The FPL players who could change position in 2020/21

The relaunch of Fantasy Premier League for 2020/21 will see the usual price swings for various players based on last season’s performances but will also feature positional reclassifications for a handful of them.

In this article, we’ll outline the case for a change of position for a number of Fantasy assets.

Ten players were reclassified at the beginning of last season, including Diogo Jota, Ayoze Perez and Matt Ritchie.

It’s fair to say that the alterations could be more seismic this summer, with a few premium assets potentially moving from midfielder to forward or vice-versa.

Before we begin, we should stress that this is purely guesswork on our part and is based on how FPL have gone about classifying players previously.

It could be, for example, that they have other ideas on how they will group ‘wide-midfielders’ next season – although, given the short turnaround, a complete overhaul of the game perhaps looks unlikely.

As a very rough guide, FPL have previously classified players using the following criteria:

DefendersCentre-backs, full-backs, wing-backs (eg in a 3-4-3/3-5-2)
MidfieldersCentral/defensive midfielders, number tens, wingers/wide-midfielders, players on either flank of a front three
ForwardsLone strikers, strikers who play in a two-man attack, the central striker in a three-man frontline

The classifications are typically based on what each player in question has done in the previous season.

Marcus Rashford and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, for example, had spent most of their time centrally in 2018/19, hence their listings as forwards at the start of the campaign just gone.

There is the occasional high-profile error (more of which below), of course, but these tend to be either academy products or fringe players from promoted clubs who were perhaps not given as much attention at the launch stage.

David Luiz will definitely not be classed as a defender next season, if there is anything fair about this game.

There will be a new classification for him and Jones.

      LIABILITY

And defenders of the team will get a one goal cushion

You get David Luiz © in your starting XI but you get an extra £10m to spend on recovering his losses for the rest of your team

That is why he should not be a midfielder. There should be no obvious picks in FPL, IMO.

He won't be an obvious pick if he's priced appropriately. You can't classify someone based on their output and not their position.

If mid they have to price him 11.5 at the very least. But I dont trust FPL Towers to do that. If they change his position, they will leave him at 10.0 or sth. Which would be utter BS.

12.0 as a mid would be a fair price. Same as Mane, 0.5 less than Salah/KDB, same or 0.5 more than Sterling.

I agree. I'd go something like KDB/Salah at 12.5, Auba/Sterling at 12, Mane 11.5, Bruno 11, Rashford 10.5. It ensure mean that difficult decisions have to be made. Which should be the goal when pricing players.

don't think it matters, as long as he's priced accordingly

That said - there will be no strikers left at this rate. I still think it should be 'forwards' and all the modern forwards like Salah and Mane get thrown in with the Kanes and Jimis. Let us put 4 'forwards' in the squad and 4 mids instead of 5 and 3

      Salah

There's no consistency here. Salah, Sterling, Son and Rashford all play wide positions in a front 3. So they all need to be the same positional classification in FPL. FPL Towers can't classify these players differently, as it would just mean uncertainty and lack of consistency. Whether they are Mids or Forws is a different debate though.

Exactly. I honestly see Auba being classed as a mid next season. Martial as a fwd as well as Richarlison. Probably Greenwood as a mid. Jota will most like go back to mid as well.

The consistency is based on Shots In The Box.

The fact that Sterling and Salah are so high in the SITB stat shows they are playing as forwards. You can call Salah's position whatever you want.

But his SITB suggests he is a forward.

I agree that would work for a more complex fantasy game, but FPL isn't like that. It's wide ranging attraction is It's simplicity. If you go by stats, where does it end? TAA as a mid? Ederson as a defender as his touches are probably mostly in that area? Kane plays deep, so is he a mid? The only simple way of classifying players is by position played. For FPL that means in a 442, both of the 2 are Forwards. For 433, the central of the 3 is a Forward and the wide 2 are Mids. It has to be a consistent system for the "masses" to understand.

If they were setting up from scratch I personally think the best thing would be for all players that play in a front 3 to be forwards, but that’s a BIG change to make when it contradicts the previous policy so it can’t really happen. The issue for me is that everything is getting a bit out of whack as you really need to get as many of the attacking mids in your team as you can, and there is very little use/room for genuine mids (KDB the obvious exception). Forwards are getting less appealing and there seem to be far less viable options.

      1. Greek Freak
        • 8 Years

I agree with this. Front 3 need to be forwards, but it won't happen since it's a big change. What will happen is Auba and Rashford as mids, which makes things worse... At least there will be Martial as a decent premium forward choice.

        1. FOO FIGHTER
          • 4 Years
          3 years, 7 months ago

          Some suggesting Martial at 10.5.

Not sure how decent that is when he would need to make up quite a bit of points mid > fwd.

I would in that case prefer having Rashford at 10.5 in midfield.

Having 3 UTD is also going to be a big push with some overpricing them.

I don't think I'd be interested in 3 United - it was very easy to have them at the end of the season with Martial and Bruno under 9 and Greenwood at 4.5, but next season is a different proposition.

I'll probably just get Bruno for the penalties now.

So wing backs would then become mids?
Are we looking at starting position, or based on heat map position?
Alonso/ Doc would probably be classified as forwards then lol

Exactly. It's far too complex for FPL and many casuals would lose jnterest, which FPL clearly wouldn't want. It might work for us "experts", but FPL isn't targeted that way.

