Top 10k managers not yet sold on Man City assets as Gameweek 10 splits captaincy

The Gameweek 10 captaincy debate looks destined to cause a drastic re-shaping of the top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers.

That’s because there is no standout candidate for the armband this week, according to analysis on LiveFPL.net.

Rather than one or two individuals breaking away from the chasing pack, there is an unprecedented five-way split of similarly backed captains – which is sure to create serious rank movement at this level.

As you can see, Jamie Vardy (£10.2m) was the top 10k’s favourite for the armband ahead of a favourable home meeting with Fulham’s naive and obliging defence.

However, only 21.1% were happy backing the Leicester man, the rest perhaps swayed by the disparity between his home and away form (only one of his 10 attacking returns have come at the King Power Stadium this season) or maybe enticed by the array of other options.

Mohamed Salah‘s (£12.2m) midweek appearance, a first outing since returning from self-isolation, has convinced 16.1% of the top 10k that he can be trusted against Brighton.

Prior to his positive coronavirus (COVID-19) test, the Egyptian had returned in four of his previous five Premier League appearances.

But the recent double-figure haul from Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.8m), combined with Leeds’ recent drubbings, means that a further 15.7% chose the Everton man as captain.

Meanwhile, 14.7% went with away-day specialist Bruno Fernandes (£10.8m), with double-figure hauls in every road-trip this season and Harry Kane (£11.0m), despite facing Chelsea’s improved defence, still managed to attract 14.5% of the top 10k’s captain armbands.

The impact of such a concertinaed captaincy spread on effective ownership is fascinating too.

It means no player can boast a figure in this department over 100% for Gameweek 10, Calvert-Lewin going closest with 96.3%.

Once again, tough fixtures have not triggered a flash sale of Spurs assets among the top 10k, Kane and Son Heung-min (£9.5m) sitting inside the top three for effective ownership at this level.

What these figures mean is that Gameweek 10 is the perfect week to have tried something different, considering that going against the so-called “crowd” carries considerably less risk than usual. As a result, making such a decision carries a higher chance of bigger green arrows if successful.

It is particularly telling that no Manchester City player featured in the top five captains at this level, despite a favourable match-up with Burnley.

The Clarets have lost their last three trips to the Etihad Stadium (in all competitions), every time by a 5-0 scoreline.

If Kevin De Bruyne (£11.6m) benefits from Saturday afternoon’s outing, he will reward only a small number of captainers in the top 10k.

Just 6.6% of them felt confident enough to hand the Belgian their armband, while only 1.1% captained Raheem Sterling (£11.5m).

In fact, not a single Manchester City player appears in the template at this level yet, despite Pep Guardiola’s men embarking on their appealing fixture run this Gameweek.

After hosting Burnley, Manchester City welcome Fulham, West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle to the Etihad Stadium between now and Gameweek 15, but only 19.5% of the top 10k are invested in De Bruyne, the Citizens most popular player among such managers.

Son, Fernandes remain the most fashionable premium options in midfield while Salah and Diogo Jota (£6.7m) are the movers and shakers, replacing Wilfried Zaha (£7.3m) and James Rodríguez (£7.9m) in the template.

Unsurprisingly, there was much less fluctuation among the defenders and forwards.

Calvert-Lewin has overtaken Kane as the most popular striker in the top 10k, now owned by 80% of them while the Spurs man saw his backing drop by a margin of 10 percentage points.

Patrick Bamford (£6.1m) holds onto the third-place spot meaning Vardy remains outside the podium for top 10k ownership.

Meanwhile, the top-five defenders remain unchanged, with minimal shifts in top 10k ownership.

Just 23% of the managers in this rank bracket have gone chipless thus far in the campaign while 46.4% have deployed exactly one.

Interestingly, 2.3% of them have already exhausted their entire supply.

Once again, the Wildcard was the most popular chip for the latest Gameweek although it was used sparingly compared to the rest of the top 10k.

With 2.9% going for the Free Hit, 3.7% pulled the trigger on brand new squads for Gameweek 10.

Interestingly, those playing the Wildcard at this level have largely templated themselves to the overall selection picture, as you can see a large number of overlaps.

Despite the tougher fixtures, Son and Kane still feature heavily in these squads, as do Salah and Jota while João Cancelo (£5.5m) and Vardy are the big exceptions to the main template.

They've all been suffocating my team since GW2. I can see why I'm doing so badly if everyone else is not owning the bad players, as I am. Hopefully the bad players will become the good players, coz I'll be damned if I can choose good players myself.

