UCL Fantasy: Tuesday review, Wednesday preview and tips for substitutes and captaincy

The UEFA Champions League and its Fantasy Football game have returned with a bang. If you had Angelino (€5.0m) in your team, Lionel Messi (€12.0m) as your captain or Charles de Ketelaere as a €4.5m option, then congratulations.

For those whose captains didn’t haul and are in need of some big-hitting substitutions, then that’s what this article is here for.

For the uninitiated, the UEFA Champions League Fantasy game allows managers to make manual substitutions and captaincy changes after the Tuesday round of games has taken place but before the Wednesday matches begin.

Last Night’s Review

The highest-scoring match of the night saw both Barcelona and Ferencvaros live up to expectations. This isn’t necessarily a signal that Barcelona look particularly strong going into this campaign – their easiest game is now behind them and next week’s visit to Andrea Pirlo’s Juventus will be a much sterner challenge.

Juve’s opponents from yesterday, Dynamo Kyiv, look to be stronger at the back than their Hungarian counterparts, so it’s probably worth avoiding the hype around Blaugrana until we’ve seen more.

PSG were uncharacteristically terrible to lose to an Axel ‘Maldini’ Tuanzebe-inspired (€4.0m) performance by Manchester United and should recover comfortably in next week’s visit to Istanbul Basaksehir.

As with Barcelona, those that will inevitably pile on Angelino after his four-minute brace yesterday evening will do well to consider that this was RB Leipzig’s easiest group game and he’s unlikely to have the attacking freedom or lack of defensive responsibility we saw yesterday evening.

Chelsea, Sevilla, Rennes and Krasnodar all looked fairly equally dull going forward in their Group E games, but it is good to note that Chelsea really are looking much more solid with Eduoard Mendy (€5.0m) between the posts.

Club Brugge lived up to expectations as a decent attacking force to beat a poor Zenit St Petersburg side in Russia, with the 4.5m pairing of de Ketelaere and Wilmar Barrios both putting in strong performances for different reasons.

In the other game in Group F, a surprisingly powerful Lazio side swept aside Borussia Dortmund in Rome, although it was good to see Erling Haaland (€11.0m) open his account for the season early.

Captaincy

This author tends to have a rule with changing captaincy in UCL Fantasy: six points or less is worth a change, seven or more probably too risky.

Who to change to is the tough question for today. There is no longer a safety net after Wednesday’s matches – you have to get this one right. Luckily, there are a plethora of options from this evening’s games.

Atalanta have the pick of the fixtures from an attacking point of view as they look to get back to the form that saw them score 13 goals in their first three games of the season. They are expected to start a front three of Alejandro Gomez (€8.5m), Luis Muriel (€8.5m) and Duvan Zapata (€9.5m) for their visit to Danish minnows Midtjylland and any of those should prove to be solid captaincy options.

Premier league darlings Raheem Sterling (€10.5m) and Mohamed Salah (€11.5m) also have two solid fixtures. Salah beats Sterling for form but with Liverpool’s growing injury list, Ajax may look to capitalise.

Finishing off the captaincy options are the two safest options of the week. Robert Lewandowski (€12m) and Romelu Lukaku (€11m) both bring top form into these fixtures, although Inter’s game at home to Gladbach should give him more of an opportunity to produce a score to match or outscore Messi’s 11 from last night.

Substitutions

Who to bring on and who to sub off is often a tough decision in UCL Fantasy and a decision that has to be made depending on the state of your squad.

Just a few notes on substitutions for this evening. After Serge Gnabry (€10.0m) was ruled out of tonight’s game for Bayern Munich with a positive COVID test, make sure he’s out of your lineup. Also, watch out for news this afternoon of any more positive tests within the German giants – they are reported to have all been tested and be expecting results back at about 2pm UK time. For those with the likes of Joshua Kimmich (€6.5m) and Lewandowski on the bench, watch out for this news before you bring them on.

Assuming Bayern don’t report back any more positive tests, perhaps think twice before subbing on any Atlético defenders if you have a strong line-up already – it’d be a surprise to see a clean sheet for Simeone’s side – but obviously the circumstances are different if you have a sea of one and two-pointers knocking about.

Luckily we will know if Sergio Ramos (€6.5m) starts for Real Madrid before the deadline as they play in the early kick-offs, so make sure you wait for that news if he’s sat on your bench.

Aside from the news, be sensible with your substitutions – four or five points is normally enough to keep a player on the field for and don’t try and shoehorn on subs just for the sake of making them.

Good luck for tonight’s games, all!

Any idea why Liverpool is not really using TAA's wing to attack? Last year it was more from TAA and less from Robbo.

True but last year the quality of passes was much better than Robbo which was probably the main reason preferring right wing. Maybe Tinkermania has a point but currently Robbo is on fire and all the attacks from left.

