Meet the FPL Manager – Graeme Sumner (Gregor)

Meet the Manager is back, as Joe once again catches up with a Fantasy Premier League manager with an outstanding track record of success.

This time Joe meets Graeme Sumner, who is known by many in the Fantasy Football Scout community as Gregor.

With six top 10,000 finishes, including three within the top 1,000, Graeme is no stranger to ending a season strongly.

He also has experience of being within a whisker of winning FPL, after ending 2016/17 in 29th spot.

During this latest Meet the Manager chat, Graeme reveals his strategies for success. This includes being aggressive in pursuit of a good captaincy option, especially low-owned assets. With hat-trick heroes Santi Cazorla and Yaya Toure among his most successful captaincies in the past, Joe is obviously keen to find out who Graeme plans to hand the armband to in the coming weeks.

Joe discovers the importance of the eye test for Graeme, as well as his tactics for avoiding the growing ‘noise’ on social media and elsewhere as millions more join FPL each year.

Finally, Graeme reveals his Gameweek 5 plans, with more low-owned gems in his thought as he targets another strong finish in his already stellar career.

This chat is available as a video and podcast below. The previous Meet the Manager videos can be found here.

it's done - the PERFECT wildcard

    Ryan - Walton
    Saiss - Zouma - Ayling - KWP - Mitchell
    Salah - Sterling - Son - Rodriguez - Stephens
    Kane - DCL - Maupay

Zouma rotation risk? Also wouldn't count on him to keep scoring. Apart from (maybe) that, it's very good!

Personally would rotate Ryan with McCarthy and bring in KWP for Mitchell

May need to down grade Maupay to Watkins or Grealish to Barkley though to get the cash ? but that would not weaken the team

    Hi,
I'm having difficulty with the RMT tool currently. I think it's because I have Nyland as a sub keeper however this player is not showing as an option in the tool (because his contract has been terminated). Has anyone identified this before?
The only quick fix i can think of is putting in another 4.0 gk as replacement within the RMT tool.

No based on how good he has been for Leicester, based on him being nailed on, based on Mendy not necessarily even being out, based on Chelsea looking better defensively on stats.

3 goals and 3 assists last year and 0 goals plus 5 assists the year before that doesn't inspire confidence. Chelsea can look better in stats all they want. They concede silly goals on a daily basis. They had great stats last year as well. Look what happened.

As a long term Chilwell owner when he was at Leicester, I can tell you that you don't get much more from Chilwell other than the very rare hauls.

Neither do you, did I say I know what will happen? Your initial comment is about a keeper injury that many not even keep him out. Just a dig at Chilwell when you could just as easy slag off Pool defender owners with Adrian in goal.

All of these wildcards will score 100 points... last gameweek.

Crazy how reactionary people are and just get in the highest scorers from last week. I'm seeing Cresswell in teams when they have tot liv MCI in their next 3 games. I'm seeing midfield trios of Son, Grealish, Rodriguez - last week's power trio.

Son and Grealish I understand because their fixtures are good and they have strong FPL pedigree, but Rodriguez I'm still not fully convinced on. 5 penalty area touches in 3 games and he has LIV sou new MUN in the next 4.

Meanwhile, you see Chelsea with SOU mun bur SHU new in their next 5 and nobody has any of their assets anymore. I almost guarantee they will be the next bandwagon. They won 4-0 at Palace and yet for some reason nobody wants to invest in Pulisic or Havertz. Pulisic especially has the whole break to gain fitness. 8.3m. Nobody has him.

City as well. Foden is still starting every game. He's 6.5m. City have whu shu in the two games following ARS (which could also be a big win). Would not surprise me to see the pendulum swing behind them when they score their next big win.

    Look ahead. Don't look behind!

    1. Klaren
      • 6 Years

I agree on Rodriguez and Grealish but disagree on Chelsea and especially Pulisic.

