Who are the best FPL midfielders under £8.0m with form and fixtures?

Fantasy Premier League managers have more money in the bank than they know what to do with right now.

The reason for that is the ongoing struggles of premium assets to either stay fit, find form or combine the two.

At the same time, a number of cheaper options have made put themselves on our radar – but which of them can we trust above all others?

We asked members of the Scout Academy which midfielders priced under £8.0m were the best investments moving forward.

Manchester City’s Ilkay Gundogan celebrates scoring against Aston Villa

The first name on my list has to be Ilkay Gundogan (£5.8m). Even before Kevin De Bruyne (11.9m) went down with an injury in Gameweek 19, the German international was already making his presence felt, with five goals in seven matches. Without De Bruyne, Gundogan netted two goals in two matches, and is now involved set pieces, taking Manchester City’s penalties.

While most of his contributions thus far have come from his adventurous runs into the box and calm finishing ability, his assist potential has remained bubbling under the surface. Only six midfielders have created more chances than him in the four Gameweeks prior to Gameweek 22, highlighting his potential for even greater returns in the weeks to come.

Barnes matches Vardy's output over last four ahead of Double Gameweek

Leicester City’s Harvey Barnes celebrates scoring their first goal against Crystal Palace

With recent injury to Jamie Vardy (£10.0m) Leicester City are relying on a collective effort for goals. In two of their last three, Leicester have used a false-nine in Ayoze Perez (£6.0m). This strategy has caused an increase in penalty area touches, runs into the box and overall goal involvement for Harvey Barnes (£6.9m). With Wolves up next, who have conceded in 11 of their last 12 matches, I can see the winger continue to flourish in the next four Gameweeks.

Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish celebrates scoring

After a blistering start to the season, Jack Grealish (£7.7m) has gone under the radar recently. But his influence on the Villa team has remained significant and with the recent return of Ross Barkley (£5.9m), Villa’s attacking potential looks set to increase. As they face an Arsenal outfit facing injuries and bans in defence, he could have an enjoyable Gameweek 23.

Barnes benched as Leicester rotate for Brighton clash

Harvey Barnes (£6.9m) looks to be offering FPL managers an excellent option right now. Although the Leicester midfielder has been picked up by a healthy number of FPL managers over the past few weeks, he still finds himself in just 7.3% of teams.

With a healthy run of fixtures on the horizon, Barnes could be a relatively inexpensive way into a Foxes’ attack despite his Gameweek 22 blank at Fulham.

Who doesn’t love a bargain? Whether it’s going to the shopping mall for Boxing Day sales; hitting up your local thrift shop for a second-hand item; or clicking that link for the ‘flash sale’ in your inbox from your favourite retailer, there’s just something about getting that special thing at a discounted price that puts a smile on your face. Fantasy football is no different.

Before he was struck by injury, Diogo Jota (£6.6m) was suddenly in everyone’s squads as he helped form part of Liverpool’s ‘Fab Four’ and had us seriously asking if we could cover the likes of Sadio Mané (11.9m) and Mohamed Salah (12.6m) with him.

Right now, we find the ‘discount De Bruyne’ Ilkay Gündogan (£5.8m) who has quickly gone from 0.9% ownership, to a staggering 18% in a few months. Even with his price rising by the round, his attacking contributions and bargain price allow us all to splash the funds elsewhere in our side.

But one player I would like to point out, is Leicester City’s Harvey Barnes (£6.9m) at 6.8% ownership. He has produced returns in four of his last five matches.

Sky Fantasy Football: Sticks and Stones? Who to bring in before the Overhaul?

Bakayo Saka (£5.4m) looks like a great option right now. Having nailed-down his starting place under Arteta, he has had 17 starts and 18 appearances this season, he boasts five goals and three assists which is amazing considering Arsenal’s poor start to the season.

However, now Arsenal are finding some consistency in their performances Saka has the potential to add to that tally. With an xG of 4.84 going into games against Manchester United, Wolves and Aston Villa I think he can get some decent returns, especially considering his incredibly cheap price tag.

Pogba making case for FPL inclusion as United face more appealing fixtures

There are some very interesting assets in the £8.0m bracket, which is a good thing especially with so many premium picks being injured, rotated or not on form.

