Premier League fixture list published as Manchester clubs blank in Gameweek 1

The fixture list for the 2020/21 Premier League season was published this morning and Fantasy Premier League looks set to kick off with a Blank Gameweek 1.

Manchester City and Manchester United will both start the season a week later following their exploits in European club competition.

Their scheduled opponents on the opening weekend, Aston Villa and Burnley, will also begin their campaigns in Gameweek 2.

Chelsea and Wolverhampton Wanderers were in Champions League and Europa League action earlier this month but, although they have been handed a bit of an extra breather, their first fixtures still fall within Gameweek 1 and will take place on Monday 14 September.

Liverpool and Arsenal take on newly-promoted Leeds United and Fulham in two of the most eye-catching fixtures in the first round of 2020/21 matches, with Chelsea away at Brighton and Hove Albion.

Early-season interest in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m) may well be short-lived, with the Gunners facing Fulham and West Ham United before meeting four of last season’s top five and Sheffield United between Gameweeks 3-7.

Liverpool also have a mixed start, with the visit of Marcelo Bielsa’s side followed by clashes with Chelsea and Arsenal.

Manchester City get their season underway in Gameweek 2 with a trip to Wolves, with visits of Leicester City and Arsenal to follow in Gameweeks 3 and 5.

Their cross-city rivals meanwhile follow up their Blank Gameweek 1 with a more appealing fixture against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford, with matches against Brighton and Hove Albion, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United coming next.

Spurs have a decent start: they have six meetings against sides that finished 10th or below in their opening seven fixtures, with Championship runners-up West Bromwich Albion then up in Gameweek 8.

Wolves’ run of matches from Gameweeks 3-7 also stand out, while Chelsea will be quietly pleased with their initial schedule aside from a Gameweek 2 clash with Liverpool: the Blues take on Brighton, West Brom, Crystal Palace and Southampton in the opening five Gameweeks.

West Ham United may well be the team to avoid in the opening two months. After a favourable opening-weekend clash with Newcastle United, the Hammers then face six of last season’s top eight in quick succession.

We’ll be back later today with a more detailed inspection of the best and worst fixture schedules.

Our Season Ticker has been updated in the meantime, with Fantasy Football Scout subscribers able to sort by difficulty, attacking and defensive potential and rotation pairings.

Also check out Porstmouth Bubblejet’s fine work in identifying the clubs that rotate home and away fixtures in 2020/21.

  10. Home and Away Rotation Pairs
    Portsmouth Bubblejet

Here are the 38-game home & away rotating pairs for the 2020-21 season.

Each club has one team with whom they always rotate home-and-away. Some pairs are allocated due to close geographical proximity, others purely for reasons of timetabling expediency.

    Arsenal – Spurs
    Aston Villa – Crystal Palace
    Brighton - Leeds
    Chelsea – Fulham
    Leicester – Burnley
    Liverpool – Everton
    Man City – Man Utd
    Sheffield United – Southampton
    West Ham – Newcastle
    Wolves – West Brom

For FPL managers, this means that you can pick a cheap defender from (say) Sheffield United and Southampton and be sure that one of them will always have a home fixture. Owners of key Man City and Man Utd midfield assets will likewise always have a captaincy option with a home fixture.

These home & away rotating pairs obviously need to be combined with an analysis of the difficulty of opponents faced in each fixture. It’s also unclear whether the absence of fans in football grounds due to COVID-19 has diminished the importance of home advantage.

Has anyone ever actually made sustained effective use of rotation pairs? I'm guessing No.

No, rotation is a busted flush as an FPL concept, and has been for years now.
It's about as relevant as boot-cut jeans.

        4.5/ 4.0 GKs

4.5m defenders from the teams you fancy to do well, ignore H/A rotation and deal with any selection dilemas in any given GW and move on without a second thought if you bench a 6 pointer.

        • 7 Years

Yes. BUT nothing to do with H/A rotation.

        All to do with:

        1) Avoiding teams in the Top 10 (Liv, City, Utd, Che, Ars, Spu, Wol, Eve, Lei)
        2) Maximising home fixtures

Also, you have to be willing to make transfers every 6-8 GWs. There is no one rotation pairing that works over a whole season. But in blocks of 5-8 GWs, with transfers you can make it work.

My most successful was a few years ago with BHA and WBA (Dunk and Dawson).

West Brom and Villa also have near perfect home fixture rotation. I like the Johnstone + Nyland (or Heaton) cheap keeper combo for fixtures and save points.

If (and it’s a big if) home advantage isn’t going to be as big an advantage this season, with the stadia at reduced capacity, has anyone considered rotation pairings based on top half/bottom half of the table fixtures? Any idea how to get that info?

My early thoughts to potentially get an edge, though not without risk!

Start with one of KDB/Bruno on the bench.
Bring the other one in after GW1 for whoever looks worse out of Salah/Auba.

Don't think many will have Bruno + KDB for which GW2 so could get a big advantage from that!

I quite like this idea. I want Fernandes in GW 2 for sure. So either he starts on the bench or I plan an immediate transfer (less appealing)

My takeaway from this first GW is that there are no standout fixtures, that I am currently discounting the "play the fixture" model of team building. The friendlies this Saturday will inform more.

    Only interested in first 4.

    So...

City - blank, wol, LEI, lee
United - blank, CPL, bha, TOT
Chelsea - bha, LIV, wba, CPL
Liverpool - LEE, che, ARS, avl
Spurs - EVE, sou, NEW, mun
Arsenal - ful, WHU, liv, SHU
Wolves - shu, MCI, whu, FUL
Southampton - cry, TOT, bur, WBA
West Ham - NEW, ars, WOL, lei
Leicester - wba, BUR, mci, WHU

Honestly, I don't think there's a super standout team. Chelsea have pretty good fixtures other than Liverpool. Arsenal as well, similar. Not loving Liverpool's fixtures that much, and City don't have a great start either. Leicester, Southampton and Wolves have strong fixtures overall.
