634x258 Season Review

Before the end of 2011, David Silva looked to have the Player of the Year trinket in his immaculately tailored pocket. An outstanding opening to the season inspired City to some mesmerising attacking football, as the impish Silva stood head and shoulders above the Premier League’s midfield talent.

Yaya Toure’s departure for the African Cup of Nations, coupled with growing concerns on Silva’s fitness, saw the Spaniard in decline in 2012. Despite this slump, Silva ended last term as the league’s most creative player and, from a Fantasy perspective, did enough to justify his pre-season price tag to earn a place in our team of the 2011/12 campaign.

The Statistics

Two goals in City’s opening pair of fixtures confirmed what we thought – that, at 9.5, David Silva offered exceptional value in a side that was likely to challenge for the title.

It appeared, from the initial matches, that Silva had grown in stature from his first season in England – certainly when it came to goal threat. Five strikes in the opening 16 Gameweeks already bettered last season’s paltry tally of four with matches to spare. From that point on, however, the goals were to dry up. Silva notched just once more in the league – an effort in the 4-0 home win over West Brom in Gameweek 33 was his one solitary strike in 20 league appearances from January onwards.

Fortunately, Silva’s creativity was to provide ample compensation. A staggering 17 assists were to arrive over the campaign, more than any other player. Scattered over the season, Silva did suffer a lean spell from Gameweeks 23-32 which saw him register just a single assist in eight appearances.

That spell coincided with concerns over an ongoing ankle injury which dented confidence and saw his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ownership plummet. His price duly fell back down to 9.6, having reached the heights of 10.6 by Gameweek 27.

Silva’s FPL bonus returns were perhaps disappointing, given his contribution to the City cause. Twenty-one points just edged out last season’s tally, an indication of how the EA PPI has perhaps impacted on Silva’s Fantasy potential. While his heavy involvement and completed passes will have won him favour under the old FPL bonus system, EA’s statistics based method appears to prefer the contributions of pure goalscorers: Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko soaked up a lot of City’s bonus points (30 and 18 respectively).

The Prospects

Silva could well be a rare commodity: a player acknowledged for a fine 2011/12 season, who could actually grow in Fantasy potential for the next campaign. While the likes of Clint Dempsey, Gareth Bale and Gylfi Sigurdsson – if he stays in the Premier League – are surely destined for significant price rises, Silva’s value could well remain stable at around the 9.5 mark. That will certainly work in his favour.

Starts seem assured if he can go into next term with a restful pre-season, extinguishing fears of that ankle problem. A Euro 2012 campaign with Spain will, of course, have its demands if Silva can cement his place in the star-studded starting XI. Regardless, City will surely hand him an extended break following the tournament.

Silva’s potential will depend greatly on him making further progress in front of goal. Last season’s opening spell hinted that the Spaniard had the ability to return 10+ strikes over the season and, if he can reach those heights, there’s little doubt that the assists will accompany the returns to lift Silva further into the midfield heavy-hitter bracket.

Caution is clearly the policy of choice. Roberto Mancini will be reinforcing his richly talented squad and the potential arrival of Eden Hazard will, above all other possible acquisitions, change the attacking dynamic in the City lineup. Silva will unquestionably be a key component in the charge on silverware next term; whether that role will translate to a further rise in his Fantasy potential remains to be seen.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

He was a good source of steady points throughout the whole season. An invaluable trait. You were unlucky you caught him toward the end, as he was tiring.

I think this is the potential lineup:

        Vorm
        Boula Vlaar Bouma Willems
        Strootman Maher/Anita
        Lens Vdv/S.De jong Narsingh
        L De Jong

I think there will be slightly more established players in than that. Anita would more likely play at fullback I think if van Marwijk is considering him for one of those positions. He is better at DMC but there is plenty of cover there. Boula should be in the centre.

I have been looking at 6 or 7, 2 strikers, a copule of defenders and 3 or so new faces in mid. Time to move towards Italy, Spain, CR7, France in that week and maybe England, with someone like Cahill before my GW3 transfer sees Rooney come in.

yeah but what I'm saying is if I get walcott or Young, I either don't get England defensive coverage or I dump them on the wc so that I can get defensive coverage and have a slot open to get Rooney in GW3, as he is the best attacking option for England from then.

IMO Spain will score easily against Italy and iniesta tends to be involved tho I am concerned about the assists rule, they could be harder to come buy,
This copper fastens what's being said on here in relation to a stronger def utilising the ' recovered balls ' rule . (imagine if the macdonalds panel took a visit to a gentlemans club, I could see a lot of points given on the spot !

Alba or Debuchy could get cleanies. I wouldn't be confident of an Italy CS but there could be a lot of recovered ball points against Spain. I wouldn't back England or Germany for a GW1 CS. Holland have s decent chance of a cleanie.

Or keep Zhirkov and change keeper.

to get Holland I need to dump either Sniejder or Robben. I could keep Zhirkov, but what keeper to get, can't go Poland or Greece, could get Cech but then I'd e doubling on them. So I'm looking at Buffon, Lloris or Hart.

well this place certainly helped. TBH this year is the first year I have gone all out on it, was just playing casually until my work league started and we put some cash into it. But learning about things like keeper rotations and stuff from the posters on here helped me hugely.

I thought de Rossi was more of a box to box midfielder for Italy, taking the occasional free kick and being a threat in the air at corners. has he just changed to a sitting in front of the back 4 DMC now?

I agree with your comment though of the 3 midfielders Rossi is the most defensive. He does score goals but 9m is far too much.

Close to mine below, so must be good! 🙂

I don't see Given getting many CS so went for a cheapy Greek GK who has more chance, this does mean you need to pick a GW from another group though, hence Hart.

Wasn't sure on Strinic starting, plus wanted Kadlec due to the pens.

Benzema was also on my list but then I would have to play him against England, to dangerous that I accidently cheer in the pub when he scores. Still might swap Sneijder for Xavi and then swap Robben for Benzema GW2.

Okay, think this team looks sorted for GW1/2, plan the WC for GW3 considering rotation that may occur.

    Tzorvas
    Kadelec / Papa / Zhirkov
    Mandzukic / Ozil / Snejider / Iniesta / Polanski
    Robben / Lewandowski

    Sub (all 11/6) : Hart / Debuchy / Ibra / Olsson

I can't see why they shouldn't give a place to the winners, I mean then maybe teams like Spurs wouldn't just play youth sides in it.

Surely winning the Europa makes you more of a Champion than 4th place in Germany, Spain or England?

They could find a place from somewhere, I don't see why not..

High interest in league spots, but dividing entire euro lineup between 16 teams seemed unreasonable. With two divisions, there is only competition form 7 other teams in the draft.

Bidding just opened. I had sent an email two first league before 2nd started and poll leaned towards deadline of 1st for the first deadline. Unless there is a push for an earlier date, all the divisions will have 00.00 o'oclock on the 1st as their first deadline. (I had the 27th as the other first deadline option)

How much is City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak worth? Or is he just a well paid employee of Sheikh Mansour?

Well this looks interesting. Completely different deal.

Anyone decided on this game? I'll definitely have a team and see who has MLs.

Hi Archie, dragged off sorry. I'll have a go at McD's and this one and swerve the bidding options I think.

We all may not like Chelsea, but Drogba is just legendary. Yeah he divesa, acts a lot but he's got a phenomenal talent. Always will be a legend. Farewell Drogs.

Agreed. I don't want to like him, but I am forced to acknowledge has talent and is a legend. I would be torn if he came to the MLS. Same with Ballack. I would probably be fine with it if either came to Chicago or Columbus :p
