International Football

How many minutes did FPL assets play over the March international break?

The final international break of 2020/21 reached its conclusion in midweek and it is not just injury and illness that may impact on player availability in Gameweek 30 – it’s game-time, too.

Our Team News tab and our Friday press conference round-up (in both article and video form) will cover everything on the fitness front but it is fatigue we’re focusing more on in this article as we look at how many minutes each FPL asset clocked up while on international duty.

Some nations crammed in a triple-header of games over the last fortnight, with more than a handful of top-flight players taking part in all three of their respective countries’ matches.

As well as on-field exertions, long-haul flights back from further afield may also be a consideration ahead of Easter weekend – although the cancellation of World Cup qualifiers in South America means that this is less of an issue than usual.

MOST MINUTES PLAYED

There were 16 players who lasted 90 minutes in all three of their respective countries’ qualifiers or friendlies, with some big names among that contingent.

Ilkay Gundogan (£6.1m), Ruben Dias (£6.1m), Andrew Robertson (£7.1m) and Tomas Soucek (£5.3m) have significant ownerships in Fantasy Premier League, although all bar Gundogan have been immune to rotation at club-level this season.

Manchester City’s players were made to work the hardest over the last fortnight, with ten of their squad racking up at least 200 minutes of game-time on the continent.

To the best of our knowledge, these were the players – all of whom played at least two-and-a-half matches – who amassed the most minutes over the international break:

FURTHEST TRAVELLED AND LATEST RETURNEES

Many of the matches that took place over the international break, including the friendlies involving the USA, were staged in Europe.

Players such as Sadio Mane (£11.8m), Hakim Ziyech (£7.9m) and Riyad Mahrez (£8.1m) have all been in African Cup of Nations qualifying duty in their home continent, meanwhile, although all those games were wrapped up by Tuesday afternoon at the latest.

Takumi Minamino (£6.0m) was the sole Premier League representative involved for his country in Asia, meanwhile, although he too had rounded his involvement off by Tuesday.

It was the Europe-based World Cup qualifiers, friendlies and under-21 matches on Wednesday that were the last to take place, with England, Germany, France, Scotland and Spain among the nations in action.

The dates for all of the international games in March are available here.

CLUB-BY-CLUB ROUND-UP

The team-by-team guide below breaks down the minutes that each player has played per international match over the last week or so, with a total given at the end.

Any players with an asterisk next to their names withdrew from their countries’ squads either midway through the international break or picked up an injury at the back-end of it.

As mentioned earlier, we’ll have further details on any lingering fitness concerns in our pre-Gameweek 30 team news round-up on Friday.

Difficult one. I like Bamford for this GW only then he has tough fixtures after.

Grealish is back so it should make Watkins a better fpl asset again. Save FT

Ooh I could do that too, but would mean benching Bale which I’m happy to do, would mean benching Grealish too, what do you think mate?

Yeah I’ve held him this long I think I owe it to myself to start him!! Haha, so that will leave the decision to start Digne or Cresswell?? Azpilicueta and Dallas are my other two starters!!

Yeah I think West Ham are more organised defensively too, Everton at home are hard to predict as well, I’ve had Digne for Newcastle, Fulham and Burnley at home and they lost al three and conceded 2 in each game too so I’m trying not to be too sidetracked on the ease of fixture on paper

I got Bale in for a hit last week and he blanked... So I am biased towards 2... but only if its for a free.

Yeah will be for free. Got Bale in for a hit last week so it hurt even more so like yourself.

Not sure why Dallas is on the list. He should definitely start.

Targett with both CS and attacking potential.

3rd spot is difficult. Probably Shaw

Put all 5 defenders on the list as I wanted to check which 3 are the best... I am confused between Cresswell and Target as I am playing Martinez as well... Don’t want double CS gone pain if Villa concede....

Understandable with Martinez and Targett. If that's the case then it rules out Struijk and Dallas double up leaving you with the first 3 on your list

Actually ignore that understandable part. If you think villa keep a CS then why wouldn't you pick Targett? As I said potential for CS and an attacking return

The old Sterling conundrum! Should I seel for Bruno (safe) or Havertz (risky)? Leaning toward Havertz for the fun of it plus I can watch him before going to bed, I live in Australia. Cheers.

Bruno will get you consistent points; Havertz will get you fewer but differential points which will make you happier on those occasions. I find watching matches that I have premium players in too scary but I might be the exception

If you are not leading any races or just short of leader in any race, go for Havertz for some fun and being a differential, he might give you some good returns in rank over the next few games. If leading play safe with Bruno.

I am not leading anything and think I have achieved my highest rank possible with current team, so will be taking some risks to see if I can get more points than the usual template teams.

Most Chelsea D talk is Azpi, Rudiger, Alonzo. Anyone considering Reece James? He’s more locked than Alonzo. More likely to get offense/bonus than other 2. Didn’t play many international minutes.

He’s a good differential... But may not be nailed on for all good matches they have in next few weeks. He will be sure to start GW30. So if you still have WC left and planning on it in GW31, then go ahead and get James.

I dont see Rudi with any attacking points till end of season. Azpi may get an assist. Mendy is more likely to score bonus points in a 0-0 draw... So all 3 may end up with same points from now till end of season.

Thanks Messiah Hazard. I saw an article that said Rudi was good for a few headers? I think I need to remove a City player ahead of 33 so probably doing Cancelo to Azpi or Rudi (head says Rudi, heart says Azpi) so that I can get KDB / Mahrez in for 34 and the end of season goalfest!

Agreed Rudi can score a few headers... But I am not that confident on his attacking returns... Zouma was getting in more into the box on corners. Rudi doesn’t inspire as much. Of course he could prove me wrong soon.

United fan and no to Bruno. But if Son is back can’t see how not . Sheffield kept Chelsea to a 2-0 in the cup with one goal being in the last min so Leeds might not do as good as you think either.

      Do you do haikus?

I'd probably go Gundo before Cancelo - they've both played loads of minutes and think Gundo will play most matches regardless; also think Leicester might sneak a goal.

ESR like Saka looks pretty unlikely to play.

Bruno cap is brave given that Brighton has lowest expected goals in the league?

A bit torn here! If I WC in 31 then Alonso is v tempting but I could equally hold off WC until 33/34.

Actually, wouldn't you start Bale rather than Gundo? I'm not sure if there's anything certain about Bale's minutes, just speculation. If Mou plays him, I'd rather have him against Newcastle than Gundo vs Leicester

Thanks mate. It was more that I can see Bale having a cameo more than Gundo who either will play or not at all imo.

I'll regret saying this but what I've read says that Bruno has been less threatening and Brighton have one of the best defences so yes, would prioritise Chelsea defence. If it helps, I'm planning the something similar myself (although it would be Salah for Bruno for me which is increasingly looking like a bad move) so if Bruno hauls, I'll be commiserating with you.

Need some help here. this is my current team (with 1FT and 2.6ITB):

    Martinez - Forster
    Digne - Shaw - Dallas - Coufal - Reguilon
    Gundogan - Salah - Bruno - Raphinha - Lingard
    Kane - Bamford - DCL

i am thinking of doing a bench boost this week. not sure which of the 3 options should i go for:
    A) Forster -> Mendy
    B) Reguilon -> Alonzo/Azpi
    C) Gundogan -> Mount/Havertz

For me it's A. With Davies out, I think Reguilon will be good for the double (but would also want to get Chelsea defence in somehow) and Gundogan is such great points / price I don't think I'd want to get rid of him. Getting a goalie combination to the end is tricky but Mendy looks good for most GWs (and Marti has some tough matches)
