Newcastle’s 5-1 mauling of local rivals Sunderland in Gameweek 10 has so far proved a turning point for both sides. While Steve Bruce masterminded the Black Cats to a revival which saw them go the next four undefeated, recording wins over Stoke and Chelsea, Chris Hughton’s Newcastle have slumped alarmingly.

Today’s 3-1 defeat at the Hawthorns was his side’s third defeat in the last five and since putting 5 past Sunderland, they have scored just 5 more goals in the 6 league matches that have followed. Andy Carroll has scored 4 of those goals and assisted the other for Peter Lovenkrands at West Brom today. That stat, above all others, emphasises just how much the Magpies are relying on their big centre-forward…

Defensively alarm bells are also ringing. Following the superb 1-0 win at the Emirates that immediately followed the win over Sunderland, Newcastle have conceded 8 goals in their last couple of away games. That’s a trend that they have to stop or risk being sucked into the relegation mire.

Next weekend’s home encounter with Liverpool is followed by three away trips in four, at Birmingham, Spurs and Wigan. That list of opponents could be worse but clearly, Chris Hughton has work to do ahead of that run. He has a defence that’s conceding goals and an attack that looks impotent and over-reliant on a rather obvious “Plan A”.

Injuries and suspensions have not helped matters. With Kevin Nolan sidelined, Hughton has searched in vain for a reliable partner for Andy Carroll. While Shola Ameobi has fulfilled that role in flashes, he has struggled to maintain his form. Hughton appears to have little alternative but to restore Kevin Nolan up in support of Carroll once his skipper is fit. Newcastle’s passionate following want a 4-4-2 and a more attacking outlook, but Hughton seems restricted by resources; a January hunt for a striker looks on the cards.

Andy Carroll’s goals have meant that Fantasy Managers may well have been oblivious to Newcastle’s decline. The striker, owned by over 50% of Fantasy Premier League sides, has continued to deliver points and fully justified his generous price tag. There will however, be a growing concern about just how long Carroll can going on carrying the burden for scoring the goals to keep Newcastle’s head above water.

Today’s brace from Watchlist climber Peter Odemwingie (priced at 5.1) with the inevitable FPL Bonus to follow, demonstrated that there is even stronger value available elsewhere. If Newcastle continue to struggle and Carroll begins to falter, we could yet see the North East number nine abandoned.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Doherty is perhaps the worst Australian Test bowler I can ever remember having the pleasure to watch.

Quite possibly... Did you see Stuart MacGill bowling against the West Indies, in what turned out to be his last ever test match? It was pitiful, he was just laughing by the end of it, and it prompted his retirement.

So that was probably the worst I've ever seen an Aussie bowler bowl, but Doherty is awful, no doubt.

I didn't see MacGill's last Test. Didn't see him bowl much at all actually, as I didn't have Sky until 2005 and he didn't bowl in England much.

He had a better strike rate than the great SKW though. One of those stats that just sounds like it must be wrong.

Basically their is this girl, Cher, who Cowell absolutely loves, presumably because he thinks she'll sell records. So he's done everything in his power to ensure that she makes the final.

Firstly they increased the number of acts in the final from 3 to 4, because Cowell knew there are 3 acts more popular than her, and she wouldn't make it otherwise.

And then this week, all week they said that the act with the lowest number of votes would leave, the host said on the show on Saturday, it said it on the website and Louie said it on Irish etc..

Then come tonight, the rules have changed, presumably because the golden girl Cher was polling last, and the decision was put in the hands of the judges who had to choose between the bottom two acts. So they inevitably saved Cher, even Dannii who has never liked her, but was presumably under instructions from Cowell.

So basically they weren't transparent with the millions of voters and changed the rules at the last minute to suit themselves.

Probably Definitely not worthy of a complaint, but that little gypo makes me so angry it's unreal. She's completely deplorable, but Cowell and his merry band of idiots do everything to make sure she stays in the competition.

It's pathetic (from me) I know.....

Unfortunately if you like the Xfactor, then you are Cowell's puppet already, so you can't complain. Even if you are right about it being a fix.

He made it, so he can make the rules. Don't like it? Don't watch it. Simple 🙂

But people have voted in their millions on the assumption that the act with the lowest act would go home, and they just change the rules at the last minute... That isn't right.

      Do this:

Click on Carroll > History. It's amazing and all for 5m.