Ilkay Gundogan (£5.8m) is a more popular choice after the injury of Kevin De Bruyne (£11.8m). With seven goals in his last 10 Premier League appearances, the German international has found his scoring boots and has given Pep Guardiola an attacking midfield drive in the absence of the ever-reliable De Bruyne.

Paul Pogba (£7.7m) is the final iTD differential. Manchester United are pushing for top spot and with Pogba getting a rest against Southampton, he should be back for the Everton match. His individual experience and talent will be a huge factor in their pursuit for the top four. Bruno Fernandes (11.4m) takes the trophy for the best stats, but Pogba’s involvement in attack is continuously growing and will really be a factor in Manchester United’s success or failure in the title chase.

FPL In The Dugout

FPL Talking Points

As Ilkay Gündogan (5.8m) has become an incredibly popular choice given his performances over the last few Gameweeks, those who are chasing in their mini-leagues may be interested in an alternative option from Manchester City.

Bernardo Silva (£7.4m) has started the last nine Premier League games for Manchester City, and Pep Guardiola’s latest comments about the Portuguese midfielder indicate that he is finally back to his best. A goal and two assists in his last four matches show that might just be true enough for consideration in our teams.

In some late transfer window news, I’m going to keep an eye on how quickly Takumi Minamino (£6.0m) can break into Southampton’s starting XI after his short-term loan move was confirmed.

Finally, anyone who has watched Jonjo’s Shelvey‘s (£5.3m) performances in the last four Gameweeks knows that he’s been unlucky to only have one assist. He finally delivered on his promise by netting in Newcastle’s 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace.

Lamptey injury news, Maddison's haul and other FPL talking points

When looking at midfielders priced under £8.0m, there is only one man I can talk about, and I could talk about him all day, every day.

Since breaking into the Coventry City team at just 17 and scoring the goal to avoid relegation on the last day of his debut season, it was clear to me that James Maddison (£7.3m) was destined for big things.

He continues to improve his game every season, and with three goals and four assists in his last seven games, he is clearly a man in top form.

While a blank against Leeds may have concerned his owners, Maddison’s potential only increases with each positive update we receive about Jamie Vardy (£10.0m).

Maddison also provides the ideal combination of form and fixtures, with Wolves and Villa coming in the near future.

I'm thinking of making a season-defining change this week.

Getting rid of double City defense.

Salah is the weakest link in my midfield currently. And the best replacement given the upcoming doubles is Sterling imo (already own Gundo who I think is basically essential).

Liverpool have 3 awful fixtures in a row now - MCI lei EVE. It's a nice opportunity to get off Salah for a few weeks. If he starts to hit form again, you can bring him back in time for a DGW in 26 (if he even has one...)

Double City defense is very strong, we know it too, but freeing that City slot gives you a big differential, and if you have 5 strong playing defenders of say Coufal, Digne Shaw, Rudiger alongside Cancelo, you can probably match the City CS points.

Sterling offers captain differential for DGW 24, 26, 27, particularly 24 and 27 where City are gonna be the best captaincy candidates.

Not worth it. Insane value in City defence this year, I’m even considering a triple up as opposed to getting rid of the double up.

Same. I'm actually gonna bench Salah for the City game and look to offload him, but I'd worry about serious Peptation in that run, so i think my defensive double with Gundo will see more minutes.

City have the best defense and attack in the league. The defense everyone owns and gets you 6 points every week. The upside of gaining another attacker is considerable though and it doesn't feel like a huge risk. It's not for everyone, but I think it should really be considered.

It's difficult to get it right. Attacking points are spread.

Yup attacking points are spread at City at the moment, even amongst defenders like Stones and Cancelo. And also City’s attack is far from the best in the league, it’s at its worst in many seasons, both statistically and on the scoresheet

The best attack? Not sure on what basis. The attack has been humdrum this season - they’re a whole goal down on their standard output.

KdB was poor value really before he got injured and so is Sterling now. To get him in is to accept that you’re prepared to pay 11 mill plus for a 9 mill or under output

          1. Goonsquad245
            • 7 Years
            3 years, 1 month ago

KDB was poor value in output terms, but he was inches away from monster hauls in just about every game he played.

There really aren't very many good attacks this season - Liverpool have been the best statistically (xG total), with City in second.

