Pre-Season

The best budget FPL forwards for 2021/22

Let’s have a serious talk about the best FPL budget forwards that you can use for the 2021/22 season.

As was the case last season, the initial price list for forwards in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) makes it hard to see where you might spend your money if you are trying to use as little of your £100m budget as possible on a third striker who might only rarely be called upon.

Several of last year’s alumni are here once again, some have dropped in price after disappointing seasons and others are arriving in the Premier League with their promoted colleagues.

None are guaranteed a starting spot at their club, but a few have the chance to make one their own if they can convince a new manager in pre-season, recover effectively from a long-term injury or prove that they can make the step up from the division below.

We’ve got every position covered, so take your pick!

Here’s our look at those most likely to make the breakthrough to the FPL mainstream.

You can get loads more data on all the players in question (plus much more) in our soon-to-be-revamped Premium Members Area – and there’s a completely free trial available right now.

BEST FPL BUDGET FORWARDS – BURNLEY NOTICE

Sub-£6.0m forwards sorted by minutes played in 2020/21

Above: Sub-£6.0m forwards sorted by minutes played in 2020/21

It’s clear from the goal threat table above (from the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members’ Area) that, if it’s the possibility of regular playing time you’re looking for in a bargain striker, Burnley is the place to look. Three potential partners for main man Chris Wood (£7.0m) all got significant starts and minutes last season, though none contributed more than three goals. By the end of last season they were available at a spread of price points, but this time around FPL has tagged them all at £5.5m. So which one is the best option?

Jay Rodriguez (£5.5m) managed about one game less overall than either of his two Turf Moor striking rivals, but he only got on the scoresheet once which puts him on the back foot straight away. The Members Area KPI Attacking table puts some more distance between the former England man and the other two:

Rodriguez lags behind in minutes per touch and per goal attempt in the box and rarely creates chances. Add in reduced goals and starts and, unless a clear preference is shown for him in pre-season, the choice for FPL managers boils down to Austria’s Ashley Barnes (£5.5m) versus the Czech Republic’s Matej Vydra (£5.5m).

Using the Premium Members Area comparison tool highlights the different aspects they bring to Burnley’s attack.

budget forwards touch heatmap

The touch heatmaps suggest that Barnes is more immersed in build-up play while Vydra tends more towards involvement at the sharp end. Statistically, Vydra wins out in all xG categories except set-pieces, touches in the final third and penalty area and particularly on take-ons (26 v 2).

When it comes to actual goal attempts, however, the results are much more mixed:

Vydra gets twice as many big chances, but Barnes has the greater volume and accuracy, resulting in almost identical numbers for goal conversion as well as goals actually scored (three apiece). This pattern repeats with assists:

Once again Barnes has the volume (20 chances created), but Vydra wins on quality (four big chances created) and, this time, even on the end result (two assists to none). Vydra is also the clear choice for bonus points with a BPS baseline of 101 to Barnes’s 36.

If pre-season doesn’t reveal a clear and obvious partner for Wood, and you simply can’t find the extra £1.5m for the New Zealander, then Vydra looks as good an option as you can find as a budget FPL striker likely to get game time and also to do something productive with it.

HURRY UP AND WAIT

Chelsea assets step up ahead of favourable run of fixtures 5

Dwight Gayle (£5.5m) scored against West Bromwich Albion in his first game back in December after a long-term absence with a damaged medial collateral ligament, but that goal was to be his only strike of the season despite 500 more minutes in mostly substitute appearances across the frontline.

It was known that Gayle’s contract had run down at Newcastle United, but mystery surrounded his future as the season ended until a report emerged in the local press confirming that he had indeed signed on for the Magpies once again. It looks as though Steve Bruce would like to keep the 31 year-old around as backup for first teamers like Callum Wilson (£7.5m) and Allan Saint-Maximin (£6.5m) but regular football or significant attacking returns for him this season look very unlikely.

Wesley Moraes (£5.5m) seemed primed to break out in the Premier League after a summer transfer when he notched his sixth goal for new club Aston Villa on New Year’s Day 2020. Sadly, later in the same match he suffered a cruciate injury that took much longer than expected to heal and it was only in late April this year that he once again stepped onto the pitch for the first team as a late substitute.

