00 BST

Given each fixture in these Gameweeks has been postponed, all players will earn zero points.

Managers must also be aware that any transfers made, or Wildcards or chips played in a Gameweek where all the fixtures are postponed will not be reinstated.

Personally, I feel the game might just end next Sunday.

I would agree that this has to be the hot favourite.

All this worry about FPL might be for nothing anyway! The Premier League looks far from certain to resume. Guess we should have a clearer idea in the next few days.

I have said from the word go the season is likely to be voided. And you thought Denial was a river in Egypt!

Boris tonight then PL meeting Monday. That will be it in terms of information so Id expect FPL to have between Tues-Sat to offer some clarification for the integrity of the FPL site.

FPL Towers have kind of covered themselves here. Given that these fixtures have been postponed, as per the rules postponed or abandoned games score no points, so they are correct. But they make no mention of when or where the reinstated games will go from these and other postponements. These games (should they go ahead, which for the record I doubt) will then score points, and they still can currently go either in GWs 37 or GW38, because these gameweeks haven't finished yet.

Playing devils advocate - Is there anywhere that says they can't put them in a previous game week? What's to stop them putting them all in the original game weeks they was due to take place? Surely that's the same rationale.

Lol. I'm simply pointing out that if you think fixtures can be added to GW38 after the deadline has passed why not any other game week? I actually agree, I don't think fixtures can be added in once a game week has passed. So what's your thoughts in where the postponed fixtures would go?

I'll let the Doc answer too but my two penneth is they can still add them in 37 (while it's still open) or 38 (which has tended to stay open until all fixtures are completed) - because that's what they did with Man Utd v Bournemouth.

I don’t consider the Utd game to be the same at all. That game was already part of that game week.

So - let's be clear - the 10 games this season that have now been postponed but were originally part of GW38 - you think it's ok for those to stay in GW38? Because schedule-wise that is an identical scenario.

I don’t actually because the circumstances are totally different. With what FPL have chosen to do they’ve basically cancelled(/blanked) all remaining game weeks. I see where you’re going but I just think it’s a totally different situation. That was one slightly postponed fixture. It’s not comparable.

Well, the Man Utd/Bmth fixture is all I've got to go on. Seems identical to me with respect to GW38 games like Palace v Spurs but I understand I can't convince you of that because I'd admit the circumstances around why and when the games were postponed are different, so we are breaking new ground. But it still seems the default position for FPL is that GW38 is the final gameweek for overall ranking (that bit is in the rules) and because of that, feel that GW38 will continue until all matches have been played, as that has happened in each and every season so far. Unless we hear differently prior to the existing deadlne.

You’re correct. If FPL don’t adjust anything at all then they could just throw all remaining 80 odd fixtures into GW38 and just take how people's teams were set up next Sunday for scoring. I can’t help but feel that’s one of the more unlikely scenarios though. But I’ll accept there’s a chance. I’ve never said there wasn’t to be fair.

It would be hard for them to justify putting a rearranged game for (say) June 30th into a gameweek that went from the 14th to 20th March. They could , I guess, it's their game. Wouldn't see them look too good in the credibility stakes.

I agree but I just wanted to make the point there are lots of gaps in the rules. They could do a lot of weird and controversial things. I mean, they've kept the game running with now fixtures for weeks! Why didn't they delay all deadlines GW30 onwards!!? That's one thing I thought they could do - move game week deadlines.

Yep - I did mention that before but that ship has sailed now as people have made multiple transfers since GW29 - If you bundle them all into a GW30 then you're looking at a lot of people with unfair points hits. But they can still move the GW38 deadline as I've mentioned elsewhere - that's in the rules. Daft though it is as the current situation is not really why that rule was created.

I feel that theyre gonna have to abandon at this tage and i fear that they will give United the last CL place despite Sheffield having a game in hand vs Villa (was it at home too?) that would have put them above United and given them CL which would have been soooo cool

Points per game is higher for United so there isn’t really any rationale for putting Sheffield above Man Utd despite the game in hand.

Then you’d have to look at difficulty of all remaining games to calculate an expected points totals for the season and United has the easier fixture run based on performance of opponents so far in the season.
