Spurs sack Mourinho as De Bruyne is ruled out of City’s Gameweek 32 match

Tottenham Hotspur have announced that they have parted company with head coach Jose Mourinho.

Rumours about the Spurs manager’s departure started to swirl on Monday morning, with the club confirming his exit soon after.

Coaches Joao Sacramento, Nuno Santos, Carlos Lalin and Giovanni Cerra have also been relieved of their duties.

A statement from chairman Daniel Levy said:

Jose and his coaching staff have been with us through some of our most challenging times as a Club. Jose is a true professional who showed enormous resilience during the pandemic. On a personal level, I have enjoyed working with him and regret that things have not worked out as we both had envisaged. He will always be welcome here and we should like to thank him and his coaching staff for their contribution.

Ryan Mason will take first-team training in Mourinho’s stead today, with widespread media reports suggesting that the 29-year-old former Spurs midfielder and fellow youth team coach Chris Powell will be in temporary charge of the Lilywhites from now until the end of the season.

It’ll be interesting to see if those appointments help or hinder the first-team prospects of Gareth Bale (£9.2m) – who Mason has spoken fondly of in the past – and Dele Alli (£7.4m), following their fall from favour under their now-former head coach.

Spurs are in Double Gameweek 32 action against Southampton on Wednesday evening and Mourinho had been scheduled to face the media tomorrow ahead of that game.

The north London side then blank in Gameweek 33 because of their involvement in the EFL Cup final.

An update on the condition of Harry Kane (£11.8m) is awaited after the striker limped out of the 2-2 draw with Everton last Friday.

Spurs face Manchester City in this weekend’s final and the Citizens could well be without Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) for that clash.

City posted a medical bulletin on Monday morning, confirming that the Belgian suffered an injury to his right foot and ankle in Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final defeat against Chelsea.

The full extent of the problem is not yet known but De Bruyne will definitely miss the midweek clash with Aston Villa.

SPURS UNDER MOURINHO – OPTA FACTS

  • During his time with the club, Jose Mourinho won just 51% of his games in charge in all competitions (44/86). Only with Leiria (45%) has he posted a lower win ratio with a single club during his managerial career.
  • Spurs have lost 13 games in all competitions this season, the highest number of defeats Mourinho has suffered in a single campaign in all competitions during his managerial career.
  • Only Man City (130), Liverpool (117) and Man Utd (116) picked up more Premier League points than the Lilywhites (95) during Mourinho’s tenure.
  • Only Brighton (31) and Southampton (30) shipped more points from winning positions in the Premier League than Mourinho’s Spurs (27). Twenty of those lost points have come in 2020/21.

I like A - Greenwood might just be a good bet for the remainder of the season.

However, with KDB out, Gundo might have more advanced positions again - so worth keeping in mind.

Anyone else loving all the meltdowns over this super league! The "top 6" have long stopped caring about what fans thought and this has been on the cards for years so shouldn't be any surprise. Then you have sky trying to claim they are speaking for the fans....the same sky who just a few months ago had West Brom on PPV! The irony of all this is hilarious

Ye sky are hugely money grabbing too of course.

It all depends whether the clubs are allowed to remain in their domestic leagues plus how promotion: relegation will work in the super league.

I’m Not convinced the super league will work as a product anyway. Arsenal are abysmal and not worth watching. Athletico Madrid are like watching paint dry. United and spurs play to draw 0-0 every time they play a good side. No relegation so
No incentive to put out a decent team once halfway through the season and you can’t win. Hardly likely to be a decent spectacle is it.

I've lost interest in the champions league which isn't too far off what this super league will be...same teams play each other every year in champs league. You could name the last 8 before its even started and get 6 or 7 of them depending on the draw. It's getting boring and lost the excitement when it first started. I've said for years that they should just get on with it and have a European super league but they'd need to have some sort of promotion/relegation between the domestic leagues to keep it interesting...even then I don't think I'd watch it. Give me Scottish lower league game any day

Ye completely agree they need to improve the champions league as it’s stale. As you say they really should reduce the numbers but they won’t due to wanting the revenue.

A competition with just the top 2 from each major league would be more exciting (or even league winner and league cup winner in each major league). Will never happen due to £££ though

It's not the faults of those "8" teams. Is it criminal to be a strong team? They can often go into the quarter-final because they are strong enough. You prefer a random final 8 every season? It doesn't make sense.