I think it’s similar to James at Chelsea, service is better, but Azpi at RB and building through left has made us much more solid. They played a lot of balls over the top last year, they seem to be building through possession a bit more

TAA has started slowly. His pre-season was delayed too. Got no doubt he will outscore Robbo. Nice to have both if you can.

2 games a week until January for all teams involved in Europe. You're asking for injuries if key players are forced to play 90, especially with such little pre season this year.

I reckon the way this season has gone, we need to question any piece of 'logic' before making our decisions.

Example 1 - Liverpool defence is gash, Adrian is a terrible keeper, VVD out is going to paralyse them.
In reality, we'll probably see Liverpool play with a more cautious, defensive style in acknowledgement of their defensive frailties. Attacking returns could suffer as TAA and Robbo play deeper with more emphasis on protecting the back line. The birth of Fabinho as a monster CB could see clean sheets return, ironically.

Example 2 - Aston Villa look great, Leeds are missing key players through injury, easy win, get Grealish.
Villa had a tough game against a depleted Leicester. Leeds are less depleted than Leicester and Bielsa's got players to fill in the gaps in his system. This man is confident enough to practically announce his starting line up every week. He just straight out comes and states that Struijk is replacing Phillips, what a legend. If anyone has done their homework and knows how to stop Jack it's Bielsa. Would you really be surprised with a draw or narrow Leeds win?

Example 3 - Newcastle defence is gash, Wolves can finally attack, Wolves to win easily, Wolves to keep CS.
Newcastle have a win over WHU and a draw with Spurs in their 2 away games this season, whilst being trounced by Brighton and MU at home. It was a similar case last season where they could suddenly play out of their skins in a random game then revert to being rubbish soon after. In any case, Wolves are not the type of team to break down a stubborn defence. Wouldn't be surprised if one or both of NEW and CRY coming up end 0-0.

I consider both form and fixtures, and form over fixtures every season. Are you saying Villa did not show form before that game? Me ignoring form and going with fixtures alone would be getting Mitrovic vs WBA or something.

It’s not form vs fixture; it’s form and fixture vs Form alone. The question is do you consider fixtures or not.

I'm agreeing with you. Ignore the fixtures, to a certain extent. If the player is doing well, creating chances etc, do it. Don't hold Zaha because they play "weaker teams", for example.

Agree with the sentiment, but then there's the distinguishing between 'form' and flash in the pan. Don't think anyone would have categorised Watkins (c) away to leicester as a fixture pick, for example. But fair to say even without hindsight that the Spurs lads were the safer picks, both much more established FPL assets compared to Villa players regardless of form or fixture.

          1. Cok3y5murf
            • 7 Years

I had Son too. Established, sure. Safe, sure. But do these results make any sense to you?

            Leicester 0 - 3 West Ham
            Villa 7 - 2 Liverpool
Leicester 0 - 1 Villa (with even more defensive injuries than vs West Ham)

And West Ham then conceding 3 goals in 15 minutes after 2 solid performances.

Villa's win vs Liverpool wasn't a flash in the pan. They didn't just score 2 or 3. They scored 7. 3 of them were wicked deflections and 1 goal was gifted by Adrian, but watching the game as well as the stats showed that it was a legitimate dominant win.

Watkins (c) wasn't a fashionable choice or a safe choice, of course, but it wasn't a bad one either imo.

I was surprised they lost to Wolves. I benched Saiss and Podence which was so close to being a disaster. But I do trust them to turn it around. With the exception of their usual end-of-season collapses, Bielsa just doesn't strike me as the type of manager to lose multiple matches in a row

It's a mad unpredictable season so far but only 5GW in. After next international break it might settle into a more predictable pattern, where defences are fitter and some teams that peaked from GW1 might fade a bit. I think Norwich looked good for 4 or 5 game weeks in 19/20 because they were fitter than most but after 20 games looked destined to go down. Still, it's great to watch. Would love to see Wolves win the league 🙂

Looked very solid last night with Mendy in goal. Statistically Mendy was one of the best goal keepers in the top 5 leagues last year, and Silva should help his CB partner perform to a higher level imo. Zouma looks much better when paired with Silva, rather than Christensen.

4 goals, and Lewandowski no goal involvement.

There's no way you wouldn't have picked him.

    Martinez
    Robertson Saiss Mitchell
    Salah(c) Son Grealish Foden
    Kane Jimenez DCL

    Steer James Taylor Alzate
    0.6m 1ft

    James is the obvious weakness.
Mitchell might not start, but think I’m happy to take the risk.

Is the potential for 2ft next week better than the potential upside of doing James to lamptey or a Leeds defender? Has to be a downgrade as I’m trying to build funds for aguero or sterling.
