Newcastle’s 5-1 mauling of local rivals Sunderland in Gameweek 10 has so far proved a turning point for both sides. While Steve Bruce masterminded the Black Cats to a revival which saw them go the next four undefeated, recording wins over Stoke and Chelsea, Chris Hughton’s Newcastle have slumped alarmingly.

Today’s 3-1 defeat at the Hawthorns was his side’s third defeat in the last five and since putting 5 past Sunderland, they have scored just 5 more goals in the 6 league matches that have followed. Andy Carroll has scored 4 of those goals and assisted the other for Peter Lovenkrands at West Brom today. That stat, above all others, emphasises just how much the Magpies are relying on their big centre-forward…

Defensively alarm bells are also ringing. Following the superb 1-0 win at the Emirates that immediately followed the win over Sunderland, Newcastle have conceded 8 goals in their last couple of away games. That’s a trend that they have to stop or risk being sucked into the relegation mire.

Next weekend’s home encounter with Liverpool is followed by three away trips in four, at Birmingham, Spurs and Wigan. That list of opponents could be worse but clearly, Chris Hughton has work to do ahead of that run. He has a defence that’s conceding goals and an attack that looks impotent and over-reliant on a rather obvious “Plan A”.

Injuries and suspensions have not helped matters. With Kevin Nolan sidelined, Hughton has searched in vain for a reliable partner for Andy Carroll. While Shola Ameobi has fulfilled that role in flashes, he has struggled to maintain his form. Hughton appears to have little alternative but to restore Kevin Nolan up in support of Carroll once his skipper is fit. Newcastle’s passionate following want a 4-4-2 and a more attacking outlook, but Hughton seems restricted by resources; a January hunt for a striker looks on the cards.

Andy Carroll’s goals have meant that Fantasy Managers may well have been oblivious to Newcastle’s decline. The striker, owned by over 50% of Fantasy Premier League sides, has continued to deliver points and fully justified his generous price tag. There will however, be a growing concern about just how long Carroll can going on carrying the burden for scoring the goals to keep Newcastle’s head above water.

Today’s brace from Watchlist climber Peter Odemwingie (priced at 5.1) with the inevitable FPL Bonus to follow, demonstrated that there is even stronger value available elsewhere. If Newcastle continue to struggle and Carroll begins to falter, we could yet see the North East number nine abandoned.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Probably been done a million but only just saw it, should that be a Carroll assist really? I don't mind as I have him but seems dubious.

It's all in the rules, oose...

"If a goalkeeper does not have control of the ball and parries a shot or drops a cross or the ball rebounds off the woodwork, the attacking player shooting or crossing the ball receives the assist if a goal directly ensues. "

      🙄

England had the best bid. Easily.

The vote to give it Russia was more a vote against giving it England than giving it to Russia. If you can't see that then you are clouded. But we know that anyway.

Nah just AP thinks im "a lunatic" who is "mentally unstable" cos of this view which you know kind of cross's the line.

Nice to see a view who agree is all.

Saw this nice stat aswell today. Kind of backs it up:
            "
            Tournament Hosts:

Germany: 2 World Cups, one European championship
Italy: 2 World Cups, 2 European championship
England: World cup, one European championship
France: 2 World Cups, 2 European championships
            Spain; World Cup, European Championships
Switzerland: World Cup; European championship /co-host
            Belgium: two Euros
            Holland: European championship/co-host
            Portugal: European championship
            Yugoslavia: European championship

Russia, the winners of the first ever European championships and the runnes-up in two Euros, have never hosted any meaningful international tournament. "

Huh? There are reasons why a country like Russia haven't hosted a major competition. You need a visa to set foot in the place, the media are gagged and the police are criminals on the take, are just three reasons.

All I'll say is if nothing else, you know and I know that the verdict was not fair play. It was twisted corruption and bad feeling that made the result - thats what makes it such a bitter pill to swallow, overall we had the best bid and scored highest in their suitability criteria.
The reason you are getting peoples backs up (well mine anyway) is that we are all immensely disappointed, in fact downright gutted that none of us will be likely to go and see a World Cup held in our own country. Its a heartbreaking realisation for me, who admittedly was really, really excited about the chance to go and see it. I dont want to go to Russia particularly, and I've been to Qatar and its underwhelming to say the least.
We're all gutted and having someone being a smart arse about it is not making anyone feel better. Sometimes maturity and being the bigger man comes from holding back kicking people when they are down.
              That's my thoughts anyway.

Theres a difference between being a smart arse and putting together a few reasons why Russia go the world cup

Which to some who seem to believe Eng should have got it and therefore any view to the contrary is a dig at Eng. Its not. I havent bated or slagged anyone over Eng not getting it.
Merely giving the view that another nation had a viable case to win the tournament and alot of people who yes indeed are corrupt also thought the same.
Ask youself have i mocked, laughed at you for not getting it? no

My only view was that is wasnt that surprising somebody else got it.

English Irish American French Italian all the time all over this site.
You seemed to have this warped view that im anti english because

                    2. I correctly predicted early last year based on football reasons that england would struggle in the world cup. Mainly due to an outdated 4 4 2 and lack of real quality players.

If i was a bigot as you say all id say is
"england are crap haha " like you say to the city and arsenal fans here every week.