In his prolonged absence, Ollie Watkins (£7.5m) has not only arrived from Brentford and cemented himself in Villa’s first-team but has even gone on to England recognition. The club will certainly need backup for the long season ahead, but it will be a while before anyone knows whether Wesley can recapture the form that saw Villa pay Club Brugge £22m for him two years ago. Will he become one of the best FPL budget forwards? We’ll see.

Jean-Philippe Mateta (£5.5m) arrived at Crystal Palace last winter on an 18-month loan from Mainz in the Bundesliga, but the towering striker faces a battle to establish himself as a first-teamer.

Roy Hodgson clearly rated him highly as he had pursued his signature for many months, but the retired Palace manager still couldn’t find a place for the 23-year old who had scored seven goals in Germany before Christmas as Christian Benteke (£6.5m) showed form and reliability. Hodgson preferred to pair the Belgian with a more mercurial attacking partner like Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) and Mateta could only muster one goal at Brighton in a rare start. It remains to be seen whether the new boss at Palace believes it’s time to use Mateta more prominently.

HELLO, MUST I BE GOING?

Michy Batshuayi is aFPL budget forward

Michy Batshuayi (£5.5m) was also on-loan at Crystal Palace last season, but similarly found himself typically staring at the Selhurst Park pitch from the bench and only managed one more goal than Mateta. Batshuayi is currently at the EURO 2020 finals with Belgium, but struggles to get game time with them, too, despite an enviable record of 22 goals in 34 international appearances.

It’s that sort of quality that persuaded Chelsea to pay Marseille more than £30m for his services during EURO 2016. Batshuayi scored the goal that brought the league title to Stamford Bridge a year later, but that was only one of five across a mere 236 minutes of league playing time and soon he was off out on loans to Valencia, to Palace, but first and most successfully to Borussia Dortmund where he scored nine goals in 14 games before injury ended his season.

Batshuayi’s manager at Dortmund was current Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel. With Batshuayi now back at Stamford Bridge under a manager who knows him, could this be his opportunity to lay claim to the slippery prize of becoming Chelsea’s primary front man? Or will he be looking for yet another top-flight club to be his new home for the season?

As Liverpool made their runs to Champions League and Premier League glory, Divock Origi (£5.0m) was the obvious alternative up front whenever the situation required a rest for one of their main attacking trio, and particularly Roberto Firmino (£9.0m), but 2020/21 saw the arrival of Diogo Jota (£7.5m) from Wolves which relegated the Belgian forward to a goalless 182 minutes from nine cameo appearances. His prospects for game time at Anfield now appear more distant than ever and there are reports that the club are looking to move him on. Certainly not our first choice for FPLs budget forwards.

Eighteen months ago Arsenal were so keen that their young striker Eddie Nketiah (£5.5m) should see plenty of first-team action that they recalled him from a loan at Leeds United six months early. Since then, despite numerous chances to make an impact at the Emirates he has not done so and Arsenal fans are decidedly lukewarm about the idea of keeping him around. It was recently confirmed that a new contract offer is on the table for him, but he is only likely to offer some FPL value if he moves to apparent suitors Watford, West Ham United or Crystal Palace.

Aaron Connolly (£5.5m) at Brighton and Hove Albion is another player who is still very young for the top level, but whose career has stalled somewhat after early signs of promise. He scored twice in 17 appearances for the Seagulls in 2020/21, but Brighton have already shown interest in Stuttgart’s Nico Gonzalez at the £25m price point which suggests Graham Potter is looking to invest up front rather than promote Connolly who has also been dealing with some off-field issues. A spell on loan for him seems the most likely outcome for the season ahead.

Tanzanian forward Mbwana Samatta (£5.5m) spent last season on loan at Fenerbahce having failed to establish himself at Villa Park after an £8.5m move from Genk. He only scored five times for the Turkish club and, despite being under contract until 2025, his future doesn’t seem to lie in Birmingham.

THE £4.5m QUARTET

Third best FPL budget forward options

If all you’re looking for from your third FPL budget strikers is the barest minimum outlay possible then the game at its release offers you four options.

