Can FPL managers still rely on Liverpool assets for Double Gameweek 19?

SOUTHAMPTON 1-0 LIVERPOOL

  • Goals: Danny Ings (£8.3m)
  • Assists: James Ward-Prowse (£6.2m)
  • Bonus points: Ings x3, J Stephens x2, Bednarek x1

DOUBLE TROUBLE

Liverpool assets put in the worst possible audition for Double Gameweek 19 as they slumped to a 1-0 defeat to Southampton on Monday night.

During their last Premier League match before they host Manchester United and Burnley, the Reds struggled to offer much in the way of attacking quality, continuing a concerning trend ahead of the upcoming mini chip season.

Over the three matches that followed the 7-0 win at Crystal Palace, Liverpool have scored just one goal and taken two points from a possible nine. Such an achievement is all the more discouraging considering they faced West Bromwich Albion, Newcastle and Southampton.

For the first time since May 2018, Jurgen Klopp’s men have now failed to score in back-to-back league matches, having found the net in each of their 21 previous outings.

“What was disappointing (about the defeat)? How long have we got? We were not good enough. It’s our fault, my responsibility, that’s it.” – Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool can hardly protest at their misfortune either as they failed to register a shot on target until the 75th minute when Sadio Mané (£11.9m) finally found some space to shoot but tested Fraser Forster (£4.0m) only with a low, scuffed effort.

That was the longest the Reds have had to wait for an accurate effort in a Premier League match since December 2015, 89 minutes into a 2-0 defeat at Newcastle two months into Klopp’s Liverpool tenure.

“We were dominant in the right areas, had the moments but then the decision-making was not that good. The last pass, we missed the last pass. I heard now we only had one shot on target; we had a lot of shots next to the target which we did not finish, but even with them we probably did not have enough for the moments we had. Our fault, my responsibility and that’s it.” – Jurgen Klopp

ALWAYS CAPTAIN… WHO?

Fantasy managers considering Mohamed Salah (£12.6m) for the Double Gameweek 19 captaincy are almost certainly having second thoughts in the break between Gameweeks 17 and Blank Gameweek 18.

After scoring 16 points as a substitute against Crystal Palace, the Egyptian has now blanked in each of his last three Premier League appearances.

That is the longest he has gone without an attacking return in 2020/21 and, against Southampton, there was very little in the way of straws to clutch at.

Most of Liverpool’s play went down the left-hand side through Andrew Robertson (£7.4m) and Mané on Monday night, their crosses into the box well dealt with by Jack Stephens (£4.6m) and Jan Bednarek (£4.9m) before they could get through to Salah. As a result, Southampton now have more clean sheets in the last four matches (three) than any other side.

Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.8m) also impressed in his handling of Liverpool’s left-sided attackers and in one of the rare moments where Mané got the better of him, the cross was just too high for Salah to get over it, his effort going over the bar.

Meanwhile, the right-winger’s link-up with Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.3m) was virtually non-existent as the Englishman had one of his worst games in a Liverpool shirt to date. He gave the ball away 38 times against Southampton, the most of any player in one match this season – and he only featured for 77 minutes before James Milner (£5.3m) replaced him.

So then… what now for Salah as a captain candidate in Double Gameweek 19? After all, Kevin De Bruyne (£11.6m) scored a double-digit haul operating as a false-nine at Chelsea and faces Crystal Palace and Aston Villa in that round.

Meanwhile, both of Bruno Fernandes‘ (£11.3m) Double Gameweek 19 matches are on the road, where he has produced 10 points per game this season.

And the other advantage they have over Salah is another chance to impress. It is clear that Liverpool have serious attacking problems right now but the only chance Fantasy managers will have to assess whether or not they have made progress in solving them is a third-round FA Cup tie against Aston Villa on Friday.

However, how much we will be able to read into that match remains to be seen. Considering the busy December schedule, which does not let up in January, Klopp and Dean Smith are almost certain to chop and change their teams.

As a result, potential Salah backers have only the last three matches to rely on for their captaincy decision – and they were not encouraging.

By contrast, De Bruyne and Fernandes both feature in Blank Gameweek 18 bringing their existing form into relatively appealing matches likely to allow for encouraging Double Gameweek 19 captaincy auditions.

“They are football problems; yes, we are worried about that but football problems you solve with football and that’s what we are working on. We know about the situation, we are not silly, and we have to show a reaction, 100 per cent.” – Jurgen Klopp

SITTING ON DEFENCE

Liverpool’s Monday-night defeat did not do wonders for their defensive assets ahead of Double Gameweek 19 either.

Once again, they were patched up in that department, Jordan Henderson (£5.4m) dropping into centre-back alongside Fabinho (£5.4m) in Joel Matip‘s (£5.4m) continued absence.

