We continue the analysis of next month’s Euro 2012 tournament in Poland and Ukraine by taking a look at another of the competition’s favourites. Having already run the rule over Denmark and Germany in Group B, we turn our attentions to the runners-up in the 2010 World Cup, Holland:

Bert Van Marwijk’s side get the ball rolling in Group B with a 5pm clash against rank outsiders Denmark on Saturday June 9. Following on from that is an eye-watering showdown with Germany, which takes place on Wednesday June 13 at 7.45pm, before they pit their wits against Portugal in their final group match on Sunday June 17 at 7.45pm.

This group has, arguably, more potential for goals than any other. Germany won all 10 of their qualifying matches, scoring 34 times in the process, and also thrashed the Dutch 3-0 in a friendly last November. Denmark may be the underdogs but demonstrated their capabilities by finishing above Portugal in the qualifying rounds, forcing Cristiano Ronaldo et al to defeat Bosnia Herzegovina in the play-offs to seal their progress.

The Road to Qualification

Van Marwijk’s men breezed through qualification with nine wins and one loss in their six-team group; the defeat, at second placed Sweden, occurred after Holland had already clinched top spot in the group. The Dutch racked up 37 goals, scoring more than two goals on five occasions – the highlight being an 11-0 home win over San Marino – and conceded just eight, with a total of six clean sheets accrued.

Most Appearances: Mathijsen & Van der Wiel (10), Huntelaar, Pieters & Kuyt (9)

Top Scorer: Huntelaar (12), Van Persie & Kuyt (6), Sneijder & Afellay (3)

Top Assists: Sniejder & Kuyt (6), Van der Wiel (3)

The Likely Lads

Gregory Van der Wiel is far from cheap in the McDonalds game. The right-back comes in at 7.0 and, with Germany and Portugal offering a strong attacking presence, many Fantasy managers will likely avoid the Dutch defence. Those afore-mentioned six clean sheets, in addition to a trio of assists, highlight Van der Wiel’s possible potential at both ends of the pitch, however, and with starts nailed-on and an ownership of 3.9%, he could be a decent differential.

Coming in at 9.5 in the McDonalds game, Wesley Sneijder has already received plenty interest, with 23% of Fantasy managers snapping up his services. Playing in the hole in Holland’s 4-2-3-1, Sneijder returned three goals and six assists in eight appearances over the qualifying campaign and, after a frustrating injury-plagued campaign with Inter, will be keen to steer his country to success. Aside from his obvious talents and likely set-pieces, Sneijder’s appeal is furthered by the fact that Dirk Kuyt and Arjen Robben – the other two near-certain starters in the attacking midfield three – have both been classified as forwards in the McDonalds game.

Injury prevented Arjen Robben from playing any part in the qualifying campaign but, back to full fitness, his contribution on the flank will play a pivotal part in Holland’s attacking forays. Priced at a reasonable 9.0, the Bayern Munich man could appeal to those Fantasy managers looking to take advantage of the uncertainty surrounding the lone forward role; a double in Holland’s 3-2 win at Wembley highlights his importance to the side, though Robben will need a morale boost after that crucial penalty miss in the Champions League Final against Chelsea.

Cheeky Punt

With only one forward role available in their favoured formation, it could well be a straightforward battle between Robin Van Persie and Jan-Klaas Huntelaar to lead the line. While Van Marwijk has recently insisted both could play together, it remains to be seen if that is the case if Holland have a fully fit squad to choose from. Certainly, Robben’s enforced absence afforded them the chance to do so doing qualification with the Arsenal skipper out wide but, with the Bayern man now fit and raring to go, his manager has a huge decision to make. Both players are priced at 11.0, though Huntelaar has the potential to be a huge differential, with just 4% ownership to Van Persie’s 32.7%. At this point, it’s difficult to snap up either player with full confidence; Huntelaar started and scored against Bayern Munich last night but Holland have three more friendlies still to follow, though, and by the time the tournament gets underway, we should have hopefully more than guesswork to go on.

Priced at just 7.5 in the McDonalds game, Dirk Kuyt is an intriguing prospect. While his domestic campaign with Liverpool has been disastrous, Kuyt provided as many assists as Sneijder and scored as many as Van Persie in qualifying – the fact he missed just one game indicates Van Marwijk’s faith in his abilities. The Liverpool man seems to be ahead of Huntelaar in the penalty pecking order – he scored from the spot in a friendly against Austria when the latter was still on the pitch, though it’s worth noting that Van Persie didn’t play any part in the match. With an ownership of just 4%, Kuyt could be one worth considering, with many Fantasy managers choosing to overlook him in favour of the bigger names amongst the Dutch squad. He underlined his potential by providing an assist in last night’s 3-2 defeat by Bayern Munich.