How Pulisic will perform is a question mark. We don't know what form he will be in when he returns, his minutes will likely be managed, he is a rotation risk competing with Abraham/Hudson-Odoi/Mount. He was on a good form post-lockdown but he also had a long run of blanks earlier last season.

Furthermore we don't how he will fit in with Werner/Havertz etc. He performed significantly better when playing alongside Giroud instead of Abraham last season and if anything Werner's style is more similar to Abraham.

Sorry meant to say agree on Rodriguez and Cresswell. Not much to say on Grealish anyway as he has both the fixtures and the form.

Pulisic is an unknown but a risk worth taking imo. You don't want to bring in players after they score 17 points. You want to get them in and make others chase you. If you wait for them to score 17 points before getting him in, you're too late already. The fixtures are there for Chelsea. They won 4-0 last game. They were the 2nd best team in the league last year in xG. All that Pulisic needs to prove to me is that he's fit and will start.

I have Havertz right now, and he's going nowhere with an eye to maybe swap him for Puli. I'm even thinking about ways to get both in two weeks time.

City have cl, screw Foden when Bilva fit plus Mahrez back in Pep's good books and Torres done ok. Chelsea look a bit pants and their attacking assets are awkard prices. If Ceesswell is in a lor of teams it will no doubt be with decebt cover for his cack fixtures

How long ago was it that Podence, Jimenez, Foden and Werner were still making wildcard teams?

We don't know that the ones we have in this current WC template are the ones we should be going for definitively.

I am sorry but have to totally disagree on this. Chelsea scoring 4 doesn't mean anything.if you watch the game you can see that the 2 penaltys are way to soft to be given. The other 2 goal In my option where guitas fault. In the chillwell goal he protected his chest instead of the short right hand side and in the zouma header with no power at all he was not moving his feet only jumped which put him out of line and to far away, the header lopped over him.in the end palace was a great site not to deserve a 4 0 beating .lampard has still no clue about his starting eleven like last year to many assets to deal with . Chelsea are a mess...butthis is only my opinion on this one good luck with the blues double up

Hard not to look at the Kane/Son relationship and their fixtures.

Bilva is back and Torres looks decent - I fear for Foden in that roulette now.

Chelsea I agree but still maybe need to see how all their big guns fit in.

Villa and Everton I agree to an extent - but they are free scoring right now and confident plus fixtures are decent to me. Can't see them slowing down just yet but the points will be spread out I think.

i think you are being a bit selective there.

James Rod has 3 goals & 2 assists and is Everton’s talisman.

Quite a few are bringing in Chilwell but fancy Pulisic but he hasn’t stared a game yet and we don’t quite know what is happening on the left and in attack with a Chelsea

I will give you Cresswell 😉

I'm not. Rodriguez is on set pieces but not pens. His average position is not very advanced. I really don't think he's as essential as people make him out to be. Not saying he's bad. Just not deserving to be in like 90% of wildcard teams.

Of course, if you have him already, keep him. But I don't think he'd make my wildcard team in an Everton double up with those fixtures they have.

James Rod is very cheap for what you get and an enabler with Son, KdB & Salah as a 4th mid and 3x6.5 up top

What’s not to like with Salah KdB Son James Rod
          Watkins DCL Wilson ?

Chelsea didn't impress me at all, defensively or offensively, still watch and see.
City will come good, they will be top 2 of goals scored.
Rodriguez is still scaring for me, effective points against me from that Brighton game was something like 7 or 8.

Defensively, they had just 0.14 xGC vs Palace in their last game. They were the most comfortable clean sheet of the week.

Reason they didn't impress because Palace offered nothing, I watched the game and can't remember a single chance Palace had. I can only remember Mendy catching 1 Townsend cross...
Any other team with little more attacking threat and Chelsea arent so comfortable and fullbacks can't surf around opposition penalty area.
That being said, yes Im looking at Chelsea, but not for next 2

Okay, but how much is it that Palace offered nothing vs Chelsea controlled the flow of the game? It's a bit of both. They have had a very unsettled backline so far. It's not entirely fair to say that against teams with mroe attacking threat that Chelsea would fall apart. This new backline has not been tested yet.