I'm not convinced by Torres or Rooney yet, it'd be a risk to bring in either. Wait and see how Torres does tomorrow anyway. Rooney needs a few more games I reckon.

I know the stats mate but having watched the last 2 Newcastle games i think he's fortunate to have 11 points. Even back to the Bolton game he hasn't quite looked as dangerous, perhaps why he hasn't picked up any bonus points in a while (although Newcastle being poor is the main reason) although admittedly BP are no way to judge a players contribution!

I'm just having a play around on the transfer page and didn't even know i could do those transfers. Looks nice as well with Tevez, Torres and Rooney up top 🙂

    Team:

    Foster (Krul)

    A. Cole, Ferdinand, Alcaraz, Jara (Kolarov)

Nani, Nasri, Pedersen, N'Zogbia (Van Der Vaart)

    Drogba, Carroll (Tevez)

Potential moves (one at a time):

    Alcaraz > Jagielka/Samba/Kyrgiakos
    Drogba > Rooney/Berbatov/Torres
    Van Der Vaart > Bale/Kuyt

I'm thinking Alcaraz needs to go, but all the good defensive teams for the coming run (Blackburn, Liverpool, Sunderland) are all playing away this week, and I dislike how my back 5 doesn't have equal balance. The only good team that rotates well/has good fixtures over the next 5 is Everton, and I'm not too keen on Jags or Distin because they're pricy.

I got rid of him last week, and I stand by it. He's not going to play every game and could be dropped this weekend for Anichebe.

I don't want a rotation risk in my team, not with this hectic run of fixtures.

I'd definitely hold fire on the VDV transfer, he could well be fit for Sunday. I'm still waiting to do the opposite transfer, Bale > VDV once he returns to fitness.

I watched Kuyt closely last game, v Spurs. Played on the right wing as part of 442 and was doing a lot of defensive work. Possibly because of the threat of Bale. Definitely worth a watch tomorrow night, mind.

Like you say, Blackburn and Liverpool have good fixtures and should hopefully keep a few CS so definitely worth investment, especially as there are some cheap options.

Alcaraz is playing Everton away this week. I have Gohouri and I'm extremely concerned about the Wigan defence at the moment. I'd keep Drogba, because at least he's starting at the moment. VDV, however, won't be back till at least after Boxing Day.

It's a bit of a no-brainer for who gets traded out IMO.

I don't actually agree. My theory is that you want a keeper from a team that don't have attractive (not like that) fantasy defenders. If you have Robinson it makes it a bit more tricky to get Samba, Nelsen or Jones who are all great value defenders who pick up attacking/bonus points.

This is sort of my problem.

I have Foster and Robinson which has been going great which is why I haven't changed either yet. But I kind of want one of their respective teams defenders as well but don't want to double up.

Just think about defenders you want to get before you hit the transfer button.

I had Foster and Robbo, but sold Robbo for Krul when they stopped rotating well. Wish I'd kept him, much better option than Jaask I reckon.

Owen Coyle plays quite an attacking game, it's not like Bolton under Big Sam anymore, much fewer clean sheets.

You don't want to be changing your keepers around too often, and I think with Robbo and Foster you'd have 2 reliable options. Hart and Sorensen worked OK last year, similar to that I reckon.

Should we have an extra 'official' poll or two on the site every week on the current 'hot-topic'?

For instance the predictions for difficult to call game, if a major player gets injured a poll for the best replacement, etc.

from a FPL perspective, general consensus is that someone will score a lot of points. If it's a United player, I'd bet on Nani, if it's an Arsenal player, then Nasri or RVP.

From a footballing perspective, United fans think United will win, Arsenal fans think Arsenal will win and the rest is relatively split.

An extra weeks rest, and if Wigan can score 2 against stoke with Boselli upfront! Stokes defenders are big oafs, they'll struggle with the movement of Dj, Varney and co.

true, but they were away in that one. stoke are on form and far more solid at home, plus blackpool are known to collapse away. 1 or 2 weeks off shouldn't make too much difference either. I can see 3-1 stoke.

As cliche as it sounds, Broad has bowled better than his figures show in the first two tests.

When Lampard returns, would it be sensible to bring him in, loose Drogba and look for an alternate striker given his recent form?

    Idea for Sky's cricket coverage...

Before each ball flash up a little diagram of the outfield with the fielding positions.

    Also, bring back the run-box.

He's not protected now, can drop any time depending on his daily trades out.
