Meet the Manager – Hall of Fame number two reveals his Gameweek 31 wildcard plans

In Fantasy Football Scout’s Meet the Manager series, Joe chats to a Fantasy Premier League manager with a stellar track record of success.

This time he is joined by Tom Stephenson, who has shown a remarkable level of consistency over his 13 campaigns. Make sure you watch the latest instalment below.

Across his career he has four top 5,000 finishes and is in a strong position to gain his fifth this time around.

Meanwhile, he has one further finish in the top 10,000 and has not ended a season outside the top 40,000 in his last dozen campaigns.

This incredible run has propelled him to second in our Live Hall of Fame list of some the best ever FPL managers.

Among the stand-out moments in their chat is when Tom not only shares his plans for the remainder of the season, but also gives a sneak preview of the first draft of his Gameweek 31 Wildcard.

Can this strategic deployment of the game’s most valuable chip ensure Tom finishes the season strongly once again?

Elsewhere, Tom reveals his top tips for a strong finish and why patience is very much a virtue.

The last year has seen the world, including FPL, turned upside down due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Tom chats about he has managed to maintain strong Gameweek scores amid the postponements, surprise announcements and player quarantines.

Playing about with something different on week 31 WC

This is squad where 5-3-2 might work with some decent bench cover for likely rotation- what are views? I know danger is leaving points on bench. Leaves .8 m in bank

    Mendy Martinez
    TAA Shaw Alonso Dias Cresswell
    KDB Havertz Jota (Gundogan Raphinha)
    Kane Lacazette (Iheanacho)

That mid is quite light. Is it wise with the expensive D including keepers?

Don't think Laca is worth it tbh

I'm guessing he gets around 50% of Arsenal matches with awkward cameos thrown in and there's no telling which ones. I'd much rather have a nailed mid such as Maddison - not least because there are easy swaps in and out. Hard to see where you'd ever go from Laca.

Don't be disheartened, it could well work.
I'd drop Dias and Havertz but the rest of the team is quite interesting and could well pick up points.
May also bomb mind you but so much of this game is luck, no one knows the 'right' picks.

      TAA, Creswell, Coady, Azpil, Coady

Was planning on saving the FH GW 35 and beyond, but if Spurs do have a DGW 32 like Ben Crelin says theys might, I might be forced to play the FH in 33 because I'll probably have triple Spurs instead of just Kane.

Big rotation if there’s a midweek game before the cup final. Jose needs a trophy to spin the season as a success. He knows Spurs can beat City but needs every advantage he can get. Picking 3 Spurs for that fixture will be a nightmare.

Yeah. I’ll definitely go in with Kane and captain him. Silly not to. But I don’t think 3 is needed. Defence rotates anyway so in a double for a cup final there’s bound to be rotation. Bale is probably back to being a rotation player. Kane and Son is enough imo.

Kane and Son is enough imo and I wouldn’t be surprised to see at least 1 of these rotated. Still worth having simply to cover them though.

Oh for sure I wouldn't get a 3rd in for the double.

Rather doubt the rotation myself but you could be right. Kane is pretty much an immovable object and Son will be relatively fresh given his 3 weeks or more off over IB and before.

The way I look at it SHU in 34 and possible DGW in 35 creates an equal problem - possibly a greater one as it may be that much harder to get Son in then

There is an intrinsic danger in moving off one of the prime assets all season for players who have fixtures but dubious form.

      1. Flair
        • 3 Years
        3 years, 20 days ago

Spurs not doubling in 32 allows greater variation on WC and deviation from the template which could be critical to big rank rises on the final stretch. Definitely personally hoping they double in 35 instead.

        1. pingissimus
          • 5 Years
          3 years, 20 days ago

          Not disagreed

Only point was that variation in 31 could lead to a headache in 34/35 if Son isn't an easy swap in. 34 is a perfect fixture and 35 is good too even without the DGW. Spread the funds the wrong way in 31 and then it could be real tricky just a few weeks down the line.

Spurs recent league form hasn't been too shabby apart from the NLD. With WC I'd certainly be budgeting for a swap into Son in 34 - not all the WC ideas I've seen do that.

Definitely - all WC plans I've made assuming Spurs double in 35 have Son/Kane coming in at 34

Need to try and use it to our advantage by rotating heavily. If they’re all 7/10s it doesn’t matter which one plays. Just keep them fresh so we have at least one advantage when we play a big side.