Mendy in goal. Azpi, Chilwell, T. Silva and Zouma. It could be the ticket.

I do not know if Chelsea are the next bandwagon, but getting Grealish vs Lei away, JRod who will be tired and arriving late vs Liv and Son at home (Spurs have scored 1 goal in two home games) are moves that if last GW did not take place, dont make much sense. Last week everyone was crazy about Jimenez and KDB here, now they are sold.

It doesnt take much skill to get in a WC the highest scoring players so far but takes much more skill to get Mahrez, Auba, Mitro, Mane, Rashford now on WC and these players haul. Then everybody will get them and they will blank again. Auba is a great example. Started the season as ESSENTIAL in all teams, had a ridiculously high ownership like 45% (same with TAA) if i remember correctly. He scored some ok points, no double digits and now he has half ownership. People know he wont score only 10 goals this season, so hauls are about to take place. So why not buying him before he does and get a nice green arrow?

I think the reason is that when you go to transfers page you see the players in points order. Not price, not chances created, not fixtures. Cresswell is there. Suddenly a player on WC cant think of a CPL defender or a Wolves defender because Creswell is in the list before them. People on WC try to squeeze as many players from the first page as possible, seldom go to the second and almost never to the third page.

But we're not talking about FPL sheep.

We're talking about engaged managers here on FFS. They should know better. They should be thinking deeper and trying to identify the next bandwagon.

There's so little creativity in the wildcard teams during this international break.

What would you change here then:

          Martinez Button
          Robbo Chilwell Lamptey Dallas Mitchell
          Salah KdB Son Soucek Bissouma
          Kane DCL Maupay

I think it's very well balanced. City mid and Pool defence there also and attacking Spurs fixtures with Kane AND Son.

I like it. The fact you keep Soucek because of his strong underlying stats is a good call imo. He's only 3.4% owned right now. That's at least something a bit different. Any money left?

Would make Bissouma > Stephens to free up every 0.1m. You never know when it will matter and Biss is rooted to the bench when you have Dallas and Lamptey for attacking threat anyway.

I agree, even the lower price players that are chosen in a WC team are the same in all teams. Its amazing. Try to check the players with ownership below 15%, you can make an amazing WC team just by owning players from that list. People who have not started well should search for those players, even some with ownership below 5% are very promising punts, not get the same players with the teams who started better.

Personally i’m bringing in Cresswell on WC.

I agree, his next 3 fixtures are awfull.
On WC you have to think Long term though. Certainly in defense, since you dont want to spend FT’s on it. Whu seem solid at the back, Cress has some set pieces, is an nailed on experienced player with some fpl pedigree, has the stats to back it up

At 4.9 i dont mind benching him now and then (for the next 3)and play someone like Lamptey instead. Thats what a 3rd and 4th def is all about

Definitely not a must have, but not a bad pick as 3rd def either imo

I think he's a horrendous pick. 4.9m is so much to pay for a defender you'll bench. Dallas is better for attacking threat, has comparable defensive potential as well imo in Leeds (best defense in the Championship). There's also KWP who is playing extremely offensively. Southampton's defense has improved a lot since the 5-2 mauling at Spurs.

Cresswell will lose value once these fixtures are done and he's getting 1,1,1.

Agree with Grealish and Rodriguez. Getting frustrated with Chelsea but they have the players and fixtures to definitely be the next bandwagon. With Kane eyeing up goals as well it's definitely a struggle who to fit into your attacking 7.

