The Watchlist – our mid-term playing recommendations – were updated yesterday with a minor tweak following earlier today. You can find these rankings in your right sidebar on the frontpage of the site.

This week shows plenty of movement in the Defensive rankings with Liverpool and Blackburn’s recent clean sheets prompting further climbs for their assets. While the Midfield top five remains untouched, there is a shuffle amongst the Forwards where Carlos Tevez pays the price for his one game ban and Andy Carroll falls from our top three. That means it’s Liverpool again who climb to the top of this table…

Let’s start between the posts where Joe Hart and Paul Robinson stand their ground at the pinnacle of the Goalkeeper rankings – form and fixtures keep them top of the pile. Pepe Reina, an expensive option but with superb fixtures and 4 clean sheets in 7, is their nearest rival. Craig Gordon and Ben Foster continue to offer value below him.

Aleksandar Kolarov’s ban and subsequent missing Gameweek this weekend sees him toppled in our Defender rankings with Liverpool’s Solios Kyrgiakos assuming his mantle with his strong fixtures, Bonus Point potential and a hefty goal threat. Outstanding form and decent fixtures has Leighton Baines climbing to second, with team-mate Seamus Coleman, back in favour on the right of midfield, our highest new entry.

Chris Samba’s fixtures has him installed in third spot with Kolarov holding on, along with United’s Rafael, to complete our top five defenders. Sunderland’s Phil Bardsley and Bolton’s Gary Cahill provide some low and mid-price options further down.

There’s no movement in the Midfield top five, with Nani and Samir Nasri holding to top spots despite a run of difficult fixtures to come. West Brom’s Chris Brunt – with strong form – and City’s David Silva – with kind fixtures – get closest. Florent Malouda is a major casualty of Chelsea’s continued slump as he drops down the rankings with poor form and an array of tough opponents to come. Birmingham’s Craig Gardner whose goal threat overshadows a difficult run of forthcoming fixtures, is our highest new consideration.

Look out for a shake-up in Midfield soon – the likes of Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Cesc Fabregas are all due back from injuries within the fortnight. Their arrival back in the Watchlist will certainly cause a major shuffle and could impact on the potential of others – particularly Samir Nasri and, in the Forward rankings, Didier Drogba; both players will have their role on set-pieces reduced and their spot-kick duties will also come under threat.

We also have to consider the Asian Cup and the absence of Tim Cahill during this spell. We know that Cahill will depart before the tournament in January to join up with the Socceroos and the latest from David Moyes indicates that this will be in the New Year which could well mean another five Gameweeks. Cahill remains high in the Watchlist then but that’s likely to change next week once the home fixture with Wigan has passed.

Moving up front and, like Kolarov, Carlos Tevez suffers a drop in the Forward rankings off the back of his suspension for Gameweek 17, with Fernando Torres taking top spot with a run of kind home opponents to come. Expect that pair to contend the top two for several weeks, unless Drogba can rediscover form or Dimitar Berbatov/Wayne Rooney catch fire.

Lower down, Newcastle’s Andy Carroll suffers his biggest drop of the season to fall from the top three with Bolton’s Johan Elmander and West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie the big climbers with form and fixtures falling nicely for them. The likes of Mario Balotelli, Asamoah Gyan and Jermain Defoe all enjoy climbs. The latter should have confidence off the back of last night’s brace but has Chelsea and two away games to come next, which tempers his appeal somewhat.

As always, keep an eye on the rankings leading up to the weekend – a full update will arrive post Gameweek on Tuesday but there could be daily changes up until then once the team news starts dripping in later this week.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Why all the respect for Arsenal? They're playing away, and they let in goals.

That is a really risky (c) that I don't think you need to take. Captain Nani.

Play Vidic over Ridgewell too. It's quite possible that Vidic will score from a set piece.

Not bad at all for this week.

If you're not going to play Kuyt against Newcastle in this state, you might as well not have him. Save the funds, downgrade to someone cheaper, and use the money to revamp your strikeforce in the future.

Thanks Camzy, I only bought him as a VDV replacement as I didn't think he would drop in price. Plan is to get VDV back in for him once fit. I was going to play him but thought Brunt was a better chance of scoring more points this week??

I should be either be between Kuyt or Brunt. Don't bench the top scoring striker at home. It's really a toss up.

