Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 9?

Ahead of Gameweek 9, a costly international break and tricky fixtures make for one of the most challenging Fantasy Premier League captaincy debates of the season so far.

Our teams are awash with multi-coloured flags representing injuries and positive coronavirus (COVID-19) tests, limiting our ability to trust assets we have regularly turned to for the armband in 2020/21.

Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) is set to miss at least the next Premier League game as he recovers from COVID-19 while this year’s top-scoring assets so far in Harry Kane (£11.0m) and Son Heung-min (£9.5m) face Manchester City.

But fear not, the Captain Sensible article is here to help you pick the best captain from the bunch this week.

As ever, this uses extensive data from the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area so only those with a valid subscription can access it in full.

CAPTAIN POLL

For the first time since last season, Bruno Fernandes (£10.6m) is the runaway leader in a Fantasy Football Scout captain poll, fresh from a 17-point haul at Everton in Gameweek 8.

The Portuguese midfielder has gained more than a third of all votes ahead of Manchester United’s favourable fixture against relegation candidates West Bromwich Albion.

Fernandes appears to be the only trustworthy Fantasy option among the alternatives for this particular fixture, as no other Manchester United player achieved more than 2% of votes.

Competing for the second and third-place spots are Jack Grealish (£7.5m) and Hakim Ziyech (£8.2m) with 11.9% and 10.3% of votes, respectively.

The Aston Villa midfielder enjoyed a busy week with the English national team, starting all three of their international break matches, against Ireland, Belgium and Iceland. Deserved game-time considering the four goals and six assists Grealish has registered in the Premier League this season; only Salah (67) and Son (74) have more points among midfielders at this stage.

Ziyech, meanwhile, continued his great form by scoring three goals and providing two assist in two games for Morocco having put up double-figure hauls in both of his league starts for Chelsea in 2020/21.

The remaining players with more than 5% of votes are Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.8m, 9.9% of votes), as well as Chelsea’s left back Ben Chilwell (£6.0m, 8.4%) his team-mate, Timo Werner (£9.4m, 5.7%).

With so many premium assets not featuring at the top-end of the poll this week, is it possible Fantasy managers are overlooking options that still have potential for Gameweek 9? Let’s find out…

If I knew I was WC'ing after GW9 deadline, I would be tempted by a one week Auba (C) punt. Otherwise Werner, DCL, Grealish and Watkins in that order.

    ***** Friday Morning Teaser!! *****

So, I looked at the top 10 scoring FPL players across each of the 4 positions

    40 players in total (GKx10 / Defx10 / Midx10 / Fwdx 10)

I then checked how many players each club had from that cohort of 40 players

The leaders to date are Villa and Southampton - 5 players each

With at least 1 player in each postion - this depsite Villa being one of the teams with a game in hand...

So, there are 4 teams with ZERO players in the top 40

Sheffield Utd and Baggies are 2 - but who are the other 2??!!!

At the start of the IB I was sure I'd do Son > Bruno. Then as things unraveled I was pretty certain I'd take a hit or two...

Now I'm looking at my team and thinking if I should just captain Son (got a feeling about him) and save the transfer 😆

Is it madness to go wit this and bank the FT?

    Martinez
    Robbo - Chilwell - Lamptey
    KDB - Son (C) - Zaha - Rodriguez
    Kane - DCL - Wilson

    Steer - Kilman - Mitchel - Stephens

    1 FT, 1.6 ITB

    Martinez
    Cancelo Chillwel Creswell
    Kdb Bruno(c) Soucek Bruno
    Watkins DCL Vardy

    Bench- Macey, Foden, Justin, 3.9

The goal was to have triple city for their good run although I will bench foden for this Spurs game as I feel Soucek is a better option. Also have a fairly decent bench with Soucek and Justin later on if rotation strikes for Cancelo and Foden.

