How holding on to your chips and transfers can lead to long-term FPL success

There is a lot of talk in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) community about the importance of patience and knowing when to act and when to wait is widely accepted as a crucial element of success.

But even a casual perusal of the desperate lamentations that echo across fantasy forums on a Saturday evening will illustrate that, while we fantasy managers often fail to act when we should, we very often act when we shouldn’t.

In fact, it’s very hard not to act, it feels good to act, especially after a bad Gameweek.

So why is patience such a virtue when it comes to fantasy football? What does science have to say about this? The answer might involve marshmallows.

The Marshmallow Experiment

Aside from perhaps the Stanford Prison and Milgram experiments (1971 & 1963 respectively), few psychological experiments have gained the notoriety of the Stanford Marshmallow Experiment (1972).

In this study, young children were sat in a room with a marshmallow placed in front of them and were told that they could eat the marshmallow now or, if they waited 15 minutes, they would be given a second marshmallow.

Inevitably, some of the children ate the first marshmallow while some avoided temptation long enough to receive the second marshmallow. And some of them just cried.

Salah benched as Matip returns for Liverpool's Palace visit

What was most interesting about the Marshmallow Experiment is that they followed up with the children 10 years later and found that those who had resisted eating the first marshmallow had largely scored better in their SATs, performed better in school generally and even had healthier BMIs.

While there is some debate as to why this correlation between the ability to delay gratification and these various measures of success should exist, it exists nonetheless.

Much like tomato ketchup and a certain Irish stout, good things come to those who wait.

While the results of the Marshmallow Experiment are still debated, the idea that there is a link between ability to delay gratification and improved prospects of success in humans has, for years, been supported by high profile and influential figures ranging from psychologist Jordan Peterson to motivational speaker Tony Robbins, both of whom, in fact, consider this ability to be among the most important indicators of success in both children and adults.

Applying the Theory to FPL

So can we as FPL managers learn anything from this?

Well, one very obvious parallel exists if you replace marshmallows with free transfers.

You can have two, but you have to avoid using the first one.

I’m a huge believer in saving the second transfer whenever possible and, while I’m not aware of any studies on the subject, I know that there is a fairly strong correlation between the success of my transfers, how well I’m doing in FPL generally and how often I’ve been able to carry a transfer.

The most obvious reason for why this might be is that, whereas with one transfer your options are limited to players within the same price bracket as the one you’re getting rid of, with two transfers you have far, far more options.

A second reason might be that waiting a gameweek to make two transfers instead of one per gameweek gives you more time to think and reduces the likelihood that you will make some sort of knee-jerk mistake that you end up regretting.

A similar principle could be applied to when you make your transfers. This season, perhaps more than any others, has shown the benefit of waiting as late as possible to make your changes.

It’s generally accepted that access to more, and more current information will typically improve decision quality and FPL is likely no exception.

Of course, being patient is easier said than done, especially off the back of a bad Gameweek where the temptation to make a change, any change, is huge.

Here, we might take a leaf out of the children of the Marshmallow Experiment’s book in that some, in an attempt to avoid temptation, simply put their hands over their eyes.

In an FPL context, this might mean avoiding looking at player prices or even spending too much time thinking about your next transfer until a day or two before the next Gameweek begins.

The principle of delaying gratification could equally apply to when you use your chips.

Serious FPL managers have long been distinguished by their tendency to keep their wildcards and chips until later in the season and, while it doesn’t always work out as intended, this approach confers all sorts of benefits including the opportunity to take advantage of Double Gameweeks, a typically higher team value to invest in players and more knowledge of who the best teams and players are.

Of course, there are also disadvantages to being patient.

Just as cautious cavemen in the Paleolithic Era were less likely to be eaten by sabre-tooth tigers, they were also less likely to find food themselves, particularly if they were too cautious.

The benefits of delaying action in FPL must always be weighed against the benefits of taking it and distinguishing which is the correct course and when, is and always has been a big part of the skill to this game.

However, knowing that a bias towards patience generally (be it natural or forced through will) is likely to produce better results overall, should be a positive step in the direction of making better and more deliberate FPL decisions.

I think it will be hard to get another DGW with as many teams having the DGW.
If FH has already been used, then it leaves WC a week before to BB on the DGW and be stuck with a WC team you dont really want for the rest of the season and doing surgery on it every week.....

