Michael Coone crowned 2020/21 FPL champion

A dramatic end to the 2020/21 Fantasy Premier League season culminated with Michael Coone being crowned the overall winner.

Michael’s team, Teddy Bears Utd, began the afternoon in third place but the final-day captaincy of Sadio Mane helped the new champion overhaul Mohamad Abdallah (7amodi) and Ola Hovde (Rett i lomma).

Double-digit hauls from Ederson and Vladimir Coufal also contributed to the ascent to first place.

Above: Michael Coone’s Gameweek 38 squad

Ola, who topped the table in 23 Gameweeks across two different spells, plummeted from 1st to 10th following a Gameweek score of 49 (after hits).

That is Ola’s lowest rank since Gameweek 7.

Mohamad began and finished the day in second, ending up five points adrift of first place.

Viktor Johansson (iC0p) took bronze, with a Gameweek 38 score of 94 points elevating the Swede from 14th to 3rd.

FANTASY FOOTBALL SCOUT LEAGUE

Our Fantasy Football Scout league was an even tighter affair.

Pandin Bruyne (Championez FC) and Ray Freeman (Norfolk Enchancers) ended up tied on 2,632 points, with the former sealing the title having made fewer transfers.

Robert Tuck (VARsity Blues) and Thomas Lumley (Boogie Pete) also finished level on points in the race for third, with Robert edging it again thanks to less activity in the transfer market.

Tenth-place Craig S (Only put Matip in) deserves a shout-out, too, having handed the armband to the Gameweek’s highest scorer – Pablo Fornals – and passing the 100-point mark.

FANTASY FOOTBALL SCOUT MEMBERS LEAGUE

Robert Tuck (VARsity Blues) added the Fantasy Football Scout Members league trophy to his third-place finish in the open league.

Robert finished 10 points clear of Nathan Jobling (LEJ Utd), while Matt Carvel (Cancelo Culture) jumped up to third on the final weekend.

All of our top 10 captained Mohamed Salah in Gameweek 38.

The league tables above are taken from LiveFPL.net. Thanks to Ragabolly for his excellent work on this site throughout the season.

21k finish for me, which is my second best season.

Greenwood and Bruno > Mane & Raphinha (-4) worked out an absolute treat as my auto subs would have resulted in -1!

Thanks for your help this year people and look forward to catching up next season.

I've been playing FPL since 2007. I've never really thought about OR until this season. Always just been focussed on winning MLs.

Every place on the internet has its negatives but I've found this place a great community for me. I've learned a few things along the way. Main one is not to be stubborn over players (e.g. DCL and Justin early on). I've also taken far fewer hits this season and learned to be a bit more patient.

Ended up with the highest rank ever in 14 years of playing (23k). I also won an ML I've been in since the beginning. Never won it before.

Cheers for all the advice and general football chat. Looking forward to next year already 🙂

7 clubs have had a 33.33% or higher CS rate in the PL in more than one season across the last 5 years:

    Man City (4), Chelsea (4), Man Utd (4), Liverpool (3), Spurs (3), Arsenal (2), Everton (2).

Those are trusted clubs. However, there have been some clubs who have hit 33.33% CS or more in the PL in one of the last 5 seasons:

    Southampton (16/17), Burnley (19/20), Leicester (19/20), Wolves (19/20), Sheff Utd (19/20), Aston Villa (20/21).

Having made a few posts about my retirement from FPL after finishing in position 2.3k this season - and mentioning my season history of 8 top 5k finishes in 13 seasons, including 3 inside the top 1k, and the other 5 being at 10k, 15k, 24k, 26k and 39k - a few of you asked for my top tips! So, without having given it huge thought, these are the top 5 that stand out to me and have served me well down the years. Rarely have I broken these rules. Some of these are teaching granny to suck eggs, and will seem like common sense, but it’s the playbook I followed and I think you could do far worse than keep them in mind.

    1. The ‘3 cheap defender’ strategy, where you have 2 staple picks from good defences, then rotate 3 cheap (i.e. usually not more than 4.5m in value) for the final defensive slot in a 3-4-3 or 3-5-2, is the clear way to go. The new FPL Retro site (massively recommended by the way) showed I employed those two formations 15 times each this season - to be honest I thought it would have been higher! Far more upside with midfielders and strikers and the extra money saved that you can then spend on the front 8 goes a long way. The last few seasons, with the emergence of Trent/Robbo and the general shift from full backs to wing backs and the expectation for them to contribute goals/assists, has challenged this model however I still maintain it’s the way to go.

    2. Don’t waste money on GKs. Spend it elsewhere. Buy two at 4.5, or max 5.0/4.5, and spend the money on outfield players. Low upside on keepers, so over the course of a season it’s usually a waste to buy the likes of Ederson or Allison.

    3. Take hits as the option of last resort. My worst season season ever - when I finished 39k - was when I played loose and risky, taking hit after hit. It’s a strategy that rarely pays off and can only ever be justified when you have multiple injuries or are taking a speculative hit based on a good run of forthcoming fixtures. Hits rarely pay off in the isolation over a single GW.

    4. NEVER make a transfer based on a narrow one-in, one out judgement. There are ALWAYS opportunity costs from transfers and these need to be factored in. For example, transfer X frees up Y million, which could then be used to upgrade a cheap striker to a mid-priced value option, or a Lacazette/Werner to a premium like Kane. Transfers should rarely, if ever, be viewed in silo.

    5. Always let the head rule the heart, and apply common sense. Except perhaps for Aguero today, when the ‘follow your heart’ managers were rewarded big style! But usually it’s much more sensible to look at the stats and watch games, and take a step back and consider players objectively. Take Willock for example. I brought him in a few weeks ago, as it’s clear the boy has a knack for arriving into the box at the right time and the stats backed that up. Many managers were saying ‘he can’t keep this up’ and ‘he’s over performing against his zag’ which for me is the classic heart ruling the head and interpreting the stats to fit a narrative.

And I’ll reserve my final comment to common sense. I always ask myself before making a transfer “can I really see a player like [insert any player that comes to mind] Stuart Armstrong - sorry Stuart, but using you as an example of a player I have seen spoken about at times that I just would never consider even as a fellow Scot - in my squad, or will it be more hassle than it’s worth?”. It’s usually more bother than it’s worth and is a transfer out in the making. Another one is Jorginho with the argument that he’s on pens. Just don’t. So always take a step back and look at whether you see that player working within the structure of your squad. It’s usually quite telling when you look at it from this macro perspective.

So there you have it folks - nothing particularly earth-shattering but it’s helped me to an FPL record I’m proud of. I’m sure many of you will disagree with this and pick holes in it, which is of course totally fine as there’s more than one way to skin a cat. Best of luck to all for next season and every season after that!

Totally agree with some of these common sense rules - they are the mandate. The game progresses and we need to progress with it, or we may fall behind.

Stick with the game, you obviously enjoy it and have a lot of value to add.

See you next season unless you're too busy doing something else.

Good one, thanks! They should have you do a guest article or 2 for next preseason even if you write them now since you are retiring, some good advice on how to start off GW1 in a position closer to top 10k than 5 millionth would help for initial squad selection, and another like above about managing during the season. Cheers!

You genuinely would not want my advice at the start of the season - I’m a notoriously slow starter and always playing catch up after the first 4-6 weeks. Perhaps a post on how to recover from a poor start would make more sense!
