The Scout Network: Should we invest in Manchester City’s players?

On the back of their League Cup victory on Sunday, Manchester City dive straight into a Champions League fixture against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday evening.

After this, they will be in Premier League action against Crystal Palace before the reverse fixture of their two-legged clash with PSG.

This leaves FPL managers with a headache in terms of selecting Manchester City players in their squads.

With what on paper appears to be an easy Premier League fixture sandwiched by the two all-important Champions League matches, could we see Pep rotation at its very best (or worst) this week?

We asked the Scout Network for their views on Manchester City, whether we should look to invest in the champions-elect and which of their assets is surest of starts.

Double Gameweek 26 Scout Picks built on Man City and Everton assets 3

No City players for me at the moment, and in all honesty, I’m comfortable with this decision.

I feel like to tap into any potential haul, you need at least two City players to maximise the chance of getting at least one starter. With the Gameweeks running out, the Citizens still involved in multiple competitions and rotation perhaps likely to affect performances on the pitch, there are too many good options playing for other teams.

Ruben Dias (£6.1m) seems the most sensible hold for me if you have him, as he continues to play almost every game. However, Ilkay Gundogan (£5.8m) has only started three of the last seven matches and João Cancelo (£5.9) has only started four of the last seven. I’d probably be looking to jump ship after the Palace game.

Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m) is having a relatively poor season by his own stratospheric FPL standards and I don’t feel he is justifying his price tag even without the threat of missing games. As always, he has huge potential if you feel he will see decent minutes. You may find that switch is also made easier due to the poor form of Bruno Fernandes (£11.6m).

The likes of Phil Foden (£6.0m) and Ryiad Mahrez (£8.0m) are explosive players, but you would need to decide if you were happy with around a 50% chance of them seeing minutes in a game. It’s just not worth the risk, for me.

FPL Blackbox – Az

FPL Nymfria

I am currently City-less after selling John Stones (£5.1m) in the previous Gameweek due to his suspension. To be honest, with the relative shortage of City clean sheets, I wasn’t convinced on switching like for like.

Given the mass rotation at the Etihad at the moment, it is hard to feel confident investing in many. With other players from teams offering assured game-time and value, there’s an argument to finish the season without any of Guardiola’s troops. I’m still a fan of Ilkay Gundogan (£5.8m) and he remains important to Pep’s game plan, so hopefully, that means less rotation with games depleting.

FPL Nymfria

El Statto

I’m currently without any City assets after saying goodbye to Joao Cancelo (£5.9m) for Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.6m) this week. With City just two wins away from winning the title, I feel their focus will be the Champions League games against PSG in the short term.

With the Crystal Palace match sandwiched between those fixtures, you have to think that the team will be heavily rotated in a game you would still expect them to win. John Stones’ (£5.1m) suspension could still see rotation in the centre-back positions with Nathan Ake (£5.4m) and Aymeric Laporte (£6.0m) tussling with Ruben Dias (£6.1m) for the two available positions.

Ederson (£6.1m) is the only safe option if you are wanting a City asset but their clean sheets have dried up recently, too, probably due to the rotation at the back. Anyone else must be picked with caution and with the expectation they could easily not play or could get 20 minutes from the bench.

El Statto

Fantasy Chat – Kareem

As we enter the crunch time of the season, I expect Pep Guardiola to continue being a rotation nightmare for us FPL managers for the short term at least.

At the moment, I hold no Man City assets and I am not looking to add any before Gameweek 36. The Citizens do have a plum fixture in Gameweek 34 against Crystal Palace but I expect their ever-tinkering head coach to heavily rotate his squad to give his key players a breather after the League Cup final, in between the two rounds of the Champions League semi-final and before the clash with Chelsea in Gameweek 35.

Ruben Dias (£6.1m) is probably the only safe pick at the moment, especially with John Stones (£5.9m) suspended. For attacking players, I’d like to see how things progress with City in the Champions League first before I invest in them. I am quite sure they will return to our radars again before the season ends.

