West Brom’s shortcomings bode well for Everton as Vardy defies the stats again

West Bromwich Albion 0-3 Leicester City

  • Goals: Timothy Castagne (£5.5m), Jamie Vardy (£10.0m) x2
  • Assists: Dennis Praet (£5.5m), James Justin (£4.5m)

No penalty box touches in open play, no shots in open play, fewer touches of the ball than West Bromwich Albion’s 69th-minute substitute Rekeem Harper (£4.5m) – no problem.

It’s now generally accepted that Jamie Vardy (£10.0m) doesn’t really do underlying statistics and assessing his Fantasy potential through cold numbers is a flawed approach.

Armed with a goal conversion rate that is consistently among the best in the division, the Leicester City striker possesses the admirable ability to be able to deliver an attacking return even when defences have kept him muzzled for 89 minutes.

Even by his standards, though, Sunday’s display at the Hawthorns was a quiet one and his 13-point haul owed a great debt to his role as the Foxes’ first-choice penalty-taker.

Both of his goals came from the spot, the first after he himself had been brought down and the second after James Justin (£4.5m) had been felled.

His only real sight of goal from open play came in the first half, when he broke clear of the hosts’ defence to test Sam Johnstone (£4.5m) with a stinging shot – only to be flagged for offside.

Stiffer tests await in the coming two Gameweeks, with two of 2019/20’s three best defences for clean sheets lying in wait, although he did score against Burnley and Manchester City in the corresponding fixtures last season.

Brendan Rodgers said of the 33-year-old striker after full-time:

Jamie is peerless. He’s super-cool, he’s clinical, you’ve seen his pace, he’s still got that running ability.

It’s a great start for him personally to score two goals and really good for the team.

BARNES LIVELY – BUT PROFLIGATE

Altogether more prominent was Harvey Barnes (£7.0m), who was responsible for almost half of the shots in the box that Leicester had.

With Ayoze Perez (£6.5m) struggling for match-sharpness down the right after a disrupted pre-season, Barnes looked lively – perhaps no surprise as he had racked up more minutes in the Foxes’ warm-up games than any of his teammates.

The familiar strengths and weaknesses were again in evidence, with the winger a threat with his driving runs and ability to get into dangerous positions but far from clinical when chances were presented to him.

Three opportunities went begging in quick succession on the 30-minute mark, with one of them classed by Opta as a ‘big chance’ that Johnstone repelled.

Barnes was then presented with another decent opening in the 78th minute, curling narrowly wide of the Baggies’ goalkeeper’s left-hand post.

Security of starts is sometimes an issue (he made more substitute appearances than starts in the Foxes’ nine post-lockdown fixtures) but this was a promising opening-weekend display from the young wide-midfielder.

MADDISON RETURNS

Having only recently recovered from a long-term injury, James Maddison (£7.0m) was among the substitutes for this Gameweek 1 clash.

The England international was thrown on as a 75th-minute replacement for the impressive Dennis Praet (£5.5m) and got quarter of an hour under his belt, as was the plan, according to Rodgers:

He’s moving much better now, he’s trained with the team this week. He’s obviously been out for a long period, he’s worked ever so hard to come back.

My idea was to get him on for 15-20 minutes, just to get some game-time in his legs, and he’ll feel better for that and motivated for next week’s training.

NO ISSUES FOR MAKESHIFT DEFENCE

Given that Leicester were without three of the four first-choice members of their 2019/20 backline either through injury, suspension or a summer transfer elsewhere, there was understandable trepidation about whether the Foxes could be as good defensively as they were last season.

In truth, it’s probably too early to say as they won’t face as many straightforward tests as this.

The Baggies made a bright start to the game, with Justin going into the book for a late tackle after 15 minutes as the hosts exerted some early pressure.

With only three shots in the box registered all game, and just two efforts of any variety recorded after half-time, Albion’s initial promise was short-lived and the pre-season concerns we had about a lack of goals from Slaven Bilic’s side became apparent.

Full-backs Justin and Timothy Castagne (£5.5m) showed willingness to get forward, at least, with the Belgian producing a Matt Doherty-esque dart into the six-yard box to nod in Praet’s cross and Justin’s penalty box presence leading to the visitors’ second spot-kick award.

Three at the Back

Having played a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 for pretty much the entirety of last season, Bilic sprung a surprise by naming a 3-4-3 on Sunday.

With the 4-2-3-1 perhaps too gung-ho at this level and a lack of central midfield options alongside Romaine Sawyers (£5.0m) and Jake Livermore (£5.0m) limiting his ability to operate in a 4-3-3, the Baggies boss opted for a safety-first approach.

It was a largely successful move at first, with Vardy nullified and the game still goalless at the break, but the Foxes became more and more dominant as the match went on.