            1. pingissimus

              3 years, 1 month ago

              Okay

But the next issue is how returns get shared. In previous seasons a City attacker was always likely value even with benchings just because there were so many goals to share around. There are far far fewer this season and value has fallen. The returns still get shared but the "cake" is much smaller.

There's a reason why everyone was on either or both Son or Kane after all. That attack was much better in FPL terms.

              1. Goonsquad245
                • 7 Years
                3 years, 1 month ago

I'm not sure I agree that returns being 'shared' is a thing, there isn't a finite number of goals to go around. What matters for me is the individual player stats and likelihood of delivering on that basis - KDB for example has around 1 xG+xA/90 this season which is elite, but he's run extremely cold on finishing (basically the opposite of last season!)

Son and Kane both had great underlying stats and are great finishers - which has combined into great results - but they're the only 2 from spurs that have anything like it which is why a disproportionate number of spurs returns come from them. City create more for more players, so there are more options, but we should evaluate each of those options individually, no?

I think my reasoning is fairly sound and isn't just 'differential for the sake of it'. City defense is good, we know that. If we could get 4 total City we'd all do it.

But the argument is that Sterling + Rudiger is gonna outscore Son/Salah + Dias. And with the DGWs coming up, I can definitely see it happening.

        1. Andy_Social
          • 11 Years

I think your reasoning is sound. I also think every decision is a risk - in this case you risk leaving a midfielder on your bench or unbought who hauls when playing both games in a DGW, while your non-City defender blanks. I think there are promising midfielders such as Grealish that will play more minutes than Stirling who will probably share time with Foden or Torres.

Got Sterling in this week for captaincy, but honestly I'm not sure I want to keep him outside of possibly the doubles. He's just miserable on the eye-test. Stays on the wide most of the time, doesn't look confident, consistently fluffs good chances (1v1, shooting opportunities). It's a good option, he could fire any time, but it sure as hell doesn't feel good to put all your marbles on him right now.

Only time will tell whether this will work but to be honest it seems like a logical way to find a differential right now.

Guess you judge it on the assumption that Dias isn't going to score more than 8 pts in those games. Anything more would be an outlier I guess.

As someone who currently has Sterling + Gundo + Cancelo I can tell you that I would feel far more settled with the double City defence instead. I had thoughts the same as you so I got there ahead of everyone else and so far it has not been even close to paying itself off.

It worked this week... Maybe you're right. Maybe Sterling really is just not worth it. But I'm struggling to find a good midfield replacement for Salah that I can ride through the upcoming DGWs. Sterling looks the best fit.

If Rodriguez or maybe a Chelsea mid emerge, that might be the answer, but it's looking unlikely.

With Vardy and Kane back soon and probably the most insane value in midfield around the 6m mark I have ever seen, the best move from Salah would probably be along the lines of a downgrade to Saka/Barnes territory and an upgrade in the forward position to Kane/Vardy.

I have triple City defence and I'm only reluctantly considering going down to 2. Yes, Sterling offers almost unequaled explosive potential but you're going to want to captain him (as you are) you need to be able to know he's going to start a given game.

And as we have seen with Pep, sometimes the best fixture on paper is the one he rests his best assets in. I'd much rather take that rotation hit on a 5.5m defender than an 11.5m midfielder who I have captained for a cameo 2 pointer.

I am moving to two premium strikers in Vardy and Kane. I had already started this when they got injured in succession. But this is also as I need to catch up a bit in my leagues.

Thus going for a couple of cheaper mids and premium defenders/GK - Leicester, Soucek, Saka in midfield, and also looking at how Chelsea will do now when the team settles.

KDB is soon back, and then I expect Gundogan to be less valuable, even if a steal at these prices and in this form.

Sterling is too expensive for me for what you get. A bit similar to Salah now that he/LFC is not consistent.

Having Cancelo doesn't even feel like owning a defender tbh. I am happy with Gundo/Cancelo/Dias mainly because I think they are the best any rotation option. Maybe if KDB gets back I would look at Dias out but other issues really.

This is a good strategy Camzy.

      I have two questions.

      1. If KdB returns in the GW 25 do you immediately bring him in?

City's defence is comfortably the best in the league whereas Sterling being better than Salah is questionable.

Gundogan is posting the points and stats to be as good a captaincy candidate as Sterling, and is more nailed, so if you're set on capping a City player, I'd just whack it on Gundo

        This is logical yeah.