How much itb? Really want 0.1 so Watkins/Bamford are interchangeable if one drops/rises

      1. Jealous Viper
        • 5 Years
        3 years, 4 months ago

Actually have a good 1.8 itb but 1.3 of that is for when I feel I'll need to swap Bruno back to Salah. I have 0.1 to play with. Who would you pick between Bamford and Watkins. Actually was skeptical about having too many eggs in the villa basket but in isolation at 6m, he's a great pick

        1. Pacer.
          • 9 Years

Villa are overperforning by 50-100% goal wise for any team ever that isn't top six. Watkins has the worst goal involvement of all good budgets. So the two side to it are, if we simplify, Villa are the team by far most likely to slide and he's the striker by far most likely to struggle in s team that scores fewer. Other side being they have great fixtures and he's getting points while they haul. The key here isn't so much making sure you pick the right one as making sure you have an alternative/s that won't cost you hits.

Personally I slightly favour Bamford. Leeds are scoring at a slightly more sustainable rate and he has a higher involvement

Hmm. Great points. Thanks. It will probably come down to the wire for those two for me. Still leaning Watkins way because of the fixtures for now

Guys, my transfer this week depends on whether I WC next week. Do you think I should WC next week?

    Mccarthy (Button)
    Zouma Holding Konsa (Justin Mitchell)
    Salah JRod Son Grealish (Bissouma)
    DCL Werner Kane

If I WC I'll do Salah > Bruno this week then get Salah back as well as city players when I WC.

    1. Captain Scarlet
      • 10 Years
      3 years, 4 months ago

Is a WC necessary next week? I'd much rather hold and maybe take the odd hit.

I'd do Salah to Bruno and then reassess next week. The rest of your front 8 are fine for this week, and the majority for the weeks after too.

Maybe a tweaking of defence this week or next?

Could do Burke to Jota -4 to cover Salah/Wilson but leaves serious future benching headaches. Worth it or do something else removing Foden/Salah? Son -> KDB GW10.

    Attack would be:
    Salah Jota Foden Son Grealish
    Wilson Kane DCL

    Start Wilson or Coufal?

If it were me, I'd go with Coufal.

Coufal will play, and Sheffield United have bebe poor in attack. Wilson may not even start (could do), and Chelsea have been fairly solid at the back.

Newcastle are one of our bogey teams though!

Jurgen Klopp on Mohamed Salah: "He is probably back [in Liverpool] today. When you have a negative test, the process really starts. He is in a good place, feels well, no symptoms, so that's all fine."

    Doesn't really tell us anything

Reading between the lines still positive, until test comes back negative?

      Then,

The pair will now return to the UK, where they will be tested on arrival and must complete their 10-day isolation period, as outlined by the UK government's coronavirus rules.

Of course not - 10 days from 1st positive test

He had a positive test yesterday which means by law he has 10bdays to isolate even with further testing and no symptoms.

That puts him out for the Brighton match by my reckoning.

Meaning out a minimum of 2

But forget positive tests. As of right now, 10 days puts him out a minimum of Leicester and Brighton

It's 10 days isolation from the first positive test. If he then tests positive every day after and then tests negative on the 10th day, he's fine.

You're not really getting it are you. From the first positive test. Testing positive yesterday is still within the 10 days initially so doesnt really have any significance. If he tests negative before 23rd then he will be cleared to train. Thats why he's on a plane back to liverpool today..

Jesus, read correctly - it's 10 days FROM 1ST positive test! Not from the first negative test.

It was also stupid that they let him fly while having positive test but it is what it is. In my opininion very likely he plays against Brighton

No. 10-day count starts from the 1st test. If any test comes after 23rd, he will be straight in for training. Same happened with Telles. But he has a chance of getting more positive tests which may rule him out again.

I think the requirement is 10 days isolation from the first test. If he test negative within those 10 days he will be clear to play Brighton, no?

Yes. I'm not really concerned about Leicester, its the brighton game I care about. I think he's got a good chance of making that and I dont want to waste 2 transfers taking him out and bringing him in

That's exactly my way of thinking - I think it's a good chance he starts against brighton. Awfully scared not to have Bruno though but I think I will take that risk

People are so blind sighted by last weeks points that it’s actually scary, and ignore what’s right in front of them.

    Urgh my options are
    A) Keep Salah, play Coufal. I won't have a bench if I do this
    B) -4 Salah to Mane

A sucks if he's out more than 1 game. B sucks if he's out for just 1

Just do what you don't want to do but is the sensible option. Get KdB. You can hokey cokey him around his great fixture and Salah's GW12(C) and you're protected against any small risk of him hauling against spurs. Don't overthink it for the potential upside of what, 5-10 points for Coufal