Currently have 8 dgw players (no KDB)
plus Son, Kane, 3 x Leeds, Neto & DCL
No FT left (BB/TC/WC are chips left)
    Do I:
    a) Take -12pt then BB (Kane, DCL & Son > Vardy, Antonio & KDB)
bench would be Meslier, Struijk, Bamford, Neto.
    b) Take -12pt then BB (DCL, Son & Neto > Antonio, KDB & Lookman)
bench would be Meslier, Struijk, Bamford, Kane.
    c) Take - 8pt then BB (DCL + 1 sgw for 2 x dgw players (can't get KDB)
    d) Take - 4pt then BB (DCL for Antonio)
    e) Play wildcard > this team
starters = Vardy, Antonio, KDB, Grealish, Soucek, Fernandes, Salah, Cancelo, Stones, Justin, Martinez
bench = Meslier, Struijk, Mitchell, Decordova-Reid

    a) is my favourite but it does cost me Son and Kane
    b) Keeps Kane but I don't get Vardy
    c) no Man City offense
    d) bare minimum and still no Man City offense
    e) Great team for next few weeks but uses WC early

Welcome to the Gameweek 18 round-up of the Fantasy Football Scout mini-leagues and community competitions.

    FFSCOUT OPEN FPL LEAGUE

Will Thorp is the new leader of the Fantasy Football Scout mini-league (league code 5u05vz) after playing his Free Hit and is now 12th overall. Maruf Hossain, who had led since Gameweek 10, took a four point hit and fielded a seven man team rather than playing a chip; he is now level with Will on points but has made a greater number of transfers. Will has been playing since at least 2006/7, with one previous top 10k finish - 2,038th last season.

This is still the Best League in FPL based on the average score of the top five teams in each league.
Our current top five are Will Thorp, Maruf Hossain, Fionn Hayes, Markus Løland and Mr Ben Greener, all of whom are in the top 28 overall.

    FFSCOUT COMMUNITY MEMBERS LEAGUE

Maruf Hossain is however still top of our Fantasy Football Scout Community Members mini-league as he has been since he joined it in Gameweek 10, and he has a seven point lead over Ulrik Varela Greve who played his Second Wildcard.
This is now the fourth Best League in FPL. The current top five in this one are Maruf Hossain, Ulrik Varela Greve, Peter Barone, Adam Jenkins and Drew Jones, all of whom are in the top 94 overall.
It is open to anyone with a registered Fantasy Football Scout account – paid or free; the code is shown on the Members home page and in the Scout Leagues widget when signed in.

    HEAD-TO-HEAD LEAGUES

Ville Tuominen (Santigold) has regained the lead in League 1 and is now one point ahead of last week’s leader Tim Hill, who was held to a draw by Aleksander Våge Nilsen (AleksanderVN).
The highest scoring manager in our head-to-head leagues is Chris Astin in League 7 Division 18 with 51 points out of a possible 54. This is his 13th season and his best previous finish was 206k in 2014/15; he is currently 129th overall.
See our main Head-to-Head page for further information about the head-to-head leagues.

    LAST MAN STANDING

150 additional teams took their last chance to join TorresMagic’s Last Man Standing competition before the Gameweek 18 deadline, but it is now closed to new entrants.
The safety score for Gameweek 18 was 34 points, with 126 managers eliminated and 1,271 going through to Gameweek 19, when the elimination threshold will again be 9%.

    PROS AND CONS

Fabio Borges is still the highest ranked of our Pro Pundits and is now in the overall top 10k in 7,633rd position after playing his Free Hit.

The Fantasy Football Scout Network mini-league is for the Scout Network and includes six of the other ten Pro Pundits.
FFS Front End Developer Joe Collett still leads and is up to 11,563rd, increasing his lead over Babis Kokkinis of FPL Greece to 25 points after both played their Free Hits.

Jack Penn (ZoumasBloomers) is still top of the FFS Mods & Cons mini-league and is up to 15,367th overall, maintaining his nine point lead over Pro Pundit Andy LTFPL after Jack played his Free Hit and Andy his Second Wildcard.

    ‘TOP’ MINI-LEAGUES

Alaa Khaled Mokhtar still tops my Top 10k Any Season mini-league (league code: 8kcvzq) despite slipping to 322nd overall after a disappointing Free Hit and is now only five points ahead of Charles Hazel who had taken a four point hit in order to field ten players.

Marcus O’Toole is the new leader of PDM’s Top 1k ANY season mini-league (league code: 2agvvx) despite only being able to field eight players and slipping a few places to 3,608th overall. Last week’s leader Mike Varcoe is level with him on points after also fielding only eight players but has made a greater number of transfers. This is Marcus’s 12th season, finishing 682nd in 2012/13 and 3,379th the following year.

Mike Varcoe is however still top of Chaballer’s Hall of Fame >Top 1k< mini-league (league code: mr8dyh) despite slipping to 3,645th overall, 11 points ahead of Mark Phillips.
Mike is 358th in our Career Hall of Fame.

