Five-time top 1k finisher on Double Gameweek players, captaincy and chip strategy

One of the world’s best FPL managers, Tom Freeman, reveals his team plans for Double Gameweek 24 and beyond.

Gameweek 23 has drawn to a close and it went pretty well for me, as I ended on a total of 76 points.

However, with the fixtures coming thick and fast, focus has already turned to the forthcoming doubles. We’ll find out more once this week’s FA Cup fifth-round ties are complete, but for now, we at least know who will play twice in Gameweeks 24 and 25.

With all of my chips still intact, it’s going to be pretty exciting, but I’m also fully aware that it’s a pivotal stage of the season which I need to get right.

So, in this my latest column, I’m going to note down some thoughts on the teams involved in this week’s Double Gameweek and also outline my plans moving forward.

For context, here is how I’m currently set up, with two free transfers:

Anyone tempted not to WC25 and BB in 26 and instead WC in 26 to get a strong XI??
I kinda like my team more in 25 than with a WC. Have triple Leeds for DGW25. Not sure if a WC25 and BB 26 is better than just WC in 26. Can use BB in 25 or later sometime.

    Thoughts??

Yes I'm considering using my BB this week (depending on Antonio's fitness) or next week. Will wildcard in GW26 with a strong squad of 12-13 players.

also considering TC on Kane in DGW26 if Spurs have BUR + avl/ful/SOU
      Fancy that more than BB

yes, I think I will BB in 24, get a couple of dgw players for 25 and then WC in 26 to get a strong 11 to see me through to a FH in 29

there are only 2 confirmed games at the moment for BGW29 - i don't expect the blank gw to be a high scoring week considering potential games to play

I don't think it matters whether it is likely to be high scoring or not, the key is whether I think I can outscore the top 10k (typically) average in that game week and by how much, and whether I can concentrate my transfers in the build-up to it by completely ignoring the blank ... its the big picture really

I think you want only a handful of games - if there are too many it reduces the effect of the free hit over those that don’t have the FH left and means they can still field a decent number. You want them to have the problem of how they put in those players especially if unfashionable teams that means they don’t really want those players before or after. With the FH it enables that one week stab at it bringing in all the main players playing and then revert back to your preferred squad.

      Im leaning towards that idea.
I have bench of Martinez Bamford/Antonio Coufal and Targett and playing bb24 depends on Michael's fitness.
Right now I don't see anyone with dgw26 who I can carry from until 29.
It would be a lot easier to bench 4 players like Leno, Bamford/Raphinha, Saka and Coufal in 26 and play strong 11 than try to bring all of them with hits in 29

    Morning DZ - DGW24

    A) Play double city defense - Cancelo + Stones vs TOT + EVE
    B) Once city defender + Bamford (ars)

I'm stuck between Soucek, Grealish and Salah

A lot depends on Your chip strategy. Without any of those, You HAVE to switch Soucek > Gundo. WHU plays Spurs and City in the next 3.

Soucek can outscore Gundo. That is possible.
But highly unlikely. Also Gundo is 2nd/3rd most nailed City player at the moment. He is playing great with or without KDB.
Soucek also proved what he is capable of.
You have to as yourself if you want to get back Tomas in next lets say 5gws. He is not fixture kind of player. He can score anytime. In gw27 when they play Leeds it is not more likely for him to haul than against Spurs - at least for me.
With Soucek you are realying on playing him constantly, every week. You can't bench him, You can't transfer him out. With Gundo, You have luxury of switching, at some point. You can predict what he may or may not do. Right now, he can score against anyone, anytime - same as Soucek.
Taking that into consideration, You have to ask yourself (another question...) - You rely on WHU or City attacking potential? And the answer is latter.

To me it comes down to money tied up in the player and fixtures going forward. Personally ive been looking at the same dilemma, with allmost the exact same players (dont have soucek, but dont have the funds to get Gundo in for him).
Salah will cost me 0.3, cause i do want him back. Same goes for Grealish. Which have made me come to the conclusion that it will be tough, if not stupid to get them in as i want them straight back again after.
Thats why i am considering a WC to change my structure as a whole to get Gundo in as well, and have a 5 midfield team.

Do you have alot of money tied, and do you want any of said players back?

      1. Pedram
        • 10 Years

I bought Salah when he was 12.6 so no money tied up here, Grealish however i bought at 7.1 and now he's 7.8.

I obviously would want Salah back at some point again (depends on his performance).

Soucek to Gundogan looks likes the easiest straight swap but then again i'm worried about his potential return against SHU, ugh why that red card got rescinded.