Mahrez and Jesus emerging as Man City's key form assets

Having just played my Wildcard, I have used the opportunity to get rid of all my Manchester City players as a result of Blank Gameweek 33 .

For Gameweek 34, I will be looking get back at least one City asset as they play Palace. My top target is Riyad Mahrez (£8.0m). Firstly, the Algerian is one player who does not often come on as a substitute. This is crucial as he either starts or does not play at all; if the latter happens, your bench can step up. Secondly, his statistics are good when he starts: he has nine goals, six assists and five double-digit hauls.

The current world number one answers your questions

City’s fixtures between now and the end of the season look incredibly appealing. If you can tap into the right players, it looks like you could score an abundance of points.

However, with the Champions League ties against PSG on the horizon and the Premier League title virtually secure, there will no doubt be plenty of rotation and guessing Pep’s team selection becomes even more difficult than usual. Spending top dollar on a player who might not play is a risk that doesn’t interest us.

There could be value in someone like Phil Foden (£6.0m), although with players like Jesse Lingard (£6.6m) and James Maddison (£7.3m) offering more certainty of starting at similar price points, it looks as though we’ll be braving it without any City options.

FPL Experiment Podcast

Bendito Fantasy – Leo

City forwards are risky picks because of the aforementioned Pep Roulette and it’s worth noting that often, Man City’s starting XI doesn’t include any orthodox striker. Therefore, I think two players is enough; preferably a midfielder/defender combo.

One Man City player to keep a close eye on is Phil Foden (£6.0m), with only 7.3% of ownership. The youngster is having the best FPL season of his career (seven goals and eight assists) and has registered 118 points, despite having started only 14 matches.

Man City’s key player is, of course, Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m). Having fully recovered to start the Carabao Cup final, De Bruyne could be a great differential until the end of the season. The Belgian is always a reliable pick when fit and he’s a straight swap from highly-owned asset Bruno Fernandes (£11.6m). The differences in ownership between these two players (56.8% for Fernandes v 14.4% for De Bruyne) is massive, so this differential could help secure your mini-leagues over the next five Gameweeks.

    So, is this ethical

Safely into the cash H2H quarters starting in 36

    Still have BB and TC

Should I make a huge amount of transfers in 35 ( essentially a wildcard-28) to give me a cracking 36 team, BB 37 and TC 38

Basically giving myself another wildcard and sacrifice the rank to win the H2H?

People are quick to jump the mark by saying 'No' but who has more points in FPL at the end of the day? (Albeit having played 5 games more.)

I much prefer Raphinha as when fit, on corners, plays a bit closer to goal, has the stats and typically played 90 mins. Harrison doesn't have all of that and often subbed a bit early... but despite that, still scoring well.

If you get him you have to hold & wait for returns. Just not much left of the season to go unfortunately.

    Martinez Leno
    Coady Rudiger Coufal Dunk Phillips
    Salah Jota Son Bruno Lingard
    Kane Iheanacho Vydra

Dunk & Jota to TAA & Eze, then Eze to Raphinha after the double if fit? Not sure if TAA would take too much money away from rest of the team.

      My summary below (repasted)...

      Most of the time when I get “greedy” with my transfers they backfire. This GW my final 3 choices were;

      1. Burn the FT & play Rudiger (boring!),
      2. Gundog >> Pereira (fairly boring)
      3. Kane >> Vardy! (exciting!)

      Of course I did 3.

Both of the other two would have outscored my “greedy” option. Also the knock on effect is I now would like Kane back who is more expensive so I need to use 2FTs to get him. I knew these points before making my move Friday but the greed inside me couldn’t resist and the other two more “boring” options didn’t feed my appetite.

Anyone else see this possible downside in their game? I often find doing simple boring moves more likely to pay off for me.

I’m very much an advocate of ‘it’s what you did do, not what you didn’t’, but I’ll make an exception for myself this time since I’ve got the screenshots to go with!

