Salah tests positive for coronavirus – Egyptian FA

Mohamed Salah (£12.4m) has tested positive for coronavirus while on international duty with Egypt.

The Egyptian Football Association announced on Friday that the Liverpool midfielder returned a positive test ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Togo but is asymptomatic.

The (translated) statement read:

The medical swab conducted on the mission of our first national football team showed that our international player, Mohamed Salah, the star of Liverpool, was infected with the coronavirus after his test came out positive – although he does not suffer from any symptoms.

[He] was subject to the medical protocol after the coordination of the national team doctor, Dr Muhammad Abu Al-Ola, with his English club, Liverpool, in addition to isolating him in his room and also isolating all contacts.

In a later announcement, Egypt confirmed that a second test backed up the findings of the first:

At the time of writing, Liverpool have yet to confirm the news.

Barring any further developments, Salah will now have to undergo a period of self-isolation and will very likely be unavailable for the Gameweek 9 visit of Leicester City.

The Reds are already injury-ravaged heading into that fixture, with Joe Gomez (£5.4m) joining Virgil van Dijk (£6.3m) on the sidelines and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.4m) also a major doubt with a calf problem.

Sadio Mane (£12.0m) of course tested positive for coronavirus last month, returning to training at Melwood after a 10-day period of self-isolation and featuring for the Reds in the Merseyside derby, 15 days after his initial diagnosis.

Salah could feasibly return in Gameweek 10, then, if a similar timeframe of recovery, isolation and return to training pans out – although there is also the small matter of a flight back to England in between.

We have already seen West Bromwich Albion’s Callum Robinson (£5.5m) withdraw from the Republic of Ireland squad after returning a positive test of his own.

Wolves’ Conor Coady (£5.0m) is also self-isolating after coming into contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19.

Earlier on Friday, Ireland revealed that Alan Browne had returned a positive coronavirus test after playing against England – although the Football Association of Ireland added that “no close contacts of the player” had been identified.

I've got Martinez in goal so looking to bringing in KWP at some point to benefit from McCarthy clean sheets. A good move?

Yup. Same reason I got Vest. I'll rotate him in for those games with a high CS likelihood, while Mart stays locked with his better fixtures

Tried to do a comparison of Watkins v Bamford.

First of all, this season (Watkins v Bamford):
    Goals: 6 v 7
    Assists: 1 v 2
    xG+xA/90: 0.78 v 0.66
    shots/90: 2.57 v 3.86
    Games xG 0.2, 0.7: 3 v 2

Looking at this and also the xG of all their chances (https://understat.com/player/822), the story so far this season seems to be that the two players have scored almost the same number of goals and assists, but Watkins from fewer but bigger chances, and Bamford from a greater number of smaller chances. They've both had similar numbers of games with low, medium and high xG's. They've both scored a hat-trick, but Bamford has scored points in 5 games, whereas Watkins has hauled in 3 games (but has played one fewer).

Looking at which teams each payer has scored points against, there seems to be a slight pattern, although not conclusive. As we all know, Bamford has been faring better in the 'away' games. His higher xG games have come against Leicester, Villa, Sheffield and City, having scored in the Villa and Sheffield games - he's also scored against Palace, Fulham and Liverpool, in all of which his xG was

Conclusion: both great options at £6.0m, why not get both. Bamford, at 27 years old, has a slightly more proven track record but Watkins, at 24, looks to be developing into quite a clinical finisher. The next Jamie Vardy?... Your choice depends on how you interpret a striker with more smaller chances or fewer bigger chances, plus the fixtures. Villa have good fixtures on paper but Watkins has suited the tougher games - will this continue? Bamford and Leeds certainly pass the eye test and I'd be confident of more returns to follow. I'd also be happy giving Watkins the chance in this 'easier' fixture run, given his finishing ability and the fact that Villa surely have to end up creating chances in these games. Also depends on if you're happy going triple Villa. But I usually say treat each player individually, plus Grealish and Martinez seem like season keepers even if Villa's form does drop off.
Overall I think I would go Bamford simply because of Leeds' playing style, but penalties is convincing me of Watkins

            Not so sure

            Blanks:

            Bruno: 3/7
            KdB: 4/6
            Sterling: 4/9
            Auba: Urgh

And that's just blanks, there's plenty of these games where players didn't score enough to exceed a hit and a 2 point sub.

Not saying a transfer is a baaad idea, just that covering your costs looks kinda 50/50 at best. But then with Bruno a haul is also not far short of 50/50

Is Holding nailed for Arsenal when fit? I see he has missed 3 games, but thought he was probably injured.

I just want to play a bit of a differential wildcard and try and make up some ground. A cheap defence enables a KDB+Jesus double-up in attack, as well as Bruno and Salah or Mane.

        1. FPL Theorist
          • 4 Years

Walsh tried to do this a while back, and I think he might have been successful but he plowed all the money into midfield, forcing himself to start Brewster every week, and he doubled up on Salah and Mane when their fixtures were just okay. And he got Pulisic. Thankfully I dodged that one!