GK is a difficult choice. It is England's weakest position right now. The squad below should have the flexibility to cope with tactical changes (e.g. 2 DMs versus teams like France, Germany, Portugal) and injuries (e.g. if Shaw gets injured then Saka could drop in at LB if really required, Dier at CM if Phillips gets injured, Rashford at LW etc)

      GK: Pickford, Pope, Henderson
      LB: Shaw, Chilwell
      RB: TAA, AWB
      CB: Maguire, Stones, Mings, Dier
      DM: Rice, Phillips
      CM: Henderson, Mount, Maddison, Saka
      LW: Grealish, Sterling
      RW: Sancho, Foden
      FW: Kane, Rashford

        Your squad is alright.

Walker has to make the team for versatility. Dier gets nowhere near the team. Coady and Mings as backup.

Ward Prowse also much needed and great at dead balls - will be Henderson replacement and would even start him if Hendo is out. I don't rate Philips that highly in CM. He wasn't great again today - much too safe with his passing.

DCL is also needed. England need an out and out no. 9 as a plan B and in case Kane gets injured.

Get a new manager first. The team looks good on paper, IMO. But you need a manager who knows how to get the best out of attacking players. Mourinho (and Benitez) are managers from 10-15 years ago and their style of football does not fit with the way the best teams play any more.

      Lloris
      Dier Alderweireld Davies
      Doherty Ndombele Hojbjerg Reguilon
      Bale Kane Son

      Hart

        It's a dodgy defence really

The hole in Spurs is that they just leak way too many goals - that's where they are off City, United and Chelsea (under Tuchel) and Liverpool from last season.

Think Spurs would be a completely different proposition if they were solid at the back.

Yep - he's matched Azpi almost exactly point for point since the Chelsea cs run began.

        This

Some Denmark dude scores against Moldova - now Palace can’t sign him

Shaw assists vs Albania - must get him into my FPL team...

People need to pretend these results never happened, they are utterly, utterly irrelevant. Shaw has been phenomenal regardless of whether or not he assisted vs Albania

The only relevant thing to take from these games are any injuries

Any strong thoughts on Maddison from 31 as opposed Mount from 30? No WC and can easily avoid FT in 30.

Fixtures look remarkably even. Is Maddison merely being avoided because of flag and preference for Iheanacho? Feels like the differential mid in that range.

Mount is better, Chelsea is better.

Are Chelsea better at scoring goals? Not on recent evidence. He's also comfortably ahead of Mount on ppg.

Not arguing that Mount may not be the better player but Maddison feels quite his equal as an FPL asset and has bettered him this season so far. Think had he not got injured he'd be way more popular.

Was set on Mount but definitely swinging the other way now.

Not saying Maddison is bad but he is too inconsistent for my liking. Mount is a mount of consistency

Consistency is a problem for sure but to my mind that simply comes with the territory in that price bracket - it's the reason why they're priced the way they are.

Mount hasn't been any more consistent as a returner this season that I can see. Rather the reverse Maddison returned in 9 of his last 11 outings.

As a Mount owner - Maddison looks by far the better FPL prospect & would swap in a heartbeat if the FT’s were available

Ty Max - nice to have some confirmation.

This may change but looking at fixtures it feels a little odd that Maddison gets so very few name checks.

Hi...been tinkering with a gw31 wildcard and quite like the look of this. Should be affordable given a few price increases.....any views?

    Mendy 3.9
    Taa dias coady rudiger coufal
    Salah Bruno jota neto ESR
    Kane vardy iheanacho

    Thanks

Think I'd have Lingard for Jota - or KdB for Salah

Cheers. I'm avoiding kdb as likely to be rotated. No idea if he will start that Leeds game in gw31 as tightly sandwiched between champs league games

Think jota also going to be in there. Thanks

Curious about exactly how nailed Jota is. There's so little data to go on with him.

He makes me nervous given that when he became a feature early season he also made irritating cameos. I much preferred it when he was at Wolves and he regularly got taken off after 60 🙂

Fair point. I think givencthe fixtures and his previous form he is worth a go

Oh on WC I'd definitely have him

Do think thought that he's another that requires spread of funds to require bench. On your scheme I'd have him 4th mid and not 3rd mid.

I'm pretty sure he will start most games. Surely ahead of firmino in pecking order for the run in.

I have 2 decent subs who can fill in if he misses the odd 1

      Basic observation

Vardy and Iheanacho double up bit risky for me.

With the exception of ESR, you are going to have too many players to choose from for your starting XI so expect some selection headaches.

Bruno is a clear omission that could hurt your rank.