      Have:
      Salah KDB Havertz Son Foden
      DCL Jiminez

And 2FT .. struggling where to go next week because don't want to be on rough with the smooth

Pulisic is way too injury prone my friend. And lampard himself said he'll have to be managed differently so i don't expect he'll start every match. With the depth in Chelsea i can see werner starting a lot of matches there with abraham/giroud up front. Plus chelsea have champions league matches to play midweek while aston villa and everton get full rests. The underlying stats for Rodriguez and Grealish are quite good for the price they're at. And the fixtures aren't as bad as u make it seem. Everton have looked better than chelsea this year so far as well and have 3 of the same fixtures as chelsea in next 5(MUN, NEW, SOU). U conveniently left out fulham for Everton by only giving next 4 matches for them but gave next 5 for chelsea. Chelsea have Sheffield plus Burnley while Everton have Fulham and Liverpool. All suspect defences so far. Pulisic could be a good option too but don't disregard Hamez and Grealish just because they hauled this week and people are flocking to them.

Oh I didn't know they played Fulham after MUN. Fair enough. I still think Pulisic is worth the risk though. He got 20 points vs Burnley last season. Any player capable of a haul like that should be on the watchlist. The fact he's got an extremely low ownership, good fixtures and two weeks to get back to full fitness, and I think he should absolutely be getting into some teams.

That said, Im holding Foden for now and will save transfer if no injuries, Podence and Jimenez to Grealish and Antonio (when fixture turns) in 3 weeks plan. Chilwell already in but will wait and see on Pulisic.

Apart from Cresswell (who is just there in hope of a double rise I think), I disagree. For one, literally 3 of the 4 games that you listed as unfavorable games for Everton are the exact 3 you listed as favorable fixtures for Chelsea which is a contradiction. Everton are the better and more attacking team as well so they should do better than Chelsea in these fixtures. I think Chelsea will provide value some time in the season but not as much value as Everton who are performing like a top 3 team and priced as a midtable

hit the post button by mistake...
Everton will prove the best value out there if they keep up anything close to the current form. Rodriguez is just quality and will perform like an 8-8.5 option. I think he will match Pulisic and Havertz for 1m less. He dominates set pieces and is the chief provider in a team with DCL and Richa. He will get the odd goal every 3 or 4 games and will supplement that with assists.
Son is just essential and I believe will break the 200 pts easily this season. He is a must imo. Grealish has the form and fixtures in an improved team. He is the best option in that bracket but there are other options as well. Foden is just a trap. And with the strikers coming back and Silva,Mahrez back as well, he will be rotated.

Great post. Just to add to your points:

          * The chance of the everton team being heavily rotated is low, with 1 game a week between now and mid december. The chance of the Chelsea team being rotated is high, firstly because they have 6 extra matches in this time due to the CL, and also because its patently obvious Lampard doesn't have a clue what his best team is. Not only will this lead to a succession of 1 and 0 pointers, you will have the additional headache of players having their points potential compromised through playing in an unfamiliar position. We have already seen Havertz as a winger and a number 10, Werner as a striker and a left winger, Loftus Cheek as a centre forward (!!), Zouma dropped for a game, James dropped for a game.

          * Right now, Ancelotti is a far better manager than Lampard. Not saying Lampard can't improve and won't dicover his best team in time, but right now its Ancelotti.

          * Talisman Theory - So far, Everton have scored 221 FPL points in total, with the 3 talismen of Rodriguez, DCL and Richarlison providing 95 points between them (43%). Chelsea have scored 189, with their top 3 scorers Chilwell, Zouma and Jorginho, who have 67 points between them (35%). So not only are the points more concentrated at Everton into 3 assets, whereas at Chelsea they are more spread, these assets are fairly predictable, whereas at Chelsea I don't think anyone would have had Jorginho, Zouma and Chilwell the top scorers after 4 games. I think at Chelsea we are still waiting for the patterns to develop (if they ever will) whereas at Everton it seems fairly clear and predictable (ideal for FPL).

          * Confidence. Not measurable really but I think any striker finding the net regularly like DCL has been only breeds more confidence, and he just scored for england too. Compare this to Werner.

