Having completed our Group A analysis over the last four days, the Euro 2012 coverage shifts focus this afternoon. Next up, it’s Group B under the microscope, as we get the ball rolling with a look at Denmark…

Morten Olsen’s men get their campaign underway on Saturday June 9 at 5pm, in the group’s opening game against the Netherlands. The Danes have a four-day wait under their second fixture – once again, they kick off early, with a 5pm showdown against Portugal, before their final match at 7.45pm on Sunday June 17 against Germany.

There’s little doubt that Denmark are the rank outsiders to progress from Group B. Germany won all 10 of their qualifying games, racking up 34 goals in the process, Holland were victorious in nine of their 10 matches and notched 37 times, while Portugal – after finishing second to the Danes in qualifying – hammered Bosnia-Herzegovina 6-2 on aggregate in the play-offs.

The Road to Qualification

Placed in a five-team group in qualifying, Denmark won six and lost just one of their eight matches. After a tricky start – where they were victorious in just one of their opening four – Olsen’s side won the last four and showed their resolve with a 2-1 triumph in the winner-takes-all final match against the Portuguese, ensuring automatic qualification. Olsen’s side conceded six goals, with four clean sheets chalked up along the way, and found the net 15 times – scoring two or more goals on five of those eight occasions.

Most Appearances: Jacobsen, Rommedahl, Eriksen (8), Krohn-Deli, C Poulsen, Kjaer (7)

Top Scorers: Bendtner, Rommedahl (3), Krohn-Deli (2)

Top Assists: Rommedahl (5)

The Likely Lads

Priced at 6.5, Christian Eriksen’s role as the most advanced central midfielder in a 4-3-3 allows his playmaking abilities to flourish. The Ajax man pretty much monopolises set-pieces, as the number one for both corners and free-kicks, and is already the most popular Danish attacking asset, with 10.5% ownership. He arrives on the back of a strong domestic campaign for the Dutch champions, with seven goals and 18 assists steering his side to the Eredevisie title – if Denmark are to beat the odds and progress beyond the group stages, Eriksen’s contribution will be crucial.

Joint-top scorer in qualifying with three goals and the provider of most assists, Dennis Rommedahl makes a strong case for inclusion. The Brondby man currently has a thigh injury but has been included in the provisional squad, with Olsen quoted as being certain the winger “will be ready”. Priced at a mere 5.5 and classified as a forward, Rommedahl – who plays on the right of the front three – is an alternative for those Fantasy managers reluctant to invest much budget in the Danes, given their relatively weak fixtures.

The much-maligned Nicklas Bendtner may struggle to justify his extreme self-confidence on the domestic stage but has a knack of producing at international level. Priced at 7.0 he’s unlikely to attract too much interest – at present, Bendtner has just 1.3% ownership in the McDonalds game – but, with three goals in the Danes’ last four, including a crucial strike in the final group match against Portugal, Olsen’s preferred lone frontman arrives in strong form for the Group B underdogs.

Cheeky Punt

Realistically, it’s hard to justify any sort of investment in the Danish defence. Up against the likes of Robin Van Persie, Cristiano Ronaldo and Mario Gomez in consecutive matches, few, if any, have faith in clean sheets. Daniel Agger has already attracted the most interest of any Danish outfield player, with an ownership of 14.2% but a price tag of 5.5 looks steep, despite his occasional free-kicks. For anyone considering an admittedly risky punt on the backline, 4.5 priced Thomas Sorensen offers a cut-price option. With plenty of save points likely to be accrued, in addition to his reputation for keeping out spot-kicks, the Stoke man should be kept busy from start to finish – the back-four will likely need to return attacking points to outscore him. For those who reckon Anders Lindegaard could oust Sorensen as first-choice keeper, the upcoming couple of friendlies against Brazil and Australia should hopefully reveal all – priced at 4.0, Lindegaard certainly offers even better value and has been snapped up by an incredible 30% of Fantasy managers already.