I cant see the reason for not WC'ing this week if one is going to do it next week anyway. Im not too tempted by any DGW teams next week except Leeds, and i will be having at least 2 of them going forward on my WC as well. Most likely i will either BB or TC in GW26, having 12-13 DGW players is by far enough in 26.

I just dont see the big difference in WC'ing 24 or 25.
If there is an obvious reason, could someone point me in the right direction so i can get my eyes open and not potentially WC this week when the DGW26 is announced? (I am of course not WC'ing this week if the DGWs are not announced by the deadline.)

Depends on how many dgw players you have for 24 I guess. I plan to have 6 with my free transfers which should be good enough. Therefore I don't think it is necessary for me to wc yet

No BB left, this is the plan. Sounds ok?

      GW 24 - Barnes to Gundo (c)
WC 25 - load up on DGW & long term players. I will bench those with a SGW that I want in the long term.
TC 26 - Kane (if confirmed double)
FH 29 - Big blank week, most of my mini league already used it. Could help me move up the ranks.

      Current team:

      Martinez (Steer)
      Cancelo Dias AWB (Mitchel, Mee)
      Son Bruno Salah Grealish (Barnes)
      DLC Bamford Antonio

Yes BB in 26. 14-15 DGW players outweighs any form other BB strategy for me. I have my FH and TC to play for a later week as well so can't really imagine there will be a better GW to BB than 26. About Leeds players, I plan to only have Bamford in my team who will then be moved for Kane(c) in GW26. Alternatively, I could also go with Dallas on WC then take a hit for a DGWer in 26.

Fair enough. Although i feel i am missing out on differentials like Raphinha Che Adams Dallas in GW25 if i Wildcard in 25 (BBin 26).
Dont want Che/Dallas for the long term. Also i like my original team better in 25 than my WC team. So will instead WC in 26 with a strong XI. Bench boost can wait later.

Is there any merit in saving FH for GW33 or 37(Whenever the later small DGW's will happen) if you can Navigate BGW 29 via a WC in 26(Having bench players who play in 29).

How? You can basically get XI DGWers in a DGW. Can get XI starters in a blank where others have 6-7 players (Thats 4-5 extra players). Its as good as a BB

I suppose so, ideally one would want 4 matches with low owned teams and none of the usual captaincy candidates. To me that still seems to be BGW29, so I'm looking at using FH then. Don't really know what BGW33 or 37 will look like, though

I feel the same re. Brighton defence, which is why I'm benching Grealish and Barkley in favour of starting 2 Chelsea defenders - Newcastle without Wilson ain't gonna score. That leaves Antonio - if he's injured that solves the last benching headache for me.

it will be a problem if you have triple'd on Man City..

Would be perfect for my season, tore my team up after the Salah carona scare and paid dearly and then had triple Villa full 11 for blank 18 before FH 19 and again had to tear my team up to my detriment...

People using BB in 26 tempted by TC Bamford or Raphinha in 25?

At least you know they'll start and play most of, if not all, the minutes in both.

I don't fancy getting burned by Pep roulette with TC.

Wolves would park bus and bore us out and Saints have their full defence back.

      Pope
      Shaw Cancelo Coufal (Robbo Strujic)
      Son Gundo Salah Fernandes (Raphinha)
      DCL Bamford Antonio

      1 FT 2 ITB

Thinking Kane next week which I can get by downgrading Robbo to 4.6 def. What should I do this GW though? Also do I need to WC in 25 with this team?

Can someone explain - there were people saying 11-12 DGW players not enough to consider a BB back in GW19, now suggestions that 5-6 DGW players in enough to consider it in GW24/25. So 26-27 scores was a waste but 16-17 scores isn’t. I could be looking at this all wrong, happy to be corrected.

I think its not about the DGwers.
Bench boost is applicable to 4 players only. Pick your best XI and see if your Bench is good enough to get you the points you expect out of Benchboost.

Next week my bench is probably
        McCarthy Grealish Antonio Sterling

And i am tempted even though they are not Dgwers.

Everyone got worked up across gw18 and 19 and have less room for manoeuvre into these fixtures.

Gw21 and 22 were ideal BB territory with squad depth following injuries etc.

Spurs are crap but are going to have a few DGW, a full restructure is needed to get in Kane!

      C) something else

      Pope
      Coufal / James / Stones / Cancelo
      Salah / Bruno / Gundo / Son
      DCL / Bamford

      Steer / Robertson / Wilson / Burke

      Which plan would you choose?

      1. 24: Martin Stephens to Pope Hamez -4 and BB with Martinez Robo Justin Bamford -> WC 25 -> TC 26

      2. 24: Robo to Lowton -> WC 25 -> BB/TC 26 - save one chip for later

Maybe even without WC 25 in both