The aforementioned Mark Phillips is also the new leader of my Multiple Top 10k Finishes mini-league (league code: 8t42p6) and is up to 7,226th overall, ten points ahead of Burhan Samaan (Suarezista) after both played their Free Hits. Last week’s leader Peter Manning drops to fourth after taking a four point hit to field nine players. Mark has been playing since at least 2006/07 and is 44th in our Career Hall of Fame with five top 10,000 finishes, four of them in the last five seasons, the best of which was 1,065th last year.

Killingholme Clay is still top of the Top 100 Any Season mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/164835/standings/c) (league code: xptbn4) despite taking a four point hit to field seven players and slipping to 15,578th overall; he is now only 15 points ahead of S.E.A.siders who played his Free Hit. Killingholme has been playing since at least 2006/07, finishing 53rd in 2008/09. Does anyone know who runs this mini-league?

2009/10 Champion Jon Reeson (Westfield Irons) is still top of Simon March’s FPL Champions League and is up to 100k overall after playing his Free Hit, with an increased lead of 34 points over 2017/18 Champion Yusuf Sheikh who could only field eight players.

    BEST OF THE REST

Andy Short is still top of Skooldaze’s FPL Vets 2006 or before mini-league despite slipping to 2,117th overall, and is 60 points ahead of Tom Carroll after both played their Free Hits.

Damien Dunnion still tops Greyhead’s The Next Great and The Good mini-league despite slipping a few places to 7,578th overall, two points ahead of Daniel Coughlan after both played their Free Hits.

Denville Tyrell is the new leader of my January to May League (league code h62bh1) which started scoring in Gameweek 17, one point ahead of David White after both played their Free Hits. Last week’s leader Jose Clua drops to fifth. This is Denville’s seventh season, finishing 1,816th and 1,411th in the first two. He has already risen from 29,903rd to 5,121st in the last two Gameweeks.

Lol it's the 0 for Arsenal that matters FPL wise.

Not if you had Leno or Holding, or an auto-sub with a CS for Tierney, like I did?

Most people tripled up on Arsenal with just one defender. And most people chose Tierney as this one defender. Don't tell me it's not a fail lol.

Hi all, couple of quick questions

    1) Planning to captain Kdb...just cant decide whether to TC or not. thoughts?
    2) Start Taylor (whm, liv) or Bamford or get Shaw (-4)?

Captain fine, not sure on the TC. His minutes will be managed.

KDB is a waste of a TC even if he had a triple GW.

Somehow rolling into this week with Rash and Fernandes and no City cover bar Stones.

    How did this happen?

    A. Tierney, Kane to Chilwell, Vardy for -4
    B. Son, Lacazette to Grealish, Vardy for -4
    C. Son, Kane to Salah, Antonio for -4

Wouldnt bring Grealish in, though I have him so I'm not selling him.

My thinking is bench boosting this:

    Martinez | Johnstone
TAA Dias Cresswell | Dallas Dunne*
Salah KDB (c) Fernandes Soucek Grealish
    Bamford DCL*

    1FT 0.1 ITB

Plan is DCL + Dunne > Antonio + Stones (-4)

Open to thoughts guys and gals

Good moves, and yes I’d bench boost that.

I’d deffo go Stones personally. No doubt over his fitness, better fixtures and not at risk of rotation with Laporte and Ake sidelined. Plus City def is great atm.

Sorry, I forgot to add my third striker is Rodrigo. Would that change your view on bench boosting my team?

Really struggling to go firm on my moves this week guys, any help appreciated!

Steer KWP DCL to Areola/Johnstone Stones Antonio (-8) BB effectively gives me 7 extra fixtures this week.

It also frees up that 3rd Villa slot which would enable Antonio Neto to 4.5 Grealish in GW20/21.

    Martinez
    Coufal Dias Stones
    Bruno Salah KDB Son
    Watkins Bamford Antonio
    (BB 4.5 Neto Dallas Holding)

I like those moves. I don't think -8 is too bad on a BB as you are bringing in 3 DGW players for a non playing keeper, an injured player in DCL and KWP who has one fixture so you should see it like this...

      Steer 0
      DCL 0
KWP ? (ceiling of 9 I'd say though it's a tough game, more likely to get 2)

Stones DGW (ceiling of 13/14 in both games I'd say)
Antonio DGW (nice games too, wouldn't put it past him to bag in both)
Johnstone/Areola DGW (probably save points in both, though I fancy a West Brom cleany against Wolves)

Appreciate you thoughts! Neto has a knock so BB is off the table for me it seems.

What's the latest on Antonios fitness?
Considering doing Adams -> Antonio for a hit, but not quite sure yet.
    Thoughts?

Not seen anything mentioned from the presser today, I’m going to hold up until deadline before pulling the trigger.

    Choose one:

Wood (whm & liv) or Bamford (BHA) ?