Likely to play wide left in the front three but classified as a midfielder, Michael Krohn-Deli is an out-of-position prospect afforded to Fantasy managers. Priced at 6.0, he has been picked up by a mere 0.3%; Eriksen is clearly the midfielder of choice here but Krohn-Deli’s slightly cheaper price, backed up by a record of three goals in his last five, suggests he could appeal to those seeking a real differential amongst Olsen’s squad.

I think young is more essential to England doing well than nasri is to France although fantasy wise nasri prob shades it for me, but I wouldn't have either for the first round personally. I will prob be bringing nasri in for gw2.

    Tzorvas given
    K.papa kadlec zhirkov rakitskiy m.Olsson
    Sneijder ozil dzagoev mandukic yarmolenko
    Lewandowski rvp Keane

If jelly looks a sure starter he will be in for Keane and I will be upgrading Olsson.
Also if huntelaar looks like he will play furthest forward he gets the nod over rvp.
    Captains:
    Day 1 - kadlec/dzag
    Day 2 - ozil/rvp
    Day 3 - mand/keane *jelly*
    Day 4 - yarmo

    Opinions welcome please. 🙂

RVP > Robben would let you improve your GK situation.

And Shirokov has scored as well as Dzagoev in a similar number of matches and is 1.5m cheaper. Good side though.

Robben and Sneijder have far more credentials at the big tournaments for Holland. Not saying that won't change but for 9m Robben is a great pick. Most direct player in the team and always stands out on the International stage.

Thanks, Yeh I looked at shirokov its just dzag plays further forward but u may be right at 1.5 cheaper could well be worth it. I originally had akinfeev but think zhirkov is a decent attacking threat and fancy a double on Greece at back first day, very solid outfit.

Robben had crossed my mind too so thanks.

    Thoughts on when to Wildcard

    GW3 (starting in reverse)
I think its a risky tactic trying to guess what changes each manager will make in GW3, we will only know Group A's line ups before they kick off and this group doesn't contain the big guns so the problem still lies.

Say for example Spain win their first 2, will you bring in the likes of Soldado, Cesc and Mata with no assurances of either starting? Or will you bypass Spain altogether?

In all likelyhood most teams will still have something to play for with the top seeds playing each other in most Group openers eg Spain/Italy and France/England these are likely to be cagey encounters with a high possibility of ending in a draw.

    GW2
I am leaning towards this option due to the major swing in fixtures, in GW1 Sweden, Croatia, Holland, Ukraine etc look very good options but have awful fixtures GW2/3 so I wouldn't want to be left with any of these players.

We will have knowledge of what big teams have won their opening fixtures and are likely to be through by the time GW3 comes around so I would not overload my team with these players but in fact take a 1 game punt like many will do but in GW3 eg Spain beat Italy - I would only have say Llorente for Ireland and use my transfer GW3 on moving him out. Italy however I would I would happily have Balotelli and a defender knowing they will need to need to win both remaining games. The same thing with England/France but I would have to ignore the victor so I'm not loaded with a dead player in GW3, possibly a defender who is guaranteed to play would be worthwhile.

Rooney tempts me GW3 as he will be one of the strikers assured of a starting berth, this is infact another reason Im tempted by GW2 wildcard as I would like Ronaldo V Denmark as my Matchday 2 Captain with Germany playing Holland, but not in GW3 leaving me an easy swap to Rooney GW3.

am really not sure, part of my reasoning for GW3 was the rotation aspect, but I also pointed out that we just can't be sure who will play and who won't bar Rooney. I am looking at GW2 to get Hart in alongside Ronaldo who can then become Rooney in GW3.

Have just tried to pick a team for GW2 and came up with

          Hart, Given

          Hummels, Pizczek, Papa, Kadlec, Debucy

Shirokov, Madzukic, Feftzanzidis, Ozil a mid for 6.5 (maybe Nocerino or Aquilani if they play)

          CR7, Benzema, Lewandowski

Leaving my FT for GW3 as CR7 to Rooney

If you click through to your team name then you can bid on who you want. You have 100mill and then use it up to bid on the players you want.

then i went to save it (green button, or so i thought) and it submitted my draft.

