How Spurs’ FPL assets fared in their final match before Double Gameweek 32

Tottenham Hotspur 1-3 Manchester United

How Spurs' FPL assets fared in their final match before Double Gameweek 32
  • Goals: Son Heung-min | Fred, Edinson Cavani, Mason Greenwood
  • Assists: Lucas Moura | Cavani, Greenwood
  • Bonus: Cavani x3, Greenwood x2, Fred x1

There wasn’t a huge amount to cheer from a Fantasy Premier League perspective in north London on Sunday afternoon.

Blanks for Harry Kane (£11.7m), Bruno Fernandes (£11.6m), Luke Shaw (£5.3m) and Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.7m) meant that four of the five FPL players with double-digit ownerships in the clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium didn’t deliver anything more than appearance points.

Only Son Heung-min (£9.4m) from this quintet emerged from the game with anything meaningful, popping up with his first goal since Gameweek 23.

So where does Sunday’s defeat leave Spurs assets ahead of Double Gameweek 32?

SON SHINES

How Spurs' FPL assets fared in their final match before Double Gameweek 32 5

For many Fantasy bosses, the Kane and Son double-up will be the bare minimum in Double Gameweek 32.

Looking at top 10k ownership figures as a better gauge of popularity among ‘active’ managers, that combination already features in over half of the leading squads (as of Gameweek 31).

With Son the third most-bought player of Gameweek 32 at the time of writing, that percentage will only increase further ahead of Friday’s deadline.

Most of us will be handing the armband to Kane this week and Sunday’s blank in a limp collective showing (not the first one over the last month) won’t have changed our minds either way.

As for Son, any managers sitting on the fence regarding his appeal for the Everton/Southampton double-header may have had their arms twisted after his seven-game goal drought ended.

TREBLE DOUBLE

How Spurs' FPL assets fared in their final match before Double Gameweek 32 6

The burning question remains: what of the Spurs triple-up and who are the leading candidates for inclusion in our squads?

Son and Kane aside, not one of the Lilywhites’ other assets is presently owned by 10% or more managers within the top 10k – so a well-chosen differential has the capacity to aid in the ongoing push for a green arrow, although may only add to the headaches in Gameweek 33 for those navigating that blank without a chip.

Ben Davies’ (£4.5m) ongoing injury woes will aid Sergio Reguilon‘s (£5.5m) chances of starting both Gameweek 32 fixtures but it was far from a convincing audition for Spurs’ defensive assets at the weekend, with another three goals flying past Hugo Lloris (£5.6m).

Jose Mourinho’s side have allowed nine big chances and 26 shots in the box to be conceded across their last two matches, totals worse than all other Premier League clubs bar Crystal Palace.

The unsettled nature of the backline has no doubt not helped, with Davinson Sanchez (£5.2m) underpinning previous good form with a horror show against Newcastle, a rusty Eric Dier (£4.6m) brought in from the cold this weekend and Toby Alderweireld (£5.4m) seemingly the latest player to join the long list of names in his manager’s bad books.

Rookie Joe Rodon (£5.0m), indeed, has suddenly become the mainstay at the back after three successive Premier League starts.

Further forward, Lucas Moura (£6.6m) merits a mention.

A veritable teacher’s pet among the throng of bodies on Mourinho’s naughty step, Lucas has started nine of Spurs’ last ten league games and appeared in the other match as a substitute.

He has six attacking returns in that time (a respectable goal involvement of 35%), with his latest contribution being the assist for Son’s strike on Sunday.

The goals don’t look likely to flow, it must be said, as he has mustered only eight shots in those ten appearances – just two more than bit-part full-back Serge Aurier (£5.2m).

A total of 10 key passes from Gameweek 23 onwards matches what Kane has produced but still falls eight short of Son’s total.

BALEING OUT

How Spurs' FPL assets fared in their final match before Double Gameweek 32 2

There’s one key name we haven’t yet mentioned in this piece: Gareth Bale (£9.2m), who was benched for the third straight Premier League match.

