Newcastle’s 5-1 mauling of local rivals Sunderland in Gameweek 10 has so far proved a turning point for both sides. While Steve Bruce masterminded the Black Cats to a revival which saw them go the next four undefeated, recording wins over Stoke and Chelsea, Chris Hughton’s Newcastle have slumped alarmingly.

Today’s 3-1 defeat at the Hawthorns was his side’s third defeat in the last five and since putting 5 past Sunderland, they have scored just 5 more goals in the 6 league matches that have followed. Andy Carroll has scored 4 of those goals and assisted the other for Peter Lovenkrands at West Brom today. That stat, above all others, emphasises just how much the Magpies are relying on their big centre-forward…

Defensively alarm bells are also ringing. Following the superb 1-0 win at the Emirates that immediately followed the win over Sunderland, Newcastle have conceded 8 goals in their last couple of away games. That’s a trend that they have to stop or risk being sucked into the relegation mire.

Next weekend’s home encounter with Liverpool is followed by three away trips in four, at Birmingham, Spurs and Wigan. That list of opponents could be worse but clearly, Chris Hughton has work to do ahead of that run. He has a defence that’s conceding goals and an attack that looks impotent and over-reliant on a rather obvious “Plan A”.

Injuries and suspensions have not helped matters. With Kevin Nolan sidelined, Hughton has searched in vain for a reliable partner for Andy Carroll. While Shola Ameobi has fulfilled that role in flashes, he has struggled to maintain his form. Hughton appears to have little alternative but to restore Kevin Nolan up in support of Carroll once his skipper is fit. Newcastle’s passionate following want a 4-4-2 and a more attacking outlook, but Hughton seems restricted by resources; a January hunt for a striker looks on the cards.

Andy Carroll’s goals have meant that Fantasy Managers may well have been oblivious to Newcastle’s decline. The striker, owned by over 50% of Fantasy Premier League sides, has continued to deliver points and fully justified his generous price tag. There will however, be a growing concern about just how long Carroll can going on carrying the burden for scoring the goals to keep Newcastle’s head above water.

Today’s brace from Watchlist climber Peter Odemwingie (priced at 5.1) with the inevitable FPL Bonus to follow, demonstrated that there is even stronger value available elsewhere. If Newcastle continue to struggle and Carroll begins to falter, we could yet see the North East number nine abandoned.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    60 points minus 4 = 56 points this GW. How's that?

Regret taking a hit for Pederson and then Ferguson gets 3BPs. Lost me 3 points but at least i've got Pederson for the next few GWs without haven't to waste a transfer.

Yeah y r right and I got 1BP Yuhuuu :))) To bad for Nasri captaincy, change it in Saturday morning, but it was a good decision for that 4 point hit, cause Barton missing.

Next GW is gonna be huge regarding captaincy choice. Good luck to all.

I think I am gonna have a punt on K. Davies, one assist and 3 BP will do it.

          Cheers,

I'm thinking Torres in for Drogba as Liverpool have a good run of fixtures but I really like Drogba as he can score against anyone. As for Malouda, if Gerrard is guaranteed back for Newcastle he would've gone by now.

I'm thinking of shipping Drogba out and Bent is under consideration. However, he didn't look great today and was subbed after 75 mins - Gyan looked much more of a threat. On the plus side, I heard a stat stating Bent had scored half of Sunderland's league goals since he's joined (might not be the case now)

My midfield/forwards this week have scored consistently okay.
    Scores of 7, 6, 5, 5, 5, 2
I think each week its about getting one high points scorer as it makes all the difference.

Lads have you noticed that this year there is plenty of budget mids that are doing the job: Brunt, N Zog, Adam, MGP, Etheringhton so maybe is better to have 3 of them in your side and the other spots for captaincy material choices like Nasri, VDV and Nani and use the cash in differential defense and 2 expensive strikers.

What do we think shall we recompose our strategy is half season after all. It looks like 3 5 2 is the best formation or 3 4 3 with benching one mid every GW.

    Am I onto something or..??
    Opinion appreciated,

    Chers,

To be fair, there have been plenty of budget forwards playing well too in Carroll, Elmander, Davies, Odem etc.
I aim to have 2 budget mids and 1 budget forward and build my team around that - at the moment its Brunt, NZog and Carroll. I don't see me getting rid of those 3 any time soon.
