Newcastle’s 5-1 mauling of local rivals Sunderland in Gameweek 10 has so far proved a turning point for both sides. While Steve Bruce masterminded the Black Cats to a revival which saw them go the next four undefeated, recording wins over Stoke and Chelsea, Chris Hughton’s Newcastle have slumped alarmingly.

Today’s 3-1 defeat at the Hawthorns was his side’s third defeat in the last five and since putting 5 past Sunderland, they have scored just 5 more goals in the 6 league matches that have followed. Andy Carroll has scored 4 of those goals and assisted the other for Peter Lovenkrands at West Brom today. That stat, above all others, emphasises just how much the Magpies are relying on their big centre-forward…

Defensively alarm bells are also ringing. Following the superb 1-0 win at the Emirates that immediately followed the win over Sunderland, Newcastle have conceded 8 goals in their last couple of away games. That’s a trend that they have to stop or risk being sucked into the relegation mire.

Next weekend’s home encounter with Liverpool is followed by three away trips in four, at Birmingham, Spurs and Wigan. That list of opponents could be worse but clearly, Chris Hughton has work to do ahead of that run. He has a defence that’s conceding goals and an attack that looks impotent and over-reliant on a rather obvious “Plan A”.

Injuries and suspensions have not helped matters. With Kevin Nolan sidelined, Hughton has searched in vain for a reliable partner for Andy Carroll. While Shola Ameobi has fulfilled that role in flashes, he has struggled to maintain his form. Hughton appears to have little alternative but to restore Kevin Nolan up in support of Carroll once his skipper is fit. Newcastle’s passionate following want a 4-4-2 and a more attacking outlook, but Hughton seems restricted by resources; a January hunt for a striker looks on the cards.

Andy Carroll’s goals have meant that Fantasy Managers may well have been oblivious to Newcastle’s decline. The striker, owned by over 50% of Fantasy Premier League sides, has continued to deliver points and fully justified his generous price tag. There will however, be a growing concern about just how long Carroll can going on carrying the burden for scoring the goals to keep Newcastle’s head above water.

Today’s brace from Watchlist climber Peter Odemwingie (priced at 5.1) with the inevitable FPL Bonus to follow, demonstrated that there is even stronger value available elsewhere. If Newcastle continue to struggle and Carroll begins to falter, we could yet see the North East number nine abandoned.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Is there any indication at all when the Blackpool/ManUtd game will be re-scheduled, or if not, maybe someone has experience of when it's LIKELY to be?

Just looking to get a slight plan as to getting in one or two more B'pool or Utd players.

    Cheers.

I don't see it being any time soon tbh, the fixture list is at it's most hectic over the Xmas period, not much space for postponed fixtures to be played.

Fixtures should all be safe this week, weather has cleared for now.

Kosc has much to learn. The raw ingredients look good though. We can;t defend for crap. Bring on the Verminator.

He's (mostly) central to anything Blackpool do. I'm hanging onto him.

This I'm taking a long term view. Trying to keep chopping & changing to a bare minimum. Hence keeping players that haven't performed, like Drogba & Adam.

It seems to be paying off. At the moment anyway.

Where possible I try to address the weakest link in the squad. This can often be difficult, as you try to keep up with injuries/suspensions, the movers & shakers.

    Hey all,

Thinking about playing WC this week... Thoughts?

I'm thinking along the lines of Chelsea (Drogs/Malouda) being out of form and some tough fixtures, couple of defenders that are now rotation risks, and also looking at a stronger keeper combo for second half of season...

And also to look ahead at the busy xmas period and have a good squad in place for that run. Then the WC over the transfer period for the final run home...

Thoughts would be appreciated, I'm not totally convinced and unsure of when to play it!

Playing your wildcard now would be nuts. You have another one in 3 weeks time with a limited window, so if you can field a decent team until then I would save your first wildcard for later.

        Would it though?

I was thinking, with the other WC to use it right at the end of the window - 12th Feb.

That's 10 game weeks (which includes extra games over xmas) that I'd be playing it for and then the second one being play at GW27 which is 11 game weeks left...

It's the same scenario (re time frames) if you use it the other side of next one available...

I think it's good to have some Chelsea cover. At the moment Drogba/malouda is overkill though.

So I'm thinking perhaps one of Drogs/Malouda out as well as Elmo for a 4 point hit this week. That should get me a good 11 for the round and also a captain option if I drop Drogs...