His total pitch-time over the last three Gameweeks comes to ten minutes and despite the fact that his team have a double-header coming up, he has already been moved on by a further 50,000+ Fantasy managers ahead of Friday’s deadline – that takes his total number of sales over the last three Gameweeks to somewhere in the region of 800,000.

What we should mention at this point is Spurs’ involvement in the EFL Cup final, a game which falls four days after the clash with Southampton.

The Lilywhites are just about still in the hunt for a top-four spot but Mourinho will surely covet face-saving silverware and there is the possibility that, while players such as Lucas could have minutes managed ahead of that cup final with Manchester City, the likes of Bale and Erik Lamela (£5.7m) could feature against the porous Saints.

RED ALERT

How Spurs' FPL assets fared in their final match before Double Gameweek 32 3

Back to Sunday’s action and switching attention to United, Edinson Cavani (£7.8m) and Mason Greenwood (£7.0m) both registered two attacking returns apiece.

Greenwood has quietly racked up 10 shots in the box over his last six appearances, a total beaten by just four other FPL midfielders and seven more than Fernandes has managed – although the fact that the youngster was only a 72nd-minute substitute in this clash underscores the rotation risk.

Cavani’s chances of a prolonged run in the team have been boosted by a potentially season-ending injury to Anthony Martial (£8.0m), meanwhile.

Now nine points clear of fifth place and surely out of their cross-city rivals’ reach, there is little left to play for on the domestic front for the Red Devils.

Continued involvement in the Europa League is therefore something to consider when assessing rotation risk, with continental ties falling either side of Premier League matches in Gameweeks 32-35.

SLAB ON WIRE

Those who pay attention to our Suspension Tightrope widget on our homepage will have noticed that only one Premier League player sits precariously positioned on nine yellow cards: Harry Maguire (£5.5m).

Another caution for the England international against Burnley on Saturday will mean that he misses both Gameweeks 33 and 34, as collecting 10 bookings results in a two-match ban.

With Leeds and Liverpool providing the opposition in those two games and Maguire out of danger if he manages to avoid a booking against the Clarets, it’ll be interesting to see if Ole Gunnar Solksjaer is tempted to tactically rest a defender who has been ever-present both this season and last.

Tottenham Hotspur XI (4-2-3-1): Lloris, Aurier, Rodon, Dier, Reguilon, Højbjerg, Ndombele (Lamela 78), Lo Celso (Sissoko 61), Lucas (Bale 82), Kane, Son.

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): Henderson, Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Lindelof, Shaw, Fred, McTominay, Rashford (Greenwood 72), Pogba, Fernandes (Matic 90), Cavani.

Here's a talking point... Chelsea and City players.

Why are people still so afraid to take risks on Chelsea and City assets? Squads on WC are packed with good bench options which should embolden folks to take some calculated risks. Chelsea and City assets have high potential and are strong differentials.

I'm talking about the likes of KdB, Gundo, Mahrez, Torres, Havertz, Pulisic and the defenders like Alonso, Rudiger, Cancelo, Dias.

The fear of not being nailed on should be greatly reduced for these assets if you have good bench cover and I've tailored my approach to try and take some calculated risks.

I knew there was a chance that my City players wouldn't play, but I also knew that Pep rarely brings on certain players for cameos (KdB, Dias etc.) So I built my Wildcard team with these things in mind.

Dias and KdB didn't play which was bad, but I knew it was possible, so my bench options of Son and Holding duly stepped up for 15 points and I still have Shaw last on the bench who is a relatively strong bench option.

I don't see why you should play scared to close out the season especially if chasing. Take a punt on Torres, Havertz or Pulisic as long as your whole midfield doesn't consist of those kind of players, well constructed squad depth should cover you. It's high time us fantasy managers became Peps ourselves and did some squad rotation!

The problem is while they're still in champs league that is going to be the priority for both managers. I'm fed up trying to second guess rotation and would rather have players who are nailed.