Current and prospective owners of Everton assets will be eyeing up the Gameweek 2 meeting with West Brom with great interest and the space that Barnes was afforded might be a good omen for Richarlison (£8.0m), who occupied a left-wing role in the Toffees’ win over Spurs.

Bilic may have been hinting that he will stick with a wing-back system when interviewed after the game, mentioning that a reversion to a back four didn’t work:

Based on what we have in the team I wanted to be solid, I wanted to have numbers but also have our front players in a good situation when we get the ball and be positive on the front foot.

I think it looked really good up until the first goal. After that, because we wanted to equalise, we went to four at the back but unfortunately, it didn’t work good.

I was really pleased the way we played up until their goal. Let’s say up until the first goal it was a really good performance for us, with the ball and without the ball.

I’m very disappointed with the result but the biggest thing I’m really disappointed about is our reaction after the goal. Our mentality was not the same. It wasn’t the right mentality.

All of [the goals] looked stoppable. What we have to do is to stretch this 50 minutes to 95 minutes and then that would be a massive step for us. Because it looked really good against a really good side.

West Bromwich Albion XI (3-4-3): Johnstone, Bartley, Ajayi, O’Shea, Furlong (Harper 69), Livermore, Sawyers (Edwards 68), Gibbs, Diangana, Robinson (Robson-Kanu 60), Matheus Pereira.

Leicester City XI (4-1-4-1): Schmeichel, Justin, Ndidi, Soyuncu, Castagne, Mendy, Perez (Albrighton 67), Praet (Maddison 75), Tielemans, Barnes, Vardy.

I can only assume you've left that 1.5 itb exactly with the intention to do Son to Bruno, so just stick with the original plan and go for A

I wanted to see how Spurs and Son do against Everton and make the move if Son was playing too wide. Buy I liked what I saw from Son, taking shots, playing off Kane and on a few set pieces too,, he could do well over the next 5-7 GWs where the fixtures are much better than for Bruno.
Hence I am now in dilemma whether it's worth it.

I have both Bruno and Son. If I could only have 1 though, I would want Bruno over Son. I see the dilemma and having an extra FT is also a good thing but you do need a Man U player against Palace imo

    Considering an early WC.

Who scores the most points in each trio:
    1) Ramsdale/Pickford/Guaita.
    2) Egan/Keane/Saiss.
    3) Jimenez/Ings/Lacazette.
    4) Wood/Maupay/Wilson (what's the 123 in this one?)

I expected Keane/Mina to be first choice CB pairing at Everton. Does anyone expect Holgate to get in ahead of either of them?

"Bilic may have been hinting that he will stick with a wing-back system when interviewed after the game, when mentioning that a reversion to a back four didn’t work"

Interesting, didn't realize that switch was what caused them to go from average to absolutely horrendous. They were okay before, keeping Leicester at arm's length. Bilic has a massive task on his shoulders, also means Pereira and Diagana are worse options if West Brom aren't gung ho in the 4-2-3-1.

I struggle to understand who converted those 20 Pereira assists last season. Charlie Austin probably needs calipers to get onto the pitch, Robson-Kanu has always been gash and Callum Robinson isn’t much better. If they don’t buy Messi, I’m afraid they’re fooked.

PL survival is completely dependent upon goalscorers in your team IMO.
Those 1 points doesn't save you. Need those talismanic player's who'd get you sporadic 3 points.

Ok. Bissouma to be on the safer side I guess. United should score but if they go mental that 2 for Mitchell might become 1 or 0. I play in an extremely tight ML and even a single point counts. I won it last season level on points but having made lesser number of transfers over the season.

When you almost know a player is going to haul and can't get him it's not that bad 😀

Vardy is one of that cases. Hopefully he won't go on a run now. Martial should outscore him in next few gw's. Otherwise it's failed experiment of going without Vardy.

Barnes looked pretty dangerous. If his price drops he can be a decent option IMO.

I'm seriously tempted to make a move for Doucoure at £5.5m, good near side fixtures, and have a feeling he could replicate some of his better from his WAT days in this revamped EVE line-up, thinking he could hit 150pt seasons return...

if i were on a wildcard the first names i would be looking at premium options that are not highly owned that i think will do well - here are a few names with ownership numbers in brackets. i wouldnt be wildcarding into last weeks team, or filling it full of the highly owned template options - especially if looking to catch up.,. these players can easily explode and can get a march on the next wagons before they leave the station.

    Sterling (3.9%)
    Aguero (4.4%)
    Mahrez (2.0%)
    Rashford (5.2%)

    and to some extent
    Martial (12.8%)
    Pulisic (11.5%)

Aguero, Sterling are incredible differentials. Especially considering the way Raheem ended last season, he's my guy over KDB if he looks decent against Wolves. Like the Aguero (C) GW3 too

mindboggling some of those ownership numbers - problem is everyone is has overly optimised to last seasons total score.