Southampton’s Daniel N’Lundulu (£4.5m) and Michael Obafemi (£4.5m) are both interesting young talents, but with Danny Ings (£8.0m) and Che Adams (£7.0m) the clear starters and Nathan Tella (£5.0m), classified by FPL as a midfielder, seemingly jumping the queue as a third attacking option (and £0.5m more expensive accordingly), it would seem to take a major injury, or more likely two, for either of them to see significant game time. N’Lundulu did manage 13 appearances last season, but that only amounted to a total of 102 minutes on the pitch.

Watford’s Croatian centre-forward Stipe Perica (£4.5m), formerly of Udinese, did take the field 25 times in their promotion season, but on 60% of those occasions it was from the bench and he ended the season with as many red cards as goals or assists (one of each).

Aston Villa’s Keinan Davis (£4.5m) has already been utilised as a bargain third striking option by many FPL managers in recent times and is offered once again at the lowest possible price, but with the success of Ollie Watkins, the return of Wesley and a general disenchantment amongst Villa supporters with his performances a season-long loan looks on the cards with some reports suggesting West Bromwich Albion back in the Championship as the most likely destination.

NEWLY PROMOTED BUDGET STRIKER OPTIONS

Newly promoted FPL budget strikers

Coming the other way with a much larger fanfare than usual for a team promoted via the playoffs, are Brentford. Ivan Toney (£6.5m) is clearly the man creating most of the buzz in FPL circles, but 22-year old Marcus Forss (£5.5m) nabbed 10 goals himself in the campaign from 16 starts and 34 substitute appearances in all competitions.

Brentford’s attacking philosophy, like Leeds United before them, is simply part of who they are and seems very unlikely to change just because they’ve stepped up a level. Forss, now appearing and scoring at international level for Finland, could provide as many cheap goals as you’ll find anywhere else in this price range.

With Norwich City, it’s hard to see past the talismanic Teemu Pukki at £6.0m who, taken overall, had a decent season for a promoted striker two seasons ago (it was just a bit of a roller-coaster). If he were to be unavailable for any length of time, Jordan Hugill (£5.5m), signed for around £3m from West Ham last summer, is his most likely deputy.

Young Republic of Ireland international Adam Idah (£5.0m) played 12 times for the Canaries in their previous Premier League adventure, but did not find the scoresheet. He did bag three goals in the Championship-winning campaign, but 16 of his 17 games came as a substitute.

With Watford captain Troy Deeney (£5.5m) back in the Premier League, you could perhaps be the most certain of any asset here of what your bargain outlay might bring you. Over the last few seasons it’s typically been nine or ten goals, three or four assists and just over 100 FPL points, but this time Deeney needs to show he has recovered fully from the effects of the achilles tendon injury that kept him out of all but the final game of Watford’s run-in. At this price Deeney represents a pretty good deal if medical issues don’t finally get the better of a veteran who is always in the thick of the action.

However, for those seeking after the diamond in the rough of this season’s crop of bargain FPL forward options, take a long look at the talent and opportunities at the feet of João Pedro (£5.5m). So far, he has followed the same path from Fluminense in Brazil to Vicarage Road as Richarlison (£7.5m), with whom he has been in regular contact.

The teenager scored nine times, second only to winger Ismaila Sarr (£6.0m), including highlight-reel strikes like this one, and added three assists in 38 league appearances as the Hertfordshire club finished runners-up in the Championship to Norwich. He has just extended his contract at Watford to last for another six years and it’s not unthinkable that his debut season in the Premiership might match Richarlison’s five goals and eight assists for the Hornets in 2017/18.

Depends on what you’ve got left in the quarters I’d say.

I’m going to pick 12-15 from the same four teams if I can. If they all get through, no need to WC.

Save it for the semi or final.

Best players for last day aside Forsberg? Really struggling to find some. I am thinking maybe even go with Stones as C4 coverage.

Dont need to have too many players on last day, one will suffice. Those games are tricky to predict anyway.

If you have a WC, then someone from England makes sense, maybe a Swedish defender as well.