You'll want to downgrade A. Cole or Kuyt and maybe try to get Tevez/Kolarov

Have Kolarov already. Was thinking the greek in for Cashley this week as another option. Or just leave it and do them both next week. Cashley out and VDV back in for Kuyt? Then upgrade Berba to Tevez/Torres the week after

        Team Atm is

        Foster
        Acole GCahill Coleman (Tamas Jara)
Nani (c) Jarvis Nasri MGP Morrison
        Drogba Rooney (Tevez)

Morrison got a lot of shots away last game but they were all poor tbh..

I'd be getting Kyrgiakos the week after anyway (week 18) so makes sense to do it now ?

I am somewhat, but I think Kyrgy/Kolarov are better options, Blackburn were very very lucky to keep a CS last game, Wolves hit the post twice and Robinson made some crazy saves

    Nani/cahill(c)/MGP/Nasri/Nzog
    Carroll/Drogba (Tevez)

Only got Tevez last week so could do Tevez to Elmander and then back again next week. Thoughts? Is it worth doing this and losing enrique for a 4pt hit as well, Huth maybe?

If it were me I'd go for Samba or Kyrgiakos since you'll get at least a few game weeks out of them. If you go Elmander your locked into 2 trades which you might regret next week. Can't say Elmander won't go big this weekend but, can't count on it either.

Newcastle have a tough run of fixtures and with uncertainty surrounding the new manager I would avoid Newcastle commitments until you see how they are performing. The next four look hard to get a big score in if anything.

I know i seem to do it once a week or so, but really not sure what to do with the team this week:
    Krul (Carson)
    Ferdinand Coleman Samba (Kolarov Gohouri)
Adam Nani Cahill (c) Bale Albrighton
    Drogba Piquionne (Tevez)

Here's what's on my list of things to do:
    - Potentially downgrade Rio to Fabio
    - Upgrade Cahill->Cesc and Bale->VDV (when fit)
    - Upgrade Piquionne->Odemwingie
    - Upgrade Krul->probably Gordon

Not really sure where to start. Thoughts? Anything else that needs to be done this week?

I have both Tevez and Drogba and also want to get Torres in.

To be honest I hadnt even considered getting rid of Tevez for him, I think it has to be Drogba (basing it on fixtures and form and how shockingly bad and disinterested he looked last night against Marseille) and i'm about 85% sure thats what i will be doing tomorow.

      Hope this helps.

Its their next three that are hard, Spurs, Man Utd and Arsenal, thenthey have a decent run.
Liverpool have five pretty easy fixtures in a row now so I def think its worth getting Torres in for Drogba and come Chelsea's decent run of fixtures, if Drogba is back on form then I will be taking him back.

        Thats my plan anyway 🙂

The N'Zog benching makes sense to me. Given the state of the Arsenal defence I think that Nani (c) makes lots of sense. Before getting shot of Drogs, I would wait for news on Gerrard. If he's playing then it would be worth getting in Torres and even giving him the armband.

I agree with Ernie. Wait to hear news on Stevie G & Torres. Elmander also good capt at home vs BB that don't travel well.

Have we heard whether Torres will be back at all this week? What's the Liverpool policy on paternity leave?

Elmander did nothing against BLP at home, so I will never be confident in giving him the armband. On the other hand I support Arsenal and would hate Nani to score, but for a good FPL score you have to push personal feelings away 🙂

Elmander was unlucky though not to score that day.

Who to bench out of this all-star attacking line-up?

    MGP, Nani, Cahill, Nasri, Bale
    Berbs, Carroll, Elmander

Indecisive doesn't even begin to describe my frame of mind...

+1. It's close between Bale and MPG. As Bale plays at home, I'd bench MPG as well.

Caroll is something worth considering. He may not do as well against Liverpool with there 2 centre backs being pretty good in the air.

Kyrg and Skrtel poor in the air?

As a Toon fan, I would always be nervous about benching Carroll - this team seem to pull great performances out of their backsides at the most unlikely moments.

I mean Kyrg and Skrtel are good in the air so Carrol may be worth benching out of the options.

If that's right it would make absolutely no sense for him. Can't see him get into the first XI. He would just replace Kranjcar on the bench...

agreed. Think his performances this season its obvious to see his mind isnt quite on it.