Right now it's Coufal, Targett, Holding, and Phillips (one needs to be 4.0 and I didn't get in on Kilman when he was ultra-cheap). McCarthy in goal so I don't want to double up with KWP, and Targett has better fixtures.

          Nice

Consider Deulofail's concern below about Holding, though. My issue with Phillips is that he might get 3 GWs max, as TAA isn't out for that long... If Phillips even successfully replaces Milner at that RB position, that is

Phillips is a CB, not a TAA replacement. I asked about that last night and it sounded like he would play with Matip with Fabinho staying CDM in the league.

He was injured but he's not nailed. Luiz is competition, and it's not guaranteed they continue with 3 at the back every game (not that that is a massive factor here). There's also the imminent return of Mari and Chambers to contend with. He's probably first choice behind Gabriel for most games right now, but I wouldn't go as far as to say he's nailed. All Arsenal CBs also seem injury prone too.

      1. Deulofail
        • 8 Years

So I don't think you can rely on him for a long-term rotation policy. That said, since you have depth from the rotation strategy, the cost of him missing a game or 3 isn't going to be very high, so he probably IS a good choice if you ignore the fact he has no attacking threat 🙂

This Salah covid thing is the perfect excuse to get rid now IMO.

Pool's DF is absolutely decimated, which will likely have a knock-on effect on their performances. Plus, I can't see myself captaining Salah until the Fulham game at the earliest whereas, I can now get Bruno & KDB who look better options for the next 3 anyway.

Oh, and I'm super glad that I learned my lesson from the last IB and have held my transfer until after I hear the pressers after IB has finished. I was all set on Son > Bruno and my fingers were getting twitchy.

    shots/90: 2.57 v 3.86
    Games with xG below 0.2: 2 v 3
    Games with xG above 0.2, below 0.7: 2 v 3
    Games with xG above 0.7: 3 v 2

His higher xG games have come against Leicester, Villa, Sheffield and City, having scored in the Villa and Sheffield games - he's also scored against Palace, Fulham and Liverpool, in all of which his xG was < 0.5. Missed a couple of chances against Leicester. His goals suggest he might prefer the smaller teams and 'away' games, but his xG against Leicester and City was good.

Watkins' 3 scoring games have come in his 3 highest xG games, against Liverpool, Arsenal, Saints. Perhaps a clearer pattern of getting big chances on the break against teams who like to play up the pitch.

So what does their history say? Bamford is 27 with a mixed history. After a full season at Championship club Middlesbrough in 14/15, scoring 17 and assisting 2, he had 2 seasons on the bench in the top flight, before scoring 11 goals for 'borough in 17/18. He then joined Leeds, scoring 9 and 16 before promotion.

Watkins is 24 and his story is more one of steady improvement in his formative years. In 2 years at Exeter and 3 years at Brentford, he scored 8, 15, 10, 10 and 26 goals respectively. Assists varied from 3-8 per season, except for 11 at Exeter in 16/17.

The final column below shows their Goals+Assists per minute (x1000 for ease). I've only included seasons in which they've played over 1000 minutes, meaning Bamford's 15/16 and 16/17 seasons are excluded.

    Bamford:
    Leeds (20/21) Mins: 672 Goals: 7 Assists: 1 GA/m: 11.90
    Leeds (19/20) Mins: 3464 Goals: 16 Assists: 2 GA/m: 5.20
    Leeds (18/19) Mins: 1450 Goals: 9 Assists: 2 GA/m: 7.59
    Borough (17/18) Mins: 2119 Goals: 11 Assists: 0 GA/m: 5.19
    Borough (14/15) Mins: 3005 Goals: 17 Assists: 2 GA/m: 6.32
    Derby (13/14) Mins: 1270 Goals: 8 Assists: 3 GA/m: 8.66

    Watkins:

    Villa 20/21 Mins: 630 Goals: 6 Assists: 1 G+A/m: 11.11
    Brentford 19/20 Mins: 4430 Goals: 26 Assists: 3 G+A/m: 6.55
    Brentford 18/19 Mins: 3127 Goals: 10 Assists: 8 G+A/m: 5.76
    Brentford 17/18 Mins: 3531 Goals: 10 Assists: 5 G+A/m: 4.25
    Exeter 16/17 Mins: 3732 Goals: 15 Assists: 11 G+A/m: 6.97
    Exeter 15/16 Mins: 1397 Goals: 8 Assists: 4 G+A/m: 8.59

They both seem to have started this season very well, so expect both to revert to the mean to some extent. Their track records per minute are also remarkably similar, with Bamford performing slightly better in the last 3 seasons while they've both been playing in the Championship. However the similarity is perhaps impressive for Watkins given he is 3 years younger. What stands out is that 19/20 was a real step up for Watkins, during Brentford's excellent 80-goal season. The question for Watkins seems to be whether it was a one-off or a breakout season - his age suggests it is the latter as he is developing and finding his feet at a higher level, and he has hit the ground running this season. His numbers were impressive at Exeter and dropped off slightly in his first 2 seasons in the championship before that 19/20 season. Bamford has a slightly more proven track record at a higher level. Bear in mind though, only 2 of the seasons shown above involved 3000+ minutes. Might he be the one slightly more prone to rotation when GWs 13-16 come thick and fast? Bielsa only seems to remove him once he has scored, but Leeds fans may be able to help.