    Happier with this I think

    Ronaldo | Griezmann(3) | Depay(2)
    Wijnaldum | Insigne(1) | Berardi | Forsberg(4) | Grealish
Spinazzola | Di Lorenzo | Dumfries | Maehle | Danielson
    Stekelenburg | Ward

Griezmann is an interesting pick, could be a good differential but I think Benzema is better value. Ballsy on Grealish! Largely template aside from that

I’m on this at the moment, banking on Italy, Netherlands, France, Denmark, Belgium, Sweden progressing:

    Donnarumma (Stekelenburg)
Spinazzola Di Lorenzo Maehle Dumfries (Pavard)
De Bruyne Wijnaldum Berardi Hojbjerg (Forsberg)
    Lukaku Depay (Benzema)

Tear it to shreds! Definitely worried about no Ronaldo or Eng/Ger but the balance of this team is awesome and I really back all of these players to progress.

Can you stretch Højbjerg to Damsgaard? Højbjerg doesn't normally do assists, so that's point chasing.

I think I could, but do you think that’s necessary? On pens in Eriksen’s absence, and in all three games he looks like he plays in a more attacking role in Eriksen’s absence too. I was kinda impressed by the look of him apart from the points. What do you think?

Damsgaard is on set pieces (non pen) now. And I doubt Højbjerg will be taking the next one, considering how badly he took the last. Damsgaard much more attacking. He is our new playmaker.

No Ronaldo, swap for Lukaku imo. You need Ronaldo, what is it about 5 goals so far do you not like?

60% of his goals are penalties, so I guess some question of whether it's sustainable. Would be interested to see his non-penalty xG so far

Lots of penalty goals, I think he’ll be high owned too so I’m considering it a differential to go without him. I just don’t think he’ll get that rate of goals against good teams without pens given how conservative Portugal’s team is. If I’d bring in him it’s definitely for Lukaku though, still considering it!

Highly owned for a reason bro! I'm going with him because I'm winning my ML (not too bothered about overall rank - I just want to beat my mates!) so going without him is terrifying. There's been lots of penalties so far this tournament and I expect that to continue. For me he's a must have, it's Ronaldo.

Yeah I’m chasing by 5 pts or so, expecting the top rankers to have Ronaldo so banking on differentials. Could really screw me over though! It’s scaring me but I kinda want to hedge my bet that he’ll be largely anonymous.

I'm really similar to this. I wasted the wildcard GW3 (cost me 30+ points from my original team) so need to focus on getting a team through, so I'm struggling to include Portugal, England, Germany, too.

Where you have Di Lorenzo, KDB, Hojbjerg, and Lukaku, I have Kimpembe, Sterling, Damsgaard, and Immobile, otherwise exactly the same.

I worry about lack of Lukaku or Ronaldo, but I can see either progressing and I'm scared of losing too many players!

Agreed on Lukaku-Ronaldo, I’m slightly leaning Belgium but that one could burn me. Upgrading Hojbjerg to Damsgaard as per Brehmeren’s advice. Not going near the England/Germany conundrum until we have a winner, I’d expect the winner to do well. Do you think Italy maintains its attacking chops in the knockout stages, or reverts back to Italy of old?

I'm an Italy fan and going to the game on Saturday so maybe for emotional reasons I've got 4 of them. But the style won't change, I don't think. Mancini has been building this for years, and I'm surprised it was a bit under the radar before the Euros.

I guess you could ask if they would be good enough to score goals in an eventual semi with France, but for me Austria then likely a slow, ageing Belgium defence look nice fixtures for the pace of the forward line.

I think so - well I can say that I have Immobile plus double French defence (can't afford Varane but have Kimpembe and Pavard). If I could find the extra money I'd rather Varane for certainty of starts and lack of suspension threat.

Fair fair. I have to watch the Austria games again and see if they have any weak points defensively. They were shambolic against Macedonia during some parts, but they held their own against Ukraine fairly well.

I really expect Berardi over Chiesa - they are so different and Berardi works well with Immobile and Insigne.

I think probably Verratti over Locatelli but this is close - you never know about Verratti’s fitness, and Mancini could maybe try to save him for Belgium.