Never blamed any of these teams, main fault is with UEFA fair play regs which are a shambles and just means that the amount of money the top sides spend is obscene and keeps growing. These clubs are only "strong enough" due to the money they're spending and now they want more places in champs league and guaranteed spots....closed shop so the rich clubs just get richer and no one else can compete with them

I have no idea how the no relegation is meant to work ... saw a comment re a fixed 15 clubs who never get relegated and 5 that will ... so teams finishing 11th to 15th could be relegated whilst 5 teams below them aren't?

Imagine if a club like Newcastle were protected from relegation from the PL - I think Ashley would be happy to spend pennies on the club and see them lose 10-0 every week

Time to ditch Bruno for Maddison / Greenwood? Or wrong week for that? Could just grab a BRI defender?

The proposed scheduling of the Super League in August is perhaps the most barking part of the project.

This will fall immediately after the Euros or the World Cup every other year. It's almost necessary for super 6 players to be banned for internationals for this to work. People expecting a great standard of football are simply deluded or are they prepared to forego watching their national teams put out full squads?

it will just be like a pre-season mickey mouse cup, but played in the mid season (with higher price money of course)

And in a typical World Cup year you try to avoid selecting players who have featured in the World Cup in your early FPL selections for a good reason.

But I don't really get your point that starting it in August is some sort of new madness – football season always starts in August

There will also be domestic fixtures then too of course, It will be like the standard Christmas schedule but in August. There will be the whole season ahead of them - if they choose to stay in it. In a typical year this is when schedules are lightest - for a reason.

Players will be dropping like flies. No particular coincidence that they're going down like nine pins now. Too much football equals knackered footballers.

If you have soup for tea everyday then you’re going to get sick of it. Same thing goes here, if we are force fed the same match ups over and over again (with nothing to play for mind you), it’s going to get boring within a few months tops.

These clowns will come crawling back to UEFA with their tails between their legs in no time. This super league sh*tshow is definitely not a sustainable idea

This is essentially a rival to the Champions League, not to domestic leagues.

The clubs would treat the EPL like they treat the EFL and FA Cup, reserve teams etc. The EPL would be meaningless because there are no consequences of poor performance (i.e. no qualifying for Champions league etc).

Plus, those clubs would gain £300m+ extra in revenue than the rest of the league so the financial disparity would be enormous and the likelihood of other teams competing at the top end (i.e. as Leicester and West Ham are doing) would be reduced.

The way that at times the likes of Leicester, West Ham, Everton, Villa, Wolves, Leeds etc have been able to close the gap to, and even exceed the Big 6 in recent years obviously had their noses out of joint

No one else deserves to do well if it’s to their detriment

It will kill all the domestic leagues, beacuse it removes all the stakes and motivation of doing well in the league. Whats the point if it doesnt qualify you for anything?

If Arsenal finished in midtable, they could care less as they can still get paid by getting battered by Madrid in midweek. Whats the point of watching football at that point?

Things can change, especially the existing ones are not the perfect ones.

Course they will. Fans will still treasure the domestic league, as they always have.

Champs League doesn't kill the PL or any other domestic league. In fact, it makes them as enticing as it does because you have to qualify to make it in. With the ESL, these teams can finish any where from first to sixteenth in their domestic league and they are still in the ESL(They're still in the ESL even if they finish in relegation land, but then they'd lose out on top flight money and they'll make sure that doesn't happen). Suddenly, domestic leagues become nothing more than the FA Cup or the Energy Drink Cup to them. Great place to give some playing time to bench players, and if we happen to win it, well, that's great, but no skin off their noses if they don't finish Top 4 any more

How difficult is it to understand that a competition that is decided by wealth alone is to the detriment of sport?

Try googling when AC Milan last won a trophy
        Do the same for Spurs
        Do the same for Sevilla
        Do the same for Leicester

What is quite likely is that UEFA will run Champions League against this and it's quite possible that the Premier League will be also schedule against it. There will be an almighty war to see what brand is the strongest. It's definitely not written in stone that Super League will win.

This is a war started by certain clubs against UEFA and their national associations simply to get more money. They want to have their cake and eat it. But by doing that they are starting a war that could bring down leagues with civil wars excluding clubs. They don't care.

You not excited for the ESL Draft? In all seriousness though, they must've taken the backlash into account, knowing that localised fans of the teams will probably revolt against this and support local leagues and that they could use the global footprint to drive it forward. I'm predicting Liverpool being based in Shanghai, Man Utd based in Dubai etc.

The six teams should be banned from the Premier League now, the table recalculated without the results from those six teams, and the remaining 14 teams compete for the title this year. If the six teams want to re-consider, they can start in League Two and work their way back up the pyramid like the Rangers did in the Scottis pyramid.