Was comparing the RMT projections, taking into account the upcoming Everton double, so took DCL and Coady. The other options? Wood and Castagne, who I didn’t go for because I didn’t want to book in a transfer, and I’d end up with a benching headache involving Cast, TAA, Shaw, and Michael Keane.

Worse still, my wildcard took out Rich, Digne, Azpi, meaning I would have scored 4 more points, even with triple spurs, Tierney, and Raphinia, over what I went to. Very much a ‘what could have been’ week.

Oh, and the short part is that I’ve now adopted a dog called Carlo, but following Ancelotti forgetting to mention Michael Keanes hamstrings for my wildcard prior to a clean sheet, I’d say I’m a tad fumin

52 points and slowly recovering from a nightmare run of ten straight reds after Xmas. Now back up to 984k. Still going to be my worst season ever.

Rough: Keane didn't play who I brought in for Stones with an eye on my bench boost in GW35. 6 points down in the first game not a good start!

Smooth: Salah(c), my other new recruit Nacho who came in for Antonio. Double Leeds clean sheet.

After a season of too many hits and a sluggish climb up the ranks, I kept faith in my squad, mad no transfers, and finished with 78 points to move up about 150K places. I’m now within 50 points of finishing in the top 100K and passing my wife in our friends mini-league.

Had Salah as captain, Iheanacho and Wood up front, double Chelsea defense and even got points from going “Alioski deep” with my last bench spot during this blank game week.

Where did it go so wrong!
      GW20 - top 40k
Up to GW27 averaging +65pts per GW
Last 7 weeks have had 4 captains hauls of 2 or less!
      Two scores of 26 & 33.
      And am now +311k!

      This week's highlights:
Transfers of Trossard & Trent (including giving TAA the armband).
      Coady & double Villa defence.
      Jota, Bruno, Maddison & DCL.

Saving grace; Rudiger CS & Nacho saving my blushes.

      End it now.

      My fault but:
Kane to Laca early to avoid rises. Laca Injury. Laca to Cavani. Plays a few minutes. Son to Jota plays a few minutes. -8 gained 2 points and lost 6 + a transfer. glad when the season is over.

Another generally smooth week - 16 green arrows in the last 20 weeks. Mainly setting my team up for GW 34 and 36 as I will FH in 35.

Defence doing the business with Dallas, Shaw and Rudiger all returning for a total of 64 (no hits) and a rank rise of 2316 to 1530.

That makes it a rise from rank 1,065,385 in GW 13 to 1530 now and chasing a few decent cash mini league wins (just need to gain 20-40 points on the leaders in a few but the FH may do much of that).

Rough = doing something to my team.

I had 11 playing players going in to BGW33.
      Did Son + Kane -> Salah + Vardy (-4)
      Benched Wood!! (and Holding)

I work out a point swing of minus 15 points.
And I lost my FFS cup game by 1 point.

Who says taking a hit on a blank gwk only costs 2 points?!

Mostly smooth for me. A good score of 67 sees me catch up in my ML.

Smooths: Captain Salah, returns from Iheanacho, transfer was Kilman to Castagne which paid off immediately and means I can save a transfer this week to see what the happy hap is with any doubles and plan accordingly. Also had big Kienan Davis come is for Alonso to get a useful 5 points.

Rough: Not too many, but almost captained Iheancho but didn't and the ML leader did so made up a lot of points in the last 10 minutes of the gameweek. Like most people, could have had a tonne more from Salah and Jota and also lost Trent's clean sheet late on. Castagne losing his clean sheet from 1 of 2 shots on target is peak Palace but not complaining with 9 points

Rough: Did Lloris and Kane to Martinez and Vardy for a hit for net zero. Benched Rudiger and played Veltman and Coady. TAA also blanked and had Jota's 1 point Bruno and Lingard blank. So 8 players got me 14 points.
Smooth: The legend that is Chris Wood, Iheanacho captain and Salah for 53 points. So 67-4 and a rise of 10k places

Rough: There are only 3 players in the top 10K template I don't own. Two of them were Salah (9) and Rudiger (8).

