Interview

World number one answers FPL questions ahead of Gameweek 30

The current top-ranked Fantasy Premier League manager of the 2020/21 season has answered your questions to help you prepare for Gameweek 30 and beyond.

Michael Coone occupies the worldwide number one spot after Blank Gameweek 29 so we invited him to join us for a live question and answer session this week, hosted on on our new community Twitter account, FFS_Community and in a Hot Topic on the Fantasy Football Scout website.

Find out what he said by reading our recap in interview format below…

Do you value a good hunch over the stats and eye test?

“Yeah I never really let stats influence me. I find at times people read too much into them. Who knows when form is going to change and the stats will start improving from there! Getting on a hunch early is critical to making ground! Sticking with stats will probably just maintain your position.”

the-case-for-diogo-jota

Has a successful transfer ever made you cheer in a public place?

Not this year unfortunately as i can’t watch any of the games in a public place with the pandemic. I got Diogo Jota (£6.7m) early in his first run of form and I was happy to cheer him on! Not sure if it was the Liverpool angle tho!

Looking at your FPL history, what changes in strategy/decisions did you make this season to completely turn around your fortunes?

Nothing massively different. I watched a good few of the games at the tail end of last season during a lockdown in Ireland and spotted some great players for cheap to go into my starting team for example Reece James (£5.0m), James Justin (£4.9m). Once I started strongly I kept a strong interest in it which made me plan my chips much better. Not Friday night pints with the pandemic either so I didn’t miss any Gameweek deadlines.

How many Teddy Bears do you own?

None but I’ll definitely buy one if I win it!

The Scout Squad picks for FPL Gameweek 3

Best FPL tip for a 10k rank?

I think it’s key to get off to a good start and if not play the Wildcard early. You need to jump on the cheap point earners quickly. Once your team is set I don’t like taking too many hits to manage myself through the season but that’s just me.

Who is your captain for Gameweek 30?

Probably one of the most difficult calls I’ll have to make! Not sitting on the fence but I could make a case for most players in my squad! The fixtures are just great. I’ll even struggle to pick my best first 11! Any suggestions?

What are you thoughts on double Liverpool defence moving forward from Gameweek 31?

I don’t like the idea myself! I support Liverpool but they can concede goals to anyone at the minute regardless of the fixtures. Think money is better spent elsewhere.

What do you look out for before utilising your Chips?

Yeah I probably didn’t plan for them well too much in the past! Very important to maximise them in my opinion. Try to get a full squad of double game week players for my bench boost! My Wildcard in Gameweek 25 sorted out my Leeds Double Gameweek followed by the massive double Gameweek and the blank in Gameweek 29!

What are your tips for maintaining a lead in a mini-league? I’m 12/30 points ahead of my nearest rivals.

No point in letting other teams influence you! You’re top for a reason, keep playing your own game the rest should be more worried about you! Captain choices are key

Injury updates on Gundogan, KDB and other Double Gameweek 25 team news

What was the biggest turning point for you so far this season?

I’ve only taken three hits but one of them was to bring in Ilkay Gundogan (£6.1m) in an early for his 19 point haul when he was just £5.4m! I enjoyed that.

Have you done anything different in terms of your approach this season compared to prior seasons?

I’ve kept my interest in it! When I started doing badly in the past I probably kind of gave up! The pandemic has meant no Friday night pints so I haven’t missed any transfer deadlines.

Rüdiger forcing way into Chelsea picture ahead of appealing fixtures

Mendy and Rüdiger or Mendy and Azpilicueta as a Chelsea double up for their defence?

Antonio Rudiger (£4.6m) for me. Much cheaper and I don’t think Cesar Azpilicueta (£5.8m) will get too many additional attacking returns! Have an okay bench though, just in case of rotation!

Alexander-Arnold and Jota as the Liverpool duo from Gameweek 31 and on?

I’m a Liverpool supporter so I’m biased but yeah not bad shouts. A lot of money tied up in Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.3m) though and I’m not confident of clean sheets! Don’t rule out Mohamed Salah (£12.4m).

Mohamed Salah and Ilkay Gundogan or Kevin De Bruyne and Diago Jota on a wildcard for Gamweek 31?

Very close call, all depends who will start for city against Leeds after the Champions League! If I knew they would start I’d probably prefer Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m) and Diogo Jota (£6.7m) but I think I’ll be trying to use all four at different times in the run in.

We would like to thank Michael for joining us on this week’s FFS_Community Question and Answer. We will have another next week ahead of the Gameweek 30 deadline.

What keeper do we see keeping most clean sheets till the end of season?
Keep Martinez for the long awaited double & upgrade second keeper?
Double Chelsea defence the new defender double up to have?

Never seen this place so quiet 🙂

with funds not being so much of an issue at the moment I like the idea of the Mendy and Martinez combo

      - Mart use for the DGW
      - Mendy for the easy fixtures

Thinking Mendy. He is on a roll and that D could keep form till the very end.
Will hold on to Marty for at least till after next GW and see.
Not doubling up on Chelsea D atm.