IMO this style of play (great post, Camzy!) shouldn't involve much "second guessing rotation". You just start your best players with best fixtures every week and let them get auto-subbed if they no-show. Also, you captain the player you think will score the most points, even if not nailed, and choose a safe VC.

Maybe I'm not describing orthodox Lateriser upside chasing, but I do agree that we should actively play Pep roulette and know our bench is there as protection.

That said, Pep did not really try to win the Leeds game (left KDB on the bench and brought Foden on later than would have been ideal), so I am going to reduce my City holdings for now. Gundo has to go for me. KDB I'll keep at least one more week.

I can see why people are reluctant with Chelsea attackers - less about rotation than their lack of consistency for much of the season.

Agree with City, though. Defensively, I had doubled but with upcoming blank and cheaper assets with great fixtures, I’m only interested in City attack. I might well get back on KDB after the blank. As you say, if you have a decent bench option or two, go for it!

City attack absolutely on my radar from 34 on - and I don't expect to lose Stones before end of season.

Suspect I'll be getting one mid in 34 - absolutely prime fixture, Just not sure which one yet. Given solid bench I'm not concerned by benchings and it's just captaincy that feels like a no no. Bruno to KDB is very tempting but Mahrez or eighth attacker Foden are also on the radar

Chelsea are valid too but fixtures are much less tasty.

      You should probably include Sterling.
Blank GW33 slowed down a few as they probably have Kane minimum.
Plenty have a Chelsea defender and given the template attack did reasonably well, a Chelsea attacker seemed a step too far.

You're making a big assumption that if they don't start they stay benched. Most people don't want to take that kind of risk, understandably.

Yes and just because typically some players haven't been subbed in, in the past doesn't mean they won't be at times from here on out. With all the comps these teams are involved in, it wouldn't be a surprise at all if those players sub in at times.

“Fear” is the keyword. Most people seem to play FPL in a constant state of terror, if the desperate pleas for help which populate these pages day and night are anything to go by =)

Good post. Obviously boils down to whether your overall point output is going to be as high with having a stronger bench to make up for the 'higher risk' players - theory goes that means you compromise elsewhere in your starting 11 as a result.

I've gone from KDB, Gundogan and Dias a few weeks back (no WC) and will be losing Gundogan for Son this week. Will likely get Stones or Dias in but I think that's it. At this stage I prefer all of Kane, Lacazette (and then Iheanacho), Salah, Fernandes, Son, Jota and Lingard versus a rotation risk in City.

It will certainly stir things up if City crash out of the CL 😉

Not that I doubt anyone cares but what I meant to say is I have already lose KDB and Dias and will be losing Gundo this week 😉

No fear involved at all. I'm guessing other players will score more points for my team and all my players are starters and least likely to start on the bench to cameo. With all the games these teams have to play in, not surprising at all if they cameo. At this time of year it's a different situation than earlier on so the past weeks isn't really a sound basis for determining what will come in these last weeks.
I would ask what is the fear about going without.

Interesting to see how it pans out with how you are playing these final weeks. All the power to you.

I 100% agree with you Camzy. However this should have been the approach all season. I have stuck with a full 15 man playing squad all season and whilst there have been times where points were left on the bench there have been many more times that my bench has come to the rescue......this week is a perfect point........team linked

Clearly we need to make any transfers before knowing FA cup results but is Sterling to Maddison move you would make? Leaves 4.8 in bank ( so could get Bruno) but Maddison v WBA very tempting- team would be

      Leno
      TAA Rüdiger Alonso
      Salah Son Jota Lingard Maddison*
      Kane Iheanacho

      Forster Fofana Holding Vydra

      Benefit of hindsight incoming 😉

It should have been quite obvious to back off City assets (I did, but not enough) seeing as they were competing on 4 fronts. Even the most expensive squad has to see some impact in dynamic & quality if you are to spread your assets so wide.

I wish City the best in all competitions. If anyone can do it, Pep is up there.

