International Football

How many minutes did FPL assets play over the international break?

A busier-than-usual international break has come to an end and the Premier League players who were in action for their respective homelands have gradually returned to England ahead of Gameweek 5.

Some nations crammed in a triple-header of games over the last fortnight, with a handful of Fantasy assets taking part in all three of their country’s matches.

Fatigue is certainly a concern ahead of the Premier League’s resumption, be it through on-field exertions on the continent or due to long-haul flights back from further afield.

In this article, we’ll round up how many minutes each FPL asset clocked up while on international duty.

MOST MINUTES PLAYED

To the best of our knowledge, these were the players who racked up the most minutes over the international break:

FURTHEST TRAVELLED AND LATEST RETURNEES

Most of the matches that took place over the international break, including the friendlies involving the African teams, Mexico and Japan, were staged in Europe.

There were a number of World Cup qualifiers held in South America, however, so the likes of James Rodriguez (£7.8m), Richarlison (£7.9m), Roberto Firmino (£9.3m) and Alex Telles (£5.5m) have had to endure long-haul flights back from their respective countries after being in action in the early hours of Wednesday morning (UK time).

Everton and Liverpool, of course, meet in the Saturday lunchtime kick-off at Goodison Park.

The South American countries weren’t the last ones in action, however, with a host of European teams – including England, Scotland, the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, Italy and France – contesting Nations League games on Wednesday evening.

The dates for all of the international games in October are available here.

CLUB-BY-CLUB ROUND-UP

The team-by-team guide below breaks down the minutes that each player has played per international match over the last week or so, with a total given at the end.

Any players with an asterisk next to their names withdrew from their countries’ squads either at the outset or midway through the international break or picked up an injury at the back-end of it.

We’ll have further details on any lingering fitness concerns in our pre-Gameweek 5 team news round-up on Friday.

Clyne has signed a short term deal so think Ferguson recovery is taking longer than anticipated

Not much love for Watkins in the WC drafts? Top finisher and the focal point in a form team for 5.9

Agreed, but I'd prefer Maupay at just 0.7 more.

He’s a great option and being overlooked imo. Easy transfer to Antonio in a few weeks if he fails to deliver

It might bite me but long term speaking I am not sold on any villa players, not Watkins grealish or whoever. It's still Aston villa.watched the games aswell and just can't see it.i mean even klopp had a giggle after the third deflected goal. Yes pools defence was asleep with a super high line.but that doesn't say much imo. Not sold at all but in the end it's only my opinion and it would be boring like all the same rmwct on the site.good luck man...

Do people believe that Spurs will score 4/5 goals every 2nd week? I understand getting one of them but is it really worth doubling up without any city? Mourinho is their manager at the end of the day. They haven’t shown us they can break down a compact side yet as seen against Everton and Newcastle. They won’t be playing shocking high lines every week!

      Yeah, interesting one isn't it.

To be fair to them, had Son remained on the pitch, they would have beaten Newcastle too. They were much, much better on the day.

Not against a double-up for the next four, but things look tricky after.

Mourinho teams score a lot of goals at home, away games are where he normally plays defensively and not score many.

No they won't score 4/5 goals every 2nd week but no team scores that many.

But will they score ~3 goals every 2nd week? Yes, they might in the short term with those fixtures.

Never in his career as a manager or assistant manager, a Mourinho team conceded 7 goals. Ever.

It was already known he was in training but he's been out for a while, he might not start. Hodgson doesn't tend to rush players. I would make sure to have backup on the bench if getting him.

I'm intrigued so many are going Kane and Son. We're a counter-attacking team under Mourinho, and he's shown little ability to break down obstinate teams at home. I know the fixture list looks soft, but right now, that looks to be a negative. It's weeks 9-15 that look juicy when those teams will come and attack us.

    1. The VAR Team
      • 4 Years

For Son I agree, but I think Kane can deliver against the weaker teams

    2. JONALDINHO

What I was thinking too. Having 1 for the next 4 is plenty. Kane looks better against deep teams while son is better against the more advanced teams

      1. Pegboy
        • 13 Years

Probably true, but Kane tends to get deeper and deeper when we play low block teams. I fear Kane owners might be relying on penalties for the next few.

Yeah, it's interesting, and I've always been a bit wary of backing them under Mourinho, but you guys were unlucky against Newcastle, on another day it would have been 2 or 3-0. Reguilon at LB is a big plus too, IMO.

      1. Pegboy
        • 13 Years
        3 years, 5 months ago

Fair, but those sort of games can often feel like you're battering teams and unlucky. Unless we get an early goal, I don't trust us to remain patient. Probably helps not having a nervous/frustrated crowd there to get on their backs.

Would be a big blow if Lo Celso is out, as we lack the creativity to unpick defences without Dele and Eriksen.

They clobbered Newcastle and were very unlucky not to be 3 or 4 up at half time. I don't buy the 'counter attacking' style that results in them being bad against those defenses.

    5. Klaren
      • 6 Years
      3 years, 5 months ago

Which obstinate defensive team did he fail to break down at home other than GW1 vs Everton?

They dominated and easily beat most of the weaker teams at home since Mourinho took over: Burnley, Bournemouth, West Ham, Southamton, Olympiakos.

They didn't beat Newcastle but that was just purely unlucky with Son hitting the bar twice and GK playing one of the best games of his life; they had loads of chances against Newcastle.

      1. Pegboy
        • 13 Years
        3 years, 5 months ago

The only teams that came to defend so far this season have been (arguably) Everton, Plovdiv and Newcastle.

        M. Haifa attacked from the first minute. All the rest have been counter-attacking games.

        From memory, last season:
        - we battered a weirdly open Burnley, with most of the goals coming on the break.
        - Brighton at home was awful
        - Southampton scored early and we couldn't break them down
        - The cup game against Boro was grim. In fact the cup games against Norwich and Southampton also were.
        - We struggled to breakdown Watford and Norwich
        - Burnley away was soul destroying

We were admittedly better after lockdown, but still struggled with Everton, Bournemouth and Palace. Our better games still tended to come against the better sides.

        1. Klaren
          • 6 Years
          3 years, 5 months ago

Watford match was away. Post-lockdown vs Bournemouth and Palace were also away (so was Sheffield United).
Southampton cup match that ended 0-0 was also away, home game was 3-2. Spurs didn't play well vs Brighton but still scored 2 and missed 2 more big chances.

You are right about Norwich and Boro cup games but Spurs still did score 2 goals against each of those and beat them and they were missing some players in them including Kane vs Norwich and both Kane and Son vs Boro.

If you look at Mourinho's career, there is a big variance between home and away goals so I wouldn't assess them together.

          1. Klaren
            • 6 Years

Actually Norwich game I was talking about above was the PL one, not the Cup one.

You are right about the cup game vs Norwich but again, neither Son or Kane played in that match.

Hmmm, I'm not sure the home / away split can be made so easily when there are no fans in the stadium. Normally there is crowd pressure on bad teams to at least make a pretence of attacking at home, but that's disappeared. Admittedly, I haven't had a detailed look at the stats since the first couple of weeks of the season.

            1. Klaren
              • 6 Years

It's a good point re. no fans. I haven't done an analysis or looked at stats in detail post-lockdown either to assess whether it had a significant impact.