For anybody who's interested in another's opinion of the Danes at this year's Euros, take a look at this and let me know if you've got a strong enough argument why I should've written something on Dennis Rommedahl 😆

It's been a pretty productive Sunday, did this one on the Netherlands earlier: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2012/05/20/team-of-the-season-danny-simpson/comment-page-2/#comment-3236209

    THE DEFENCE

Including friendlies, Denmark have played 16 games since August 2012. During this period, they have conceded 16 goals and kept 6 clean sheets so defensive returns against their Group B rivals look highly unlikely. However, there are some cheap options within the Danish defensive ranks that may free up cash for other areas of your team.

Thomas Sorensen seems to be Morten Olsen’s first choice between the sticks. At 4.5 million, he’s a cheap option that’s likely to get a lot of game time and save points. Interestingly, Anders Lindegaard is owned by 31.3% of managers despite Olsen referring to the Manchester United man as an ‘injury-free third keeper.’ Game time doesn’t look too likely for him but could be bought as bench fodder considering, at 4.0 million, he’s as cheap as a goalkeeper comes in this game.

Daniel Agger is the highest owned Danish defender in the game because of his goal threat – he has scored twice in his last 6 international games. However, spending 5.5 million on a Denmark defender might be too much considering their opposition. Lars Jacobsen costs only 4.5 million and is nailed on to play every game. He also managed a goal in the penultimate game of qualifying.

If you’re looking for a super-cheap option, then Andreas Bjelland has played 4 out of the last 5 games, including 90 minutes in each of Denmark’s final 2 qualifying games. He’s available for 4.0 million so just like Lindegaard, his price is rock-bottom but the difference is that Bjelland will probably play at least 2 of the group matches.

    THE ATTACK

Denmark’s attacking record is somewhat better than their defensive record, with 25 goals scored in their last 16 games. The in-form goal scorer for the Danes is Nicklas Bendtner who has scored 5 goals in his last 6 internationals. As most of us know from Fantasy Premier League, Bendtner can often be a source of frustration for managers as he has a reputation to squander chance after chance. At 7.0 million, he’s certainly a risk but this could be the stage where the Arsenal man may fulfil his own prophecy of eternal greatness.

At 1.3% ownership, Bendtner is a big differential but in midfield we have Michael Krohn-Dehli who is owned by a comparatively tiny 0.3% of managers. Classified as a midfielder but often tucking in behind the striker, Krohn-Dehli has scored 4 goals in his last 9 international appearances. He’s not overly cheap but for 6.0 million you get a player with guaranteed game time and an eye for goal. A very interesting differential.

Finally, we have the highest owned Danish Midfielder, Christian Eriksen. In 42 games for Ajax this season, the young attacking midfielder scored 8 goals and managed 20 assists which unsurprisingly drew the attention of many big clubs around the continent. On an international level, the 20 year old missed none of the qualifying games and has 2 goals in his last 8. He costs 6.5 million so should be approached with caution, but he could just excel in a group brimming with attacking talent.

I'm purely focusing on statistics so I could easily get the starting 11s wrong. For example, I'll probably say that the 4 defenders with the highest game time will be the back 4 for gameweek 1, when in reality they could all be central defenders! I'll look into it though, thanks Camzy.

Neither are leaving. The Shaqiri signing is to give the Bayern squad more strength in depth, particularly in midfield.

Bayern were awfully predictable going forward from Christmas onwards, and last night was no exception. Even lowly teams such as SC Freiburg worked out that if you flooded the centre of defence and let Robben and Ribéry have the ball in front of the back line then they would either launch poor crosses or cut in ineffectively. What they wouldn't do is get to the byline and turn the full-backs.

Thomas Müller is also liable to get found out at the highest level - Heynckes' tactical set-up meant that he had the most space last night, but he failed to link up with his wingers. Shaqiri should give the Bavarians another option and, crucially, another potential leader figure which (Lahm & Schweinsteiger apart), Bayern currently lack.

Awful mistake by Lloris, who has just punched the ball into his own net. Montpellier match held up due to Auxerre fans pelted one goal with toilet rolls and tomatoes. Autres pays, autres moeurs.