However, a lapse in concentration during an early James Ward-Prowse (£6.2m) free-kick from Alexander-Arnold allowed Danny Ings (£8.3m) to nip in and find the net.

“His finishing is quality but he works hard for the team too. It is important that he is fit and he’s back.” – Ralph Hasenhüttl

Interest in Liverpool defenders had been relatively high for this game considering Southampton went three matches without scoring between Gameweeks 14 and 16.

They even came into Gameweek 17 with a number of key absentees including Alex McCarthy (£4.7m), Jannik Vestergaard (£4.8m), Oriol Romeu (£4.5m) and Che Adams (£6.1m) who missed out due to self-isolation, knee issues, a calf problem and concussion respectively.

“Oriol [Romeu], maybe one or two weeks out, so hopefully for the Leicester game he is back. Moussa [Djenepo], looks not so good. Che [Adams] is only out with a concussion, so hopefully also back as soon as possible.” – Ralph Hasenhüttl

They even lost Moussa Djenepo (£5.4m) to hamstring problem during the first half, making way for 21-year-old Nathan Tella (£4.4m), but still had enough about them to absorb Liverpool’s pressure and stretch the visitors’ defence on the counter-attack in key moments.

“(Djenepo) had a bad injury history with his muscles. It was maybe a setback. I said to him head-up, he will come back strong and I tried to give him a lift.” – Ralph Hasenhüttl

“We had so many injuries and still competed. I think the system works.” – Ralph Hasenhüttl

Southampton XI (4-4-2): Forster; Bertrand, Bednarek, J Stephens, Walker-Peters; Djenepo (Tella 32′), Ward-Prowse, Diallo, Armstrong; Walcott (Valery 82′), Ings (Nlundulu 77′).

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Robertson, Fabinho, J Henderson, Alexander-Arnold (Milner 77′); Oxlade-Chamberlain (Shaqiri 57′), Wijnaldum, Thiago; Mané, Firmino, Salah.

Cavani isn't banned for GW18 right?

I think he served one at Villa and then he has League Cup and FA Cup. Do I have that right?

Ugh not gonna get Martial then. I do think he's potentially a rotation risk.

I own Martial and he's definitely a rotation risk unfortunately, relying on him to actually perform to keep his place is frustrating with how inconsistent he can be.

Surely it's very risky to use BB in gw 19 now even if you 4 dgw players on the bench?

Could easily have 2-3 matches postponed with the rising number of cases

Yeah, no longer doing it personally. Abandoned that plan about a week or so ago. Still undecided on whether to use TC. If I did, it would be on KDB but I feel like it can be a bit risky as well since he may get in one of the 2 games

Im not doing it. Might consider KDB Triple Captaincy but even thats risky. Certainly not contemplating a BB. All your numbers need to come in for that to happen.

I think the spike was always likely over the Christmas period with players spending more time with family etc. I would expect the numbers to reduce back to a more normal level before BB19, especially with the players being in their bubble and regular testing ongoing.

TC chip for me 10 DGWS plus Brewster. I will make sure the VC is not from the same team.
If games are called off and I do OK on the TC chip it should see me rocket up the rankings. If I lose on the TC chip because games are called off - hard luck. But less of chance of it going south than the BB - which would have cost me -8 anyway.

I am not sure about that I think there is a good chance that Son will outscore Salah in one game v his two. Burnley will set up a wall and Man United will be favourites to beat liverpool on form.

Personally I'm losing Son from GW19 (possibly 18), Spurs' form before the Leeds game was poor with them not finishing off teams when on top and then sitting back defending a lot. I don't see Sheffield Utd as a great fixture like most do (they're the type of team that would cause Spurs trouble and they don't tend to lose by much against most teams, although I do still think Spurs will win) and I don't love their fixtures after it. Not that I think Son won't get any returns after that by any means but I think for his price you can use the money better.

For me it's a case of needing to remove both Son and Kane to afford Salah again so i've definitely gone off the idea. Will take my chances with one of them and improving both Brewster and DCL instead of getting Salah back.

Guys please stop transferring in City (and other) players. I can't believe price rises are fluctuating like there is a game tomorrow. We have a whole week to next deadline and City will play 2 games until then and I am not even talking about the doubled number of positive tests since last week. I will probably have to swallow at least 0.5-0.6 price changes at this rate until the deadline day for my planned transfer of Salah+Lamptey>KDB+Cancelo. I am not sure anymore if it is worth to wait or go with the flow and see what will happen.

In the same boat, was hoping to keep Son for this week then get KDB back in for GW19, but I can see him going up 2-3 times by the time GW18 starts. Now I feel I have to decide whether to do the move now or not (will involve a hit but that's going to happen regardless with GW19 moves anyway so it's really about whether I do it now or not)

The GW18 forwards are surprisingly difficult to choose.

Kane - I think he's a must purely because the guys below aren't reliable. Still though, he's expensive so there's even an argument to leave him out if you want to pack the midfield...