Yeah, can easily jump to 30%+ after one, two double figure hauls. I plan on being on them before it happens.

only issue is they will likely do it quite quickly so the 0.3 max weekly gain will come into play.

Martial in. Not too crazy about Pulisic's injury record. Sterling is appealing, but is he worth going without KdB or a double up with KdB?

i did an analysis this morning of where i would captain a city player up until wk10 and it came out to be

wk3: possibly at home to LEI (although Werner @wba will probably win the poll)
wk4: definetly away to lee (ideal for sterling id say - high line).
wk6: definetly away to whm (away game)

so in answer to your question - i dont think they have the fixtures for a double up and the captaincy games look better for sterling imo (away games rather than home games, expansive rather than compact teams).

I'm not sure if Sterling will have the same discrepancy in home/away form this year, but agree with everything else you've said. Lateriser's table comes to mind, he's a brilliant flat track bully and double figures in both aren't out of the question.

Good-ish, but looked more likely to assist than score. Had a shot from outside the box that was kinda close. Richarlison stood out more.

Long range shots mostly. Definitely one to watch, especially with the kind upcoming fixtures.

    3. @persecuted_by_mods

Assist wise, he's relying on Richarlison to dribble and curl one in as DCLs movement wasn't too good. Long range shots he'll score a few curlers. Think people are prematurely getting him in but then again fixtures are excellent

Had a nice curling shot that just missed; absolutely fluffed his lines with a central shot from 10 yards out. I think he will only get better the more games he plays. Could be an absolute steal at 7.5, esp if he gets penalties.

Well we only know last year KDB became first choice and took them no matter who was on the pitch, eventually giving one to Sterling when he was chasing golden boot. Of course nothing is 100% but kdb seems best bet

I did similar swapped WIllian and VVD to Saka and TAA last minute. NIghtmare. That and moving Captancy from Salah to Auba has cost me 31 pts so far (also 'upgraded' Rudiger to Azpilipueta so watch out for a Rudiger goal later). Would have been TOP of the top10k any season league by 2 pts on Saturday night! lol

There's so many premium options this year, I feel there's not many options at the lower end of the price points this year especially with the reclassification of some players like Auba to midfield.

              For example
              KDB - 11.5
              Sterling - 11.5
              Bruno - 10.5
              Auba - 12
              Salah - 12
              Mane - 12
              Aguero - 10.5
              Kane - 10.5
              Vardy - 10

and none of them are worth the money without the armband (better options at 8.5-9.5).

so be careful not to put too many in your team - suspect 2 is optimal to cover captaincy, especially if suplemented with Werner then you'll have 3 distinct options.

These are the ones who could score points like 10m+ assets. The value will be in getting these players right:

                Rashford
                Werner
                Martial
                Pulisic

absolutely - add Son into the mix as well. great option over the next 7 weeks.

and value lower down at the moment looks like its at Everton (Rich, DCL, James, Digne) & Leeds (Ayling, Harrison, Klich) and potentially Greenwood/Foden at the big clubs if they nail a place.

                  How about an aggressive:

                  TAA to Digne
                  Alli to Rashford
                  Soucek to James

                  for a -8?

Yes I would make the move. Thoughts on these

                  1. Son/antonio to greenwood and richarlison -4

                  2. Antonio to wilson no hit

Would you lose one of TAA/ Robbo and upgrade ASM to James/Greenwood?

After 1 game, not sure I’ve lost all hope in my original team (which I’m sure you’ve poured over for hours)

Makes me laugh all the comments i have seen over a few posts about who is on penalties for Everton........they got 1 penalty last season!!

I know its a new season and all and they have a few more attacking players but still amuses me.

Even the worst teams are capable of getting 3-4 penalties (not necassarily but potentially) and 3-4 goals over a season does make a big difference in FPL, especially if it's a mid-priced or cheaper player.

                Alli...worth keeping or not?

                A. James R., FT
                B. Auba+Alli —> Bruno+Son/Rashford, -4
                C. Keep Alli

                -8 worth it?

                Doherty > Dallas
                Son > James
                Adams > Martial

Auba -> KdB now? I need the extra 0.5 cash elsewhere, and KdB seems to get a price before the deadline..

                Goal and Assist for Hendrick.

Do you think he will be good to get or ASM still a better choice?

                McCarthy, Nyland
                Trent, James, Vinagre, Justin, Ayling
                Salah, Bamayang, Havertz, Noble, Bissouma
                Mitro, Ings, Jimenez
                0.5 in the bank.

                Thoughts at the moment.
                1) Ings to Martial - keep it simple, get it done
                2) bring Mitchell in, love a 4.0
                3) See what happens with Chelski, Werner might be a must
                4) save a transfer
