Newcastle’s 5-1 mauling of local rivals Sunderland in Gameweek 10 has so far proved a turning point for both sides. While Steve Bruce masterminded the Black Cats to a revival which saw them go the next four undefeated, recording wins over Stoke and Chelsea, Chris Hughton’s Newcastle have slumped alarmingly.

Today’s 3-1 defeat at the Hawthorns was his side’s third defeat in the last five and since putting 5 past Sunderland, they have scored just 5 more goals in the 6 league matches that have followed. Andy Carroll has scored 4 of those goals and assisted the other for Peter Lovenkrands at West Brom today. That stat, above all others, emphasises just how much the Magpies are relying on their big centre-forward…

Defensively alarm bells are also ringing. Following the superb 1-0 win at the Emirates that immediately followed the win over Sunderland, Newcastle have conceded 8 goals in their last couple of away games. That’s a trend that they have to stop or risk being sucked into the relegation mire.

Next weekend’s home encounter with Liverpool is followed by three away trips in four, at Birmingham, Spurs and Wigan. That list of opponents could be worse but clearly, Chris Hughton has work to do ahead of that run. He has a defence that’s conceding goals and an attack that looks impotent and over-reliant on a rather obvious “Plan A”.

Injuries and suspensions have not helped matters. With Kevin Nolan sidelined, Hughton has searched in vain for a reliable partner for Andy Carroll. While Shola Ameobi has fulfilled that role in flashes, he has struggled to maintain his form. Hughton appears to have little alternative but to restore Kevin Nolan up in support of Carroll once his skipper is fit. Newcastle’s passionate following want a 4-4-2 and a more attacking outlook, but Hughton seems restricted by resources; a January hunt for a striker looks on the cards.

Andy Carroll’s goals have meant that Fantasy Managers may well have been oblivious to Newcastle’s decline. The striker, owned by over 50% of Fantasy Premier League sides, has continued to deliver points and fully justified his generous price tag. There will however, be a growing concern about just how long Carroll can going on carrying the burden for scoring the goals to keep Newcastle’s head above water.

Today’s brace from Watchlist climber Peter Odemwingie (priced at 5.1) with the inevitable FPL Bonus to follow, demonstrated that there is even stronger value available elsewhere. If Newcastle continue to struggle and Carroll begins to falter, we could yet see the North East number nine abandoned.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Why have you mentioned on more than one occasion tonight that you 'had a report to complete?' Is it to make you look important? I mean, you wouldn't post on here saying 'missed the game today, I had to fill in a job aplication form, or I had to visit my Gran.'
      Odd.

Unsure whether to dump VdV this week. Having held off this week my squad could probably handle another week without him playing. There hasnt been any great info on his rteurn date although I heard a rumour he would be back after the Chelski game.

If I kept VdV i fancy dumping Boswinga this week. Any thoughts on his replacement? My personally choice was Nelson.

    Current defense is Simpson/Konchesky/Boswinga/Coleman/Bardsley

Bwaaaaaah stuffed to the gills with Guinness stew, and just after spending a frustrating hour trying to undo the worlds most tangled christmas tree lights.
Now where was I, oh yes, Carroll is great Balotelli isn't. 🙂
Tempted to get the Yak back for next gameweek, is Saha badly injured? Noticed Everton went downhill performance-wise after they dropped the Yak. Possibly because I'm bitter - I got him in for him to score one week, get an assist the next then dropped. Boo to Moyes.

Trick is to heat it up quick without looking at it, tastes better the next day. If you can get it Oyster Stout made by the Porterhouse in Dublin works even better than Guinness, stronger taste.

I put food out for the birds last year they crapped on everything, the car, the house, the washing, the bloody lot but still it is a pity to see them so hungry but why didn't they go shit away from my house and I was feeding them top notch bird feed - just didn't seem right then having them shit on my car and house.

Newcastle have Barton,Nolan and their 2 first choice centre halfs to come back. They wont go down this season. IMO!
You have to remember that the bet Arsenal 1-0 at the Emirets and drew with Chelsea. They are a very entertaining team to watch and will definately saty up this season.

His luck will run out though... He did nothing against Chelsea and West Brom, just a horrible defensive error and a handball have gifted him points.

If Dean had correctly disallowed the goal and the end then I reckon a lot more people would be considering getting rid. Newcastle, and Carroll, were awful today. A cheeky handball at the end of the game doesn't change that.

Carroll is 2nd top points scorer in the game. 'Nuff said.

Then again he is owned by almost everyone... and I would like a front three of Rooney,Tevez & RVP/Torres when RVP & Rooney inevitably hit form, which would leave no room for Crazy Horse Carroll. Hopefully he will get injured or a 3 game ban to make the decision for me. For the time being he's going nowhere though

They've got some likeable players but in my view if you look at player quality on paper Wolves is one of the very worst teams in the Premiership.

Ward, Berra, Stearman, Jones, SEB, even Foley

These are all players getting a lot of minutes and they're far below the Premiership average in ability.

Im thinking Tevez to Torres this week, then Drogba to Tevez the following. May seem like a waste of a transfer but im willing to lose the 0.3 in value.

I'll love that. I don't want to buy Everton players but he keeps scoring.

Drogba is hanging onto his place in my team by a thread.

Bad form, bad fixtures, bad hair.

The only thing keeping him in is there aren't many better prospects elsewhere.

    Anyone thinking of Rooney?

Ive Drogba and i am also considering getting shot of him but the fear is that the big useless bollocks will score a hat trick against the pourous utd and arsenal defences