      Spinazzola / Meunier / Maehle / Dumfries / Porres

If Portugal go ahead, chances are Ronaldo is involved.

If Portugal are behind, every chance Ronaldo will drag them back into it even if they're not having the best game.

If theres one player in the world you'd want in your team when you're losing it would be him imo.

I don’t think I’ve seen this asked before, but how do people feel about the “keepers at the bottom, forwards at the bottom” aspect of this compared to FPL?

Personally, I like it more. I’d like to be able to flip around my team - and change the FPL grass from circles.

The circle grass cutting as displayed on FPL is illegal in the PL anyway and has been for years (linesmen complained it hampered them on offside calls)

Towards the end of last season it was becoming clear

Chelsea and Man City (in the absence of an injury crisis ) are generally fools gold

      Way too much rotation

Kane at either club would be the only one I’d go for

I found the Chelsea Man City rotation too frustrating to the point of not enjoying it.
Firstly you are hoping your chosen player is actually playing, secondly you then hope they get some points.
Sometimes in addition around the 80th minute of the game, you realise your player was subbed off after 59 minutes.
Players like Chilwell, Mahrez, Havertz are sadly a no go for me for this reason.

BB in the big double late season.

TC when a premium has two easy fixtures in a double and should play both.

FH in a blank if and when I need to

WC1 around GW4/5 or 8/9 depending on how dire the situation is

WC2 try and hold for around March time and the late season doubles/blanks - or spaff it GW20

1st WC: GW7 (I think) looks good for a fixture shift
2nd half of season: BB in a DGW the week after WCing.

Some horrendous BBing occurred last year with Leeds players when they only had one marginal fixture in a DGW.

On the other hand, here’s what I’m looking at for FPL:

    Sánchez (Foster)
    TAA Robertson Digne Shaw (Lamptey)
    Salah Fernandes Pépé Raphinha Buendia
    Iheanacho (4.5 4.5)

Obviously Iheanacho->Watkins is a move, not sure if I want double AVL attack though. Pépé more of a one week punt, could see him smashing Brentford and getting some price rises, then evaluate if Arsenal keep their end of season form against top opposition in GWs 2/3. Liverpool defensive double up is gonna be amazing imo, I think people are sleeping on them. Rest is fairly template.

    1. Dr. Rog
      • 14 Years

I would say outright no, but given the cheap strikers have all gone up in price and the defenders down, you might be onto something. Wouldnt feel comfortable with that bench though, as soon as some injuries/rotations hit you wont be able to field an 11.

      1. ★Kuntheman★
        • 8 Years
        2 years, 9 months ago

Yeah most of my selections are based on whether or not someone is valued better than I expected. I expected Sanchez 5.0, Digne 6.0, Shaw 6.0, Lamptey 5.0, Fernandes 12.5, Pépé 8.0, Raphinha 7.5, Buendia 7.0, Iheanacho 8.0. So all of them look like better deals than my personal valuations. Watkins I expected 8.0 so a little surprised there, still considering him.

In the case of TAA and Robertson, had Liverpool sustained their level from the previous season I think they’d have been 8.0 7.5 respectively this season, so I consider them undervalued with regard to how I think they’ll perform this year with Hendo and VVD back, and Konate signed.

Bench is definitely a problem, relying heavily on Lamptey. As for the cheap strikers, I just don’t think Watkins and DCL are really that great, they feel kinda streaky to me and inconsistent. I consider Jimenez, Bamford, and Nacho to be more aligned to what I want at that price point, as they’re consistent against all teams.

Watkins essential imo, personally think the balance is wrong as prefer 343 especially with the forward available at under 8m this season. Likewise plenty good defenders under 5 makes double pool hard to justify imo

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years
        2 years, 9 months ago

Currently experimenting with Grealish instead of Watkins and Nacho, Antonio, Wilson forwards… means not too leveraged towards Villa flying out of the blocks

Dangerous to oppose Olly though, he was mr. consistency last year for long periods, (though rarely/never mr. Explosive bar liverpool)

        1. ★Kuntheman★
          • 8 Years

Wilson is an interesting one. Antonio is mildly overpriced imo. If Grealish stays at Villa, I think he’s a solid pick, are you sure he’s worth the 1.5 over Buendia? He’s definitely better but 1.5 is a massive difference.