Not necessarily but your point is valid as it’s the same issue and FPL Towers need to call it the right way. The problem is that lots of teams adopting either wingbacks or a front 3 are counter to the way FPL is set up as you effectively end up with players that don’t completely fit in either category. Maybe wingbacks with 3xCBs should be mids as they have a license to bomb forwards, but I’m less convinced about that compared to the front 3. Ultimately you’ll always end up having to draw the line somewhere, and it’ll never be perfect, but in my opinion the situation with Salah, Mane, Sterling, Rash, etc. is getting ridiculous and needs sorting. They’re forwards and I think that’s pretty obvious to just about anyone.

No. But I do have guesses!

      Aubameyang - 11.0
      Rashford - 10.0
      TAA - 7.5
      Robertson - 7.0
      VVD - 7.0
      Gomez - 6.0
      Antonio - 7.5 (and he won't be worth it 😛 )

      No idea about Pulisic.

I don't know - 17 goals, 177 points, possible (occasional) penalties, nailed on in a top team, I'd be surprised if he was less. It was a big jump in output from his previous season so a jump in price is justified.

      Auba 11

Looks good, except Antonio seems high. I wouldn't buy him for more than 7.5 as a mid or 7.0 as a forward. FanTeam had him at only 6.5 (!) but I'm guessing he'll be a 7.5 forward and I'll pass on that.

Not necessarily. Going 3 talismanic budget strikers up top and rotating between them based on fixtures to play a 442 would work as well.

That sounds like too much money on the bench every week, especially in a season when the budget will be needed for all the premium mids (and there will be a lot of them).

My 3-5-2 would be 3 nailed defenders and 2x4m, 5 mids, 2 budget strikers who'd be transferred frequently according to form and fixtures and a 4.5 no-hoper.

Possibly Che Adams as cheap forward option. Seemed to find his feet a little at end of the season, might have needed time to adjust to PL. Southampton a reasonably good attacking team.

Keita for Liverpool could be a decent option but he'll probably be at that awkward price (5.5/6) where he's too expensive for fodder and will take up valuable mid and/or Liverpool slot in people's teams. Could see him getting 6-8 goals and assists over the season each if he nails down a starting place.

Everton have bid £18m for Real Madrid's 23-year-old Spanish left-back Sergio Reguilón.

The offer is expected to spark a flurry of activity for the 23-year old, who was voted the best left-back in La Liga last season.

      (Source: Sky Sports)

Juventus are set to beat Manchester United in the race to sign Raúl Jiménez.

The Italian champions are in talks with Wolves over a deal that rises to €80m for the Mexican striker.

      (Source: AS)

PSG have submitted a €30m offer to Bayern Munich for Liverpool target Thiago Alcântara.

Negotiations are now underway between the different parties.

Perhaps it would be a good idea to split defense, midfield and attack. For example, there would be 3 central defenders and 2 wingers. There would be, for example, 2 defensive midfielders and 3 offensive. There would be 1 center forward and 2 wingers.

Tammy, cho, rlc etal don't get much of a look in now. With 3-4 superstar signings, they might play reserve and cup games only. If it were any other youngsters, they might be looking at a way out. Pogba, Gomes, sancho- the list is long.

Reading in the guide that every wide player in a front three is classified a mid, it is clear to me that this whole positional debate is coming from a failure from FPL towers to make the difference between wide mids and wide forwards.

Yet, it is rather intuitive and there is no need to look at heatmaps to make the distinction, simply look at the stats and the roles players have in their teams. Salah and Mané are the main goal threats for Liverpool and the most advanced players in their team, it is obvious they should be forwards. Same goes for someone like Richarlison, who actually plays in a front 2 now and has played as a lone striker in the past.

I think the issue is that FPL Towers are afraid this would bring too much confusion as it could lead to situations where wide players in the same front 3 would not have the same position (Sterling as a forward and Mahrez/Bernardo/Foden as mids for example), but in France we have a very popular fantasy game called "Mon Petit Gazon" in which players are classified based on their roles rather than their position and the pool of options is more balanced that way. It is not perfect and there are some disputable classifications too, but it is at least a more accurate representation.

It's becoming more and more apparent with each passing year that the personnel who make these distinctions at FPL HQ aren't the sharpest tools in the box. Too many howlers to be accidental.

Forwards should be classified based on their shots in the box (SITB).

Compare Mane's SITB to Salah's. It is pretty obvious Salah plays as a forward and Mane as a winger (i.e. midfielder). Same with Sterling (forward) and Mahrez (winger). Same with Martial (forward) and Rashford (winger).

Name one of them? If you look at the top two or three players for each team with the highest SITB, it is usually the forwards.

Even Firmino is one of the highest for SITB and that guy doesn't score goals.

if you could have said top 1 of each team is the forward, then he is a forward, but top two or three means he is not a forward according to your theory.

        2. LE CHARO
          • 4 Years
          3 years, 7 months ago

Totally disagree. If Mané does not have many SITB, it's because unlike Salah, he shoots when there is a decent chance of scoring. But his main role in the team is to score goals, not to play near the touchline and send crosses or provide width (even if it's part of what is expected from him). Rashford falls in the same category, he's on the wing for balance reasons and because his profile makes him useful when he's in the half-space, but he's obviously a forward. The number of SITB has nothing to do with it. What we need to look at is whether the player is more of a goal threat or a creator of chances.