But the Salah slot feels really unoptimized. And looking at the options available, Sterling is the best one imo and that unfortunately means that you might have to lose the double D if you want to go that route.

I'm not saying I'm gonna do it, but I'm considering configurations. Not this week for sure, but it's an idea for the short-term.

Big fixture swing for Man City though surely, just had:
BHA, CRY, AVL, wba, SHU, bur

      and now have:
      liv, TOT, ars, WHU, MUN

Now is the time to be exiting no gaining City players.
Especially premiums. Money ITB doesn't need to be spent for the sake of it.

One of Kane, Vardy and KDB will be back with a bang, even if it's only from GW25 (when all have VS fixtures).

I honestly don't think it's crazy to bench Salah.

This City defense is one of the strongest I've seen in a long time. They don't remotely look like conceding since they installed the Dias - Stones first-choice partnership. 13 games played, 2 goals conceded.

I'm doing it. People will say the idea of benching game's most expensive player is crazy, but I don't want to sell him too hastily. I want to see how Liverpool play, regardless of result, before deciding if Burnley/Brighton is a blip or a genuine slump.

With Salah and Fernandes, we seem to have two immovable players in our teams right now. Add one or two City defenders and 3 or 4 of our starting 11 most weeks is settled.

But looking beyond those nailed on picks there are so many mid-priced attacking options scoring well. In GW22 we had Soucek, Grealish, Gundogan, Maddison, Raphina, Antonio, Watkins, Bamford, Wilson, and Calvert-Lewin all get attacking returns. Those are the 5 mid-priced forwards I’m considering for my team.

Keeping the lessons learned the last few Gameweeks in mind, how are you approaching the next period in terms of team structure? And which of the players mentioned above will be in your team? Are you looking to rotate mid-priced options depending on fixtures? Are you looking to keep a strong bench?

    1. Mr. O'Connell

It's interesting that most of the comments are about Salah not being immovable - fine, I get that he isn't for some. For me he is though. I know there have been lots of blanks but I haven't been captaining him, and haven't needed the money elsewhere because of all the cheap options. Then I captained him for his 15 points last GW.

It's true he could be moved out but for me, there are other optimization moves that are better right now. I think also for anyone not WCing GW25 it makes sense to roll a transfer soon. Moving Salah out for a short period only to want him back in the future seems (to me) like unnecessary transfers.

Particularly with so many cheap options! I don't see a need to spend the money elsewhere right now, so even benching Salah for the cheap options one wants to play makes more sense to me than selling.

    2. Heiro
      • 14 Years

I am not personally sure how you can class Salah as immovable. I don't think hes had a particualrly great season and played so wide yesterday he may as well been a wing back. Lots of 2ft passes back to Trent. Nothing explosive about him at all.

Im looking at taking him out possible Barnes for a couple of weeks until the DGW is clear.

The back passes to Trent are infuriating as a Salah owner, but mainly because I would want to see Trent making more overlapping runs and occupying the fullback. I wonder if Klopp/Trent is worried about the makeshift central defence pairing and is discouraging risk taking from his full backs

I think you make a really good point. Thats exactly what it is.

Trent could afford to go forward last season relatively risk free which such a good CB pairing behind him. Now hes gotta up his defensive effort and thus reduce his attacking plays.

I didn't see the game last night but I was following the stats, possession, heat maps and action 'graphs' on sofascore and it was really disappointing seeing the lack of clear cut chances and shots on target.

Liverpool seem almost Spurs-like in their complete lack of a plan B. I hope they sort themselves out because it's great for the PL to have a team like Liverpool playing at their devastating best. It would be odd to think that their lack of flair might stem from missing a world-class CB but it's possible I suppose!

Credit to Brighton - they've always been better than their league position suggests, but the eye test showed Liverpool were really off their game. It wasn't one weak link - player or position; it was a collective malaise. I think Klopp correctly identified that they're too tired. He hasn't rotated like Pep and it shows.

Mind you, Bruno was looking jaded a couple of games ago - then bam! So nothing's certain, but I definitely wouldn't say Salah is a must-have right now.

Yeah agreed. There is so much FOMO with Liverpool assets, but Salah is like the 15th best player form-wise and it's seriously tempting to move him on for a while.