That makes sense to me. Should be fine as long as you minimise hits until you play the "time limited" wildcard.

A lot of players would be very envious of anyone who had a wildcard to use with (let's say) 5 gameweeks to go.

          Including me. 🙂

Re who I'd bring in, not thought about it yet. I think better option perhaps would be Malouda out with Drogs on set pieces etc. I was just looking at a captain option up front by mentioning Drogs...

WC question: I buy a player for 7.5 and he goes up to 8.5 and then play my WC and sell him for 8.0, if I want to buy him back during my WC week, what do I have to pay?

    If that makes any sense!

      Makes sense.

      You'll have to pay 8.5.

It sucks. Basically, even with a WC, don't make a transfer unless you're sure.

    Potential transfers:

    Alcaraz > Jagielka/Samba/Kyrgiakos
    Van Der Vaart > Bale/Kuyt
    Drogba > Rooney/Berbatov

Thoughts? I'm leaning towards Alcaraz out, but only Everton are a decent defensive team playing at home this week, so I may just hold onto him.

Camsy, you hanging on to ACole? He has scored me nothing more than 2pts max since I brought him in for Sunderland game. Worst trsfr this year for me.

That said he should/could have scored this weekend.

I'm holding onto him because I have nowhere else for the money to go. I'd also be losing value on him, so unless someone pops up that looks like a really good option, I'm keeping him for the time being.

Baines is the only really viable option at that price range, and I don't know, but once Chelsea start keeping clean sheets again (and they will, they've only conceded one goal each in their last 3 games), Cashley will start getting those BPs which makes him so valuable. Patience with him I think.

Chucking all the Chelsea boys out won't pay off in the long run, I'm sure of it. They can't be so bad for this long.

I agree, I am just kicking myself for getting Cashley in so late and for the pathetic run Chelsea is having. Bad timing from my side.

I knee-jerked Nasri in. Classic noob move. I watched the Chelsea game, why wouldnt I when Ive got Drogba, Malouda, Cole, Cahill, and Coleman in the match? Saw the Malouda incident. Should have brought nasri in for malouda. Now i still have 3 chelsea players, poor form, shite fixtures. All because I got caught up to in my league by the 2nd place manager who captained nasri. Maloudas price has already gone down once. Damn I made a dumb hasty irrational decision. I should be a politician.

Thing about Elmo is that no matter how many goals Sunderland concede, it is highly likely he will return 1 point as he seems to come on as a sub for 5-10 mins. With him, you are assured of that point unlike a cheapie sub who plays the whole game, and concedes 2+ goals with the added risk of getting a yellow card = 0 to 1 points! Look at what happened to Coleman (1 pt) and Jose Enrique (0 pt) for example

      Food for thought 😀

In that case I would go for the cheapest possible defenders (Cech, STaylor, Simpson) and keep them on the bench for emergency use only which I presume is what you are looking for. They can also be played occasionally depending on fixtures etc.

I like Simpson better. More chance of cleanies. That said, if Djorou keeps up his form (when he has played), and Vermaelen comes back and brings some defensive stability, then I might buy him. 4.3 for an Arsenal defender would be a gimme. Although this is a bit long-term I'm thinking... About jan wild card. See if Djorou can nail down a starting place that his performances deserve.

Lol yea I know. Although I think we're okay compared to the league as a whole. 4th best goals against column. For us Arsenal fans though, if we're trying to truly compete, then we're comparing with Chelsea, Utd and it seems, City. And when you compare our defences to theirs, we get blown out the water. I expect it to be our downfall again this season (prolly starting next week).

I wish Song, for all his decent attacking runs/balls, would just shield the back 4. Arsenal attacks are the most entertaining in the league because either team can score from them. We are absolutely rubbish protecting against the counter.

Mainly. And he's a crappy defender that doesn't help Pools chances of a cleanie. And Pool can't keep a cleanie away from home. At least with Kyrgiakos/Konchesky, if you bench them it's not too much money rotting on the bench. Though if you have cash lying around doing nothing than I suppose he's the best Pool defender fantasy wise.

    Elmo out - Samba/Bardsley/Foley/Konchesky in
    Malouda out - Meireles/Cahill/Brunt/Etherington in

Got 2 suspended this GW and a couple that are out of form or now a rotation risk, so going to take a 4 point hit to ensure a good 11 this weekend...