    What about fixtures?

Bamford: ARS, eve, che, WHU, NEW, mun
Watkins: BRI, whu, NEW, wol, BUR, wba

Bamford's fixtures are mixed, but so are his numbers from different difficulties of games so far. Personally, I can see him scoring against Arsenal and Everton - Chelsea and West Ham may be tough, but I'd fancy him against Newcastle and away at United. Hard to tell form game to game so as long as Leeds continue to create chances, owners will feel confident. Watkins' fixtures are good on paper, so it depends how strongly you interpret the indication that he performs better against better teams. Brighton, West Ham, Wolves and Burnley might be very tricky to break down. However, Watkins has penalties which Bamford does not and that could be a deciding factor.

Finally, having watched the games, Bamford certainly passes the eye test with the chances he gets, even though his finishing can be either world class or a bit erratic. For Watkins, the eye test and his stats suggest he is becoming quite a clinical finisher. Overall, I think it's a very tight decision and it may come down to each fantasy manager's style and how they interpret the more+small/fewer+big chance frequencies. The worry with Watkins might be that if the chances dry up just a little bit, he may not produce returns, however good his finishing might be. Is he another Jamie Vardy? The concern with Bamford might be that his finishing ability could be a bit erratic and not sustainable. Someone suggested to me that missing chances can affect a striker's confidence - although Bamford seems like a pretty resilient guy. Personally, I think the bottom line is they're both very good picks, and why not get both if team structure allows? They certainly beat any £6.0m options in midfield and I would be confident that there returns don't dry up at least in the mid-term. If I had to choose, I might suggest Bamford simply because of Leeds' style of play, and not wanting to triple up on Villa just in case their form as a team starts to drop. Having said that though, I do prefer to treat players individually, plus Grealish and Martinez seem like season keepers. However, penalties might just persuade me to Watkins.

    What do you think?

Note: my season so far has been pants so don't take my advice.

I would go for Watkins due to fixtures and my general agreement that duobling and tripling up is only a psychlogical block with no influence on your actual likelihood for points - in most cases. - Which I think is what you were saying... 😀

I'm thinking bith and Antonio on the WC. Watkins and Antonio have the fixtures and are quality, while Bamford can score in any game. Then go heavy in midfield. The £6m forward bracket is dense with great options

      My take:

If you have one already, don't sell for the other. It's a sideways move

If you're about to choose one, an easier method for your psyche (so you don't blame yourself) is a simple coin toss

If you want to go head to head and choose based on logic, it will still end up having something to do with your style as a manager, as pointed out in this post

I like talismans who get lots of opportunities and know how to put them away, while spreading out the teams in my XI in a highly unpredictable season

Martinez is a lock for me, since GW2. I also have Steer as a reliable backup until Heaton returns (I'll sell with a FT then), and then there's Grealish. So Bamford vs Watkins was never a thing for me, and I got Bamford

Does this make one better than the other? Not really. I'd actually suggest both, if you can. As he goes into a fixture run of low-block defences, Watkins can't keep scoring only against "big" teams that come out to attack with a confident defence he can exploit, can he? Will Bamford ever calm the hell down, and will his fixtures count against him?

      crystalball.exe returned an error there

      Good luck

Bot for me. Bam Bam now in order not to triple up on Villa and then DCL goes to Watkins and gives me money to get KDB. Boom. Done

It's very possible to hold Sterling for 10 GWs and have him outscored by other premiums by up to 30 points

It's also possible to hold him and have him outscore every other premium by the same margin

With Raheem, there's no crystal ball. There's no long term form

You just have to make your decision if you're selling and stand by it. If he hits that ultimate purple, ignore your ego and buy him back

      That's what I think

About the transfers here: yes, I would. But I'm a hitman

I am in quite the pickle. I am on a WC and Salah having got the rona means that I am a player down for the next 2 GWs. Salah's sale price is 12.2 for me. If I sell him for Fernandes, Mane or Jota then I won't be able to buy him back unless he falls to 12.2. What is everybody else doing?

Never worry about the price or TV - go for the points. Which players will return the most points through fixtures? You can buy Salah back later and will find/plan a way to do it. Some player picks work out/some don't

    Considering a hit...

    Current line up

    McCarthy

Chilwell, Doherty (swap for Mings/Coufal/KWP), Lamptey

    Barkley(Grealish), Son, Fernandes (c), Ziyech(v)

    Kane, DCL, Bamford (Watkins)

Bench: Ryan, Ayling, Mitchel, Mendy(lei) 4.6itb

In coming weeks all (players in brackets) are my expected swaps.

Deffo swapping Doherty with a free now but who is best out of the shortlist? Also is it worth swapping either Grealish for Barkley or Bamford to Watkins for the hit?

Next decision is what to do with the circa 3.3m extra and upgrade Mendy over the next few weeks.