Transfer based on fixtures, strong bench, leaving much money itb

I’ll keep a strong bench simply because there’s not much point in not, considering all the money around. I’ll have Gundo, Grealish Antonio Watkins Bamford from that list. I sold Soucek for Grealish but as money isn’t an issue I should have sold ESR

Yeah I think a strong bench is totally acceptable and a good idea right now. For those thinking about selling Salah, I'd instead consider just having a strong bench and benching Salah, if you really don't want to play him. The transfers out and in don't seem worth it to me, with DGWs approaching

Salah is actually the least secure of my midfielders currently.

Liverpool look horribly inconsistent and their next 3 games are MCI, lei, EVE. It's an opportunity imo.

yeah, Salah -> Son an option for me, leaving funds for Kane. But means no Salah for dgw26 , as I have to plan my transfers for that now, having wasted my wc.

Salah's not immovable to me. I'm prepared to shift him in a 2FT if Kane returns looking sharp. Of the 5 mid-priced strikers everyone has, I'll likely keep Bamford and prob Antonio, but a firing Kane and Vardy should shake up a few squad structures.

Maybe the most interesting thing for me in the replies so far is the focus on Salah, when I expected the focus to be on the mid-priced options.

If it's just a semantic argument that I shouldn't have said immovable that's one thing - but isn't the desire to transfer out Salah reduced by the strength of mid-priced options?

If Salah is moveable, wouldn't you prefer to stock your bench with mid-priced options and just bench Salah, so you don't have to waste a transfer to get him out and back in?

Admittedly 16, 17, and 19 were tough for Pool but they scored goals in the cup and in 20 and 21. Brighton was back to bad but Mane was missing.

That's what I'm doing next GW. I want to wait and see if either Kane or Vardy hit the ground running, in which case a 2FT shifts out Salah if he's still underwhelming. Some will hastily sell him on the basis that you can't sit over 12M on the bench, but I overlook money and focus on points myself. Benching him leaves me with options open.

I think I'll be playing Salah, benching Gundogan instead

The next period of the season will be dictated to by the upcoming Doubles. So having a strong bench, from a variety of teams, is actually quite useful as it will give you more DGW options. We know city will have more than 1 upcoming double, most likely, so Gundogan needs to be one of the mids you have.
It doesn't matter which other players you have really as they're all scoring roughly the same at the moment anyway. You may as well rotate mid price options according to fixture as there's no one more expensive to spend it on! If I was to pick one, Antonio looks important to own for the next couple as they're weak sides he's facing and may pick up some captaincy in GW23 too.

Yeah totally agree with this analysis.

I'm thinking Brewster > a-forward-not-Antonio-or-Bamford this week to boost my bench

Yeah not much need for Brewster at present. Where are you at with Chips Geoff? Looking to BB in 26? I suppose the only risk in upgrading Brewster is potentially stopping you going to a Kane or Vardy (if desired) in the near future.

Brewster is someone I'm happy with generally but I am looking at going to 8 attackers. Likely BB DGW26.

Brewster, Forster, Mitchell will be sold. That gives me one more transfer to sell Coufal maybe. I'm also no opposed to hits as I used my FH and WC to get through 17-19 without hits.

This 'DGW 26' isn't far away, yet there's not much information about it.
Can we get one of these super smart articles on the likely ways this pans out?

Thinking of selling Salah for Son and captain using 1 of 2 free transfers ( if looks good tonight) as I like my other mids better

    A Sell Salah for Son
B Sell another mid- which one?
    C Don’t get Son

    Martinez (McCarthy )
    Dias Cancelo Coufal (Dallas Robertson)
    Salah Bruno Gundogan Grealish Raphinha
    Bamford Antonio ( Watkins)

I have the same dilemma and I'm probably going to hold (just) due to my chip situation (I want to BB DGW26 without using my wildcard).

Have two main dilemmas. Which one to start for A and B?

    A - Gundo v DCL
    B - Coufal v Stones

    Martinez
    Justin - Dallas - Coufal
    Salah - Bruno - Soucek - Raphinha
    Antonio - Bamford - DCL

    McCarthy - Gundo - Stones - Robbo

Maybe Lowton who is the cheapest as you have the option to bench him after these three games if you have other transfer priorities at the time.