Lacazette - I think he might be the 2nd best forward for this week. Palace have the worst xGC in the last few matches (most of it was from that Liverpool game). Still think Laca is putting up good numbers though and is on form. Price is awkward.

Wilson - He's the only 'budget' forward worth considering imo. He's on pens, playing vs Sheffield United who are certainly the worst team in the division. But still, it's Newcastle and using one of your 11 slots on him seems wasteful.

Martial - If he finds form in the cups then maybe he's a nice pick, but Cavani returns for GW18 and they have a busy schedule. I can see him getting benched here especially with Liverpool as the next game.

Cavani - Banned until this game which means we'll have no idea if he'll start or not. Not worth the risk imo especially when you can get Fernandes and Rashford instead.

Richarlison/DCL - These guys are a bit punty. I kinda like Richarlison as a pick just for the pens and for differential potential but for just 0.4m you can get Lacazette who seems a much nicer pick.

Prefer the 1st 3 if going 3 up top.

As you say, Bruno/Rashford are a better way into Manu.

Lacazette and Wilson would be my prime front two for the DGW.

Laca vs an abysmal Palace side looks great for goals, Sheff Utd are very poor so I back Wilson to grab a goal and lock up the BPS - another classic 9 pointer. Then invest the rest of the money in midfield into Bruno, KDB, Rashford, Raz etc.

Lacazette's playing time is even more awkward than his price, which kinda puts me off of him.
I wouldn't worry too much for Cavani/Martial. Ole clearly said that Cavani will be a super-sub for some additional upcoming time, so I can see him starting in cups but definitely not in the league

But he's suspended for the cups and Liverpool game within a few days after the Burnley game. There's enough rest time so who knows but there is certainly a little risk.

Kane Laca and Wilson are the 3 I am looking at.

I'm keeping an eye on Kun for the next 2 cup games. If he starts vs United and comes on in the FA Cup as well, I might take a punt on him. It would be a big punt. But Brighton is exactly the kind of game, he could haul.

          Martinez
          Dier - Stones - Holding
Bruno - Smith Rowe - KDB - Salah (won't play)
          Bamford (won't play) - Kane - DCL

If you check the list view Goals conceded are 12-12
Although the team going through seems to have conveded more, Ryan didnt play so his 3 dont count. DCL had already been substituted, so that didnt count. De Bruyne also substituted before City conceded.
Ends up at 12-12 and a coin toss.

It's got to be the entire 11, otherwise someone who plays 5 at the back would be at an unfair disadvantage having likely conceded more goals because they had more defensive players.

Scary title, but then it concludes the article with:

"With low numbers of positive tests across the overwhelming majority of clubs, the league continues to have confidence in its Covid-19 protocols, fully backed by the government, to enable fixtures to be played as scheduled,"

Out of our control really, all we can do is just wait and plan our teams ready to hit the transfer button nearer the deadline

I have 2 FTs and am considering binning Salah for the DGW. Is it madness to consider Salah & Bissouma > Rashford & Saka? Both play in the BGW so would give me a team of:

            Son / Bruno / KDB / Rashford / Saka

If you will start B is the best option, for bench warming C is good enough.

40 more PL players and staff have tested positive for Covid 19, double the previous weekly high. No way I'm going to be using a chip in GW18 or GW19 if we get that far this month.

There was 1574 players and staff tested - 40 positive.
                  So i'm wrong 2.5%

but with less than half that number we have had postponement within 24 hours of the last two GW deadlines and lost popular players from other games as well.

Less than 1% have led to 4 games being postponed so far. So, there could be more games cancelled in the 2 GWs now. Add the FA Cup fixtures where teams will go outside the PL bubble. It's risky.

If someone uses the TC chip DGW19 and those two games go ahead - for example. And a few others fall by the wayside it could see a massive jump up the rankings.

Is it just me who is worried about the FA Cup and the potential of postponements there too? Unless they adopt a policy of "you can't play, you're out" and stick to it.

I'd be more worried about the FA Cup games resulting in more outbreaks with the lower league teams not getting tested as regularly as PL teams. Wonder if any have considered doing what Spurs did with Leyton Orient earlier in the season and paying for their opposition's tests to cover themselves.

            On WC

A Ings Rodrigo and Smith Rowe
            B Wilson bamford and saka

Smith rowe would be on bench from gw20

            Thank you

            A) Meslier, Steele, Chilwell
            -GW18: /
            -DGW19: Meslier

            B) Meslier, Martinez, Dallas
            -GW18: Martinez
            -DGW19: Meslier

Other idea? Actually I want to keep Meslier as number 1 and I’m not really comfortable to get Martinez on the bench. So maybe Is was thinking of Darlow for GW18 and then on the bench. Or should I just get Martinez as number 1?