As an FPL Mgr, I should have been wiser. The blank in 33 for City was a distraction. I should have moved more decisively for the more talisman-like players. I blinkered myself 🙂

Got lots of value tied up into Bruno and none into Salah so I'm thinking about Salah > Son this week & then get Salah back on WC in 33/34. Is this crazy logic?

Yes, obviously. But it's not like we're talking about picking between Salah and Jordan Ayew here

Salah is in form, could be better form granted, but Bruno's level has dropped. Looks tired which is understandable. I hope Bruno hits firm myself, just saying he's dipped and has Cup and Europa too.

Yeah, that's true as well - and I feel like Liverpool have more to play + there's the golden boot challenge for Salah. Just heavily worried about Bruno instantly punishing me as he's usually so consistent

This week's CL and Europa ties will be interesting in any case!

      Bruno+Gundog >> Son+Maddy/Greenwood/Mount (-4)? Will be using bench boost.

      Mendy
      TAA. Rudiger. Holding
      Salah. Bruno. Lingard. Jota. Gundog
      Kane. Iheanacho
      (Forster, DCL, Coady, Shaw)

Hmmm if you think Gundogan won't start then yes, I fancy Mount personally.

I'm doing Sterling to Son and have Neto to monitor who may have to become Mount, Bowen also very tempting? I'm bench boosting too.

        Lloris
        TAA Castagne Rudiger Coufal
        Bruno Son Jota Lingard
        Kane Kelechi
        Leno DCL Neto Shaw

Looks great. Neto to Mount could be nice. Would you swop Salah or Bruno for Son in my position? More money tied up in Bruno

Hmmmm I went Sterling Bruno over Salah Son on my WC and it didn't go well so I'm really torn, IMO Liverpool look poor, United look good so if I was selling one it would be Salah but you know how that will end. Spurs don't exactly look great either so I'd probably hold both but not having Son for his double could hurt, it's so so tough!

looking for a 3rd Spurs for double (Kane/Son already on board) thinking Lloris as he has the Sheffield fixture after the blank (have cover) plus he's nailed/poss save points - no point overthinking this one right? still have FH & WC to fix things if it goes wrong anyway

Does feel incredibly boring this move but don't see any standout punts for a 3rd player, got a mustard midfield already so only other opition is defence... Regulon? i'll be binning McCarthy in goal anyway to justify the move even more.

Yeah nothing else to worry about tbh, gives a bit of extra excitment to watch the games with a keeper incase of pens etc, ill go along with that and switch off till the gameweek starts

Yes I think your right, if I was chasing I'd try my luck with a punt like Moura/Regulion but happy to just tick along - dont have particularly high expectations with Lloris but nothing else stands out.

I have Kane, Son and Lloris plus Mendy (GK).

I wanted three but didn't care for chancing on which defender would play and didn't want a mid over the mids I had and wanted so got Lloris 3-4 weeks ago.

Is taa in for a -4 worth it?

      A) Play Lowton (man utd)
      B) Play Struijk (liverpool)
      C) Play Veltman (Chelsea)
      D) Hit for TAA

Burnley and Brighton both don't have great fixtures in the run in. Am tempted to shift one for TAA.

      Ladies & gentlemen - Jose Mourinho 😆

“Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho is planning a possible reunion with former Belgium midfielder Marouane Fellaini by bringing him to Spurs. The 33-year-old, who worked under Mourinho at Manchester United, has been with Chinese club Shandong Luneng since leaving Old Trafford in 2019”

You have to wonder where his head is at. Loves bit-part, end of career actors. If Kane is off next season then I don't know which way Spurs are headed. Spurs should have stuck with the Pochettino build

They'll be where Arsenal are at now if that happens

The big 6 has always been a fairly flexible concept - it used to be a big 4 after all - but the power lines are being redrawn. The division is much more of a top 10 and bottom 10 affair and not the 14 6 thing it used to be.

That's not necessarily a given, but I grant you change creates volatility. It may happen today, but maybe not tomorrow. You build for future stability & gain.

Next week- Son and Stones to Jota and Trent -4
After blank will get Son back for Bruno most probably
