Alan Dzagoev justified his position as leader of the Captain Poll for Matchday 2, Day 1 by notching yet again this evening as Russia drew 1-1 with Poland. Jakub Blaszczykowski grabbed the co-hosts’ equaliser while, in the early kick-off, Vaclav Pilar scored for the second successive game as the Czech Republic bounced back from their 4-1 mauling at the hands of Dick Advocaat’s side in Matchday 1.

Despite a yellow card late in the second half, Dzagoev picked up an extra point due to the recovered balls rule, meaning he – like Pilar – sits on seven points, or 14 with the armband. Blaszczykowski picked up 8 points, or 16 with the armband, and their respective captaincy owners must now decide whether it’s worth sticking with what they have or gambling for more. Looking at tomorrow’s encounters, several options look enticing and we’ve rolled out the Captain Poll for you to have a say.

Portugal square up to Denmark in the early kick-off with Paulo Bento’s side desperate for a win in order to stand any chance of progressing. Cristiano Ronaldo will be heavily backed to open his account tomorrow, while Nani’s 3.7% of owners will be looking for a points return against a side that conceded 27 shots in their group opener.

The Danes already have three points in the bag after downing the Dutch in their opener – can Michael Krohn-Deli follow in the footsteps of Dzagoev and Pilar and notch in back-to-back games or will Nicklas Bendtner rise to the occasion for the Group B underdogs?

The later game could well be one of the showdowns of the tournament. Holland face Germany at 7.45pm with Bert Van Marwijk’s side knowing that if the Danes grab a point in the earlier kick-off, they will need to avoid defeat to keep their chances of making the knockout stages alive. Robin Van Persie had eight shots in the game with Denmark, while Wesley Sneijder created 10 goalscoring opportunities for his team mates – both will be looking to produce the goods, while Arjen Robben and Ibrahim Afellay will add plenty attacking threat against their bitter rivals.

Joachim Low’s first XI is packed full of attacking talent with plenty of options from the bench. Of the likely starters, Mario Gomez will be looking to get amongst the goals once again after nodding home the winner against Portugal, while Mesut Ozil’s creativity and the threat of Thomas Muller and Lukas Podolski from out wide is sure to play a part in what is shaping up to be a scintillating encounter.

I asked last night, but I'll ask again:

    Who would YOU captain?:

    Robben - Podolski - Meireles?

Robben for me too, although I think you'll be switching captains for Day 3 anyway.

Surely it is a wise idea when wildcarding to just bring in players who are having the most transfers in (to gain money) then just before Match Day 3 you change to the squad you want?

Actually, only a few players got a rise of 0.1 before the last deadline which was useless for making any profit because you need a player to rise by 0.2m to gain a 0.1m profit.

I have a feeling Afellay might start again, as well as Huntelaar, RVP, Sneijder and Robben. I suppose that means De Jong would have to drop out.

Keepers rarely end up in the negative. He'd have to be sent off of that to happen. Would be incredibly unlucky if he got 0, never mind less than it.

for Daveov captainers its worth considering the losses and gains in perspective.

If you switch captaincy to Ronaldo and he scores 2pts your total will be 11.
If you keep on Daveov but own Ronaldo your score will be 19

    8pt loss

If you switch captaincy to Ronaldo and he scores 2 goals (10 pts) your total will be 27
If you keep on Davov but have Ronaldo our total will be 24.

    3pt gain

Seems to me that you have far more to lose than gain.

sorry...cock up on the first figure

If you keep on Davov (14) and own Ronaldo (2pt) you will be on 16.

Therefore you lose 5pt by switching to Ronaldo captaincy.

Principle remains though....seems to me there are lots of gambles being made over very little gain.

Switching to a midfielder who can score 13pts (two goals, 1cs/rb pt) well then it becomes a little better, but still not earth shattering

        mid (13 x 2= 26) plus DAve's 7pts =33
        mid 13) plus double Dave's 14pts = 27

Thats a six pt gain...not the biggest of gains and that is if your mid gets one of the best scores of the tournament so far.

As I said to Daniel this morning, it's not that simple. It could be effected by what's happening in your ML.

Eg, I've cut lead down from 12 to 5pts after last night. Leader will shift armband from Shirokov to Ozil/Gomez as these are the only players he has playing.

If Cr7 scores 10 I'm still smiling. Especially if ozil/Gomez fails.

      thanks Herr Jonty.

but please try not to confuse people with facts and figures. the people who can't decided whether to stick or twist are weak minded enough......

it really is quite simple: if you think Player X will score more than your current (C) then change it. if not, don't.

That is of course true, but I think people are getting carried away with the gains they will make if they switch to another. If you switch to a player who has one of the best scores of the tournament so far then the gain will still be only 6pts...the way some comments are going its as if switching from Dave will bring them a million pts.

True, believe me there is nothing shitter than scoring 8x2=16 with your (c) on day 1, then going on to change it day after day(While your ML leader stuck it out with the same 8 pt captain) only to end up with 6x2=12pts on the last day and a 12pt deficit in your ML.

Ok, maybe being partnered with Sporting is worse.

      If D has 7, indeed Ronaldo (C) with 2 =11
Here score is 16 (not 19)
      5pt loss

      3pt gain is correct

Basically difference is always = to the point difference between players x 1 (not x 2)

I think when you can have 4 captains, it's worth changing a 7-pointer but it also depends on your position/aim in leagues

its a tough call. I think for most what will happen is exactly what happened with me last week switching from Lew to RVP to Srna last, I ended up with exactly the same score, just a few more grey hairs. 😉

I can see people being 2-3 pts better or worse off in the main.

Did Lew to VP to Pirlo to Ribery (with both of the last 2 getting a 5-er)
This game is killing me though, it seems I had all the good scorer on my very short-list and went for the wrong ones (yeah, OK, that's always happening in fantasy football...)

    Shirokov – Cabaye – Modric – Young

wow. 3 of those midfielders in your first 11 are deep lying playmakers. get mids who play further up the pitch like dzagoev, ribery/nasri , iniesta/fabregas. Young is worth a punt as he plays uptop for england. Akinfeev hasn't been fit and you should have been more aware of that. I'd personally play forwards who have easy games like arshavin, cassano, benzema. Goodluck !

I chose Akinfeev before the tournament started and he was a 50/50 for the first match. I hoped he would play but he didnt. I was going to sell him but I sold Valbuena instead as he wasn't going to play for France either. I was hoping Akinfeev would be fit for the second match but he wasnt. So I guess it may take him a while to recover so I will get rid of him but don't know which goalkeeper to buy.

Thanks for the advice. I am thinking about using my wildcard and getting a different goalkeeper, getting rid of some expensive defenders and using this money to get expensive strikers such as Benzema, and then maybe a different midfielder.

Do you think it is a good/bad idea to use my wildcard at this time?