I suspect this won't be the case. My conviction was that Fernandes is the ever present (fingers crossed) and that Kane and Son emerged as the players that simply aren't worth the transfers to mess with. With early signs that could be the case after they drubbed city, there's a strong possibility that mucking about with the slots around these three players could be the way to go

Drubbed City? They had 4 shots and conceded 2 big chances. Ultra negative tactics from Mourinho given the early goal. Don’t see them putting up many goals with their difficult fixtures.. Bruno, KDB, Salah, Sterling, Vardy all superior options for the foreseeable

Not a problem, I own KdB, Bruno, Kane and Son

And yes, anyone who watched that match with their eyes open saw them drub city. They beat City comfortably and both Spurs assets returned

                9.5 and 10.5

Trying really hard here if you're claiming that 14 points is a poor investment return for 20m against Manchester City. 7ppg is lovely in any week for anyone

The conversation here is basically about chasing explosive scores. I'm not going to do that excessively and let the rest of my team rot whilst those two keep returning. I have captains in Bruno, KdB and Kane. I don't need another in, for example, Sterling, whose 2m more than Son and is pretty much the only premium not on pens. Sure he has a whopping ceiling, sometimes, but he's so unreliable that you're basically accepting you may have to neglect your team. It's not worth it.

As for Vardy, I don't like not owning him this week, that's for sure. But I feel fairly confident owning Kane. I've been watching him each week and he's in the form of his life.

And re. Mourinho tactics: it's early in the season. Mourinho shuts up shop in the second half of the season. I see nothing to worry about at all. There's been a couple of tricky games against rubbish bus-parkers, but that comes to everyone. You just want the player that gets that one goal. That's Kane

    2. Deulofail
      • 8 Years
      3 years, 4 months ago

Yeah, they're doing well, in part, because they don't own him. They can't all just get him because they want him. Besides, without doing the maths, it looks like more KDB owners in top 10k captained KDB, then Vardy owners, Vardy, and Salah owners, Salah, proportionally speaking. So headline is a bit off, you might say.

    Who to start next week?

    A) Lamptey (SOU - and I have no Southampton defenders)
    B) Bamford (che - I have Chillwell)

I usually always start the attacker but leaning towards A.

I love Lamptey, but not easy to predict his returns. Seems to be a bit unlucky and Southampton could esily score. Bamford is more likely to return in my mind, and Chilwell doesn't have much to do with it 🙂

I don't like the way it's been, but with this amount of changes, when it comes to Jan or whenever there will be people with a huge amount of value and their second wildcard will accrue an awesome team. You don't want to be scratching around for cheap players then.

That's why I'm personally forced into more transfers than usual at this stage, trying to keep on top of money as well as team

I've made 5 transfers for Gameweek 10 at the cost of 12 pts:

    TAA to Robertson
    Kane to Vardy
    DCL to Bamford
    Son to De Bruyne
    Zouma to Cancelo

Not my usual style, but just felt right to get these players in with more potential in the medium term as I reason it.

Will use my wildcard before it expires around GW16.

Eh, hardly. Not something that's common, and often bite back but sometimes you see this happen when people really want XYZ. Doing it all in one week stops staggering it over 5 GWs.

No offence mate but I feel you've been sucked in by the FFScout hivemind here. Kane AND Son out? The top scoring striker and the top scoring midfielder in the game. Both flying and their team are top of the league and in great form.

These so called monster fixtures are overstated. They spanked City last week with both players returning and have an atrocious Arsenal next week then Palace after.

Why DCL to Bamford? DCL at home to a really poor defence in Leeds then Burnley next week while Bamford has Chelsea away next week.

Good luck though. It's bold as hell!

Thanks for the good wishes. Good to hear your opinions.

You're right Son & Kane have been in great form. I do feel that they cannot sustain that level though, and the fixtures are turning.

Really wanted to get Vardy & De Bruyne in primarily.

DCL, I have doubts about who is going to assist him. Imo James looks slightly off it and with Digne injured..

I took a -8 to get De Bruyne and Vardy this week for Kane and Salah. Brings me to -40 in total hits for the season. I’m ranked 60k with a 105.8m TV. Play the game your own way and don’t listen to the sheep telling you to get back in the herd.

I did two lots of -8 over gw9 and 10 - I've cut down on transfers this year, but having my worse year

GW9 : Kane, Salah and Son to Vardy, KDB and Bruno
GW10 : Werner, Rashford and Zouma to DCL, Sterling and Justin

I do like to have a plan for 6-8week blocks. I don't normally take hits.

However I think it may be more necessary this season with players isolating at short notice. Plus regular injuries etc. Could be possible to target players playing weakened teams.

Salah, Jota & Firmino all had limited minutes in Champion's League, so maybe possible that Mané will not play the full game against Brighton.

Too late to avoid Kane SP drop. Oh well I can take some time with the following options:

    Martinez (Forster)
    Chilwell - Cresswell - Robertson - (Kilman - Mitchell)
    Salah(c) - B Fernandes(vc) - J Rodriguez - Grealish - Podence
    Kane - Bamford - Watkins
    0.1itb 1FT

    A) Kane Podence >> Wilson Son (0.2itb rotate forwards in 3-5-2)
    B) Kane J Rodriguez >> DCL Son (1.1itb 3-4-3)
    C) Kane J Rodriquez >> Wilson KdB (0.4itb 3-4-3)
    D) Kane Watkins >> Vardy Wilson (0.1itb 3-4-3)
