Pro Pundits - Tom

Identifying the non-‘big six’ clubs with the best early fixtures in 2020/21

One of the world’s best FPL managers, Tom Freeman (aka avfc82), looks at the favourable fixture runs of clubs outside the ‘big six’.

Though football in the COVID-19 era looks and feels different, home advantage is still a thing.

Yes, there has been a slight drop in home win percentage across Europe’s top leagues but the change is not large and, for most clubs outside of the elite, targeting wins at the location you know best still makes the most sense.

So, with this in mind, what I’ve tried to do in this article is identify the teams outside of the traditional ‘big six’ who have the best runs of consecutive, winnable home matches that we can tap into – the types of games managers will be earmarking for three points.

I’ll then offer my thoughts on the stand-out assets from each of the clubs discussed. You’ll notice that I’ve tried to ensure there are a few reasonable away matches thrown in too and that all of the runs I highlight start no later than Gameweek 6. At this stage, there seems little point looking too far ahead, but if it proves popular, it’s something I might revisit further down the line.

Also, because of the type of fixture runs I’ve focused on, I’ve removed games against last season’s Premier League top eight from my analysis, which is worth remembering when viewing the data.

        Mmm, hold up a bit.

Reece - by no means a sure starter as Azpi takes priority.
Justin - likely to lose his place with new defender incoming.
Vinagre - could be the same - bottom line - you have only two guaranteed starting defenders.
Foden - also danger of not playing; otherwise plenty 1-2 point cameos between proper hauls.

You could change Foden for a boring 5.5 and get nailed defenders. But you don't compromise, so .....

Reece is a question mark, Digne might be better after GW3 and want to check out EVE performance first.

Salah is out of form but he's template, Rashford is a waste of space for now and still question mark about anyone's healthiness right now as way too many begin to contract virus and face a 2-weeks-quarantine.

Foden facing too many competition I guess especially with Messi arriving, he might be playing lots in Carabao and later FA cup

Son-Kane is too much, Son-Alli probably better, but I'll go with Doc+Son. Ings is one to watch, he could do very well in the opening game

just a thought mate, good luck

Auba & Salah plays with measly FB's. Mostly one v one with their wing backs overlapping.

Werner won't get that freedom at #9.

Salah cuts in from his wing. Finding spaces in behind CB's.
You're trying to compare a wide forward with a Centre Forward.

If you're going with Werner, GL 🙂
Not saying he will flop. Saying there's a chance, big chance he will take time to adapt to physicality of PL

Werner scores more goals cutting in from the wing than in a centre forwards traditional scoring location. Check his heat map and shot map

Centre forward as he always has. But he drifts out wide and has the pace to make those diagonal runs. Like i said, his heatmap will explain it.

Go ahead, but I think for class strikers in recent times Auba and Kun are a good example. Dzeko too coming from bundesliga had a good first season. Forget that, with the kind of service he will get a fair few tap ins and pens too. You could use Falcao and Higuain as examples but the quality of service was nowhere close.

I agree there is every chance Werner will struggle to be prolific and also a fair chance he is not a nailed starter. As for examples of class strikers who have struggled see Shevchenko, Morientes, Falcao, Soldado, Forlan, Crespo, Morata, Rebrov, Kalinic, Jo, Kezman, etc

He is a quality forward, will get service and Chelsea is a decent attacking team. Can understand the love... You can say it's a punt. Loads of cash available due to absence of Manchester boys.

I'm 50-50, might get him as a Martial placeholder. Maybe not.

If you talk about someone being a placeholder then a longer term view is relevant imo. Especially if he can be regular with the goal output. Hes not streaky, hes known for consistency.

highly probable it'll ended up 1-1 but that's only 1 GW so no problem and either TAA or Robbo can sneak in 1 assist anyway and perhaps Werner or Havertz can score 1

How would you get in an Auba or Fernandes?

    4. Kobayashi

That's quite an expensive bench, imo. Digne may get attacking returns vs Spurs, he's the type of player you don't rely on for CS alone.

Isn't it worth getting Salah/Auba and then downgrading to KDB like others are doing? I know it saves a FT, but could leave you chasing early on.

    5. Nightrain_

      IMHO not a good gamble

no Salah is fine (TAA/Robbo is my choice too) but Auba and Chelsea I think is a must

don't bench KDB and Martial, nobody knows they're in fully fitted condition comes GW2, just fodder is enough.

Start with Ings/Jimenez and Son/Havertz/Willian and transfer one if you really fancy MUN vs Palace but I think one Martial is enough to start (if later he's declared fit)

Mitrovic is poor, don't fall into that trap
Vardy is way too expensive, start with Werner mate, the best bargain this year

      Good luck

    Too much on the bench?

    Ryan (Button)
    TAA Doherty Justin Vinagre KWP
Salah(OR Auba) Son Alli Soucek (Foden)
    Werner (Martial 4.5)

1M ITB to fund these transfers for GW2
    Salah(OR Auba) + Son -> KDB + Fernandes -4

I think something like this is what I need in order to not waste my wildcard very early on.

    Yay or nay?

    1. Kobayashi

I think it's 'slightly' risky but doable - but to have that much $ on the bench in GW1, only to plan a -4pt hit the week after, is inadvisable.

It could well pay off, but I think the general idea of benching players like Martial and Foden in GW1 is to avoid having to take a hit to bring them in during the following weeks.

    Would you rather

Start with Bruno on the bench and have a slot for a 6-7 forward

    1. Kobayashi

I'd rather have Bruno, as I prefer the 6-7m forward options at that price point.

    2. Andy_Social

I've considered that. No 6-7m striker worth having, so went for Martial on the bench - although my stand-in is 8m Alli. There's nothing in midfield for 6-7m either.

Yeah potentially. But not a fan of Ziyech to start as the PL is a big jump from Dutch league, he could take some time. And willian is a 50/50 starter imo, too many options - 3 out of Saka, Pepe, Laca, Auba, Willian will start.

Seems like people are going to be going hit crazy trying to shoe horn MUN / CHE / MCY assets after GW1 and 2 or weakening their GW1 squads to get them in early.

But given the number of high cost mids this season you can't have them all anyway. I don't see any reason why LIV / ARS / TOT assets can't outscore them in the first few GWs so I'll probably just set up heavy on those teams and look to slowly bring in value options from city, Chelsea and utd using FTs.

    1. Jay Arell
      • 6 Years

Certainly a viable option, although Utd vs Palace at home seems very tasty for a lot of managers. City vs Wolves not so much

This is true but only one fixture in the grand scheme of things and most managers are unlikely to have more than one utd asset anyway. Palace are also no pushovers. We'll see how it goes I guess!