Smooth: I had Lowton instead of the third player (Coady), plus Iheanacho captain = small green arrow.

      61 points.

    Most of the time when I get “greedy” with my transfers they backfire. This GW my final 3 choices were;

    1. Burn the FT & play Rudiger (boring!), 2. Gundog >> Pereira (fairly boring)
    3. Kane >> Vardy! (exciting!)

    Of course I did 3.

Both of the other two would have outscored my “greedy” option. Also the knock on effect is I now would Kane back who is more expensive so I need to use 2FTs to get him. I know these points before making my move Friday but the greed inside me couldn’t resist and the other two more “boring” options didn’t feed my appetite.

Anyone else see this possible downside in their game? I often find doing simple boring moves more likely to pay off for me.

I too have found this season whenever I’ve gone for the ‘aggressive’ one week attacking transfer (like your Kane -> Vardy) it’s got me less points than doing nothing and it’s burnt a transfer - so actually quite a big overall loss.

I’ve tried it 4 or 5 times this season and same (bad) outcome every time

Risk vs reward for me. The times where i have been 'greedy' or 'risky' have paid off less often, but have paid off more highly. My dice roll was to choose Martinelli over Pereira as he was looking like he might play up top. Unfortunately, he only came off the bench for 1 point!

      1. RAFA THE GAFFA

Yeah, I think I will return to my boring ways. Or at least check some of my more “exciting” moves with a knock on effect filter

The knock on effect is definitely worth considering. Also, chasing a certain player because of a fixtures has burned me a few times. I've convinced myself they are essential, burned my transfers, made it expensive to come back from and they've only gone and blanked! Playing with the head over the heart may be less exciting, but likely gives you a better rank at the end of the season.

Morning mate, I wouldn't let it beat you up. The whole point of Fantasy Football is doing what YOU believe is the right thing to do. Gamblers only ever speak about their big wins and golfers only talk about their best shots/score. The human fact of the matter is that over a long period we make decisions based on our nature, some of us like risk of varying degrees with varying success. However its only a game, no one gets hurt and we get to reset each and every week.

      Very similar here.

I chose Alonso & Sterling on my 31WC instead of TAA & Son whilst booking in a -4 to get them back in 32.

Knew it was a risk but could see the greedy monster hauls (which failed!)

I did the same. Brought in Vardy and Greenwood, and now need a -4 to get Kane. To be fair, Vardy could have easily had a double digit haul, he had the chances.

Kane's EO is going to be massive this week, so it's a rank killer if he returns. For now I'm going to wait for the press conferences. If Kane is carrying an injury then Sheffield United is the one game Spurs could bench him and still win!

Not sure what to do this week, and will likely depend on pressers but with (1FT 1.0ITB):

    Mendy Forster
    Rudiger Dias Fofana TAA Shaw
    Salah Bruno Lingard Jota Martinelli
    Nacho Vydra Kane

How essential is Son? as would likely require a hit for him. Otherwise could upgrade elsewhere or just roll FT?

    Advice please 🙂

Interesting one, I was mid table obscurity pretty much all season, however, over last few weeks have risen to the top 2/3 in all my ML's (pretty good standard too with one ML leader being 76th overall), weirdly by not paying much attention and just doing the "obvious" transfers (nacho/lingard).

I've wanted to play my WC for a while now, but team still looks ok for this week (see below). Any changes to make for the 1 FT? and when is a good time to WC?

    Martinez (Sanchez)
TAA / Digne / Azpi (Dallas / Lowton)
Salah / Mount / Son / Lingard (Raphinha)
    Kane / Nacho / Bamford

Only Harry Kane, Mohamed Salah, Jamie Vardy, Heung-Min Son, Alexandre Lacazette and Chris Wood have scored 10+ Premier League goals in each of the last four seasons.
Good argument for getting Chris Wood in here, didn’t realise this stat....