          1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
            • 14 Years
            2 years, 9 months ago

Do you reckon Antonio is overpriced?

I hated getting Chris Wood instead of him for DGW19 last year, watching Antonio he’s generally lethal more often than not, and pretty much fixture proof - it’s just his fitness, and hopefully the summer helps that.

Same with Callum - a rested and fit Wilson just scores against anyone, hopefully he gets a month or two injury free under his belt & grans a few goals & a pen or two, decent-ish fixtures too

With Buendia… I just don’t know, I watched a reel of all his goals & assists last year (not definitive I know) and honestly I saw more bad defending and bad goalkeeping than anything else - not to say the non-FPL aspects of his game aren’t class - but just wonder whether his premier league returns from the prior season won’t be a better indication of this season for him…

Especially without Pukki - they seemed to have the Yorke/Cole thing going for them last year - Emi did take a pen for Norwich though, if he got Villa pens then yeah he instantly goes up a notch

Grealish i think will play his way out of Villa once & for all this season if he stays fit, and could be at Madrid or Barca next season let alone city or Utd - needs to settle the shin injury down though

            1. ★Kuntheman★
              • 8 Years
              2 years, 9 months ago

I like your logic with Antonio and Wilson being fixture proof, I’d agree with you on that. I expected Wilson 7.5 and Antonio 7.0. I’d be interested as to how WHM performs without Lingard in the event that he doesn’t return. Also not sure if I back Newcastle to be attacking like they were at the end of last season trying to stave off relegation.

With Buendia, I think you have a decent read on it. I was impressed with some of his tape and some of it not so much, the opposition is dreadful. That being said, one goal and nine assists for an awful Norwich side in the PL two season ago. AVL is a huge leap up from that, I fancy him to do decent. Compared to Grealish’s price I lean Buendia, I expected him to be 7.0 or 7.5 and at 6.5 he’s just too tempting.

What’s your plan if Grealish moves to MCI? Would you stick with him?

              1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
                • 14 Years
                2 years, 9 months ago

Yeah if Grealish goes I think he’s all but dead as an FPL a asset - too much uncertainty if he’s in a rotation pool at City or Chelsea

And he easily could end up going this summer, which coincidentally could be the main driver for the Buendia signing - they may see Buendia as the long term (or short term even) successor to Grealish

If Grealish went I’d think about a punt on Buendia

Penalties for Villa is a very interesting sub plot - Watkins, Grealish or Buendia would all be elevated in the event of trying their hand at a penalty again

      2. ★Kuntheman★
        • 8 Years

I go back and forth between Watkins and Iheanacho, double AVL offense seems a bit much but if Grealish stays it could be a good move. See my thoughts on the Liverpool and forwards under 8m above^ would love to know what you think about my logic...or lack thereof 😆

Thing is, Shaw, Creswell, Digne are all kind of “TAA-lites” with their wider roles & set pieces…unless Creswell plays left of 3 but even then he still takes frees and corners in a very set piece heavy Moyes team

There’s just so many options in the cheap/mid price defenders and midprice strikers, great to see though, have to say

Newcastle, Palace, and Southampton in the first four for West Ham too... Cresswell will probably be the "casual" pick few of the FFS/Twitter crowd go for who ends up doing pretty well.

Digne was off set pieces towards the end because of Rodriguez IIRC, but not sure. Castagne/Pereira may be playing wingback in a 3-5-2 - love the sound of that.

Leicester have also signed Ryan Bertrand apparently - so they now have Justin, Castagne, Periera, Bertrand, Thomas to muddy the waters at full back…

Digne losing set pieces was a pain - Siggy monopolises most of them when he plays, and JRod steals a few as well

TAA, Shaw, Digne is my backline ATM.

Fixtures make TAA too appealing for me. VVD's return and the signing of Konate should shore up Liverpool's defense. See 4 very cleanable fixtures in the first 6 for Liverpool and then there's his monsterous attacking threat.