If your team is very similar to the top spot it may be better to use it sooner rather than later. With the imminent fixture swing though and many returning from injury, I feel you should see who the players hitting form in the first game after international break will be. Wait that one GW and then pull the trigger

Maddison being out forced Rodgers to look at his options up front - Iheanacho has taken his chance but difficult to predict what happens when Maddison is back

Room for both in the system Rodgers is playing at present (Maddison taking that Perez role in behind the front two). Barnes' return might complicate matters but the shirt is surely his for the moment.

Iheanacho bossing Vardy for shots (and goals) since they started this run in the team together.

Tuchel did the same to me. I brought in Alonso for DGW26 because he seemed like the preferred LWB, and I thought Chelsea would do better than many expected against Liverpool and United.

Which they did. They kept 2 clean sheets. But Alonso played 0 minutes.

This is one of the poorest interviews I’ve read all year. Either they’ve written the transcript incorrectly or the guy at the top isn’t the smartest - every sentence seems to end with an exclamation mark.

Real shame. Getting insights from the person at the top should be so interesting. Instead all we got were a loads of ‘yeahs’ and drivel.

Not sure what the reason for interviewing him in particular is. Must be because of IB. There are many opportunities to interview someone who is OR1 during a season.
But there are no insights in this case to gain at all.
Basically he lucked out and hence stayed motivated this season.
Looking at the history I think it is safe to say that this is a one off season.

I enjoyed the arrogance of the last few sentences of your post.

I wouldn’t take anything from his history - it just shows he wasn’t taking it seriously before. Which he hints at a bunch of times in his answers.

It’s not actually a hard game if you get a good start and apply yourself.

I went from 300k - 70-ish post Covid last year because I actually looked at fixtures and chip strategy for the first time in my life during the shutdown.

I’m doing ok this year too.

I also haven’t watched a single game of EPL in that time.

What’s your history btw, I couldn’t find it

Yeh, I've been playing for years never seriously, one Top 100K finish in all that time.
Decided to make sure I got a team out every week this season, mainly due to covid giving me more spare time, and I'm Top 15K at the moment
Apply yourself and hope you get lucky, that's the best strategy for this game

Glad you are enjoying it lmao.
My second to last sentence is hinting at the fact that he mentions he is sticking with now. Which just shows general weakness in my eyes to not see things through after a rough start.
Good for him he is doing well this year.
          Good for you also.

My rank is irrelevant to the conversation.
I am not saying I am better. I am saying though that there is nothing to learn from him in comparison to the ones who constantly manage to rank highly.

I don’t think there’s that much to learn from those that rank highly unless you’re a complete noob to be fair. If there is, they aren’t giving it away.

My interpretation of his history is he just valued a Fri night bender and sleeping off a hangover more than dedicating loads of time to an online game. Started good this year, everything is locked down, so it’s a higher priority. Not exactly “general weakness” IMO.

I don’t believe FPL is a game of luck or the average position on this site would be around 4 million, but it does seem that quite a few people at the top work hard to get a good team from the outset and then don’t fiddle too much with a few inspired selections along the way. There was a winner from Australia who said something similar.

I’d imagine there are quite a few players who map out all matches in advance to plan when key strategic changes are appropriate. I like to think that the game has an element of maths and working out the probabilities over the season but that might be overthinking it.

Anyway, I’ve been trying not to get too serious about it this time so whatever the secret is, is for others to work out.

Bit annoyed at this comment in all honesty.
The world number 1 has given up his time to answer community questions and even if you don’t think you’re learning a lot, hearing from someone in his position should still be of interest.
It gives a great sense of how he’s feeling and what’s led to his amazing achievement - even if it’s not all based on strategy and pouring over stats, it’s really interesting to know how he feels the seasons gone and we’re all the better from hearing from him.

Well we can use the disclaimer "appreciate his time and thanks to him for sharing his thoughts".
A for effort etc., some obviously have enjoyed it more than others.

No need for you to be annoyed at anyone who is critical of the actual content though. It is feedback after all.

But judging by the upvotes here, just the mere fact someone is answering questions merits blind praise.

I'm critical for the way the feedback was given, it's labelled a poor interview, but its the world no.1 answering questions to members of the community in whatever way he sees fit. Az, in the unlikely instance you come back to this post a day later, I’d like to reply to your comment.

First though, totally wrong of me to say he’s not the smartest. That was rude and uncalled for. And probably wildly inaccurate.

But I stand by saying it’s a poor article and I truly believe anyone being objective would agree.

That’s not to say it’s the interviewee’s fault. The job of the interviewer is to try to discover something of interest. And then to write the article in a way that doesn’t sound like the interviewee is just saying ‘yeah’ all the time.

My frustration is this is a missed opportunity. And at a time when the quality of writing on here has never been higher that’s a real shame.

