Newcastle’s 5-1 mauling of local rivals Sunderland in Gameweek 10 has so far proved a turning point for both sides. While Steve Bruce masterminded the Black Cats to a revival which saw them go the next four undefeated, recording wins over Stoke and Chelsea, Chris Hughton’s Newcastle have slumped alarmingly.

Today’s 3-1 defeat at the Hawthorns was his side’s third defeat in the last five and since putting 5 past Sunderland, they have scored just 5 more goals in the 6 league matches that have followed. Andy Carroll has scored 4 of those goals and assisted the other for Peter Lovenkrands at West Brom today. That stat, above all others, emphasises just how much the Magpies are relying on their big centre-forward…

Defensively alarm bells are also ringing. Following the superb 1-0 win at the Emirates that immediately followed the win over Sunderland, Newcastle have conceded 8 goals in their last couple of away games. That’s a trend that they have to stop or risk being sucked into the relegation mire.

Next weekend’s home encounter with Liverpool is followed by three away trips in four, at Birmingham, Spurs and Wigan. That list of opponents could be worse but clearly, Chris Hughton has work to do ahead of that run. He has a defence that’s conceding goals and an attack that looks impotent and over-reliant on a rather obvious “Plan A”.

Injuries and suspensions have not helped matters. With Kevin Nolan sidelined, Hughton has searched in vain for a reliable partner for Andy Carroll. While Shola Ameobi has fulfilled that role in flashes, he has struggled to maintain his form. Hughton appears to have little alternative but to restore Kevin Nolan up in support of Carroll once his skipper is fit. Newcastle’s passionate following want a 4-4-2 and a more attacking outlook, but Hughton seems restricted by resources; a January hunt for a striker looks on the cards.

Andy Carroll’s goals have meant that Fantasy Managers may well have been oblivious to Newcastle’s decline. The striker, owned by over 50% of Fantasy Premier League sides, has continued to deliver points and fully justified his generous price tag. There will however, be a growing concern about just how long Carroll can going on carrying the burden for scoring the goals to keep Newcastle’s head above water.

Today’s brace from Watchlist climber Peter Odemwingie (priced at 5.1) with the inevitable FPL Bonus to follow, demonstrated that there is even stronger value available elsewhere. If Newcastle continue to struggle and Carroll begins to falter, we could yet see the North East number nine abandoned.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Not something I'm going to change immediately, I'm just thinking long-term...

    A) Vidic and Nasri

    B) Bardsley and Fabregas

Long term, not just while Fabs is out. Can Nasri really keep up this form even with El Capitano back?

It a regular occurrence that his performance tallys off when fabs in the side, i probably would still keep him as fabs might not be totally 100% for a while, just avoid captaining him.

yeh but fab hasnt been 100% and is prefering to play deeper. If fabs plays his usual self then i can seriously see nasri being affected. As i said its best to keep him and see how fabs plays it.

Nasri has also improved much this season, and therefore it's hard to draw too many conclusions from what has happened earlier.

What we know is that he loses some set piece duties and that Fab is likely to steal some bonus points. More than that is hard to know.

'If fabs plays his usual self then i can seriously see nasri being affected'

Why? Surely having Fabregas back to his best will just make Arsenal score more goals....

Before this season (and even earlier this season) i would have said yes, Nasri will usually suffer when Fabs plays.

However, he has really come into his own lately, and his display this weekend was pretty awesome, hard to see him just vashing into the background from where he is now. Im not getting rid any time soon.

A few thought rearding price rises etc...
For the last few (disastrous) weeks i have done early transfers to beat price rises as I have been unnecessarily worried about losing value etc and then not having a great priced team , but it has..
    a. lead to mistakes due to unforseen injuries (Fabregas ins and outs) and cancellation (Rooney this week)

    b. I have realised that it is really not needed this season. All the big expensive players are underperforming/injured and there is a plethora of mid to low priced options coming and going week to week. Nani, Nasri, Carroll, etc.

    c. this leads me to keeping the Drog, as he is underperforming, BUT, I have no major use for his money elsewhere at the moment and know he will kill me the week I take him out.

    d. I think at this point in the season it would be wise to delete totalfpl from my browser and only look t it for the next wildcard.

If was more a tactical change than anything to do with protecting Dunn. We were 2-0 up, Wolves had made a couple of attacking subs so we switched from a 4-4-1-1 (with Dunn playing in behind Roberts) to a 4-5-1 with Mame Diouf coming on to play from the right wing and Emerton shifting in field to form a central 3 with Pedersen and Jones. Dunn simply can't play centre mid in the Premiership anymore

Gw17: Drogba and Elmo to Kyrgiakos and Torres
    Gw18: Carroll to Odim
    Gw19: Cahill to Vdv
Gw20: Bent to Tevez (depends what form Tvez and bent are in)
I think it seems good on paper but of course its not definate but just a teamplate of what i'm thinking.
    Thoughts?

    Rate my team

    Foster (Mignolet)
    Baines, Sagna, Ridgewell (Elmohamady, R.Johnson)
Nani, Cahill (C), Malouda, Parker (Adam)
    Piquionne, Carroll, Elmander

      3/10 I how I rate it.
Mignolet doesnt play any more leaving you stuck with Foster
Sagna overpriced in a defence that rarely keeps CS
      Elmo has been dropped
Ridgewell Johnson and Foster is tripling up on Birminghams defence, not a great idea.
Cahill is about to go to the Asian cup
      Malouda isnt doing anything
Parker I dont like for the FPL
      Forward line very risky.

Its a really tricky season, do you still have the wildcard? If not no major worries the January one is only a couple of weeks away. More than half a season to go so plenty of time to reverse it.

If I didn't already have Nani and Vidic then I'd look at Rooney more seriously... But having 3 Utd players (who you basically can't bench) for ARS, che isn't cool.

I'd definitely upgrade Piquionne to one of Rooney or Torres...

I'm not buying Rooney for just one week. No sir... Torres vs Big Sol could be a massacre, and Rooney could easily do nothing against Arsenal.

That's the best thing about Utd - Arsenal games. There's usually a load of goals but it's impossible to say which way they'll go. Saying that Rooney, Berba and Nani vs that defence should be a slaughter. 3-0

Well at the time I was hyped/excited/sad etc that is was ending and i loved all the build up and it was pretty emotional on the finale and people were quite negative but when I think about it people didn't have a point, some of it did seem a bit last minute, thought up on the spot with no ending thought up and so many unanswered questions, just seem they bottled it. Would like to watch it all again from the beginning tho.

I agree it does oooz class and from what iv'e seen its good. Its just too slow paced for my liking. I couldn't watch more then one episode at a time, unlike 24 where i would watch half the series in one night haha.

I think 'slow' is the wrong word though. The pace of the show, in terms of what you get per episode, is perfect IMO. Don't get me wrong, you're left wanting more, but at the same time you're satisfied with what you've got. Shows like Lost and 24 leave you desperate to see what happens next week, and often several episodes in a row don't actually develop the story much.