Hi GINKAPO, The way i read it was the default trnsfer system meant anyone could dip into the free agent pool whenever they wanted to.This seemed to me to be a bit unfair (swapping players between games etc). There was another option where you could enforce a transfer window, e g after the group games, where another mini auction would place. I personally felt this seemed a bit fairer and could add to the fun.Another option would be to not allow transfers at all. Keen to hera what you think,
            cheers, Dave

I think I have selected transfer windows enforced by the chairman. Although whether I doubt I will set any up as I reckon it should be no transfers.

Yeah, but this is a football tournament. Sneijder and Robben play in the two positions, where there's a firm No.1. They wont get rotated unless they've won the group with a game to spare which is highly unlikely. It's the other positions where the Dutch will rotate. Can't really compare to city's squad in a league campaign where fatigue is an issue.

Kuyt has confirmed tonight that Hamburger SV want to sign him, but that "there are also other offers". Liverpool's asking price would be around €1 million, but Kuyt's high wages would be a sticking point for HSV.

Yes, I posted that news on here this afternoon. Bild is often an unreliable source, but they're quite specific on the details this time. Not a done deal yet though.

Your keepers play the same day, change one of them. If you are wildcarding GW2 then downgrade Buffon, no point having double Italy defence against Spain. Apart from that and Andrews it looks good.

Didn't do one yesterday out of laziness but here's my thoughts on the Germans:

    THE DEFENCE

Including friendlies, Germany have played 19 matches since their qualification campaign began. Of those 19 matches, they only managed 6 clean sheets and conceded an average of over a goal per game. Add this to the fact that they will be playing against some of the best offensive players on the planet in this year’s ‘Group of Death,’ then clean sheets don’t look too likely.

If you are tempted to have a German defensive asset in your team, then Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer may be a decent option. His last international appearance saw him keep a rare clean sheet against group B rivals Holland, perhaps a sign of things to come. However, going with any goalkeeper from Group B looks a risk and spending 7.0 million to acquire Neuer’s services is an added gamble.

The cheapest nailed-on defensive option seems to be Jérôme Boateng who will more than likely start at right back. He costs 6.5 million which, despite being cheap for the German defence, may be too expensive for most people who plan on spending their big bucks on the star midfielders and forwards.

    THE ATTACK

Over their past 19 games, Germany has amassed 50 goals so investing in a German midfielder or forward is a sensible option. 9.8% of the game have invested 9.0 million in the security of Bastian Schweinsteiger. The Bayern man has bagged a couple of goals in his last 3 international matches and it would be a surprise to see him benched at any stage throughout the tournament. There’s no doubt that he will provide a decent goal threat and a guarantee of game time.

However, those who have an extra 1.0 million to spare should definitely be looking at Mesut Özil. Özil plays ‘in the hole’ for Germany which led to him racking up 7 assists in qualification. His goal scoring record is also impressive, with 6 goals in his last 12 appearances. The attacking midfielder notched 8 goals and 22 assists in all competitions for Real Madrid this season so is coming into the tournament in great form.

Up front, many will be looking at the services of Lukas Podolski and Thomas Müller despite both mistakenly classified as forwards (arguably). Podolski will cost you 10.0 million compared to Müller’s 9.5 despite the latter scoring 2 more goals over the past 19 matches. Podolski’s Bundesliga form has been far superior, though, with 18 goals to his name this term compared to Müller’s 7. Both are very interesting options as they offer secure routes into the German attack which would prove massively profitable should the team go on a goal scoring spree at any stage throughout the competition.

The 2 expensive forwards (Gomez and Klose) will each set you back 11.5 million. However, it’s hard to argue against their recent goal scoring form, Klose has scored 11 goals in Germany’s last 19 games, Gomez has 8. If either of the pair make the striker position their own, then that player might just be irresistible for us fantasy managers.

every so often he comes up with a decent suggestion, like telling me to pick the players in the early kick off, or play Young over MOlsson as he's likely to score more points.

Then in the next bit he tells me to captain Akinfeev.