Its comfortable for you to call me a bigot because then you can dismiss the idea i can rationally believe that other nations legitimately won the bid

Russia isn't the same country as the USSR.

It's also a police state that murders journalists with an appallingly high rate of racist killings which aren't properly investigated.

Lovely place for a football tournament. Can't wait.

If they only give the World Cup to the countries with the most big stadiums each time, England would be hosting it every other cycle. There has to be more to the decision than that.

A Russian world cup is gonna be cool.

By the way, my favourite bit of the fallout has been the "...they lied to our Prime Minister, our future King and David Beckham. How dare they?!"

But there has to be more to the decision than "ooo, that'd be a interesting place to go".

If that's what they are basing it on, then it's a disgrace to allow us to spend millions on the bid and give a brilliant presentation if they had no intention to give it us.

Yeah, there is more to it than that, they have to do a good job of proving they'll be ready, and the Russians must have done that. They're not going to vote for a country who they don't believe can put on the World Cup, no matter whether you think the votes were just to spite England.

Everyone knows you also have to be a bit dodgy to win a World Cup vote, as well as have the nice powerpoint. If we all know, then the England bid team must have known and they didn't play the game right. They would have known this before pumping millions in, so I think it's a bit hypocritical to moan about this now, when they knew what they were getting into to start with.

We might have thought that, but without knowing it we had to bid. Almost to say right, I dare you not to give it us despite the quality of our bid.

It wasn't a level playing field and we all know it.

Of course they knew what they needed to do. That's why Beckham ran a soccer school in Trinidad & Tobago, England played Brazil in Qatar, all these things that grease the wheels and a whole lot more. The guy behind the England 2006 bid said they were approached by someone who said 'how much will you pay for our vote?'. Quite correctly, they turfed them out at the time, but they will have known the lengths that countries will need to go to to win the vote.

That's why I think it's hypocritical to moan about corruption now. It's wrong, of course, the World Cup should mean more than bungs and bribes and things should change- but the England bid team knew the rules everyone was playing with when they entered the game. After all, England have been doing 'you scratch my back' deals with their votes in the past. Not enough backs were scratched this time.

"The rules everyone was playing with"?

If you're disingenuous with your vote, you can't complain if others are disingenuous with their's...and you also can't say 'they were cheating more than us'!

That's what I mean above about being hypocritical. I totally agree that the process is currently bollocks- each vote should be made independently (and increasing the number of voters means it's harder to individually swing or influence votes)- but I don't think I'm going to get any acknowledgement of my point, so I'm going to bed.

A reason why FIFA gave Russia and Qatar the next two World Cups (not the only, but a reason):

They sit in the centre of the time zones. So on a global scale, no one will have to get up at ridiculous hours to watch the games.

What happens with people trying to book travel and accommodation in advance. Optimistic England fans were in a bit of a mess when they booked to stay in one place for the second round, not expecting England to finish second in their group.

the two stadiums I mention are a long way off the rest of the stadiums as it is. Why should they have to travel so far?

Captain choices are extremely hard to find, and Tevez away at West Ham is possibly as good as it was going to get. Now, we're going to have to take a punt on a ManUtd player at home against Arsenal.

He has scored everytime he's started for us in the league this season. He had a mare of a first half today, once he scored the goal though he was brilliant, got man of the match at the game, looks a really good signing!

Just watch and see how he does, interestingly I said the other day if he carries on playing, I'll punt on him if in need of a cheap midfielder.

      Why?

He's not shown any sort of form and hasn't scored from open play yet. What's he done to warrant a 11.4m investment?

+1 I aleady him but am wary of all that money on a guy who may... or may not. Either way, I'll keep him for the L'pool's fixtures in the coming weeks. Hopefully SG's return will help matters.

    Hi all,

Looking to get some attacking Liverpool cover for the next few weeks as i have none at the moment.

Cant really get Torres unless I get rid of Tevez which I dont really want to do unless I have to.

Was thinking Van der Vaart -> Gerrard but don't know if this would be the best option.

Any help would be appreciated, Team is linked.

    Thanks in advance!

He's playing deep as a holding midfielder, if he starts playing behind Odemwingie then yes but I doubt he will. He'll get assists but I'd wait and see, obviously if he stays a regular in the team at 4.7 or whatever you can't really go wrong.

Not going to do it yet, but I'm thinking of Barton to Ethers (ugh). I've wanted rid of Barton for a while, too much Newcastle with Carroll as well, and he seems to be injured.

Ethers has Blackpool at home, and is bang on form, just a short term move before I get someone like Nzog / Brunt / Albrighton.

      Good idea?

Can anyone confirm, is Tevez suspended? He's got his 5th yellow in the league this weekend, but has he already served a suspension in the cup or something?

Anyone here Savage's comment a second ago? 2 shocked (fat) woman after Jonas kicked the microphone and Savage said after (Don't know if we were meant to here....

"Gore, they've got some weight on em, ay?)

      Prick.

I dont find that offensive. There is a difference between an undeserved prejudiced view and stating something that is factual correct.

I don't find it offensive, just out of order humiliating someone on national TV, you might say it off air, but its the fact he did it in front of a lot of people. Robbie Savage is still a prick, regardless

I think he said 'Core, I've put some weight on haven't I' as one of the looked a bit like the large female version of him.
