Group C moves into view with an “on paper” classic kicking things off, as Spain take on Italy in the five o’clock game. That’s followed by the Republic of Ireland’s opening clash against Croatia later this evening.

Our Dugout Discussion chatroom is now open to collect any real-time musings: this thread will do the rest.

The lineups for the opening match are in and there’s some rather surprising news…

Spain: Casillas, Arbeloa, Ramos, Pique, Alba, Busquets, Alonso, Xavi, Iniesta, Silva, Fabregas.

Italy: Buffon, Bonucci, De Rossi, Chiellini, Maggio, Motta, Giaccherini, Pirlo, Marchisio, Cassano, Balotelli.

Cesc Fabregas starts for the defending champions, as Vicente Del Bosque names a side with no recognised striker – an intriguing prospect, with the former Arsenal man likely to play as a “false nine”.

For Italy, Cesare Prandelli has altered his formation and rolled out a 3-5-2, perhaps in light of last week’s friendly defeat at the hands of Russia. Daniel De Rossi starts at the back, while Emanuele Giaccerini and Christian Maggio are given roles as wing-backs. Up front for the Azzurri, Antonio Cassano and Mario Balotelli lead the line.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Dear Mr del Bosque,

I can't see the logic in not starting a recognised striker when you have three more than capable strikers sitting on the bench!!

      Dear Mr Prandelli,

I can't see the logic in your crazy formation, playing De Rossi as a sweeper and starting Giaccherini who is uncapped and about to be murdered (not literally).

Balo is a massive risk for Fantasy owners. If he was playing in Group A I might captain him, just for a laugh - but only because I would know I had three chances to recover.

That's because the Spanish national anthem has been lyric-less since the death of fascist dictator General Franco in the 1970s.

Malafeev will keep his place? Probably.
      Andersen decent shout.
      Back 4 looks decent.
Sneijder may be injured, but will certainly play final game.
Will fabregas play 3rd game if Spain win today and against RoI? Similarly for Benzema/Dzagoev

Funny how prandelli wrote off mario a few months back saying his attitude was crap. Now he's starting their first game against spain. He'll probably score the winning goal tonight, then have the most cocky post match interview, before he's sent back to england for setting fire to the players hotel, celebrating with a couple of polish hoes. Gotta love this super mario