              Hey SuperG, thanks for replying.
So the way this was structured was that Michael was sent questions from the community and he could pick the ones he wanted to answer. We're trying to be a bit less strict in editing the voices of people, in line with feedback we've had with the PP articles. This was Michael's first ever "interview" of any sorts, really hoping he does more, but this was a good entry into this weird world full of massive FPL enthusiasts. It would be great to have a proper sit down with him and really scan his brain, but you have to remember that people have time constraints, and actually the world no.1 giving up any of his time to chat, in my view, should be appreciated.

Seems like FPL is forgotten nowadays. Just logged in and here are my 2 dilemmas for the next gw:

    1) Who to captain?
    A) Bruno BHA(H)
    B) Kane NEW(A)

    2) Who to bench?
    A) Dias LEI(A)
    B) Targett FUL(H)
    C) Bale NEW(A)
    D) Watkins FUL(H)

    Thanks in advance

Kane not as strong away but I’d still think he was the better bet, especially against Newcastle (Brighton strong defence at home).

Not sure but Crellin is suggesting any rearranged matches are more likely to be 35/37 - I think the idea was that fans might be permitted by then.

It's bad enough people quoting Crellin as if he is all-knowing. It's even worse when they quote his analysis incorrectly. 🙄

The answer is that we'll know when the next TV games are announced and that will probably be sometime during GW30. Could be next week but don't hold your breath.

Haha. Think my money’s on Portugal between those two although just getting 11 on the pitch might be the first challenge.

If footy, close-ish game with I say portugal coming out 3-1 winners. If fantasy H2H then that portugal team absolutely smashes the belgium side! Not a bad differential squad at all...

It’s a pretty good shout for a BB although puts a lot of pressure on West Ham (thinking the Leeds BB earlier in the season). My usual tactic would be to BB the week after WC but it didn’t work well for me this time and it’s an unusual year. My guess is that there’s going to be a lot of goals in the last few weeks with tired players many who’ve got nothing to play for if you can hold on that long

I will this week if I can have 15 starters after I get Mendy and WC later. Will only have 4 single gamers in a DGW anyway and it's tricky to pick the bench this GW.

Why is Lingard a better shout than soucek?

    1. Ruth_NZ

Assists. That means a better chance of 2 attacking returns in a game and that means a better chance of a high-BP haul.

On goal potential they are probably similar.

More attacking. Against better opposition Soucek will be meeded for more defensive duties.

This article is a very good motivational booster reminding everyone that we all have the ability to be #1 in the world at least once. We just need everything to go our way 🙂

I don't want to be negative towards the person but it definitely sounds like there isn't that much planning into how he plays and yet look at that rank.

Why does every one of his answers end with an exclamation mark! I know that he must be excited to be number 1! But after every sentence is a bit much!

It's not really a problem though, probably a habit thing.

Wow, surprised at some of the comments on here.

Guys having a unbelievable season and fair play to guy. I read the comments on here first before I read the article and was wondering " what's the issue here"?
It may be unlikely he wins this but he's in the best position to do so, so good luck to him.

There will some shocking headlines if he wins though.

Breaking - FPL uses too many exclamation marks!!!!!!!!!

After 13 seasons playing he's having an unbelievable season, I'm pretty sure he hasn't been hanging around these pages asking everyone to pick his team for him every week, that get's my vote regardless of the inappropriate and shocking use of exclamation marks.......!!!!!!!!!!!

        Kept it light.

We're all able to throw a bit of criticism around but I was genuinely surprised by some of the comments.
He's clearly having a 'bit' of a season but he has been playing for years and obviously knows what he's doing and we all need a bit of luck to do well.
It would be unbelievable to be No1 with 9 weeks to go and to be asked to do an interview he probably wants all his friends to see ......and then they go on to read that stuff.
        Sheesh.

I don't have an issue with the answers he gives, but some of the questions are completely irrelevent. This was a great opportunity to see if he was feeling pressure, what help he was getting from others, what sort of attention he is getting, if it has changed his day to day life, etc, but instead he gets given a load of "A or B" questions, or questions on advice on how to finish in the top 10k when the dude has never finished near the top 10k. Disappointing.

Absolutely agree, so in turn that's not his fault and doesn't warrant the criticism.
No biggie, just feel sorry for the guy who must be kok-a-hoop at being No1.....for now at least.

On reflection, I think he knows what he’s doing and has answered the questions in a way that totally p*ss off the hardcore element on the boards. Stats, schmats, it’s all about hunches and exclamation marks. Pure genius.

What I don’t get is the relationship between “No Friday Night paints!” (Mentioned twice no less) and missing deadlines?

Is it that he has missed so many deadlines in seasons past by always drinking so much on a Friday night combined with never making a transfer BEFORE (or even at the start of/before things get too out of hand) said drinking that he frequently missed the 11:30am saturday morning deadline?

If so - that’s quite the advert for the dangers of alcohol abuse

Most couldn't care less about the exclamation marks and that apparently was more a cheeky comment as I understand it.

It's the actual answers (or even the questions themselves) that prevent the interested audience to get something out of that interview.

Which is also fair, not a criticism of current OR1 per se, but just that there is nothing to see here.

Does it sound harsh? Maybe, but that is what happens if you are more in the public eye (kind of).