This is a great post and talks a lot of sense at this time of chaos.

I'm not wildcarding. I have Rodriguez but he is very likely to be a placeholder for Pulisic/Havertz in a few weeks. Might even be a cost neutral swap by then! DCL is the one to have from Everton which was my transfer in this week.

I'm also delighted to keep hold of KDB, Trent and Soucek. Sure they might drop in price, but it just means its a bigger advantage for me when they inevitably fire. They'll all be crawling back soon enough anyway so I doubt I'll lose value long term.

Probably the best post in your ten years on here. You have always been a thoughtful and enquiring poster but this post is spot on the money...and I have just bought Son and James.

I think the question you need to ask yourself is how do you determine the next buys: form, fixtures, reputation?

What criteria should we be looking at?

Do we ignore form or this no longer relevant?

Although there is some logic to this, I don't think it covers 'form' enough. Which normally plays a massive part in the points players score.

Also, it's easy to suggest going for the next punt, which is essentially what is being said here - punt on players and hope for a return. But if you wildcard in the next 5-6 "potential" haulers. You are much much more likely to fail and sink down the ranks then for all your choices to shine.

It's a balance. You need to get in the 'essential' guys that have form, fixtures and value. I'm not saying ignore Son, Salah, DCL type of players. But there should always be room for a player like Havertz or Semedo or Aguero. Getting players like this in before they become part of the template should also be part of your squad selection.

Do you think it's too risky going with 3 defenders on WC?

    VVD, Chilwell and Dias/Reguilon
    With 2x 3.9 defenders.

Got brewster as mid/forward bench cover

Can downgrade richarlison to dcl to upgrade defence but I just don't like DCL!

The Son snip snap snip snap has taken it out of me so far, dodging his points for fun.

1FT 0.1 ITB, thinking about rolling to have more options ahead of GW6

    Martinez
    Trent Lamptey Mitchell
    Salah KDB (c) Foden Barnes
    Ings DCL Jimenez

    Steer Burke Saiss James

Ings Barnes to Son 6.6 striker is no brainier

Check out gw4 and gw7. Great captiency option for Son when rest of big hitters have tough fixtures that gw

KDB wont have it easy against arsenal. Especially if he plays deep like against leeds

West Ham looking quite solid defensively, famously their cup final this game isn't it? Might give it a week and then see if Ings/Barnes is still the best way to do it

With 15.6m itb, would you do Kane + 5.0m mid or Son + 6.6m forward (Maupay, Wilson... etc?)
I hope it stop all people choosing Kane over Son.

Not a Kane hater but beware that Spurs do bad against teams that drop deep. You already forget all the "omg you are making me CDM" joke on Kane when Spurs play against low block teams?

Last two positions in my wildcard, mid price mids, and I can't decide from this lot:

    A) Rodriguez
    B) Foden
    C) Grealish
    D) Trossard
    E) Barnes
    F) Perreira

Forget the rest of team, what do you think looks the best combo, form and fixtures, for the next while?

    Currently on BC....

    Cheers for any input lads

How is this WC draft? Too risky to go without a City mid?

    Salah Son Pulisic Grealish Soucek
    Kane DCL Maupay

Actually thought about this a a lot but I don't think James will score in this rate and I always like including 1 differential in my WC and Pulisic seems to be a good one.

Looks good, maybe too early to jump on Pulisic. Wait and see how Lamps fits everyone when back from injury

jiminez do have great fixtures. I feel hell fire soon but I feel werner will too.

Lamps has no idea on how to play Werner, got rid of him after GW3 and still don't think he will fire anytime soon. Jimenez and Wolves have been frustrating the last two GWs. I only brought him in GW4 and already want to get rid of him and Podence. No FT left but fixtures are good in paper so will leave them for now

I predict a low score for Son this week but a mega haul vs Burnley, it’s the way FPL works, I’m on Sterling C this week..
